Circus Man as photographed in August 2022. The idea of wearable and movable ceramics interests me a great deal, especially when connected by thread. Thoughts August 2022. ‘Is thread more gentle than ceramics? Hair wrapped around a toe or finger can cut off circulation, silk can cut fingers before it breaks…yet as a weaver I see the softness of the resultant cloth from thousands of threads woven under and over each other…perhaps I romanticise the notion and physicality of thread? I see it as comforting and incongruent to the cold rigidity of glazed ceramic. Threads connect us and offer us warmth… I adore how his ruff is attached with thread…the combination of two age old techniques; the thread loops through and binds the ceramic ruff, without the thread the ruff would not stay, without the ruff there would be no need for thread. I see this interplay, I guess, as a beautiful relationship.’

August 2022: ‘Circus Man asked for his collar to be changed. He wanted his ruff to be popped on. I was more than happy to oblige as it is so ostentatiously delicious, sat cool in this warm weather in it’s stripy glory with its pencil marks. An imperfect ruff fit for (imperfect) royalty.’

Watercolour roses painted this morning. These were painted alongside my children painting roses too, documenting how I squeezed time in for something I just felt I needed to do whilst also still being present around my children.

Hands down, one of the most conflicting and heart wrenching things since having children is the inability to start and continue a project at my own choosing. Needing to paint for longer but having and wanting to sort out small people and give them time, mulling an idea over but having to leave it for a long time, not being able to reach desired potential because of meeting little people’s needs. Society informs you it’s a relatively short time because parenting ends when they go to nursery? Or is it when they go to school? That is the accepted way and then they need you less, society says. What if you wake over and over, gripped by the cold steely hands of the grief of attempting to live life in this strange way…a way you cannot make sense of or function in, yet you are expected to. I sit proudly on the fringe, like Diane Arbus or Cindy Sherman. Too many times, lost in the propaganda of motherhood…the ideals promoted to death…the illusory smokes and mirrors, I align myself to popular society and forget that I was never made fit that ideal. That even in the art world, art is a popularity contest to be sold and marketed by companies using a natural wholesome look, selling both an ideal of the perfect mother and the perfect artist…with the lifestyle cues and images to go with it. Boxes to fit into, even as an artist. This morning I spent painting flowers with my babies. This evening I have spent reminding myself what I align to based on my value system and have collected together a selection of artist biographies and books. Artists who were here a long time before the gross mass manipulation of social media. If anyone has any book recommendations about these general subject areas they’d be gratefully received 🙏♥️
