Husband appreciation post (it’s about to get sappy y’all) 🥰 Nick, we’ve been married almost two years and wow things have changed. We went from our city lives, both working tons, and barely scraping by to our new beautiful life with our son in a small Midwest town ❤️ I’m so proud of us for growing so much especially in the last 6 months since Silas joined us. It brings me so much joy to see you with our son smiling, laughing, and just genuinely having a great time being a dad. When Silas is having a particularly rough time (teething is hard guys) we use our naptime/bedtime roller on the bottom of his feet to help promote some peace and calmness when it’s otherwise hard to find. Today’s the day I freeze these candles to get all the wax out and into my trash can! You might be asking why the heck I would do such a thing... well candles are full of crap you probably didn’t even know about. A friend of mine told me that my candles were toxic and I just couldn’t believe it so I did some research and below it what I found... “Most candles are made of paraffin wax, which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned (both are known carcinogens). In fact, the toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes.” “Other toxic chemicals that may be present in the paraffin mixture and released through burning include: Acetone, Trichlorofluoromethane, Carbon Disulfide, 2-Butanone, Trichloroethane, Trichloroethene, Carbon Tetrachloride, Tetrachloroethene, Chlorobenzene, Ethylbenzene, Styrene, Xylene, Phenol, Cresol, Cyclopentene. Some of the toxins are found in other products such as paint, laquer and varnish removers– that’s potent and powerful stuff!” “Petro-soot from paraffin candles gives off the same soot as the exhaust of a diesel engine, and is considered just as dangerous as second hand smoke, causing problems from headaches to lung cancer. Paraffin fumes have been found to cause tumors in the kidneys and liver of lab animals.” I felt that mom guilt hard when I learned what were in those yummy smelling candles in our house... but don’t fret! There’s an alternative that not only smells amazing but promotes health and wellness! How magical right? Oils are the way to go if you want a yummy smelling home without all those chemicals. Because who wants to breathe in something that can cause cancer?! NOT ME! (and I most definitely don’t want that for my family). Im gonna turn my old candle jars into other useful things like holding homemade lotion, bath salts, or maybe for holding bulk items in my pantry. Dinosaur fluff butt 💁🏻 some may think I’m crazy for cloth diapering but it’s honestly so simple and so easy. Cloth diapering has so many benefits: -soft on baby’s skin -no chemicals (if you are using plant based laundry detergent) -customizable absorption so no diaper changes at night time -eco friendly -overall more affordable than disposables -simple snaps button them on so they are just as easy to use as disposables (no more safety pins and folding cloth) -cute as heck prints (like these dinosaurs!) I love using cloth diapers and knowing that chemicals aren’t entering little Silas’s body. I also love that we are doing our part to keep thousands of disposables out of our landfills. I did a little research for y’all to see some crazy fact about disposables... “Over 92% of all single-use diapers end up in a landfill. [4] In 1988, nearly $300 million dollars were spent annually just to discard disposable diapers, whereas cotton diapers are reused 50 to 200 times before being turned into rags. [4] No one knows how long it takes for a disposable diaper to decompose, but it is estimated to be about 250-500 years, long after your children, grandchildren and great, great, great grandchildren will be gone. [5] Disposable diapers are the third largest single consumer item in landfills, and represent about 4% of solid waste. In a house with a child in diapers, disposables make up 50% of household waste. [5] Disposable diapers generate sixty times more solid waste and use twenty times more raw materials, like crude oil and wood pulp. [3] The manufacture and use of disposable diapers amounts to 2.3 times more water wasted than cloth. [3] Over 300 pounds of wood, 50 pounds of petroleum feedstocks and 20 pounds of chlorine are used to produce disposable diapers for one baby EACH YEAR. I’d say I’m about half crunchy mamma 💁🏻 I never in a million years thought I’d do the crunchy mamma things I do with baby Silas but here I am doing them and freaking loving it! What crunchy mamma things do you do that you didn’t think you would before having kids? I’ll list mine below 😊 -bedshare -cloth diaper -baby led weaning (although we haven’t started yet since he hasn’t met readiness standards) -Using essential oils on him -I would do babywearing but Silas isn’t a fan haha he likes to wiggle and be free 😅 Something I also did that I didn’t expect was choose to stay home rather than return to work right away.
