regular reminder to queer people on the internet

queerbaiting:

the creative team behind a piece of media deliberately playing up ship tease or queer coding (either in canon or in interviews) to convince queer people to watch the show under the guise that there might be representation in it one day, then never actually making that representation canonical because they don't want to alienate homophobic/transphobic viewers

not queerbaiting:

a character who is confirmed in canon to be queer, but isn't in a relationship with anyone (e.g. a lesbian character who doesn't have a love interest)

a character who is canonically queer and canonically in a relationship, just not the relationship you personally wish they were in (e.g. "i ship A and B but A got in a relationship with C instead")

a character who is confirmed in canon to be bi/pan/ace/aro/trans who is in an M/F relationship

a queer relationship that the creator views as canon and tried to make as explicit as possible, but was stopped from making canon in the actual media due to censorship (e.g. korrasami)

a canonically queer character who has a different identity than you that you view as bad representation because you think your identity is ~ more progressive ~ or whatever than their identity (e.g. i have unfortunately seen lesbians who will criticize perfectly good representation of queer men on the basis that they would have been better as lesbians)

a canonically queer character who shares your identity but has different experiences than yours in a way that means you struggle to personally relate to the character

any other instance of a canonically queer character who you personally dislike/don't relate to. if you think a queer character was poorly written or stereotypical or had any other issues, you're definitely allowed to criticize that! but if the character is canonically queer, it is by definition not queerbaiting

A Return to Tumblr?

Hello friends,

A lot has changed in my life since we last spoke that will be too much to put here, but I’ve ditched the man - we were not working out for each other - and am now dating a tall beautiful woman named Jaye, who is so good to me. I finished my honours thesis which I was writing about in the previous posts, and started but did not finish graduate school, thanks to the pandemic. The world feels like it’s been free-falling into the collapse of society as we know it.

The last time I posted on this blog, the world had been looking up - the U.S had a black president who was queer-friendly (although problematic in his own ways), gay marriage had recently been legalized throughout the U.S, and society seemed to be opening up to the idea of individual differences and communal thriving, to looking out for one another in our communities and offering support to those in need. I was young and naive and hopeful.

While I am still young, I am far less optimistic about the state of our society, although no less hopeful. I am more mentally stable and self-aware to boot. I have experienced a lot of pain and difficulty since my last post, but a lot of thrilling and positive life-changing events and discoveries as well. I find that the other options for social media are less interesting to me, and maybe I can find a better community on tumblr. Fellow leftist queers please follow, and I will try to post on here. Maybe I will be more successful than the last time I tried to commit to a New Years blog resolution.

January 4

Hey tumblr,

I actually started writing this a few minutes ago but my computer froze and I had to force restart and I lost all my progress so here we go again.

Today was the first day of classes! It was pretty fun, I love learning and it’s always fun to be back in school again, it feels good.

As expected, I’m super achy today from squash yesterday (especially in my right arm and shoulder), but it’s good! That means I’m getting stronger, and I’m excited for that. Although I have a feeling like it’ll be worse tomorrow...

I have a morning class again tomorrow so I have to go to bed early, but at least I got my paper done and handed in! Now all I have to worry about for a while is reading, especially because I’m only taking 3 essay courses this semester!! I’ll have so much less writing to do, it’ll be wonderful.

Anyway, sorry this is short but my life isn’t that interesting lol

January 3

Hey Tumblr,

So I’m officially back in London! I spent the morning playing with my little cousin’s some more at my aunt’s house, left around 1, picked up Cinnamon and headed over to Haitian’s place. As soon as I got there we had some much needed sex then headed out to the gym to play squash! I had never played squash before, and honestly I never really played many sports throughout my life, so most of the hour was spent working on my co-ordination and proper form, after that was down I could finally learn how to hit the ball lol. I improved quite a lot over our one hour session though! I went from not knowing how to play whatsoever and being able to hit nothing, to being able to hit about 60% of the serves, and even do some rallying! It was a lot of fun - the hour went by like a flash - and by the end I was sweating and my heart was racing, which means I got a good workout! My right arm and shoulders feel a little week too, so I’ll probably have some muscle ache by tomorrow.

After the gym we went out on a date for some sushi, which was absolutely wonderful (although I completely forgot to take pictures to show you! I will for sure next time), but I ate way too much, as always happens at sushi buffets. After sushi we went and got some groceries for his place (because pantries and fridge are always empty after long breaks), and some ingredients for packed lunches for me so I don’t waste money on buying lunch at the cafeteria (plus cafeteria food is usually not very healthy).

Now I’m sitting upstairs in Haitian’s room while he cooks his meals for the week, writing this entry, drinking a glass of cranberry raspberry juice. Soon I’ll have to finish my paper for one class, do some reading, and get ready for the first day of school tomorrow! I start a new class tomorrow, which is called Intro to the Hebrew Bible, and then have my full year Learning and Behaviour Psych course.

The picture for you today is not a selfie, but the plush toy that Haitian bought me for my birthday (which was in December), which was finally delivered!

Day 2

Hey Tumblr,

I made it safe to my aunt’s house! We left Ennismore at around 2:00pm, stopped in London at around 5:30pm for dinner, and got to Sarnia at around 8:00pm! I got to see my little cousins (one aged 2.5 years, one aged 2 months), we exchanged Christmas gifts, and had a glass of wine! My mom just recently went to bed and now I’m sitting in the playroom writing this entry while taking a break from my paper. I finally finished data analysis and the results section, and now am writing the discussion! When I finish that, I’ll just have the abstract and references to do and I’ll be finished. Tomorrow I’ll have time to do some last minute editing and print it off to be handed in on Monday.

Tomorrow I’ll get to pick Cinnamon up from her babysitter and finally get to see Haitian again! I think his flight lands in London at 11:30am, and I should be back in town by 2:00pm. We have a busy day planned, which you’ll hear all about tomorrow!

For now there’s not much to write, but I wanted to write something, because it’s good to get in the habit of keeping a blog or journal of some kind, if only for the memories.

New Years Resolution

Hey Tumblr,

Part of my new years resolution this year is to write here daily! Either an entry about my life, or a short story, or a poem, or some kind of writing to hone my writing skills and keep a daily log of my life. So let me keep you updated on my life as of the first day of January, 2016.

Last night my sister and her boyfriend Adam came over to my mom's house and we rang in the new year! I drank a little too much (which as of now means one glass of wine, two glasses of champagne...yeah, I'm a lightweight) and woke up this morning with a slight hangover. We listened to music, watched the ball drop in New York on T.V., and adorned ourselves with neat necklaces and party hats (even our dog Leo got a party hat!). Other than writing in this journal, I have a couple other new year resolutions: first, I want to start exercising 3 times a week, either jogging, lifting weights, or playing some sort of sport (my guy Haitian has agreed to help teach me squash so we'll play that once a week instead of working out!). By this, I aim to improve my heart health (I have a congenital heart condition and still have yet to get the procedure to fix it done, which I hope to also do in the future!) and to tone up my butt and legs, which are beautifully voluptuous and curvy, but a little flabby. Second, I want to start going to therapy and working on my self-esteem issues.

I'm in Ennismore as of right now, but am leaving to go back to London tomorrow - my mom is driving me, so we'll stop in Sarnia and spend the night at my aunt's and then pick up my hedgehog Cinnamon from my friend Elorah's place, who's been babysitting her for the Christmas break. I should be in London by 2pm, I'll need to grab some info from the rat lab for my final paper (which I'm supposed to be writing right now heheh...it's due Monday), then I'll go out grocery shopping with Haitian, then to the gym, then out for sushi and hopefully back home for some sex. After all that, I'll need to edit and finish my final paper, and then off to bed. I miss him, because it's been more than 2 weeks since we've seen each other! Although honestly it doesn't feel that long, the break has gone by like a flash.

It is also my aim with this journal to save some visual memories, so I'll be attaching pictures of whatever I speak about in the entry at the end. If there's nothing relevant to the entry, then I will simply take a selfie so that you can see what I looked like on any given day! So these follow:
