Troy Baker’s Jason voice in Arkham knight is so good like he really ate that up. I think the key was that he was really good at doing the “I’m angry but my voice is cracking like I’m about to cry (because I am)” thing, which is vital for any Jason voice

The thing is, Jason’s gender presentation as a motorcycle-tough guy is part of a costume, it was constructed as part of his Red Hood persona to project a specific image (if you’re gonna take over the criminal underground, ya gotta look the part). This is never stated explicitly in canon, but I’m intuiting it from the way his style of dress changes once he becomes Red Hood. Sometimes I wonder about how aware of this he is, like does he consciously view it that way or was it more of a subconscious thing? Most people are not tapped into the “gender presentation is not innate and is a performance” meta so it could go either way. I’ve seen some people compare it to the “over exaggerated on purpose” masculinity that some masc gay men present themselves with, and I do love that interpretation also

One thing DC has gone wrong with batfamily comics is the fact that basically everyone has died. It makes it so when the person dies, there's no more shock or sadness because we all know that they're going to be resurrected.

When Jason died, it was a BIG DEAL. Because nobody thought that ROBIN would die. And die so violently. And he was a kid. It shook the comic world and changed Bruce. And then he stayed dead for like idk 10-15 years. Nobody thought he was coming back. And his death was something special. He was batmans biggest failure. That was the vibe and the reason for his resurrection.

But now, basically everyone has died and come back to life. It's no big deal and if I was in the comic universe and I heard a robin died, i would probably brush it off since they'll probably be alive again in like 3 weeks. It no longer provides the utter shock and suspense that Death in the Family did.

Anyway, DC has been too loose and repetitive with death and resurrection and that has basically made them lose edge and shock value in that arena

can we talk about how Damian’s culture shock had not been addressed in any significant way ever in canon or fanon?

imagine you are 10 years old, your mother loves you dearly, you are told all your life stories of how important and legendary your father The Batman is, you are to be a strong warrior-assassin-son and you excel in your training, your mother and grandfather are proud of you until they say you have to leave.

you lose everything. your home country, language, religion, relationships. your comfort foods, smells, clothes. everything.

you're given to your father who you have been told you need to prove yourself to, you are being treated as an enemy, you have no allies, no one will explain the unwritten unspoken rules especially not your father who has decided you are a nuisance.

they tell you your past and everyone in it is evil, your home is evil, your mother and grandfather are evil. you cannot have any connection to anything or anyone familiar.

your father dies. they all still hate you. they will not let you go home.

#sometimes i wonder how to account for this when the reason for a certain performance is bc of how normative it is #like ok classic example that's bamboozled me: mac from iasip #mac is obsessed w masculinity. hes into karate and the gym and dresses in muscle tees and etc #BUT a lot of that is bc he's obsessed w upholding the idea of what a masculine straight man should be. hes gay and deeply closeted/represse #and its also a kind of triangulation of desire (cant obsess over men bc thats gay.
