------------------------------------------------ Chapter 17
Kit watched the ramp rising, shutting out the sunlight. His breath was heavy as he maintained the pressure on Nancy’s wound. Just before the ramp closed Kit was jolted by the distinctive clang of metal on metal. The ramp was forced open enough for Bucky to squeeze through, he seemed dishevelled but unhurt as he stood up, his head brushing the roof of the jet. All colour left his face as his eyes landed on Nancy. Words lost him entirely as he fell to his knees by her side. Kit looked at him helplessly.
“The Wakandan outreach centre, London, they’ll be able to help her.” Bucky stuttered towards the pilot. He took Nancy’s hand that was limp by her side. and enveloped it in his flesh hand squeezing it firmly. leaning over her, he swept a flyaway strand of hair off her forehead. Tears pricked in his eyes.
“Nancy…” he whispered.
Sam dropped through a hatch above them, landing lightly on the floor behind Bucky. They shared a look and Sam dropped the shield, squeezing Bucky’s shoulder.
“Nancy, please, stay with me.” Bucky pleaded, holding up her head, two fingers finding the weak pulse in her neck. A shiver ran through him, and Nancy’s eyes fluttered slightly. Bucky squeezed her hand tighter.
“Nance…”
“Bucky, you’re okay… Buck…what happened?” Green eyes peaked out between her lashes.
“Oh, thank goodness, you’re going to be ok, the Wakandans will help you, I’m so sorry, I’m sorry...” he pressed his lips to her forehead. Kit shifted his hands as Sam passed him fresh wad of bandages to stem the bleeding. Sam was talking frantically on the phone. Nancy’s eyes darted round the plane frantically taking everything in. Her eyes landed on Kit, all his focus was on the wound in her chest, he was shaking, his breath catching in his throat. Nancy tried to reach for him, with the hand not locked in Bucky’s, but her arm felt heavy and detached from her.
“Kit,” she choked out, “Kit, look at me.” Kit shook his head, her eyes snapped to Bucky’s, a wordless exchange took place as he removed her hand from his grip and slipped his crumpled jacket under her to support her head. His hands covered Kit’s releasing him from his trace. Kit slid back, finally meeting his sister’s gaze.
“I’m sorry, it should have been me.” He stuttered “it’s all my fault.”
“No. Don’t you say that.”
“Shuri’s let the London team know, they’re preparing a medical team, she says Bucky should stay close, she thinks their bond could help her.” Sam said, hanging up the phone. Looking at the scene by his feet. Kit looked like a small child whilst Bucky seemed older than ever. All extended youth seemed to have evaporated from his form as he watched life spilling from his soulmate. The sight seemed too personal, too private, even Kit had looked away, curled up against the wall. Sam marched into the cock pit, he could be more helpful there.
The journey could have been years for all Bucky knew, Nancy drifted in and out of consciousness speaking fractured sentences, he shushed them away, telling her to save her strength. She was quite for what seemed like an age before her voice returned, stronger and clearer than before.
“I need you to promise me something.” She said to Bucky.
“Don’t talk like that.”
“You have to promise me you won’t fall apart, promise me, you won’t go looking for vengeance, you or him, I know he’s still in there, but you can’t let him out.”
“Nancy stop.”
“it’s okay, you can let me go. I think it’s time.” She winced pain filling her feature.
“You’re not going anywhere, you’re not leaving me.” Bucky turned to the cockpit, “How far are we?” He shouted.
“We’re close, little further.” Rayden responded, his voice laced with guilt though he pushed the engines to their limit.
“Bucky I’m sorry,” tears swam down her cheeks, “Kit.” She called, unable to turn her head, paralysed in pain. Her brother slid over to her, taking her hand in his.
“I’m here, I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere.”
“Kit, I missed you so much.”
“I missed you too CeCe.” He cited his childhood nickname for her. A simpler time when his baby sister came home from the hospital and two separate syllables was too much for him.
“I need you to know, I forgive you, for leaving, for hiding, it’s okay.”
“No, its not, you not forgiving me, you’re not going to die, you’re going to be angry at me for long time, I’ll have grovel and plead, I have regain your trust and even then you’ll still bring it up every time we disagree on something, you’re my baby sister and you’re not going anywhere.” He said firmly, Nancy smiled softly, a chuckle escaping her lips. Her breathing escalated, she choked and coughed, blood seeping out of her mouth. Sam appeared beside them once more, reaching down he swept Nancy up in his arms, cradled to his chest like a baby. Her head lulled to one side. Kit stood to protest, but Bucky held up a hand.
“He’ll get her there faster.” the ramp started to lower, as Bucky leaned over, kissing her cheek softly.
“Don’t go where I can’t follow.” He whispered in her ear, if Sam heard he was pretending not to. Kit squeezed her hand before Sam dove out into London’s sky.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bucky felt her fingers twitch first. His gaze shifted up instantly until it rested on her eyes. They shifted beneath her lids, responding at last to the bright lights above her sick bed. The outreach centre had taken her in fixed her up, she had stabilised by the time Kit and Bucky had made it to her. It had been two days now, her wound was healed but her body was still recovering. Wakandan medicine was an amazing thing, Bucky was fascinated, remembering his days on the battlefield in the war, how many would have lived had their facilities been available then. She was squeezing his hand now, and he smiled squeezing back.
“Nancy?” He spoke softly his free hand sweeping across her cheekbone. Her eyes fluttered open, green peeking through her thick lashes.
“Buck… Bucky.” she croaked out.
“Oh, doll you had me scared back there.” he exhaled heavily, drawing his chair closer to her bed.
“The witches?” she asked frantically trying to sit up. bucky held her back down with soft shushing noises.
“We left them there, not the last we’ll see of them no doubt, but for now you’re safe, that’s all that matters.
“Where do we go from here? Back to Wakanda?”
“We can’t.” his face fell into a solum line.
“What’s happened?”
“Duncan Everitt is dead.” he said simply, watching a crease form between her brows.
“How?”
“We don’t know, but if someone can get to him there then its not safe enough for you.” he insisted. Nancy’s brow furrowed but any protest was cut off by Kit rushing into the room. He was by her side in an instant.
“Don’t ever put me through that again.” he smiled down at her.
“Where will we go?” she asked looking between the two men.
“I will go to Wakanda, Duncan may have hunted me, but he was one of my men once, he deserved better than what he got, I will find out what happened to him.” he said defiantly. Nancy nodded, Bucky help her to sit upright in the bed. “I’ll get to see dad, apologies, start to make amends.”
“He’ll be over the moon, to see you again, when I told him I think he didn’t dare to dream, he won’t believe until he sees you. I know I didn’t.” she looked up at her brother, he was now freshly shaved, and his hair trimmed, he wore a loose-fitting white t-shirt and some black silk trousers, he’d made him self at home here. Nancy was pleased, he looked more like his old self, younger, softer in the face without the wiry beard.
“I was thinking, we could go to America, Louisiana probably, I got a place there, it’s not much, but…”
“I’d like that.” she said quickly smiling, she caught Kit’s eye who smiled in agreement. Whatever had happened, Kit trusted Bucky now.
“Sam would be close by too, if trouble were to find us.” he smiled taking her hand again.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It took a few days to prepare, finding flights, sorting out her visa, getting Samara to deliver her passport to Sam on the other side of London to avoid anyone following them to get to Nancy. Kit left with Rayden for his journey to Wakanda, it was a tearful farewell on Nancy’s part as Bucky finally left her side to give the siblings a moment of privacy. Nancy felt stronger every day, moving out of her sick bed and into a shared room with Bucky. Not wanted to risk going outside she walked up and down the stairs in outreach centre, outwards appearance resembled a tower block, one of the larger centres held, it had a lot of stairs. Shuri contacted her, sending over a replacement top with bullet proof properties, the other torn to shreds by the bullet and the doctors. Her father fretted down the phone to her, even her mother called, though it was cool and brief her mother did at least sound half relieved to hear her awake, Kit had insisted she’d fretted constantly before Nancy had woken up, this she found hard to believe. Eventually it was time to leave, set off for a fresh start. As Nancy curled up in the wide 1st class seat with Bucky beside her she felt herself poised at a precipice, a brand new chapter of her life.

Chapter 16
They discussed a plan whilst Kit steered the boat towards the shore. They’d contacted Rayden, their Wakandan pilot, to meet them at a small secluded mooring west of the harbour they’d left. Sam was fully kitted out, looking too big for the close quarters in the boat, Bucky was absentmindedly dancing his knife across his knuckles, watching Nancy pull her hair back into a long thick braid. She stuck her tongue out playfully at him.
“Oi you two stop flirting,” Sam snapped his fingers causing Bucky to turn to face him.
“Sorry, I am listening.” Nancy apologised.
“We don’t know much about these ‘witches’ but I suggest you let me and Bucky handle things, you just focus on getting you and your brother on that plane, we’ll cover you.”
“I can help,” Kit called out before Nancy had a chance to say the same thing. As if he was reading her mind, Bucky reached out closing his metal fingers around her hand briefly. Sam continued.
“We can’t risk either of you being taken.”
“And when you have me, what do you intend to do with me. Take me to America turn me into another of their weapons?” Kit asked scowling as Sam climbed up into the cockpit, Nancy and Bucky hot on his heels.
“Kit please,” Nancy placed a hand on his solider and he frowned in returned.
“No, it’s alright, we’ll take you to Wakanda, to you father, they’ll keep you safe, they’d do anything for your dad.” Kit nodded reluctantly.
“He’ll be over the moon.” Nancy smiled.
“Yeah, I have missed him,” Kit took a deep breath of sea air. He didn’t like to imagine his father, he didn’t like the guilt he felt at lying to him. But if the witches had found him then the others wouldn’t be far behind, that meant Wakanda would be the safest place for him. He felt it was selfish how reluctant he was to leave his little boat and life on the water, the thought of returning to society filled him with dread. But then so did the thought of staying and leaving Nancy all over again. He wouldn’t risk them finding out about her. He watched Bucky watching her. He wanted to thank him and throttle him with equal measure. He kept reminding himself that Bucky would protect her, they were soulmates he didn’t have a choice, fate declared he would keep her safe, love her, honour her and follow her anywhere. A small voice cause him to remember the soulmate bound was two way, everything Bucky would do for Nancy, Nancy would do for Bucky. That was not a pleasant thought. His mind jumped through thoughts whilst they neared the mooring. He had his rucksack strapped to his back, he had always kept one packed in case he needed to make a quick getaway. He had an unmarked gun strapped in his holster, he’d procured it for protection, he hadn’t had to use it yet.
“They’re already here.” Sam said, redwing had made its way to their intended mooring spot, the video feed back showed the same three woman standing at the water’s edge. With a nod to Bucky, Sam launched himself into the air, flying straight up. Bucky turned to the siblings,
“The plane is cloaked, when you’re close enough he’ll drop to shield. Follow redwing and it’ll show you the way.” He scowled at his last words. Just as he’d scowled at Sam when he’d run over the plan. Nancy had been there too, heard every word but she knew how worried Bucky was. She reached out to him, stroking her thumb across his cheek, kit turned away from the intimate gesture, giving the pair a moment of privacy. Bucky kissed the palm of her hand, a gesture he’d performed so many times. The familiar shiver ran through them both and Nancy could’ve sworn she saw a tear in his eye. Sam made his signal, the shield spun down through the air knocking one of the three witches down to the ground. The boat was still a few yards from land, but Bucky managed to leap the distance, bringing his fist down on the second witch, she had been raising a gun towards the boat, the shot rang out but missed its target, piercing the boat’s hull. Nancy ducked as the sound ricocheted around her. Sam dove through the air heading for the third witch, who was bracing to meet him. The second was fighting back against Bucky as he attempted to pin her down. The first witch was rising back off the ground. Nancy took her moment and dove into the water, Kit right by her side. She’d always been a strong swimmer, but sea water burned her eyes seeped into her mouth, still she stayed under, holding her breath and attempting to swim straight. A hand, Kit’s she presumed, grasped her wrist pulling her along with him. It gave them the head start they needed, the witches, momentarily distracted, didn’t see them enter the water. Still suspecting them to be on board, the first which flung a small ball though the air till it landed on the deck, within moments the petrol Kit had spread on the deck ignited and the bout was dancing with flames in seconds. The other witches heads snapped round gazing at the flames in horror.
“What have you done!” The third witch screamed, now she was locked in battle with Sam, two hands pushing against the shield as he pushed her towards the water. The second witch had rolled out from beneath Bucky and she crouched facing him, gun pointed at his head. He blocked the shot with his vibranium hand, crushing the gun’s barrel. The third witch leapt on him from behind, his reflexes kicked in as he reached back, grabbing her and in one fluid movement he had her flying into the second witch as she drew another gun. He jumped to his feet. He looked around instinctively for Nancy, her and kit were out of the water and tearing towards the wood land, redwing darting through the trees ahead of them. The witches recovered fast than he expected and now they followed his gaze.
“That way!” the first which called taking off after them, Bucky caught her in moments. He pressed a blade to her neck, but the witch was quick on her feet. She flicked a small metal instrument out of her pocket and jabbed it into his side. The shock ran though his body, bringing him to his knees. She kicked him straight in the jaw before sprinting away. Sam took off again, but the third witch still clung to the shield. Flipping backwards he loosened her grip and she fell back down. Making another dive he knocked the witch back, pinning her to the ground. Bucky found his feet intime to race after the second witch who was following the first.
Kit held back his full speed to stay level with Nancy, he didn’t have a chance to marvel at her speed, though inferior to his own it was still remarkable. She constantly looked over her shoulder, checking his back as much as he was checking hers. The plane’s shields had dropped when the first shot went off. Nancy dropped and rolled across the floor as the bullet sailed over her. She was back on her feet in an instant. kit glanced back to see bucky crash into one of the witches knocking them off course. Only one was approaching them now. Nancy and he could outrun her, but they couldn’t outrun the bullets. Kits feet hit the ramp before Nancy. He pulled her up after him as an explosion blasted behind them.
“Bucky!” Nancy screamed, turning to head back. Kit stopped her, grabbing her around the middle and pulling her into the plane. The explosion threw up dust everywhere, their ears were ringing from the blast, they never saw the gun, they never heard the shot. Pain erupted through Nancy’s chest. She fell against her bother, he barely had time to think before he threw her over his shoulder and dashed into the plane.
“Nancy, Nancy,” Kit shook her lightly as he lay her down “Stay with me.” he begged as he tore through her shirt. The bullet wound entered cleanly beneath her sternum, there was no exit wound.
“Bucky…” she mumbled, Kit pressed a dressing up against the wound. “Kit… get him… get Bucky…please.” one weak arm rose up to push him away.
“He’ll be fine, you won’t,” he cried.
“Please Kit, I need him.” her breath rattled. Kit stared at her for a moment. Her body went limp in his arms. Her eyes fluttering closed
“Pilot get us to a hospital. Now.” He cried.

Chapter 15
Bucky made to dash forward but Sam’s grip on his shoulder made him halt.
“Let him.” Sam said.
Kit was at Nancy’s side in a moment Lifting her to her feet with one arm round her waist. He unlatched the door to the cockpit and helped her onto the Princess Lynette. Bringing her gently below deck he lay her on his sofa. The boat had been Kit’s home for years, yet he’d never let anyone else on board. He kept the curtains shut so the cabin was in permanent gloom, there were no pictures, no personnel items, anyone could have lived there. In truth the boat hadn’t changed much since he’d brought it from the previous owner. Nancy seemed to notice this as she took in her surroundings. Her eyelids fluttering as she steadied her erratic breathing.
“You’re alive?” She posed it as a question, still not sure if he was really there or not.
“Yes.”
“You’re alive.” She cried this time, all the emotion from the past 7 years spilling out of her. She slapped him in the chest as he leaned over her. “You’re alive, you let me think you were dead!” He fell to the floor next to her. “I buried you, I mourned you, and you’ve been here, this whole time.”
“Not the whole time…” he started.
“Oh, now I feel better.” her voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Nancy I’m sorry.” Kit pleaded.
“Half the world disappeared you still let me think you were dead.” She carried on, ignoring him.
“Nancy…”
“I almost died!” She exclaimed.
“I know…”
“Everyone came back, and I still hoped you’d be one of them, but you were and I… wait, you knew. How did you know?” She shouted sitting up.
“I… um… I…” he stuttered.
“Who told you?” Her face turned to stone.
“Mum did.” He admitted.
“Mum knew!” She was shouting again. Kit winced at the rise in volume.
“Nancy please, let me explain.” Kit begged.
“Be quick about it.” Nancy warned.
“I had to get away, it was safer for you, mum helped me, and I couldn’t go back after that. There’s been people looking for me the whole time., as soon as I knew they were looking for you I sent Helmut a message, he sent out some feelers to get the Wakandan’s attention, and I knew if you found out any trails would lead to him. In the meantime, you’d be safe with Dad.”
“But Dad didn’t know.” Nancy didn’t think she could bare having been lied to by both her parents. Her mother may be one for deception, but her dad never had been.
“No.”
“You know they broke up?” Her eyebrows shooting up in accusation.
“Yes, but I don’t think I can take all the blame for that.”
“I do.”
“Don’t be a child.” He snapped back.
“Oh really, you don’t think hiding that their dead son was really alive might have put a strain on their relationship.” She said standing up.
“Nancy please…” he tried coming towards her, but she tried to hold him back with a palm to the chest. At least that’s what she’d meant to do. The force of her hand sent him tumbling across the boat. It rocked and swayed and all the blood left Kit’s face.
“What have you done!” He was on his feet again and in front of her in a blink of an eye. Nancy swallowed.
“It’s nothing, it’s okay.” She insisted, turning from him.
“Nancy what’s happened?” He looked her up and down.
“It’s complicated…” she was cut off by Bucky bursting in from the cockpit. He darted to her side. Despite her surprise she found his presence soothing.
“Who are y…” Kit started as Bucky Span to face him. “You!” He pounced on him in an instant. His strength caught Bucky off guard for a moment and Kit flung him against the steps he’d just come down. His hand clapped round his throat, his knee pressing into his chest. Bucky attempted to push him off while Nancy screamed for Kit to stop. She tugged at his shoulder until he loosened his grip.
“What is it with your family and my neck?” Bucky choked out rubbing his throat.
“You don’t talk to her.”
“Are you okay? I heard shouting and the boat was tipping.” He ignored Kit and reached for her hand. She nodded silently. Kit was speechless looking between the two of them.
“You don’t get to decide who I talk to. You know who he is and what we are. Nothing you do will change that.”
“Nancy he’s a killer.” He pleaded.
“No.” She shook her head. “I’m not going through this again. You lost the right to question my decisions when you abandoned me.” Bucky was staring him down and Nancy could tell it was getting to her brother.
“Tell me what you did to her.” Kit shouted pointing at the super solider.
“He did nothing, it’s just a side effect, the bond between us, I can’t control it.” Nancy insisted.
“No one can know about this Nancy.” Kit grabbed at her desperately, “no one.”
“Kit what’s going on?” Nancy pleaded. Suddenly Sam appeared from the top deck.
“Guys you really need to keep it down, I can hear you from out there.” He announced and Kit spun round
“Who this?” He was shaking now.
“Calm down he’s with us.” Nancy insisted.
“Alright, all of you get down here and stay, we can’t discuss this here.” Kit darted up the steps to the cockpit, moments later the boat came to life. The engine purring beneath their feet. As the boat lurched forward Nancy felt herself fall back onto the sofa. Bucky sat next to her clasping her hand.
“Are we being kidnapped?” Sam asked peeping out of the curtains as they pulled away from the pontoon. Nancy made her way up to the cockpit, but Kit frantically gestured for her to stay down as he steered them out of the harbour.
“What’s going on?” She called over the engine.
“Not here, Nancy!” He snapped back. She retreated and the trio sat, waiting.
They didn’t have to wait very long, the boat moved with surprising speed and kit had them anchored offshore within the hour. Meanwhile the trio stayed below deck, Sam and Bucky bickered. Nancy managed to tune most of it out, Bucky insisting Sam shouldn’t complain as he liked boats and Sam retorting that Bucky shouldn’t have interrupted a siblings argument. Thoughts were swimming around Nancy’s head. She leaned back resting her head on top of the sofa, staring up at the ceiling. Nancy barely noticed the engine shutting off when Bucky squeezed her had lightly. Kit had reopened the door to the cockpit and called them up to the top deck. The sun beat down on them as the four gathered at the exposed bow of the boat They were anchored in a secluded mooring spot, there were no boats as far as the eye could see. Kit looked around their surroundings before he started talking.
“If Nancy’s got enhanced abilities she’s at risk, I know about Duncan Everett but whatever his motives are these people he’s working with, well, they are only interested in one thing.” He explained.
“What is it they’re interested in?” Sam asked crossing his arms across his chest. Kit looked between his three companions.
“Super humans.” He responded simply. Bucky clenched his fists. “People like us, they keep trying to recreate he original serum,”
“They want to create another Steve?” Bucky asked.
“Not exactly,” Kit turned round looking out to the sea, “They want to create another you.”
“What!” Nancy burst out.
“The Winter Solider I mean,” He turned back to look him in the eye. “I’ve read your file, the brain washing, the assassinations, you were highly effective. Certain persons are trying to recreate that.”
“And you’re a candidate for that?” Nancy asked, her heart dropping.
“Absolutely, and if they find out you have these abilities as well then so will you.” As Kit said this Bucky reached out instinctively, pulling Nancy tight to his side.
“No one’s going to take her.” he said simply to no one in particular, as if he was stating out for the universe to know.
“Agreed.” Kit said.
“Do you know who these people are?” Sam asked.
“They’re everywhere, a global organisation.”
“Hydra?” Sam guessed.
“It’s a possibility.” Kit agreed.
“So, you’ve been hiding from them, all this time?” Nancy’s voice was quiet and cracked.
“Yeah, I don’t expect you to forgive me, but can you understand that?” Kits eyes were watering as Nancy nodded, pushing past Bucky to pull her brother into a tight hug. His arms closed round her. He hadn’t hugged anyone since his fake death and notion caused tears to run down his cheeks. For a moment she was a little girl again and he was her big brother, comforting her in a thunderstorm.
“For the record I’m not letting anyone take you either.” Nancy said defiantly. Kit squeezed her tight again.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back at the harbour three woman circled the spot where the Princess Lynette was supposed to be moored. The tracking device’s trail had gone cold.
“Trails dead in the water. The boats gone. Call it in, we need people up and down the coast, they’ll have to come back to dry land eventually.” One of the woman called to the another whilst the third brought out a small cube holding it up to her eye like a telescope.
“No sign.” The third woman said as the second pulled a phone out of her pocket.
“Well, I think Everett is as useful as he’ll ever be.” The first woman mused. “Have that sorted as well.” She barked the order at the second woman, she froze briefly before nodding.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“They’ll be following us, they’d have followed you here.” Kit looked out to sea again with a sigh. “I’m going to miss this place.”
“Maybe its time to stop running?” Nancy joined him at the boat’s railing. “you also need to tell dad about all of this.” she gestured to him, the boat and it’s fishing equipment.
“I know.”
“And you need to shave.” she laughed poking him in the cheek.
“Guys I hate to break up this reunion, but you were right, they have followed us.” Sam showed them a live feed on his phone, footage from redwing, three hooded figures surrounded Kit’s mooring.
“The Witches.” He explained, then, on seeing the confused expressions on the other’s faces, clarified. “Not actual witches, just a nickname, I ran into them once when I was in Peru, seems they haven’t given up the chase.”
“and they work for possibly Hydra?” Sam asked.
“Yeah.” Kit agreed.
“Well, we should probably get ready then.” Nancy said, standing up tall looking braver than she felt.
“Nancy no.” Kit ordered. Bucky laughed.
“If that works you’ve got to tell me how you do it.”
“Ha ha, it doesn’t work.” Nancy said making her way back below where her suit sat folded neatly next to Bucky’s single sleeved jacket in his rucksack.

“Bucky…” she started again, Bucky held up a hand to stop her
“Don’t, please Nancy don’t.” He shook his head.”
“I am sorry though Buck.”
“Don’t be, god Nancy, I flipped in there, seeing you there, with him trying to get into your head, I couldn’t bare it.”
“You’re angry at yourself?” She asked
“You had to threaten yourself to get me to stand down.” He grabbed her, pulling her face to his. “How could I let that happen.” Nancy twisted in his grip, pressing her lips to the pulse point on his wrist. His pained expression softened slightly.
“Bucky, we got what we needed. Okay, you know what he was doing in there, you let this get between us and he wins okay. Look at me, look at us, we’re okay. We know where Kit is, the mission is complete.” Bucky met her eyes then, aquamarine bore into emerald. A shiver ran through them both and they sprung apart.
“You felt that?” He whispered, Nancy nodded. He slid his hand across to hers. The feeling was gone but Nancy felt the familiar joy of his presence.
“A soulmate thing I guess?” She responded.
“I think this thing goes deeper than either of us expected.” Bucky twirled a strand of hair through his fingers. “Shuri’s probably got some theory’s on it.”
“Maybe we should try and find out more.” She agreed.
“Yeah, probably. Do you have any idea how happy I was when I saw you looking back at me all those months ago? I knew I wasn’t alone anymore. Everything I’ve been through, the things I’ve seen, meeting you, made it seem like there was a point to it. Getting to know you, I think it was worth it.” Bucky declared.
“Bucky…” Nancy croaked. She knew what he’d told her about his past but also knew there was much more he hadn’t told her.
“Wait. I can’t give you a normal life, I want to because you deserve to be safe and secure, but trouble seems to follow me. I can only promise that I was always try to protect you from it.” He looked like he might cry navy reached her hand round to sweep across his cheek.
“Please, let me speak.” she started, steadying her voice. “I felt the same, when I found you I felt complete, I loved you from the first moments I spent with you, I can’t have a life without you, when Helmut said I was my brothers biggest weakness, I realised you’re mine, and then I hurt you, don’t say I didn’t because I saw it in your eyes. We stand together, I set us apart it was unforgivable.”
“There’s nothing you could do that I wouldn’t forgive.” He insisted, his vibranium hand against hers on his cheek. Nancy smiled, her whole face lighting up.
“And for the record, trouble seems to find me just fine, and who wants a normal life, any life with you would be extraordinary.”
“Nancy, we might not get the big house in the country, I might not get to give you the kind of life you’re used to. I don’t work nine to five, I haven’t got a credit score or a pension plan, we might not get a puppy or have some kids…”
“Oh no we will have kids,” Nancy cut him off with a laugh, shaking her head.
“How are you so certain.” Bucky smiled back.
“Because I’m as stubborn as I am beautiful, because i think you want kids, and so do I, because our life will be different, but I’ll be damned if it’s not exactly the life we both want.” She let up kissing his forehead and both his cheeks.
“Are you sure?” He pressed his forehead into hers.
“Absolutely, you don’t need a pension, or a credit score and I don’t care where we live, New York, London, Timbuktu for all I care. I have money, I know it can’t buy me those moments in our future.” She exclaimed. She looked briefly round the cabin. “Where’d you suppose Sam got to?”
“I think he’s giving us a moment.” Bucky chuckled, tilt her chin to press his lips against hers, she chuckled into it, running her fingers through his hair.
“You think a lot about our future,” he asked, kissing along her jawline.
“Yes.” She blushed slightly, biting her lip.
“Tell me.” Both hands were in her hair now, moving against her scalp as her head tilted back, giving him access to her neck.
“Okay,” She breathed in heavily, closing her eyes. “so, I think we’ll have a little place somewhere, not too busy, nice and secluded, you can go off on your missions and know there’s a safe place to come home to. We can have kids, they’ll get under our feet when we put up the Christmas decorations, they’ll sneak out of bed to see you when you come home late. A little boy with your big blue eyes, a little girl dusted in my freckles. We can have Sam round for barbecues…” Nancy was cut off by Bucky sitting back up straight.
“Don’t talk about Sam right now.” He laughed.
“So nice little place, couple of kids, what will you be doing? I cannot picture you as the doting housewife.” He tapped her nose playfully.
“Maybe I’ll be heading out next to you,” His face filled with horror, she laughed again and his face relaxed, “or I’ll finally put that degree I got to good use, start writing again.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They arrived in Cornwall under cover of night. The trio trudged sleepily across the field and made their way to a cosy Clift top B&B. The elderly lady on the desk showed them up to two rooms. Bucky and Nancy settled into their nightly routine, he lay with his arms wrapped around her as she traced the gold detailing in his left arm.
“I think Sam’s idea is good, we’ll start at the docks tomorrow, work our way down the coast from there.” Bucky said, Nancy nodded sleepily. “Sorry, were you trying to sleep?”
“No no, it’s okay, keep talking, your voice is soothing.” She smiled, snuggling deeper into his embrace.
“Okay, different topic, tell me about Thomas Gregory.” He whispered in her ear. She laughed loudly, turning round to face him.
“He was Kit’s best friend, so he was a little older, I was 11 and thought he was perfect. He was actually an arsehole. But I fancied he was my soulmate. Kit used to tease me constantly about him, why’d you ask, feeling jealous?” She asked giggling.
“No, I was merely curious.” He insisted.
“Sure sure, I do think you’re right about Sam’s plan. If he is using Thomas’s name then we can look for that. If he’s using a different alias maybe I’ll recognise it. Helmut did think he wanted me to find him. Also, if he has taken the serum maybe some locals have noticed a local fisherman with super strength.”
“You think he’s become a fisherman?” Bucky said, surprised.
“Well, I was thinking, he loves to be at sea, the navy is out of the question and if he is wanting me to find him, he’d have to stay local. Cornwall is known for its’ roaring fishing trade.”
“I wouldn’t know, but it’s a good place to begin,”
“So, we’ll do this undercover, no stars, no stripes and no metal arm.” Her eyes pleaded with him.
“I packed my gloves.” He waved the vibranium at her. She smiled as the soft light from the bedside lamp reflected off it. A yawn came over her and Bucky reached back to switch off the light. Nancy turned again, her back now pressed back against Bucky’s chest. Sleep fell over them both.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They headed out to the coast at dawn. The early morning sun beating down on them. Chatted cheerfully on along the way, he seemed to have lost his hostility from the day before. The first village they came across turned out to be a tourist hotspot, Nancy managed to hire them a car. The first harbour they found didn’t recognise the name Thomas Gregory or the picture Nancy brought up of Kit on her phone. The second harbour told the same story but once they reached the third harbour they had some hope.
“I think I might’ve seen him round here before, tall fellow,” The harbour master explained. Nancy nodded eagerly. “I think he usually mores over the ridge, wait here a moment.” The man jogged back to his portacabin and returned with a clipboard. “Here it is, Greg Thomas, stayed here a few months back, just the one night, the boat you’re looking for is the Princess Lynnette.” He smiled cheerfully at them. Nancy froze but the man didn’t notice as Sam thanked him whilst he walked away.
“You okay there?” Sam asked tapping her shoulder, “it’s good news, he might not be far.”
“He named his boat after me.” She whispered. Bucky smiled but Sam looked confused.
“Princess Lynnette?”
“Lynnette is my middle name.” Nancy explained, fondling the car keys before nodding to herself and marching back to the car. She slipped behind the driver’s seat and started the engine. Kit was close, she could almost feel it, as they drove over the ridge a large cove came into view. The harbour was a rush with activity as the boats came in from their morning runs. They pulled into a nearby car park and entered the throng of people. With everyone so busy they had to do without help finding the boat. They flittered in and out of crowds and up and down the jetty. Just when Nancy was losing hope she caught sight a surprisingly still boat at the end of one row. Every other boat had people rushing on and off loading and unloading goods. This one was silent, Nancy approached it slowly, and there were the words, Princess Lynnette, printed in blue along the side of a modestly sized fishing boat. It had curtains drawn across the window. She reached up to knock tentatively on the window. There was no response. Bucky came up and wrapped an arm round her shoulder.
“It’s his, it has to be.” She felt tears pricking at her eyes.
“We’ll give you a minute.” Bucky nodded at Sam who was admiring the docks comings and goings. They walked a little way away as Nancy stared at the boat, waiting for the curtain to twitch or the boat to rock. It just kept bobbing gently. She knocked again, harder this time, the again and again.
“Can I help you?” A voice sounded from behind her. Nancy span on one heel, her hair flying around as she did, getting whipped up in the wind.
“Nancy.” Kit was standing there, the same but different. He seemed bigger, he’d grown out his hair and was sporting a beard, his skin tanned more than it had been before. He looked different, but he was still, unmistakably, her big brother, he really was alive.
“Kit.” She said, breathless as her legs gave out under her.

---------------------------------------------------
Chapter 13
Shuri agreed to keep the prison safe whilst Sam, Bucky and Nancy headed for the raft. The US Marshalls could hardly say no to Captain America although they weren’t very happy about a British civilian going along as well. Torres had been sent back to America, no more unsanctioned missions for him. Shuri lent them a jet and a pilot. Before the left the princess had pulled Nancy to one side.
“I know he is your cousin, but he is a bad man. You should know it is only because of his excellent service and separation from your mother that has kept the Wakandan people happy for your father to remain here. You cannot trust this man.”
“Believe me I know, I know what he did to your father. I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you, it’s something my family has tried very hard to forget.” Nancy responded. Shuri had nodded to her in understanding, pressing a wrapped bundle of cloth into her arms.
“For the Red Wolf.” She said simply.
Her father had tears in his eyes as he said goodbye, “You find him, you bring back to me.” She had promised to, there was no point hiding her intentions anymore, they had a lead, nothing was going to stand in the way of finding her brother.
On board the plane Nancy sat with Shuri’s package cradled on her lap. Bucky sat beside her, tracing patterns lazily on the back of her hand. Sam sat on the other side of the jet, he kept watching Nancy out of the corner of his eye. Sam hadn’t said much to her since her revelation. Not that there’d been much time for chatting but still there was a chill in his presence that wasn’t there before.
“Stop staring Samuel.” Bucky snapped after a while and Sam’s eyes jumped up to meet his. Bucky’s eyebrows were raised, daring him to say something.
“I don’t like this James.”
“I didn’t choose to be related to him,”
“You didn’t tell us, how do we know we can trust you?” He appeared genuinely hurt by her omission. Nancy thought for a few moments.
“I just want to find my brother, you don’t have to trust me, but can you at least believe that.” Sam looked away from her then, silent acceptance.
“I’ll talk to him.” Bucky whispered kissing her temple.
“I don’t think anyone’s ever had my back so much before.” Nancy remarked
“It’s you and me doll, we stand together.” He winked at her, and Nancy felt warmth spreading through her as she beamed uncontrollably back at him. “You gonna show me what’s in there?” Bucky asked gesturing to the bundle. Nancy looked at it carefully. She’d mention it as a throw away comment, a joke during training, she didn’t think Shuri would actually come through with it. She peeled back the layers of cloth to reveal the garment beneath. Black and deep red panelling made up the trousers, top and jacket. Red gloves and boots were tucked into the bottom of the bundle as well as a brief note.
“Flame retardant, knife resistant and a lightweight breathable material. Or so Shuri says, I’m amazed she got it made so fast.” Nancy said, running her fingers over her suit. The belt boasted two knife holsters and a pouch of metallic ball bearings. After Nancy insisted on not carrying a gun Shuri had got creative, when activated by the device built into the sleeve, the balls would give off an electrical charge. Not enough to kill, but enough to knock someone down. An extra two knives were stowed away in the jacket’s lining and the backs of the gloves had reinforced panels of vibranium.
“I like it.” Bucky said once she’d got back from the tiny cubicle the jet called a toilet, now clad in the ensemble.
“Fits like a glove,” she smithed the material out before a brief jolt of turbulence knocked her back into her seat. Bucky’s arms reached out instinctively to catch her, but she caught herself, sliding back into the seat gently. Turbulence seemed to increase as they neared the raft. Nancy became more agitated which didn’t go unnoticed by her companions. For the first time she had to accept what her brother working with Helmut could mean. Did their views align? If so why had he taken the serum? Had he betrayed his country? Her brother who swore to fight for queen and country. The main question burned through them all though, where was he?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They reached the raft as were led through many security gates to a round room of cells. Zemo stood behind glass, he stared passively as the trio entered the room. No hint of surprise at the presence of Nancy.
“I wondered when I’d be graced with your presence dearest cousin. Family really is everything, wouldn’t you agree?”
“You’re nothing to me.” Nancy responded with narrowed eyes as she stalked round the edge of the room, each step bringing her closer to the glass.
“Don’t think I don’t know why you are here little one.” He smiled at her beckoning her towards him. She complied, briefly looking back to nod at Bucky first.
“Where is Kit?” She asked, staring him down.
“All in good time. I see you found him, I did used to wonder if you ever would.” Bucky made to move forward but Nancy waved him back.
“You knew?” She looked calm, inside she was screaming at him.
“You think your parents didn’t know, you think your mother wouldn’t have talked to mine. My parents were soulmates, your mother wanted to be certain. I heard things, not till later did I find out the metal armed man was him, I mean how many men like him are there.” He wagged his eyebrows in Bucky’s direction.
“Only one.” Nancy’s face turned to marble, she let the music rise up, calming her. “Tell me about Kit, we know he isn’t dead, we know you were working together, we know he took the serum. Where is he?”
“Is that all you want to know, don’t you want to know why? What if your precious brother doesn’t deserve to be found?”
“You want to tell me a story Helmut? Tell me a story, but it better end with where he is, or so help me god.”
“Your soldier won’t kill me, it’s not who he is anymore.” He smiled. Nancy Brought her face up to meet his against the glass.
“But I will.” She said it with a confidence she didn’t possess.
“Christopher worked for me, I knew about the British programme, I knew he’d be an ideal candidate, so I approached him, he wasn’t hard to convince, his weakness was glaringly obvious.”
“What weakness?” Nancy hated to ask.
“You my dear. His precious baby sister who he wanted to protect from the world. Little did he know the one he needed to protect you from was waiting in a mirror. Telling him that got him on side pretty quick. Who would want a monster dating their little sister?” Anger began to boil up inside Nancy’s head, drowning out her music.
“You Bastard!”
“Now come on, language, you were raised better than that.” he scolded with a frown before continuing “So, I told him, to protect you from the infamous winter solider he’d need to level the playing field. Then it was a simple task of tracking him to the classified location and shutting the place down. Him taking the serum was an unfortunate side effect, I underestimated their progress, but I’ve set the programme back many years now.”
“So, Kit didn’t betray them?”
“Well, no technically not, my people had him removed, sadly he escaped my custody, and by that point I had bigger fish to fry.” he nodded at Sam and Bucky. “I made my peace with that. He knows you’re looking for him though, sent me a letter some weeks ago, instructions on where you could find him.”
“What instructions were they?” she demanded, her fingers lightly grazed the blade at her waist.
“I’ll tell you, if you promise me a favour in return.” He whispered to her. There was a rush of movement and Bucky was behind her, gun drawn, pointing it at the glass. Sam stood behind him, hand on his shoulder, as if to hold him back.
“No!” Nancy whipped round, brandishing her blade at Bucky her eyes pleading for him to back down, one wrong move and Kit could be lost to her.
“You can’t trust him.”
“He’s the only chance.” She insisted. Bucky smiled sadly.
“You won’t hurt me doll.”
“No, I won’t.” She realised, she turned the knife in her hand before bringing it to her throat. “And you won’t hurt me.” Bucky dropped the gun instantaneously. His face filled with pain and Nancy lowered the blade, her own face painted with regret.
“Alright calm down.” Sam said standing between the two of them, Zemo had moved to sit on the edge of his bunk.
“Really very touching.” He looked at the three of them.
“What’s the favour?” She spat back at him. Something softened behind his eyes as he looked at her. He took a deep breath.
“Lay some flowers for me, at the memorial, In Sokovia.” Nancy, taken aback, nodded slowly. “Does the name Thomas Gregory mean anything to you?” His eyes darted to the cameras above them and then back again. Understanding Nancy nodded.
“Yes,”
“That’ll be a place to start.” He picked a book off his pillow waving it at her. She saw the title, Moby Dick. “You know, some people think the ending is the best part, I tend to prefer beginnings.”
Sam and Bucky both looked confused, but Nancy understood.
“Thank you, Helmut, I won’t forget this.” She turned her back and made to walk back to the door.
“Nancy,” he called out to her. She turned her head quickly. “White roses were her favourite, she might not have been my soulmate, but at the same time she was.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They received many odd looks from the raft’s personnel as they made their way back to the jet. Bucky seemed to be constantly staring at her and for the first time she felt discomfort under his gaze.
“Buck…” was all she managed to get out once they were seated once more in the plane, before Sam started asking questions.
“Who is Thomas Gregory?” he started.
“He’s no one, it was a code, one he knew only I would be able to decipher. He wants it to be me that finds him. If Helmut knows where he is, he doesn’t want those watching him to know that. Which means Duncan Everett is the only one trying to find him.”
“Do you know where he is?”
“I’ve got an idea. Thomas Gregory was a friend of his, the first boy I ever thought I loved actually,” Nancy noticed Bucky tense up by her side, but she ignored it. “Kit knew I’d remember him. Really a cruel joke. They had been friends for ages, but his family was actually from Cornwall originally.”
“Prefers the beginning.” Bucky muttered, Nancy nodded up at him with a grateful smile. He, at least, was following.
“Moby Dick was a clue too I think. Kit loved the sea, he read that book for school once, he was obsessed with it. He’s got to be working the coast.” She pieced it together in her mind. He knew how to crew the greatest naval vessels, it makes sense for his cover to be working on the boats.
“In Cornwall.” Sam clarified.
“yes, I believe so.”
“Then we’ll head there, we’ll find him.” Bucky said, looking to Sam for any hint of protest.
“We’ve come this far.” Sam decided, rising up to let their pilot know the new course. he looked back briefly at Bucky who nodded. Then it was just Nancy and Bucky sat side by side, yet miles apart.

Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11
----------------------------------------------------
Chapter 12
They woke up curled together the next morning. Their foreheads were pressed together, his left arm snaked round her wait whilst his right was tucked up supporting his head, he hummed softly playing with her loose hair. She looked into his eyes, adoration flooding through her.
“I know I have never said it, but I love you.” Nancy whispered. A smile spread across his lips and a blush rose to his cheeks.
“I thought that was because it didn’t need saying, I love you too.” He kissed her firmly on the lips. She smiled into it before rolling away and out of the bed.
“Come on sergeant, we’ve got work to do.” She ordered.
“Yes ma’am.” He answered.
They got up and ready quickly and without incident. Nancy pulled on her dress from the night before and Bucky slipped into his jacket, the left sleeve missing, flexing his vibranium arm. They made their way to the palace once more, meeting Sam at the door. They were led to the main hall where Duncan Everett was already sat bound by a brightly lit device to the floor. A force field surrounded him as well. He has wearing the same clothes as the night before minus the black coat and appeared tired and fed up. Shuri was sat casually in a chair, her legs swung over one of the arms. She smiled as they entered gesturing to some other seats that were laid out.
“Lieutenant Everett if I’m correct?” Shuri started taking the lead in the interrogation.
“I don’t go by that rank anymore.” He answered quickly with a scowl
“Well, no I suppose you wouldn’t, seeing as you’re legally dead.” Nancy snapped back.
“touché.” He smirked.
“What is it you want with Martin Cartwright?” Shuri asked firmly.
“Absolutely nothing.” He dragged his eyes away from Nancy to look directly at Shuri. She frowned in response.
“What’s all this been about then?” She stood up approaching the forcefield.
“I don’t want anything from Matin Cartwright. I’m after her.” He pointed straight at Nancy. Bucky drew himself up to stand in front of her.
“Well you can’t have her.” he shouted, anger rising inside.
“Oh, believe me it’s not like that big guy.” He shook his head laughing.
“Then what is it like?” Sam asked. Duncan looked around the room weighing up his options.
“I’m trying to smoke out a rat, just needed some decent bait.” He leered at her.
“Who, who’s the rat?” Nancy faltered.
“I think you already know that. Christopher Cartwright.” He stated confidently.
“Christopher Cartwright is dead.” Bucky snapped back
“So am I, legally.” He smiled
“So, it’s true, Kit is alive.” Nancy said standing up to step infant of Bucky.
“Most defiantly.” The prisoners voice filled with venom.
“Explain.” Sam said. All of them now on their feet. Duncan looked between them, realising he was outnumbered and alone, he told them everything.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
America had their Captain, Britain wanted their own. The super soldier serum was lost but the military took on the greater scientific minds in the country to develop their own. The hired on the brightest and best test subjects from across the Army, Navy and Air Force. Duncan Everett was one such subject. He was the brightest and best, young, fit and healthy. Three years in the British army, he held a great sense of patriotism. It was the greatest honour to be selected. It was there that he’d met Lieutenant Commander Cartwright of the Royal Navy. He led their group, always first to volunteer, always encouraging, always up for a laugh. They’d all loved him. He was the first to take the serum, he was the natural choice, Duncan was happy to wait his turn. Until Christopher betrayed them all. Destroying the test samples and running off into the night. The scientists were found dead in the morning and the programme was shut down. After that the government wanted to forget the venture and wipe the slate clean. The test subjects were placed in witness protection for their safety. A fake training exercise was enough to stage their deaths and the country was none the wiser.
Witness protection hadn’t suited him or his comrades. If bringing in the only successful recipient of the new serum could restart the programme, then that is what they’d do. It wasn’t hard to find supporters, many criminal organisations were interested in possessing an enhanced human. What moral implications could there be for Duncan, he would simply had all his benefactors over to the police once they were brought back into the military. Tracking down Christopher Cartwright had turned out to be more difficult than he predicted. He was a man of great means, Duncan suspected he could be hiding anywhere.
Then he remembered the sister. The letters Cristopher had written but never sent, always to the same woman, the picture of the girl with the long dark hair laughing next to him that he’d kept in his wallet. Nancy Cartwright, the sister he’d felt guilty for abandoning, at least that is what Duncan had managed to infer from their conversations. She was nothing special, a London socialite, daughter of a diplomat overseas. Getting close was to her proved to be more difficult, her home was too secure to think about a break in, she rarely ventured out alone and when she did it was to no readable pattern. Then came her invitation to the ballet, they’d been intercepting her communications, alone in a box with an easily compromised politician. Duncan had sent in his men, only to be foiled by two of the avengers. He’d gone in to get her himself, played his trump card to no avail, then been picked off the ground like a door mouse being hunted by a bird. Duncan then retreated to regroup in Amsterdam.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Why would Kit betray you?” Nancy said forcing back the tears in her eyes. Kit was alive, it was the only thought in her mind, her singular purpose was finding him.
“I was going to ask you that. I don’t believe he was working alone. You got any ideas who he was working with?” Duncan smirked knowingly at her.
Nancy’s heart sank in her chest, she felt like she might feint or throw up. Bucky caught her as she stumbled, she couldn’t meet his gaze though. She shook off his grip and, though it took all her remaining strength, she marched from the room.
“Think I touched a nerve?” Duncan asked the room.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nancy walked for a while before her legs sent her to the training room. She found the targets set up like they had been the day before. She breathed deeply handling the knives laid out for practice. She picked one up, testing its weight gently before launching it towards the target with a scream. It missed rebounding off the forcefield and falling to the ground. she picked up two more throwing them with the same result. She let the tears fall, felt the walls collapsing in on her. knife after knife she threw until one bounced badly on the forcefield and came flying back at to her ear. A hand shot out and grabbed it, it took Nancy a moment to realise it was her own. She stared at it in surprise, taking a deep breath she could almost hear the music in her head, she threw it back and it hit home, dead centre. Her toes curled as she found adrenalin coursing its way through her. She jumped on the spot before picking up the fallen knives. she returned to her spot, the music filling her head again as she threw the knives in quick succession, each hitting, forming a ring around the centre. She heard a clapping coming from behind her, she whipped round to find Bucky stood leaning against the door frame, his face carved from stone and unreadable.
“Bucky…”
“What’s going on Nance, what was that in there?” he walked over to her, his thumb rubbed a stray tear off her cheek. she shook her head turning away from him.
“He’s so bloody smug, like he’s proud of himself, like this is some sort of game, well it’s not, it’s my life and it’s my family, it’s my brother.” she said pulling the knives from the target, “Well you know what, no one messes with my family,” Buck nodded agreeing with her.
“What did he mean, about Kit having help, he seemed to say it for your benefit.” he asked grabbing her hand.
“Bucky don’t push this,” he let go automatically, his brow creasing.
“Nancy please, you’re shaking.” She hadn’t noticed till he told her.
“There are things I haven’t told you, about my family, people we don’t talk about, and I should have told you, but I couldn’t. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.” She fell to the floor at his feet, he slid down to join her.
“Whatever it is, it’ll be okay, you can tell me.” Bucky insisted. She was quiet for a while, Bucky could almost hear the cogs turning in her head.
“My mother is Sokovien by birth,” she stuttered out. “Her maiden name was Zemo, her father was Petrov Zemo, her older brother was Machev Zemo and her nephew…”
“Helmut Zemo.” Bucky finished for her. Nancy looked away, nodding.
“I only met him twice, my mother didn’t agree with their criminal dalliances, so she lived a very separate life after she married. He came to England once with his mother, they stayed with us, he was older, a moody teenager at the time.” She chanced a glance at him, still he appeared unreadable.
“And the second time?” he said.
“My grandfather’s funeral.” She said finally meeting his eyes.
“And Kit, did he know him any better?” Bucky asked, encouraging her to continue.
“Not that I knew, but who else could he know who hates the very idea of super soldiers enough to kill those who made a serum?” He agreed with her there.
“Nancy,” he placed his palm against her cheek. “thank you for telling me.”
“You don’t hate me?”
“I couldn’t hate you if I tried.” he sealed his words with a kiss to her cheek. As he stood up he brough her to her feet as well. He linked their fingers together after taking the knives from her hand. “That was impressive.” he nodded towards the target. “Seems like Shuri’s theory was correct.” Nancy nodded, leaning her head against his shoulder. “We don’t choose who we’re related to Nancy.”
They left the training room together and walked together, they walked through the city in silence, Bucky’s thumb drawing patterns across her knuckles. He planted kisses on her head at seemingly random intervals. As they got to the city’s outskirt Nancy figured out where he was leading her, down to the lake again. The sun was high in the sky this time lighting up the water. Nancy’s forehead was shiny with sweat and her feet ached from the walk. Despite this she felt calmer hearing the gentle lapping of the water. They stood together breathing in the fresh air.
“I suppose I’ll have a fair bit of explaining to do when we get back.” Nancy said, breaking the silence and turning to face her soulmate. He stared at her, taking in the way the light set fire to her hair and how her eyes seemed to glow green and gold.
“You don’t have to explain anything if you don’t want to. But I think you know what we are going to have to do next.” his eyes squinted against the sun whilst his hands sat on his hips.
“Yeah, time for a family reunion.”
“You don’t have to come, me and Sam can do this ourselves, report back to you.” Bucky tried.
“No, I have to do this, I have to come with you.” Bucky knew better than to argue. He brought his arms around her looking down into her eyes.
They’d speak with Shuri later and arrange a visit to The Raft.

Chapter 11
Nancy was standing in the training room, more music playing in her ears, Ayo stood before her, spear in hand. Shuri, as usual, was standing in the corner with her tablet.
“This seems a dangerous test.” Ayo mused, twirling her spear. Nancy bit her lip. Her training had been going well. Over the past two days she found herself running faster and further, she could now successfully land moving targets and lift well above her own body weight. She still needed the music to calm herself, let her instincts take over but Shuri had decided it was time to put her training into practice. Who better to help than one of the Dora? Nancy had taken extensive self-defence classes as a child and teenager, her and Kit had attended judo classes, and both reached black belt. Their mother had seen it as a necessary precaution. Nancy had enjoyed it significantly more than ballet classes. Standing in front of Ayo 8 years since her last class she felt frightfully unprepared.
“She’s got this.” Shuri insisted.
Ayo circled the girl slowly, like a lioness stalking her prey. Nancy calmed her breathing. Stretching out her neck and clenching and unclenching her fists. The spear whistling through the air. Nancy’s arm shot out blocking its path, but Ayo stopped it’s attack short anyway.
“Okay, so you are fast.” Ayo smiled. She struck the spear out again, Nancy blocked again. This continued Nancy blocking strikes from all angles whilst Ayo spiralled around her. The speed of her assaults increased until Nancy grabbed out snatched the spear. Ayo didn’t let go and when Nancy kicked her leg out Ayo caught it in the air. One leg in the air and one hand on the spear’s shaft. She drops the leg spinning on the other and wrenching the spear from Ayo’s grasp. She landed crouched on the ground gasping for breath.
“Never again wildcat,” Ayo smiled taking back the spear.
“Not a wildcat,” Shuri said, approaching Nancy with her hand held out, helping her up. “Red Wolf.” Nancy laughed under her breath as she and Shuri grinned.
“So, I guess your theory was right?” Nancy said removing the headphones.
“Well, you didn’t just learn that in two days. It’s built within you.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The revelation of Duncan Ellis had led to more questions than he answered, they now played a waiting game for Sam and Bucky to return with him. Nancy was fresh out of the shower after training wrapped in a towel when her phone went off.
‘Mirror?’
‘Yes.’ She sent back straight away, she pulled on sundress and sat in front of the bedroom mirror. A few moments later she could see Bucky staring back at her. The interior of the jet displayed behind him.
“Hey, we are a couple of hours out.” Nancy smiled at his news,
“Okay, has he said anything yet?”
“Not yet, but he will,”
“Good, i think there might be more to this then we first thought.” Between what Sam and Bucky had discovered in Amsterdam and Shuri and Nancy’s own research, Nancy’s hopes had steadily risen, could Kit be out there? And if he was another question rose in the back of her mind, why hadn’t he made contact?
“Bucky?” She said hesitantly, “there’s something I need to show you when you get back.” Nancy hadn’t told Bucky about the princess’s and her experiments. She hadn’t explained her newly discovered reflexes or ability to hit superhuman speeds if in the right mindset. Which mean she hadn’t told him how much easier dipping into that place was becoming, or how at home she felt there.
“You okay doll?” He said frowning with concern.
“I will be when you get here.”
She didn’t have to wait long, a couple of hours was nothing compared to the days they’d been apart, but still it felt like an age to Nancy who stared into the mirror long after Bucky had left its surface. She pinned her hair back off her face but let it fall loose in a waterfall down her back, she dug out her great grandmothers necklace, remembering Bucky’s appreciation for it, and fastened it round her neck. She looked down at the sundress she’d slipped into for modesty and frowned. She wanted to look strong when facing Duncan Everett, fierce and intimidating, the dress made her look like she was off to the beach. She reached into the wardrobe flicking through the clothing she’d had to purchase in Wakanda after realising she’d be staying more than 3 days. She pulled out the black and red dress Katima had insisted she get. It was smart and official looking with a V-neck and asymmetric hem. It hugged her hips and thighs though the material had some stretch to it. Slipping into it and a pair of black heels Nancy once again returned to the mirror. That was much better. She applied a thick coat of mascara and a deep red lipstick before leaving to find Shuri.
“Woah, that’s a look.” Shuri called out to Nancy as she crossed the threshold to the lab. Navy gave a small lack lustre twirl.
“Buck has his arm, Sam has his wings and shield, I’ve got this.” She gestured to the outfit.
“Well, I love it.” She grinned “and I think a certain sergeant will too.” She laughed wiggling her eyebrows.
It was dark by the time the call came through that the jet had crossed the border. Nancy made her way down to the landing pad. She set her face in stone ready to face Duncan. Bucky left the jet first, marching over to her and engulfing her in his arms. He kissed her briefly but firmly.
“I missed you.”
“So, you said.” Nancy smiled back, stroking the stubble on his chin. He kept an arm round her shoulders whilst turning back towards the jet. Sam was leading the dark-haired man down the ramp and towards the palace, his hands held tightly behind his back, as he passed the couple he winked at Nancy, smirking as he did. Bucky’s grip tightened on her shoulder.
“Let’s go in,” he whispered in her ear. They followed the prisoner into the palace where he was sealed in a cell. Bucky waited until he knew he was locked away before making for the door with Nancy still by his side.
The stepped into a side room, Shuri was sat at a table, Sam by her side. They took seat opposite.
“How should we play this?” Sam asked the room, “he said nothing the whole way here.”
“British intelligence has given us clearance to hold him, turns out they thought he was dead as well. We have got to extradite him back to face questioning there when we are done with him, I’d say we have a week.” Shuri explained.
“I say we let him stew, get back to him in the morning.” Bucky stretched out. “He’s not going anywhere tonight.”
“I have questions, I want the answers.” Nancy argued.
“I know you do, and we will get them, but tomorrow, I want to know what you two have been up to.” Bucky said gesturing between the two women. They shared a look and a knowing smile.
“We were testing the subconscious link we discussed.” Nancy started.
“And she’s being showing great progress.” Shuri finished. Bucky simply looked confused.
“Come to my training tomorrow and you’ll see.” Nancy said slyly.
“Ooo that’s an idea, I don’t think Ayo will want to volunteer again.” Shuri winked at Nancy.
Bucky looked at Sam who just shrugged in return. It seemed things were decided and, be it reluctantly, Nancy let Bucky pull her from the room. They made their way across the square but at the door to the embassy building Bucky kissed her quickly on the cheek.
“I’ll be right back with you, just forgot something,” He darted back towards the palace. Nancy made her way up to the apartment, she slipped off the heels leaving them by the door and padded across the carpet. She switched on the stereo and poured herself a glass of wine. She swayed softly to the music. Tomorrow she would get her answers and then she’d know, either way, what had happened to Kit. She wanted to tell her dad what they were investigating but it seemed cruel to get his hopes up for nothing, and then there was their mother. She had told her where she was and to stay safe just in case they came for her as well. As always her mother had worried, told her to come stay with her because she’d decided that was what was best for her. Nancy politely declined. The thought of staying with her controlling overprotective mother was bad enough without worrying about her meeting Bucky. Larissa Cartwright had worshipped the ground her son walked on, when he’d died Larissa had retreated into herself. Her marriage collapsing and alienating her daughter. Telling her she thought Kit might not have died would likely cause more harm than good. Whilst thinking this over she heard the door click open and then Bucky’s arms were round her, his lips at her ear.
“I like this.” he whispered playing with the strap of her dress. Nancy smiled turning round so they could sway together to the music.
“Thank you, its my battle armour,” she said smiling. Bucky nodded in agreement. He stroked a thumb across her lower lip,
“And this?” he asked regarding the lipstick there.
“My war paint.” she laughed. He laughed with her, the right side of his mouth twisting up. He dipped her gently and as she leaned back the ruby pendent glinted in the low lights. He smiled seeing it nestled beneath her collar bone. As she rose back up he caught her lips in a fierce kiss, swooping her up in his arms, bridal style.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nancy awoke to find Bucky’s side of the bed empty. Alarm raced through her instantly. She crept out of the bedroom, her robe wrapped around her tightly. She found him lying awake on the sofa, a blanket thrown over him. she slipped around the arm of the sofa wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
“What’s this in aid of?” she asked as he sat up turning around.
“Never again, I won’t risk hurting you again.” he said staring at her with wide eyes.
“Buck…” she started.
“No, I don’t care if I never sleep again, I won’t put you in danger.” he held both his hands up.
“We figured out what happened. Even if I do wake him again, I can call him off.” she argued, hands twisting in the t-shirt he was wearing.
“That’s only a theory, I don’t want to hurt you.”
“Well, I’m not going back to sleep until you join me.” She stood up, arms cross staring him down.
“You know you’re as stubborn- “
“As I am beautiful, I know, now come with me I’m tired and I’ve missed you.” She held out her hand with one eyebrow raised. He took it and let her pull him to his feet and back to the bedroom. Tucked up again, his arms wrapped around her, Bucky slipped reluctantly into sleep alongside her.

Chapter 9
--------------------------------------------------
Chapter 10
It was surprisingly simple tracking down the dark-haired man. Redwing managed to find CCTV footage showing the man entering and exiting the same river side apartment. Bucky and Sam had been hauled up monitoring the surveillance from a cheap B&B on the out skirts of the city for the past two days. Bucky lay reclined on his twin bed, gently tossing his knife in the air and catching it. He flipped the compact mirror open and shut. He’d spoken to Nancy earlier, she’d explained a theory Shuri had over the depth of their soulmate bond and how she’d managed to both summon and call off the Winter Solider. It made him feel uneasy, that without meaning to Nancy had managed to bring him out, if she did it once she might do it again.
Sam entered the room and sitting on the edge of the adjacent bed. He pulled the suitcase out from under it.
“It’s go time co-worker, he just left.” Sam looked over at him, he pulled out the Captain America suit. He’d been tailing the man himself, found he visited a local restaurant in the evenings. More CCTV footage found this to be a nightly occurrence. Therefore, they’d hatched a plan. “you good for this?” Sam called over to Bucky. He forced himself out of his reclined position, rubbing a hand over his face and through his hair.
“Yeah, let’s do this.” His attempt at enthusiasm was poor, he was tired, he hadn’t slept well since that night and he could feel the tiredness in his bones.
“Focus Buck, remember who we’re doing this for.” Bucky shot him an exasperated smile. “There he is, come on.”
They made their way through Amsterdam silently, hugging the shadows, as swamis of cyclists made their way through the early evening traffic. The apartment was in an old building with an ornate terrace. On the front there was a concierge, so Sam and Bucky made their way up to the balcony, Bucky slipped the lock on the door with his knife and they made their way inside. It was a modest size apartment, with modern furnishings and a plethora of screens and files adorning a large desk in the corner. Bucky made his way through the rooms, gun drawn, there was a small hallway off which the living room they’d entered through branched. There was also a small bathroom, a kitchenette and a bedroom with only a covered mattress on the floor. Bucky stared at the mattress for a moment, it reminded him of Bucharest. Deciding they were alone he circled back to the living room. Sam was running his hands across the files on the desk.
“What’s he got there?” Bucky asked over his shoulder.
“If you let me finish reading, I’ll let you know.” Sam held up a hand concentrating. Bucky clenched his jaw impatiently. A minute later he spoke again, “it’s all in here,” he held up one of the files. “Transcripts of some sort, ‘Cartwright will join us if we take the girl.’ This must have been the communication Katima and her team intercepted.” Bucky looked in the file he showed him, his stomach twisted, there was a picture of Nancy, she looked younger, slightly softer round the edges, her hair shorter but her smile just a stunning. She stood by her father’s side, her brother, in full uniform, stood tall next to her mother. Larissa Cartwright was tall like her children, with darker hair and long manicured fingernails. “There’s more, conversations describing her movements and activities. Timings for Swan Lake at the royal opera house.” Bucky felt rage burning inside him, anger boiling in his head. He breathed deeply, Sam noticed his shaking breath. “It’s alright, we’ll bring him in, he won’t get to her.”
“I swear to god, any of them lay a finger on her, I don’t think I’ll be responsible for my actions.” A voice inside him roared in agreement, sending a shiver down his spine.
“I swear to god, any of them lay a finger on her, I don’t think I’ll be responsible for my actions.” A voice inside him roared in agreement, sending a shiver down his spine.
Shortly after their search of the files the front door clicked. Bucky spun round instantly, finger pressed to his lips and gun drawn again. Sam raised his eyebrows at him, exasperated. The light came on before the man entered the room, as he did Bucky pinned him straight against the wall.
“Hello again.” Bucky said increasing his pressure on the man’s neck with his vibranium arm. Up close the man looked younger and smaller. He was wearing a long black trench coat, his skin once again seemed too high a contrast against his almost black hair. His jaw was clenched tight and he looked defiantly up at Bucky.
“Back off you bastard!” He spat back in Bucky’s face, pushing against him to no avail. Bucky kicked out the back of his knees and the man fell at his feet.
“Who are you?” Bucky demanded. He grabbed the file from Sam shoving it under the man’s nose. “What do you want with Martin Cartwright?”
———————————————————————————————
“Your brother was a very private person.” Shuri noted, scrolling through the feed on her screen, “No social media what so ever, no pictures of him on any of his friend’s pages no dating apps either.” Shuri looked quite disappointed.
“That kind of stuff just wasn’t important to him, and Kit didn’t really have any friends towards the end.” Nancy admitted. “He was quite obsessed with becoming the perfect solider, he cut everyone out, including me.” Nancy remembered the change well, his every breath was for queen and country, he came back only for fleeting visits, Nancy never saw him out of his naval uniform. Her and Shuri had been looking for days for any record of his final mission, though they had found nothing yet, in fact they had found no records for him after he moved units. They found no record of any unit like that which Kit had described. Shuri had moved onto scanning the wider web. They were yet to find anything there either.
“Did he ever mention anyone he worked with at this training unit?” The princess asked. Nancy wracked her brains, Kit had barely spoken to her in those last few months. One of her biggest regrets was not pushing him harder, not having something to remember as the last thing they’d spoken of.
“No, sorry I can’t be more helpful.”
“It’s alright, it’s just very suspicious. There’s nothing here, it’s like he stopped existing the moment he joined this unit.” Shuri suggested.
“What if we looked for others, umm, similarly qualified individuals, who might have been recruited to this unit, if Kit’s record at that point is missing maybe his isn’t the only one. If there were others maybe they weren’t so secretive.”
“Good thinking, I’m on it.” She started typing frantically, records appearing and disappearing on the screen. “This program should find records with those similarities.” They both watched the screen with bated breath.
The search took a couple of hours, Shuri suggested Nancy train some more whilst they waited. She tended to like Nancy to train multiple times a day, always being monitored. Sometimes Nancy would catch her frowning at the statistics on her tablet.
“I’ve had a new theory.” She said this time after a few minutes watching Nancy running on the treadmill.
“Yeah, tell me it doesn’t involve more running.” Nancy said, catching her breath as she walked over to Shuri. In her hand she held out a set of wireless headphones.
“I thought we’d explore the subconscious theory, I think your capabilities might lie there.”
“Why are you so sure I have these capabilities?”
“You might not see it but there are things I’ve seen that would suggest you’re not so ordinary.” She waved away any further comment from Nancy and lead her towards the targets. “I want you to relax, listen to the music, and then, when you get the signal, throw the knife.” Nancy looked at her like she was crazy but Shuri only grinned, nodding enthusiastically. The music started in her ear and Nancy instinctively tensed up, Tchaikovsky, the same music from that night at the ballet. Nancy tried to relax, she breathed deeply closing her eyes. She stood there for many minutes, her breathing settled, and she twirled the blade lightly across her knuckles. She stretched her neck out from side to side. As the music built to its climax a loud klaxon sounded. Nancy’s hand shot out on instinct. The knife spun through the air and landed on the target, imbedded to the hilt, dead centre. Nancy’s head snapped round to Shuri who was clapping her hands.
“That was a fluke.” Nancy insisted.
“No, no it wasn’t, look.” She turned her tablet around, “See the rise in the subconscious, then when the klaxon sounded how it fell after. The subconscious is most active in dreaming or when relaxed. When you felt threatened, you threw the knife, no active thought.” They tested it again, first throwing knives, 5/5 hit the exact same spot. They also tested her running, much to her displeasure. With the music playing she reached higher speeds then ever before, Shuri mapped the progress on her tablet.
“But that doesn’t explain what happened with Bucky.” Nancy said after removing the headphones. Experiments over for the day, her and Shuri made their way back to the lab.
“You were asleep weren’t you, possibly dreaming, if you felt threatened perhaps your mind reached for the only weapon at your disposal.”
“And that was Bucky” Nancy froze for a minute, “I was dreaming, I was dreaming of Kit, I kept losing him.”
“You were distressed, the Winter Solider sensed that and reached through Bucky to stop the threat.” Shuri kept explaining, light building in her eyes from realisation as she pieced together the new information.
“Oh Bucky,” she croaked out. He thought he’d tried to kill her, he’d really been trying to save her, and worse because her head had asked him two. He would always try to protect her but if she had abilities like his, if she could control them, utilise them, then maybe she could defend herself. Maybe she could be more than just a socialite. Images formed in her head, her and Bucky fighting side by side. It wasn’t an unpleasant thought. A chance, a gift of sorts from destiny. She could defend the world, just like Bucky and Sam.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a notification on Shuri’s tablet. Match found. They looked between each other before approaching the large monitor.
The record was displayed on the screen.
Duncan Everett
Nancy didn’t recognise the name, but she knew the face. It was the dark-haired man.

Chapter 9
Shuri led Nancy back to her lab, Nancy looked around in awe at the screens and monitors. She saw one with Bucky’s face on it, lines of data forming around the edge.
“I’m monitoring Bucky, trying to see what caused last nights relapse, but it got me thinking.” She explained leading Nancy to a chair beside her desk. “Soulmates have been around as long as anyone can remember, but no real research has been done, they tend to be quite secretive.” She said inspecting Nancy’s neck with warm fingers. “If your willing I have some theories I’d like to test.”
“What were you thinking?” Nancy asked,
“There’s some form of bio-chemical link between you and Bucky, symbiosis of sorts, I’ve seen your medical records, I know what happened to you following the blip. From what I’ve found those soulmates who were separated, well most of them didn’t make it, and their soulmates never returned.”
“And you want to test how far this link goes?” Nancy said, realising the plan.
“Exactly that.” She grinned opening a small metal box beside her. Inside was a small, round metallic device, it looked similar to the beads around her wrist only flatter. “May I?” She indicated to the back of Nancy’s neck. Nancy swept her loose hair round to her front as Shuri pressed the disk to the nape of her neck. It felt cool and weightless. “There, that’ll measure your brain activity, your vitals and the like. I’ll compare the two of you, see if there’s any consistencies.”
“That’s so cool.” Nancy remarked seeing her own picture appear on the screen next to Bucky’s, her own data starting to appear.
“It you think that’s cool, you haven’t seen anything yet.” She stood up gesturing Nancy to follow. “I was thinking about why you should have survived when the other separated soulmates died. I thought what the difference could be. The serum that runs in Bucky’s veins, it’s never run in yours, but you’re bound to him and you were born decades after he was experimented on. If I’m right about this link then I think you might have some of his capabilities.” Nancy stared at her bewildered.
“I have never had any form super strength.” She protested.
“Maybe not, but recovering, like you did, that was impressive.” Shuri insisted. She led Nancy to the training room.
“What do you need me to do?” Nancy sprung lightly from foot to foot, she’d missed her gym back in London.
“Just a few basic exercises at first, we’ll go from there.”
Shuri started her running on a treadmill built into a panel on the floor. Her heart rate was monitored as well as the impact her feet were having on the ground. She then moved her to some loose weights, measuring the nerve activity in her muscles. She led her over to some targets on the wall, passing her some throwing knives. Her aim wasn’t poor but far from perfect, Shuri kept tapping away on her screen in the corner. By the end of the session Nancy’s bones ached and her head was dizzy with exhaustion. When they returned to the lab Shuri indicated to a bed in the corner.
“Do you think you could rest in here, I’d love to take readings from your sleep state.” Nancy simply nodded, the poor sleep the previous night twinned with the exertions in the training room allowed sleep to come easily.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Buck we need you on your A game today,” Sam said coming to sit beside Bucky as Torres flew the jet over Europe. “We’re doing this for her.”
“I know.” Bucky said scratching his head, “I just thought this was over.”
“I know you did. This was just a relapse. Shuri will figure out what’s going on up there,” he indicated to Bucky’s temple, “And we’ll fix it.” Bucky shook his head.
“It’s not that simple he could’ve killed her Sam. I could have killed her” He almost shouted.
“No you couldn’t, don’t you see?” Sam persisted, “She stopped you, she brought you back. No Russian words, no powers, no helicopter to the head. Just her. Now I only know one other person who could do that.”
“Steve.” Bucky sighed.
“Exactly.”
“But I hurt her, how could she ever forgive me. Who wants to be with someone capable of that?”
“She’s your soulmate, you’re not capable of hurting her and she’s not capable of hating you.” Although Sam’s words were encouraging, Bucky still felt the guilt pulsing through his veins. Every time he closed his eyes her face appeared behind his lids, contorted in pain, pleading with him. He tried to focus on mission at hand, finding the dark-haired man, getting to the bottom of his pursuit of Nancy. He just had to focus. He dove into his pocket pulling out the compact mirror Nancy had given him the night before. Before it had all gone so wrong. He opened it seeing only himself staring back. He imagined her there smiling back at him. He snapped it shut again pulling out his phone to send her a text.
‘I miss you.’ He started, staring at his phone not knowing what else to say. He sent the text closing his phone and heading into the cockpit to see the sky opening up in front of them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Miss Cartwright,” Shuri gently shook her awake. “There’s something I’d like you to see.” Nancy stretched out on the bed.
“Please, it’s Nancy, Just Nancy.” She protested, dragging her aching limbs out of the bed.
“Alright Nancy, look at this.” She enlarged a stream of data on the screen. “This shows your brain activity whilst sleeping, your subconscious.”
“Okay.” Nancy said following the rise and fall of the red line.
“Okay, so this is Bucky’s subconscious.” She dragged his data across to overlap Nancy’s. “Do you see the spikes here?” Nancy nodded, “it echoes the spikes in yours.”
“No, that’s not possible.” Nancy starred at the overlapping lines in amazement.
“You see the Winter Solider, he is part of Bucky’s subconscious,” Shuri explained.
“So you mean…” realisation dawned in her eyes.
“I think it’s possible something in your subconscious woke him up. And in waking him he reverted to what he knows.” Shuri continued.
“Killing.” Nancy sobbed.
“But you also managed to stop him. The winter solider stood down for you.”
“He did.” Nancy sniffed, she’d stopped him, she’d brought Bucky back.
“He did, and I think I might be able to figure out what it was that woke him to begin with, but I’ll need to do some more tests with you first. Are you up for it?” Shuri asked, excitement ablaze in her eyes.
“Could it help him, stop it from happening again, he’ll be tearing himself apart over this.”
“I think it might.”
“Then yes, whatever it takes.” Nancy said with all the conviction she possessed. “But I wonder if you could do me a favour?”
“Of course,” the Princess agreed.
“I’d like to look into the circumstances of my brother’s death, would you help me?”
“Sure.” She said smiling sympathetically. Nancy always hated other people’s pity, but she had gotten used to it. She closed her eyes.
“We can’t tell anyone what we’re doing though, please, not my father, not even Bucky, not till I know what I could be looking at.” Nancy bit her lip nervously, she hoped she was right in trusting Shuri, she knew she couldn’t find what she needed alone.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Christopher Cartwright had been at the top of his game, fresh out of Eton, good grades, a loving family, when he’d decided to enrol at Sandhurst. He felt with everything going on in the world he had a duty to his country to serve. So, serve he did, throwing himself into military training with enthusiasm. He’d never seen his mother look as proud as the day he passed out, an officer of the Royal Navy. That night he’d partied like it was the last night on earth. After that he was fully committed, swearing his life to the military, dumping his then boyfriend, throwing away any previous ideas of joining politics like his father, rejecting his sisters calls. He was a solider now, his duty had to come first. Two tours and 5 medals later he was recruited by a specialist training facility. It was on one of these training missions that tragedy struck, and he perished at sea along with his whole unit. All further information was classified, an empty casket had been buried, no body could be recovered.
Nancy had been 18 at the time. It had destroyed her parent’s marriage, caused her father to flee the country, her mother to move county and Nancy to be left alone. Nancy remembered the funeral well, the black coffin draped in the union flag, Kit’s military portrait standing at the front, the rose arrangements reading ‘Brother’ and ’Son’. People she hadn’t known had stood up sharing stories she’d never heard. They’d shaken her father’s hand and patted her on the shoulder. The whole day had seemed surreal, like it was for someone else’s brother.
The months following were filled with crippling grief. Then university provided a helpful distraction and Nancy managed to throw herself into her degree. In all that time she’d never really dealt with what his death meant for her, her heart never could accept that her big brother, who had always been there, was gone. He was the one who’d chase her around the garden with a water pistol and the hottest day of the year. He had snuck into her room during the thunderstorms to hold her hand because he knew how much they’d scared her. They’d grown together and played together. He’d pulled funny faces behind their mother’s back when she was being told off. She’d snuck into their father’s study to steal back Kit’s Gameboy when it was confiscated for pulling faces behind their mother’s back. She remembered terrorising Acedown Court’s garden with screams and cheers playing pirates with the neighbour’s children. Falling asleep in the back of the car on the way back from holiday after eating too many travel sweets. They had been a double act. Until he’d joined the Navy.
Then a few weeks ago the first glimpse of hope, a hope she didn’t dare speak out loud, not even to Bucky. The man in with dark hair, he could be lying, he most likely was, but there was a chance. Kit might just be alive. She’d be damned if she didn’t find him.

Alazine and Mannie vs. Vrinestia: The Intruder
Okay, so we know the title is a little unusual. The names probably don’t mean a whole lot to you, but hear us out. Give these kids a chance to shine, and who knows… you might just find elements of yourself somewhere there too.
Tumblr media
Alazine is a young woman with a whole lot of spunk but not a lot of confidence to express it. She’s had a hard life, and finds it hard to trust other people, especially with her biggest secret. I mean, psychic powers can sort of cause issues if too many people find out about them. Especially when she’s the only person who has them, as far as she knows. Alazine is going to have to dig deep and find it in herself to trust a complete stranger if she’s going to stand a chance of surviving her crazy adventure with her sanity and mind intact.
Tumblr media
Speaking of a complete stranger, meet Mannie. Sure, he might not seem like much to start with, and he’d be inclined to agree with you, but this boy has some hidden depths to him that he needs some help discovering. Once he figures out that he may have misjudged Alazine and that they actually are more alike than either of them initially realized, the two will have to learn to rely on each other to stop Vrinestia, the power hungry BioTech company who has their influence woven throughout everything they know.
Can Alazine and Mannie set aside their differences and unite against Vrinestia? Will Alazine ever find the strength to trust someone with her powers? Can Mannie learn to trust himself? And what do Alazine’s late parents have to do with all this? Find out in the first book of the Alazine and Mannie Trilogy: The Intruder

Chapter 8
It was a few weeks before Bucky and Sam found any leads on the masked men. Nancy spent her days exploring Wakanda with her father or Bucky, taking dinners at Katima’s and helping the boys with their search. Bucky seemed comfortable there, spending every night curled round Nancy, training with Sam in the morning and catching up with Shuri. He knew these people, they’d taken care of him and healed him in so many ways. He loved seeing Nancy interact with them, loved seeing her learn more about the country, a fresh set of eyes on its unique beauty. He felt pride brew in his chest when he saw her watching him train, smiling down on the ring from the balcony above. Dinner with her father had gone better than their initial meeting with Katima acting as a helpful buffer. He took Nancy down to the lake where he’d spent his rehabilitation, he explained to her the process of removing the winter solider, he opened up more than he ever had to his therapist or Sam. He felt himself relaxing into their routine, getting comfortable. It was all lovely almost perfect if it wasn’t for the masked men hanging over them like a dark cloud.
“It’s so calm here,” Nancy remarked, leaning against Bucky’s shoulder. They sat side by side on the grassy meadow by the lake’s edge. They’d brought food down with them, now their picnic was finished they watched the sunset, painting the water with oranges and reds.
“It is, I wish I could stay here longer.” Bucky said throwing an arm around her.
“No, not yet.” She said looking up at him in alarm.
“Nancy, Sam and I found a lead, more accurately Shuri found us a lead.” Bucky said his eyes pleading with her. “Redwing took footage of the incident at the airfield and Shuri managed to find a match for the dark-haired man, it took a while we found a match. He’s been spotted in Amsterdam.”
“Any information on who he is?” Nancy asked.
“Nothing yet but we’ll get it, we’ll bring him in, get to the bottom of all this. That’s a promise.” He said kissing her cheek softly.
“Are you sure I can’t come with you?”
“Yes, I need to know you’re safe.” He cupped her cheek the way that made her heart melt.
“I just want more time.” She said stroking her thumb across the back of his hand. “It’s been like a dream, a break, these days with you.”
“When this is over it’ll be just the two of us for as long you want.” He pressed his forehead against hers. She bit her lip nodding before kissing him.
“You stay safe, you come back to me.” She whispered against his lips. He kissed her back in silent agreement.
Later they made their way back to the apartment, falling into bed together and then, much later, into sleep.
Nancy dreamt in vivid colour, fairground rides whirled around her, she could hear Kit calling for her. She ran through the fair catching glimpses of him ahead of her. Every step she took he moved further away. She tried calling out to him, but no words came out. Kit lead her into a mirror maze. She saw facets of herself spreading around her. Kit was gone. She spun around as the maze seemed to spread around her extending away from her at all angles. She fell to her knees and the glass shattered around her.
She awoke with a jolt. She gasped in a breath and found no air could enter, a sharp pressure surrounded her neck. As her eyes adjusted to the dark she saw Bucky’s face above hers. His jaw set in stone his eyes empty of soul. It wasn’t Bucky, it was the Winter Solider.
“Bucky,” she choked out, her head spinning from lack of oxygen. “Bucky, it’s me.”
He frowned down at her as she thrashed frantically trying to shake the super solider off.
“Please.” She managed as dots started clouding her vision.
Bucky sprung back suddenly, launching himself across the room. He looked from her to his hands to her neck. Breathing heavily, he grabbed him clothes from the floor and fled the room.
“Bucky wait!” Nancy screamed, scrambling to her feet. She wobbled dangerously head spinning and she fell back into the mattress. Tears streamed from her eyes as she heard the door slam. She curled up tightly rocking back and forth as more tears fell. She couldn’t make sense of what had happened but any attempt to move or go after him made bile rise in her burning throat.
Bucky ran through the building and out into the night. He scratched his head, pulling at his hair trying to get a hand on his breathing. His feet knew where to take him as he ran through the Wakandan streets. His feet found the stairs to the palace taking them two at a time. The guards, recognising him, let him through without question. He made his way to the lab, a single desk light on as he saw the princess sprawled over her desk. He knocked lightly on the glass door behind her and she jumped awake turning slowly in her desk chair. One look at his tear-stained face and she was on her feet opening the door and leading him in.
“Sergeant Barnes, what’s happened?” She led him to a chair before stepping back carefully.
“I need your help.” he gasped out.
Sam appeared by his side a few minutes later, Shuri had called for him. She set up some diagnostic tests monitoring Bucky thoroughly. She’d also sent a medic to Nancy’s apartment to check on her.
“Buck, it’s going to be okay.” Sam said delicately placing his hand on Bucky’s shoulder.
“I could have killed her Sam, what was I thinking. I thought he was gone.” He buried his head in his hands.
“I’m finding no abnormal brain activity, it appears to be a momentary lapse.” Shuri said encouragingly. Bucky shook his head. “Sleep here, I’ll monitor you as you sleep, see if it’s something that happens when you’re unconscious. Sam can watch you as well, make sure you don’t hurt anyone.” He looked appreciatively at them both.
“Thank you, is she okay?” He asked them both.
“She’s shaken but she’s okay, they say she’s asking for you.” Share replied, having received the information via text a few minutes earlier.
“How do I face her?”
“She knows who you are Bucky, she knows you didn’t mean it.” Sam said.
“Wait till the morning, lets run more tests, you have to see her before you leave.” He nodded, agreeing with Shuri.
Nancy lay back as the medic removed the neck brace.
“All better,” he said as Nancy flexed her neck experimentally.
“That’s amazing,” she said feeling no remaining tenderness. She lay back on her bed as the medic stood up to take his leave.
“Where is Bucky?” She asked as he reached the door.
“Sergeant Barnes is being monitored in the Princesses lab tonight. For you safety and his peace of mind.”
Nancy nodded pulling the sheets up to her neck. Wakandan Medicine may fix most wounds, but it couldn’t fix the pain in her heart. It was as though she could feel his turmoil. She didn’t sleep merely drifted in and out of consciousness. Tossing and turning she knotted herself up in the loose sheets.
The ping of her phone disturbed her, it was 5:30 and she had a text from Sam.
‘Me and Buck are leaving, I know he’ll regret it if he doesn’t say goodbye.’
Nancy sprung to her feet, pulling on a top and shorts before setting of at a run. She found them loading the jet, Torres waved at her cheerfully alerting Bucky to her presence.
“Nancy, I’m sorry,” He started. she silenced him with a hand over his mouth.
“I’m fine, whatever happened last night, we’ll get to the bottom of it. But don’t you leave me without a goodbye.” she stared him down until he cracked, wrapping her in a tight hug and kissing her delicately on the head.
The wind whipped around her as the jet took off, she waved briefly at it, straightening her shoulders and shaking out her hair. She wiped her tears from her eyes. Shuri appeared quietly at her side.
“Miss Cartwright?” She said softly. Nancy turned to face the Princess. “I wondered if you could help me with something.”
“Anything.” She responded.

Chapter 7
Something snapped between them, an unfamiliar force locked them tighter together. Bucky’s arms looped round her back, pulling her against him. She felt his hands fan out across her back, felt his heart beating against her chest. His mouth was desperate against hers ad he pushed her back, too hard, to the wall behind them. Nancy let out an auditable gasp as her head hit the wall. Bucky jumped back.
“I’m sorry,” he stammered.
“It’s okay, that was intense,” she caught her breath. She moved forward to join him, but he took a step back.
“I don’t want to hurt you.” He whispered
“You won’t.” He let her join him this time.
“Sometimes I don’t know my own strength. It’s been such a long time Nancy, I don’t know if I know how to treat you right.” He admitted, swiping a finger over her cheekbone.
“Then I’ll show you.” She whispered taking his hand and leading him into the bedroom. She sat him on the edge of the bed then straddled him carefully. She traced her fingers over the contours of his face, ran a hand through his hair before pressing her forehead against his. She kissed him softly then, hands exploring the expanse of his back. He followed her lead, gentle kisses, softly striking her back, one hand found itself in her damp hair. She lowered her hands on his back, attempting to hitch his t-shirt up.
“Wait,” he said drawing back.
“It’s okay, we don’t have to.” She said holding her hands up.
“Believe me, I want to, it’s just it’s not a pretty sight.” He gestured to his chest and shoulders. Nancy felt her heart drop.
“I’ll show you mine if you show me yours.” She jested. Bucky’s brow creased in confusion. Taking a deep breath, Nancy pulled her vest over her head. Now sat in her plain black bra she gave Bucky full view of her abdomen. It was littered with small round scars beneath her rib cage and the side of her waist. They were evenly spaced, clean and tidy. Bucky ran his fingertips over a few of them.
“What happened?”
“Explorative surgery.” Nancy shivered under his touch, she struggled to meet his eyes. “When the blip happened and half of everything disappeared, I got sick, really sick, the doctors couldn’t work out what was wrong. I was so weak I was so weak, I couldn’t walk, I could barely stand. I spent a year in my hospital bed being fed from a tube.” She indicated to the scar at her waste. “I was losing weight like crazy and the doctors couldn’t find a cause, and so they resorted to surgery,”
“Did they find anything?” Bucky asked.
“No, eventually they declared although I was weak, I was stable. They sent me home after some rehab work. I was still always so tired though, most days I’d be sleeping 20 hours or more. I recovered slowly, built my strength back up. It took a few years, but I managed.”
“So, you never knew what happened?” He skimmed his hands up her side now, finding her shoulders and squeezing the tension he felt there away.
“No, I found out, Bucky the blip took you away, when that happened you took part of me with you. I’ve never felt stronger than the day everyone came back.”
“Nancy, I’m so sorry.” He gasped out.
“It’s okay, it’s all going to be okay now.” She reached forward for him, finding his lips again. He drew back briefly to remove his own t-shirt. Baring the mangled flesh of his left shoulder to her. She looked at it briefly, the point where metal met flesh in a seam of scar tissue. She pressed her palms flat against his chest.
“Does it hurt?” Nancy whispered, Bucky silently shook his head, staring at her hands against him.
“Nancy,” he breathed.
“Yeah,” she looked up, locking her eyes to his.
“Thank you.” He said softly, capturing her lips in his before she could question him. She giggled appreciatively in response.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Later they lay together in a tangle of sheets and limbs. Nancy’s cheek rested on Bucky’s chest whilst he ran his fingers through her hair. Nancy shifted slightly and Bucky noticed her wince slightly. He paused his ministrations.
“I didn’t hurt you did I?” He fretted. Nancy pressed a kissed to his sternum before pulling herself up onto her elbow.
“No, you didn’t.” She smiled sleepily at him before laughing softly, biting her lip.
“What is it?” he couldn’t help smiling when she laughed, he could listen to that sound all day.
“It’s true what the movies say, it is different with your soulmate.” She blushed profusely.
“It certainly is.” He agreed stretching out and pulling her close into his side, kissing the top of her head. “Sam and I talked and we both decided, we are going to go after these terrorists, we’ll get to the bottom of all this and we’ll get you safe.”
“Okay, where do we start?”
“No Nancy, me and Sam, you should stay here, they can protect you.”
“No, I’m coming with you.”
“You can’t, I owe Wakanda an un-payable debt. Whoever those men were, they mean to harm this place as well as you, I can’t allow that. And I won’t risk you either, I need to know you’re safe.” He rolled to face her. “I’ll need your help though, we need to find out who they are and what they want.”
“And you think I can help with that because?” Nancy raised her eyebrows at him.
“Because you’re as stubborn as you are beautiful,” he kissed the tip of her nose, “you won’t give up till you find the answers.”
“I still don’t want you to leave me.”
“I’ll never really leave you,” he traced one of the scars by her ribs, “not again.”
“you’ll carry my compact with you.” She said suddenly, “and you’ll see me, whenever you need me text me and I’ll be waiting by a mirror for you.”
“hey, hey, I’m not going yet, but soon, and of course, I already look for you in every window I pass, every puddle on a wet day, everywhere.”
“I’ve been doing the same thing.” she laughed.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They stayed in bed the rest of the evening. Bucky briefly got up to find food and brought back a small picnic of bits he’d found in the fridge. They ate together whilst Bucky told her stories from his childhood, speaking of his sisters and Steve, then he listened to her tales of boarding school and the exploits that she had got up too. She told him about the friends she’d had who’d gone on to bigger things whilst she’d been left behind. He told her what he knew of his captivity and what he remembered of the first time he’d seen her, how he hadn’t know what was going on the winter solider had tried to shoot her reflection. He tried apologising again but Nancy wouldn’t hear of it. She told him about her great-grandmother whose necklace Bucky had admired. The old family story of how she’d eloped to marry Nancy’s great-grandfather, how they had been soulmates from different classes. She joked that Bucky could have met her back in the 40s and not remember it. They ended the evening curled round each other again. Bucky humming softly whilst Nancy slipped into sleep. Bucky watched her, he couldn’t move without disturbing her, but sleep evaded him. He watched her instead. The gentle rise and fall of her chest, the way her toes twisted in the bed sheet as she shifted to get comfortable, and the way she burrowed tight into his side.
He didn't know when he fell asleep but his dreams were full of Nancy's laugh, her smile and the colour of her hair in the sunlit car. It was the best nights sleep he'd had in 70 years.

Chapter 6
The journey to Wakanda passed quietly, Sam and Torres sat in the cockpit whilst Nancy dozed against Bucky’s shoulder. It had been a long 24hrs and the few hours of rest on her sofa hadn’t curbed her exhaustion. She remembered what her doctor had told her about taking things easy, well she certainly hadn’t been doing that, these past few months she’d felt stronger than she had in 5 years. Still she rested. Bucky watched over her silently, absentmindedly twirling a piece of her hair again. Mid way through the trip she woke up and smiled up at Bucky.
“Hey, do you know how much further it is?” She asked stretching out.
“Couple of hours at least.”
“No in flight movie?” She laughed.
“I’m afraid not”
“Sorry, I keep falling asleep on you.” She brushed the creases out of his jacket.
“Keep the habit, I don’t mind.” He swung an arm round her shoulders. “Tell me about your dad.”
“What do you want to know?” She asked.
“I don’t know, what’s he like. You don’t talk about him much.”
“Well…” Nancy told him, told him about Martin Cartwright. The man who’d carried her around on his shoulders when she was little. Who’d locked his work away in his study and never brought it into the home. Who’d chased Kit around the garden on the weekends. Whose marriage had broken down and how hard he’d tried to hide it from her and her brother. Who’d left her alone in London for a job he was dreading only to fall in love with Wakanda, with the people and the culture and Katima. She told him about his frantic phone calls, asking her to help him out by attending a function the next day that he wouldn’t be able to make, that had then become a more common occurrence.
“I think my father stopped coming home because what home was changed for him. He’d rather stay out there, help communications between our countries, he’s not so interested in the politics anymore.”
“And you are?” Bucky asked.
“No, I’m no politician, I’m a distraction. Mr financial secretary is having issues at home, his 13-year-old daughter is going through a difficult stage and he just wishes things could go back to how they used to be, his wife doesn’t look how she did when she was 25 anymore and he knows he doesn’t look the same either. They’re arguing more than they are talking and so he leaps at the chance to escort a young rich socialite to the ballet. He then makes some half-hearted attempts to lobby her for information but inevitably he falls asleep, not before making some obvious attempts to peek down the front of her dress, deciding she knows nothing and there is little behind those green eyes he liked so much and she’s not even worthy of proper conversation. She’s just another pretty face, should make his wife jealous though.”
“You’re more than just a pretty face. So much more.” Bucky stroked his thumb over her cheek bone. He felt an anger within him, a strong regret that he hadn’t thrown the financial secretary out of the box the night before.
“I can play part. Played it for so long I don’t know what I am, my dad tells me nothing of what he’s doing, what his plans for British-Wakanda relations are. All I know is he won’t let my people take advantage of the Wakandans,”
“I’d like to see them try,” Bucky interjected, and Nancy nodded.
“But you see they will try, not the British people per se, but the people at the top, they will always try to exploit for their own gain. My father’s made a lot of people unhappy with his silence on matter.”
“Good, though I’m surprised they let him keep his post so long.”
“They tried to remove him once, the Wakandans wouldn’t allow it, they said they wouldn’t accept a replacement.” Although she’d been pleased her dad’s job was safe, she had taken the brunt of the British displeasure, she’d heard the whispers behind her back at dinners. That her father should be looking out for his own country first, especially after everyone returned from the blip. Some thought earning Nancy’s favour would give then a path to her father. So many insincere friendships had made Nancy feel more alone than ever. And then Bucky had appeared.
Bucky looked thoughtful for a moment. He stared into her eyes and smiled.
“I have a feeling I’m going to like your father. Standing up for what is right even if his country is against him, reminds me of a man I knew. A couple on men actually.” His eyes drifted behind her to the cockpit. As if he sensed his gaze Sam turned around.
“Not long now princess, you might want to come up here and see this.” He called over to her. Nancy carefully removed the straps securing her to the bench and made her way into the cockpit. Torres’s expression matched hers as the giant black panther came into view.
“It’s amazing.”
“I can’t believe you’ve never been here before.” Bucky had silently appeared behind her.
Torres landed the jet expertly and not wanting to wait for steps to be put in, Bucky leapt from the plane lifting Nancy down after him. As soon as her feet hit the ground she was running, seeing her dad across the tarmac. He met her halfway enveloping her in a crushing embrace. He had greying blond hair and Nancy’s green eyes. He was wearing smart tailored suit which looked out of place next to the Wakandans manning their landing strip.
“Angel, thank god you’re safe, I never would’ve forgiven myself-“ He was a few inches shorter than Nancy’s 5’11”.
“I’m okay dad.” She hugged him back just as tight.
“Are you, you’ve been okay, no instances?”
“Dad, I promise you, I’m okay.” Bucky and Sam had stood back giving the pair some space, as Nancy drew away they both came to her side.
“Thank you, all three of you,” he waved at Torres who was still in the cockpit. “I am eternally grateful.”
“That’s what we do.” Sam said extending his hand, which Martin shook whole heartedly.
“Let’s get you inside, I’ve had a room made up for you, I’m sure you need rest, I’ll get some food put together,”
“Dad we need to talk, these people they meant business, I have a right to know what’s going on.” Nancy stood tall, she reached her hand out, reaching for Bucky’s, she needed the strength his touch gave her. Bucky stepped closer to her, breathing deeply and laced their fingers together. It didn’t go unnoticed, Martin Cartwright frowned, but said nothing about it.
“Nancy, you should rest we’ll talk later.”
“No, we’ll talk now.” She stayed firm.
“Okay, okay.” He gave in, leading them inside a large building with walls of windows. Through winding corridors, he led the trio to an empty meeting room. Martin sat on the edge of the table.
“Tell me what happened.” They each explained, Nancy her night at the ballet, Sam and Bucky described the men who had fought them and then followed them through London, they explained staying at the house until Torres could bring them to Wakanda, they spoke of the confrontation at the airfield though Nancy left out the mention of her brother.
“I am immeasurably grateful,” he thanked them again, “I should like to speak to my daughter alone,” Nancy held Bucky fixed by her side whilst Sam was led away by a member of the Dora Milaje.
“Bucky stays.” She said shortly, viewing her dad through narrowed eyes.
“Nancy, what is this?”
“I want you to explain and I want him to hear it to.”
“Explain what?”
“Why? What’s going on that would make someone want to ransom me. This was calculated, planned out, they weren’t giving up. Do you honestly have so much power that they thought it worthy to control you? And who are they? Dad I will stand by you, I trust your choices and judgment, but I can’t do so blindly anymore.” She threw the words at him in one breath.
“And he has to hear all this because?” Martin shot back staring at Bucky who was leaning against the wall, staring straight back.
“Because you put him in danger too.” She said quickly, eyes flicking back to Bucky. He stepped forward resting a hand on her shoulder briefly.
“And because I’m her soulmate.” He said clearly. Martins face changed them, the subtle look of guilt he’d had since their arrival was replaced with sudden fury. He dash forward punching the ex-winter solider back up against the wall, his forearm to his throat. Bucky did nothing to stop him, holding his hands up in surrender.
“Dad!” Nancy shouted.
“You!” He shouted in Bucky’s face, “you gave my daughter nightmares for years, you have haunted our family, don’t think I don’t know who you are!”
“Dad stop, what are you talking about!” She reached out grabbing her father’s shoulders, he turned his head towards her, tears in his eyes.
“You don’t remember, but I do, you were in your ballet class, he appeared, Nancy he tried to shoot you.” Realisation dawned on Bucky’s features.
“It wasn’t me, I don’t even remember that I’m not that person anymore,” Bucky plead. “I’d never hurt her, I couldn’t.”
“I’d never let him.” Nancy stated defiantly. “Please dad, let him go, it cannot be changed, are souls are one, you know this.”
Martin Cartwright released Bucky reluctantly.
“How could you keep this from me, you’ve known he was out there, all this time.” Nancy’s face cracked, a tear escaping her eye.
“I knew him for what he is, a murderer.”
“He isn’t anymore, he is pardoned, the winter solider is gone, I am Bucky’s, and he is mine, you accept us both or neither of us.” She stood beside him now, holding tight to his vibranium hand, the black and gold metal stark against her pale fingers.
“Nancy.” Martin warned, the stern voice she hadn’t heard since childhood.
“Together, or not at all.” She said finally. That conversation ended there, Bucky felt Nancy relax as she realised her father was retreating. He ran a hand through his thinning hair.
“Angel, I don’t know what these people want, I promise you.” He started meeting her eye before adding “I am going to try to tell you more, I just worry, I don’t want to burden you.” Nancy nodded, mouthed a thank you and allowed her father to lead her to her room in the ambassador’s apartment. The embassy building they were in consisted of a ground level of conference room, then each floor held apartments for different countries, all together in one place. Martin mostly stayed at Katima house further into the country, finding it quieter than the busy city. Katima was on her way back from Paris having completed her assignment there, Martin explained to Nancy whilst Bucky went in search of Sam. He hoped they could have dinner the following evening.
“Is Bucky invited?” Nancy asked.
“If he must be, if it means you’ll be there.”
“I’ll be there regardless, but I want him there.” her dad nodded in acceptance.
“Here you are, make yourself at home, I’m sorry I can’t send you back to London, not till I know you’ll be safe.” Nancy resisted insisting that as long as she was with Bucky she would be safe, she didn’t need to rub salt in that wound. He kissed her forehead briefly before walking away. Her dad was still so awkward around her, treating her with kid gloves, distancing himself. She made her way into the apartment, it was tastefully if neutrally decorated with blacks and whites and greys everywhere. She threw her hold-all down on the sofa and made her way through to the bathroom. She ran a steaming hot bath and soaked off the grime of travel. Her skin pink and hair damp she dug out her pyjamas, a loose-fitting red vest top and some black cotton shorts. She explored the apartment then, the bedroom had been prepared with crisp clean sheets, the fridge was stocked, and some additional clothes were folded in the draws. Nancy found herself curled up on the sofa answering a frantic text from Samara when there was a knock at the door, the control panel showed Bucky leaning against the door frame. She skipped over letting him in.
“Nancy, I’m so sorry, I didn’t remember, I never want to hurt you.” he cupped her face with both hands.
“Bucky it’s okay, it wasn’t you,” Nancy protested.
“It was though,” he continued. Nancy covered his mouth with her hand.
“Stop it, we can’t change the past, only our future.” Bucky nodded in agreement as Nancy lowered her hand. She saw Bucky’s eyes dance over her face, noticed the goose bumps from earlier had returned. “It’s been a long time since I’ve done that.” he laughed, kissing her again.
