The True Shakespearean Tragedy of Philip Wittebane.
Spoilers for the finale underneath.
Do I still think that part of Belos’ actions was still fueled by not only his twisted hero complex (which I always thought since at least Hollow Mind) but also because of an underline sense of betrayal he felt after finding out his only family abandoned him for a life with a witch?
Yes
Am I actually okay with how the show ultimately only acknowledges his demented sense of puritanical justice as his sole reason for everything he’s done.
Surprisingly, yes. Let me explain.
I would have loved to see Philip’s backstory more fleshed out. To have confirmation about his feelings about going to save Caleb from the forces of evil, only to find out his own brother has fallen for witchcraft. It would have been great to finally meet Evelyn and flesh out Caleb’s feelings for her and his reasons for leaving. It would have been very appreciated to give The Story of the Brothers Wittebane in more detail.
However, I speak as a viewer. An outside force who desires clarity for their story purely because I find it fascinating. A lover of true tragedy when the fatal flaw of the “main character” (in this case, Philip in this scenario) is the thing that ultimately spells their doom. It comes from the want to have my curiosity satisfied.
In universe, however, who is left to actually care about Belos’ underline motives and feelings? Caleb and countless of his “other lives” were murdered in cold blood by his hands. Hunter, the last remaining essence of his brother, had been pushed away to the point that the teen completely denounced him, and just wants him to go down. Belos had direct hand in the death of the only remaining soul, other than himself, that could have known Caleb and Evelyn’s story in Flapjack. All the witches and demons just want to live and wouldn’t care for their would-be-hunter’s motive for genocide.
Then there is Luz, the first human he’s met since killing Caleb, and the last fellow human he’ll ever see. In his mind, she surely would sympathize with his plight on some level, right? A fellow human trapped in hell itself amongst evil. Sure she has a bit of Caleb’s old craziness for overindulging in sin, but maybe it’s not too late for her. At the very least, Philip knows what a bleeding, naive heart Luz has, so surely she wouldn’t just sit back to watch him die. Surely, she would care about him enough. He can use that to his advantage and have his story of heroism continue on.
But she doesn’t. She stares on in somber disgust just like how Caleb’s ghost has been haunting him for centuries and the rest of the grim walkers he cruelly killed. Luz doesn’t care and rightfully so. In the end, all she wanted was Belos to be gone for good. She doesn’t care about his tragic backstory. She doesn’t care about his underline reasoning for everything he’s done. He’s the monster that would kill innocent people due to his own prejudices. He attempted to destroy her loved ones again and again. He’s the one that made Hunter just to die. Philip destroyed any goodwill Luz could of had for him centuries ago when he used her sympathy to manipulate her. He doesn’t deserve the mercy the Collector attempted to give him, and Luz knew that.
He KILLED her.
So ultimately, no one is left to mourn or wonder about Philip Wittebane, the orphan raised by his brother, only for Caleb to chose a life with Evelyn over him. No one is left to learn about any lingering sense of regret he might have. He will be remembered as nothing but a self-righteous monster.
No one is left to care about his story, and it’s entirely Philip’s own fault.

don’t leave me. please.
edit: as @justahumblesideblog said before , i think belos/philip’s feelings towards his brother stem from a feeling of betrayal and abandonment of him, and his inner child just wanted his brother back. but i just wanted to make it clear that i don’t condone his actions in any way even if he could have been at least somewhat innocent as a child. anyways thanks for coming to my ted talk have a nice day/night byeee

It’s not just Caleb being the older sibling that makes this look so impactful to Belos though. The Wittebane brothers were orphans. They had moved to a new environment together. Caleb was his sole family and possibly the head of their small household for YEARS before he met Evalyn. Philip “braved” a world full of evil in an attempt to save his brother from their grasp. He was meant to be his brother’s hero and save him from evil. In the end though, Philip killed Caleb in cold blood, continuously keeps killing him in different forms, and he has had to live with that for centuries. This is the look of a person staring down their younger brother who he cared for since they were kids, and that younger brother has done the single worse thing they could have done and has continued to that that thing over several life times. The look of someone who had finally found his specific place in the world, only to have someone take it all away for selfish reasons and trying to destroy your home in every way imaginable.
What gets me about this part is the fact that Caleb is Belos's older brother. Like imagine your older sibling, someone you may look up to and seek to make proud or at the very least be on good terms with, looking down at you with utter disappoint at everything you've become & everything you've done to yourself and others.

For The Future Spoilers underneath
Okay, now it’s time for my first analysis piece because after rewatching this scene a few times, I couldn’t help but notice Hunter’s body language during Bosha and “Mikki’s” BS.
Tumblr media
Hunter and Camilla don’t really have a big reaction to hearing Boscha is the School Body President (which makes sense because they don’t have any personal experience or opinion of her) but I couldn’t help but zero in on Hunter, while still not emoting much, is still very much cagey looking almost all through the scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the first shot of him with the gang reacting, he is purposely not looking ahead and continues keeping his arms crossed. It’s not Ben just him keeping the same resting face and throughout the scene, he is looking in different directions in both of these screenshots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even when Gus temporarily breaks him out of this state for a playful introduction he goes right back to looking away and keeping his arms cross, no words spoken, and no further emotions shown in his face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even after they are all kicked out, Hunter is still emoting very little, only answering to Luz’s bold plan with a arch of an eyebrow while everyone gasps in disbelief.
Now, we know that Hunter is a very emotional boy. He has had very over the top reaction faces and is eager to talk in order to offer anything to the conversation. So then, why is he so aloof during this entire scene? It only took me a second to realize after asking myself it.
“You know what I want, Belos? I want to live the Emperor’s Coven, and never set foot in that throne room again…”
Boscha is sitting on a throne. They converted the area into an entire throne room. Back in “Thanks to Them” Hunter specfically declared he never wanted to set a single foot in Belos’ throne room (where it is implied he was abused numerous times) and while this is not the same room, it’s easy to see how Hunter could make the connections since they both serve a similar purpose.
So Hunter, who is going through a whole lot already, just silently let’s his friends deal with this BS as he keeps his eyes off of the throne and not say anything. It’s no wonder of course, but man, the crew really do love fitting in Hunter angst, even if it’s just a background thing that is pretty missable.

I got to say, major props to the owl crew for making Belos’ true form a literal rotting corpse. Screw the censors! He is a constantly decaying mass of flesh LOOOOONG pass his prime and I am HERE for it!

Anyways, to all my fellow bisexuals out there who have been hurt today, I see you. Let's be honest, this situation reeks of biphobia, and the worst part is that the call is coming from inside the house. This is biphobia coming from our own community. And I know that's nothing new, but it still hurts.
So, if you're hurting, and feeling isolated from the rest of the community right now, if you're feeling disconnected from the Heartstopper fandom because of this, if seeing another bi person forced out because some people only accept queerness if you have a partner of the same gender is making you feel invalidated and alone, this post is for you.
I see you, I love you, I support you. Your bisexuality is valid, you are queer enough, you belong in queer spaces. It doesn't matter if you've only dated one gender or the other, or if you've never dated anyone at all, or if you've dated a mix of genders. It doesn't matter if you have a preference or not. It doesn't matter how you dress or how you act or if you fit certain stereotypes or boxes, or if you don't fit them. No matter what, you are a part of this community.
The people who don't want us in this community are wrong, and they're narrow-minded. It's the LGBTQIA+ community. We've always been a part of it, and we always will be.
