Card Spotlight - Fear
The fear card is a versatile +1 attack card with a nasty trick up its sleeve. While not always that powerful, it can be situationally very powerful by cutting off access to defense cards. This means that in addition to raising your attack power by one, it allows you to maintain your advantage against vulnerable enemies.
One of the card's most valued attributes is its flexibility. As long as you have a Delylian commander you can use the fear card with any character in your army. This gives you the maximum chance to look for good opportunities to use it.
Visually, the fear card is one of our favorites. The illustration on the card is actually the first draft we were sent by Carly Sorge. While we generally made at least a few passes of edits to even our favorite illustrations, the expression and emotion in this image immediately had us sold.
The fear card is a fun card to play because it cuts off options for your opponent that they may have been relying on. There's very little more satisfying than the way your opponent's facial depression changes when they realize their defense card isn't going to save them. We love how the card's theme, ability and illustration all came together to really sell that feeling.

It's that (crowdfunding) time again!
We’ve got another three exciting projects highlighted on our Kickstarter page!
As the crowdfunding revolution rolls on we keep seeing more and more unique and interesting gaming experiences that would likely never survive the traditional publication process. For people who play a lot of games and are always on the lookout for something new, Kickstarter is really is a godsend, providing avenues of funding for original and untested ideas and collecting them together where they can be perused at any time.
This week we’ve got an insanely pretty retro-inspired 2D FPS, a space exploration card game with a focus on ship and crew management, and a Pokémon-inspired reverse tower defense strategy game by our good friends over at Flat Red Ball.
See an amazing Kickstarter project that we missed? Let us know! We’re always on the lookout for exciting new games :D

Ludum Dare 31
As you may have heard, half the internet is busy making games this weekend for the 31st Ludum Dare game jam and competition. Our own team member Rusty has been working with a team of friends on some kind of swarmy, pikminy looking game. It's kindof gross :)
Tumblr media
If you'd like to keep abreast of their efforts, check out his devblog at EvilBrain.net, or swing by the newly revamped and totally beautiful www.ludumdare.com and check out all the awesome games as they flow in!
**UPDATE**
Their game is posted and you can play it here: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-31/?action=preview&uid=20894

If you've wondered what we've been up to
It's been mostly this :)
vine
Playing the latest WarHaven build is getting more exciting every day, as bugs continue to get squashed and features continue to roll out! We've got a new build coming in almost every day from our friends at FlatRedBall so we've been doing quite a bit of playtesting. The game operates solely in local multiplayer right now, but it has all the essentials of the board game implemented. Also, it's fun as hell!

Kickstarter Kicks Ass!
Pardon the language but we're just still that excited about this platform :) Although we've made the decision for now to seek private funding rather than put WarHaven back on Kickstarter, we've never lost our interest in crowdfunding and the renaissance of creativity it's spurred.
As avid consumers of entertainment media, we felt spoiled last year just picking which projects to back. Now that the games have started coming in, I can't think of one that has disappointed. If you want to see what we're excited about now, we keep the top 3 projects that have our interest at any time on our Kickstart page.
And remember, Kickstarter isn't the end! Just because you missed the deadline to back doesn't mean you have to miss these awesome games. Many games continue crowdfunding after their Kickstarter campaigns end and in any case, gamedevs want to continue selling copies. We keep an archive of Kickstarter projects and the array is quite diverse, from a puzzle game where you actually create music to a card game where players compete to throw the most fabulous party.
The increased freedom for developers to try new and radical things through crowdfunding is already reshaping the entertainment landscape. We can't wait to see what's next :)

Bellies UP!
Fringe Games is excited to announce that, with help of our friends at EvilBrain.net we've published a game!
Tumblr media
Bellies UP is a humorous little game based on our team member Rusty's entry in Ivano Palmentieri's FlappyJam. An unbelievably difficult survival sim/arcade game, Bellies UP casts you as a sick goldfish trying to avoid predation by his tankmates. The cutesy pixel graphics are colored by dark humor and gameplay that is both surprisingly deep and difficult.
We will have a free version up later in the summer, but for now you can get it ad-free on iOS for a buck :)

Artist Spotlight - HuiYen Chen
HuiYen is a full time concept artist based in Malaysia focusing on illustration for games/animations/films. HuiYen's achievements include the award Best Student Work in Asian Youth Animation Comic Contest AYACC 2010 and his works have been published in Exposé 9 (Ballistic Publishing, 2011); Exotique 7 (Ballistic Publishing, 2011); and POPCORN Issue 9 (Gempak Starz , 2011) a comic and illustration magazine publish in Malaysia. We were struck by HuiYen's varied but skilled use of stylization and had him do several illustrations for the first edition of War Haven, focusing primarily on upgrades for our human characters.

Artist Spotlight - Daniel Trajtemberg
Daniel Tajtemberg is a talented graphic designer, illustrator and photographer from Argentina with over twelve years experience working as an illustrator in the music industry. Daniel's art has an old-school epic feel and he has a gift for marrying the focus with the background of an image while keeping both interesting. On perusing his gallery, it was clear he was a perfect fit for War Haven. Daniel completed seven cards for the first edition of War Haven as well as concepts and an illustration of the planet Haven itself.

The Press Update
A few quick updates so far this week!
We've got a new blog posted at WarHavenGame.com with some tips on how to best enjoy the War Haven Print & Play!
We've also updated our presskit and added a landing page to the press section of this site to make it easier for reviewers to get the information they need. As we near the launch of the Kickstarter, press engagement is going to become increasingly important to us, so we're asking any of our friends in the indie community that can to help by spreading word about the Print & Play.
The PressKit is loaded with images and contains a detailed history of both Fringe Games and War Haven, but if you need any more than that, we'd be happy to provide it to you.
Rusty is the team's main press contact and is also available to anyone with questions about the P&P.
