One Hot Year after Another
Globally, 2020 was the hottest year on record, effectively tying 2016, the previous record. Overall, Earth’s average temperature has risen more than 2 degrees Fahrenheit since the 1880s.
Tumblr media
Temperatures are increasing due to human activities, specifically emissions of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and methane.
Heat and the energy it carries are what drive our planet: winds, weather, droughts, floods, and more are expressions of heat. The right amount of heat is even one of the things that makes life on Earth possible. But too much heat is changing the way our planet’s systems act.
My World’s on Fire
Higher temperatures drive longer, more intense fire seasons. As rain and snowfall patterns change, some regions are getting drier and more vulnerable to damage, setting the stage for more fires.
Tumblr media
2020 saw several record-breaking fires, both in Australia in the beginning of the year, and in the western U.S. through northern summer and fall. Smoke from fires in both regions reached so high into the atmosphere that it formed clouds and continues to travel around the globe today.
Tumblr media
In the Siberian Arctic, unusually high temperatures helped drive at least 19 fires in the region. More than half of them were burning peat soil – decomposed organic materials – that stores a lot of carbon. Peat fires release vast amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, potentially leading to even more warming.
Tumblr media
The Water’s Getting Warm
It wasn’t just fire seasons setting records. 2020 had more named tropical storms in the Atlantic and more storms making landfall in the U.S. than any hurricane season on record.
Tumblr media
Hurricanes rely on warm ocean water as fuel, and this year, the Atlantic provided. 30 named storms weren’t the only things that made this year’s hurricane season notable.
Tumblr media
Storms like Eta, Delta, and Iota quickly changed from smaller, weaker tropical storms into more destructive hurricanes. This rapid intensification is complicated, but it’s likely that warmer, more humid weather – a result of climate change – helps drive it.
Tumblr media
The Ice Is Getting Thin
Add enough heat, and even the biggest chunk of ice will melt. That’s true whether we’re talking about the ice cubes in your glass or the vast sheets of ice at our planet’s poles. Right now, the Arctic region is warming about three times faster than the rest of our planet, which has some major effects both locally and globally.
Tumblr media
This year, Arctic sea ice hit a near-record low. Sea ice is actually made of frozen ocean water, and it grows and thaws with the seasons, typically reaching an annual minimum extent in September.
Tumblr media
Warmer ocean water led to more ice melting this year, and 2020’s annual minimum extent continued a long trend of shrinking Arctic sea ice extent.
A Long Trend
We study Earth and how it’s changing from the ground, the sky, and space. Using data from sensors all around the planet, we calculate the global average temperature, working with our partners at NOAA.
Many other organizations also track global temperature using their own instruments and methods, and they all match remarkably well. The last seven years were the hottest seven years on record. Earth is getting warmer.
Tumblr media
We also study the effects of increasing temperatures, like the melting sea ice and longer fire seasons mentioned above. Additionally, we can study the cause of climate change from space, with a bird’s eye view of increasing carbon in the atmosphere.
Tumblr media
The planet is changing because of human activities. We’re working together with other agencies to monitor changes and understand what this means for people in the future.

Your mischaracterization for Akaashi was very fun to read. If it's not bothersome could you write one for Oikawa?
a/n: here it is! sorry it took a few days! :)
[MISCHARACTERIZATIONS OF OIKAWA TOORU]
oikawa tooru.
manipulative: I get this comes from the thought that he’s able to get what he wants using his charm and good-luck, but it’s not really true. he’s people-smart, not manipulative. he can talk with someone and analyze what ‘type’ of person you are, and then he knows how he can use you -- in games. In real day-to-day life he can’t do this. his people smarts stop outside the volleyball court, mostly because he doesn’t want to waste his energy on people he doesn’t think are necessary or important to him. his close friends he knows very well, but others? not only does he know jack shit, he doesn’t care to know anything other than their name. he’s either completely in or completely out.
selfish: a lot of people paint him to be this person who is so enamored with volleyball, or some other thing, that he’s willing to take it from others in order to get what he wants. to put it simply, he’s not. it comes down to connotation -- it’s not selfish, he’s self-centered. i stated the difference in my akaashi post, but it’s significant. basically, what’s his is his, but he’s not willing to take it from someone else. he revels in the hard work he does, he likes the feeling of giving his all in order to get something, it’s like a drug, success. He’s someone that can get hooked on success if no one’s there to bring his big ego back to ground level.
good communicator: this misconception usually comes up when talking about him as a boyfriend, that he’ll be honest and upfront with you because he loves you. have you see how emotionally constipated this guy is? did you see how long it took for him to address his complicated feelings for his enemies in volleyball? that’s not going to translate into a good communicator, he often leaves things unsaid, or just doesn’t feel like talking about issues. he often finds it easier to just let his partner in the relationship adjust to his communication habits and general life habits rather than take time to fix it with them. also, he actively ignores messages from people he’s fighting with or doesn’t care about! he’ll have 8 unread messages from the girl in chemistry class you confessed to him earlier that day whilst simultaneously sending 100 messages in the seijoh VB groupchat,,,,
noncommittal: I guess this comes from his flirty nature, but I don’t think he’d be noncommittal in the sense that he gets easily drawn into the lust and adrenaline of affairs. maybe he’s noncommittal in the sense that he’s scared to give his all to someone, his messy, ugly all -- but he wouldn’t cheat. when he meets that one person, the one lover that changes everything for him, he gets just as addicted to them as he is to volleyball. he’s the type to indulge in the things he loves, even to a dangerous extent. once he’s in, he’s in deep, and for good. it takes a few months of cautious steps before he dives in, head first.
emotionally-intelligent: Is this from him being a Cancer? that he can read other’s emotions extremely well? i can understand the intent: someone as complicated as him should be able to tell other’s emotions. but, no. aside from the fact that he just doesn’t pay attention to other’s (that aren’t his teammates), he’s just as emotionally fucked as everyone else. for him it just manifests in a almost-detrimental, logical, hardworking way. I can’t imagine him looking at someone and being able to read their entire life story and have them feel comfortable around him in a day, that’s really only a talent he has with his teammates. outside the court, things are too different, and he’s too focused somewhere else. he’s definitely hurt many peoples’ feelings from being too blunt and caring too little -- sometimes he’s even brushed off his friends.
overall, oikawa is as 3D as a 2D character can be. his biggest flaw is his self-centeredness and his emotional constipation, but once you get past his shell, once you sink in deeper and deeper into his heart you’ll fall in love with him and all his wonderful complexities. once you give everything to him, fall blindly into him, he will do the exact same for you, too.

I asked my good friend @olishitmar who hasn’t watched Jojo to fill this tierlist with the help of my awful character descriptions and here is the result.
Let’s just be happy they put Speedwagon in A
(Risotto is in “nerd tier” because they accidentally misspelled Risotto Nero as Risotto Nerd and Diavolo is just... there)

Thank you @olishitmar for participating in this C:
