I don't write for other people. I don't write for myself. I write so two characters can finally call each other by their first names, breathless, after 70k words of denial... preferably under a full moon, covered in blood and inches away from death

Analysis of the names in “The Secret History”
Richard Papen’s real forename is John, which means “ God is Gracious” and is derivative from Greek. Now, the name he goes by is Richard, which means “powerful.” He puts on the persona of being capable of the murder, the stoic who loves Homer, the rich boy - yet he is not at all. By rejecting Christian God in the form of his name, he accepts the Grecian language and literature as his new God, something he worships as beautiful and saint-like, pure and untouchable.
Francis and Charles’ names mean “free man.” This is significant because they are the reminders of reality, Charles hates Henry and is incredibly against his power and influence but can’t seem to escape while Francis is also aware of how grotesque their group can be. Their names are also interlinked, which is probably because they were lovers somewhat. It’s also ironic as they are never truly free, not mentally.
Henry’s name means “house ruler,” this is quite obvious I feel but the house is their group, and he is constant control. In the bible, it also means Lord, he was their ruler in every sense and his name is a clear indicator of that.
Julian’s name comes from a Greek emperor, who was a persistent enemy of the Christians (a religion he clearly hates in the novel). He is an emperor surrounded by death, but is a man of culture and freedom.
Camilla means “helper to the priest,” this perhaps symbolises her role to Henry. She aided in the isolation of Charles, loved him and never denied him.
Bunny’s name means “little rabbit” but also is known as “who brings victory,” his death left the group victorious in their pursuit, one that was short-lived and a farce. His real name, Edmund, is quite ironic in its meaning, “wealthy protector,” it is a name of everything he is not. His family feigns wealth and he bullies his friends constantly, not protecting them from their lies and insecurities but only looking out for himself.

English: They huddled on the furniture, the only entertainment being the background noises: the screams, the cars, the thunder. They were everyday sounds but under the circumstances they felt inhuman. Felicita was leaning between Marco and him. It was beautiful, the relationship that the three of them had. He was her brother and Marco was her fake brother. She loved them both and it was obvious from her actions how comfortable she was with both of them.
—How long is this going to last? She asked. Marco continued to play with Felícita's hair, untangling it with his fingers and tucking it behind her ear over and over again.
—Lets survive two days first, okay?
—But what if we don't?
—We will.
—How long is this going to last? —Le pregunto a Félix. ¿Cuánto va a durar esto? Marco continuó jugando con el pelo de Felícita, desenredando con sus dedos y llevándolo detrás de su oreja una y otra vez
—Lets survive two days first, okay?
—But what if we don’t?
—We will.
