I'm partnering with the wonderful @void-flesh to bring you the My Chemical Romance Zine Challenge! Get creating with some DIY zine-ing and share your art and words with your friends! Use the tag #MCRzine or @mcrzines so that we can boost your work!

You can create a whole zine solo, or partner with friends for something collaborative :)

We encourage physical zines, but in order to make work accessible as physical copies even for people in places where shipping ain't cheap, we also encourage PRINT IT YOURSELF zines, with files set up for readers to print at home! 

Some notes: 

This is not a contest, or a time limited challenge! This is just to spark people's creativity! 

Related to above: you don’t need to submit anything to us - these are your personal projects! - but we’d love to be tagged so we can see what you made and boost your work!

Polished and professionally printed zines may be cool, but we are encouraging more DIY kinds of work. It's okay if you just have sharpies, glue, and your grandpa's busted xerox machine! Or perhaps the copy machine at your school is unattended?

Zine interest survey!

This zine (tentatively titled "just like me, fr") is designed to explore the complicated relationship we hold with the people we admire. It's meant to be a personal exploration on how you find yourself relating to My Chemical Romance + its members while exploring the assumptions that went into perceptions of relatability and accepting them. Submissions can be heavy and serious, or silly and fun!

This would be a project moderated by Sammy (@columbosunday) and myself, Kelly (@gerardpilled)

Submissions will be looked over and assignments will be determined based on interest and availability

If you choose to tackle a topic relating to a demographic, it is highly preferred and recommended that you belong to the demographic yourself. 

Respecting the identity and private lives of the real people associated with this zine is REQUIRED. No work that aims to seriously theorize further than information publicly given will be accepted. Any assumptions made should be clearly or contextually depicted as assumptions.

The prompt/example submission is primarily for ensuring you've thought of something!

If you wish to submit work with a partner, please submit the form individually and add your partner's info in the provided section

People might be rejected depending on number of responses!

This form is meant to gage initial interest in this zine at all, depending on the feedback it may or may not be used in topic distribution.

Please be at least 18 years old

Deadline for submissions will be determined based off initial response rate. Things are in very early stages so no promises on a finished product as of right now!

“You’ve Gotta Check This Band Out” A multi-bandom micro essay zine

Is there a band you’re obsessed with? No matter if its 00s pop-punk, folk music from 1960, a rock band you saw in your friends basement and never forgot- If you’re excited about a musician, I want to hear about it.

The details: What’s a micro essay?

A micro essay an essay around 200-700 words in length. For the purposes of this zine, it can be any format or style, no matter how experimental, as long as its nonfiction.

What can I write about?

This zine is going to focus on bands but is open to works about any musician or musical scene that you feel passionate about

What should I write about?

i’m most interested in looking at how music functions in a broader cultural context, but anything you’re passionate about, I wanna see. This can include but isn’t limited to: - How the sexual politics of a time period affected music - Analysis of how a cover song affects the original piece - Why this band you saw that one time was so rad - How various identity politics and music intersect and interact - Why everyone is wrong about [Insert widely hated album name here] - Why DID that secret chord David played please the lord?

Submissions will be open until June 7th!

You can send plain text and I will lay it out, or if you want to design your own page, including text, illustration, stickers, cut/paste, etc, please make it 5.5in x 8.5in and 300ppi resolution JPG

Some other rules/FAQs

YES it can be a piece thats already been published as long as you include where it was first published (your blog, another zine, etc)

YES its ok if its a little bit longer or shorter- the word limit is a soft guide, if its 756 words etc thats fine

YES comics are ok as long as they are nonfiction

If you an illustrator who wants to work on illustrating essays, email or dm me!

Contributors will receive a print copy, zine will also be posted online for free, and will be sold at-cost in my shop.
