We are still in the jungle close to the caribbean coast and it has been raining on and off for days. We rented some bikes and in the breaks between rain showers we have been exploring the coast and a village nearby that was not on our lonely planet guide, so we didnt really know what to expect - it turned out to be actually very nice. Several bungalows without windows surrounded by laundry hanging in the gardens were separated by banana trees and palms. There was not much to see except a school and a small restaurant where we ordered the plato del dia without knowing what it was. Nobody spoke english there since it was not touristic at all. We biked over 60km in the last two days and could thus experience a lot about the local culture! There is so many different sounds in the jungle - some of them can be really scary! Our jungle cabin does not have proper windows so we can enjoy the sound of nature to 100%. Howler monkeys woke us up yesterday, followed by a variety of singing birds. Welcome to the jungle! We are currently backpacking in Costa Rica for one month. The day we were supposed to catch our flight to Fiji, last February 20th, terrible cyclone Winston hit the Islands and left behind a huge devastation. We were lucky enough to have our flight canceled just in time, but when we flew there a week afterwards we were shocked by the effect of this natural disaster on the population. We visited a school to help as we could and and found families living inside since they houses fell apart during the cyclone. The school did not even look as a school anymore. No roof, books sunk in water, broken windows.. It was heartbreaking to see the children's teddy bears hanging outside to dry - their mum probably rescued the toys they could and tried to wash the mud out of them. Sometimes when traveling you have to close maps and travel guides and just get lost. This hidden, little fish and chips stand along the east coast in Tasmania near Bicheno gets fresh fish from a boat, cooks it and serves it straight away wrapped in paper.
