New England gothic
-Look to either side as you drive: there, you will always find the crumbling stone fence. It’s a wall of neatly-fitted rocks that shimmers dimly in the light, staying firmly put there for three hundred years. It lines every street; every off-road path; the highway; your house. You stay inside the lines. The boundaries were drawn long before you were born.
-Past the stone fence, you can see a forest. Seeing, after all, is believing.
-Venture into the forest in groups. Bring your your basket, your lighter, your boots; but linger not in the dreamy shade for too long. Linger not, for as your legs grow weary and your tongue grows thirsty, the smell of wet earth and the sound of the river will lead you in endless loops.
-Sunset falls quickly, but don’t hurry. Nothing ever happens here. Nothing makes the news, and no one has died- nobody ever, none since you’ve been alive. (None of the ones who stayed within the lines.)
-Wait quietly at home as night plows across the lawn, with the wind bringing in all the crooked sounds from nearby: moans from a tree struck twice by lightning; scrambled words whispered through gritted teeth at the house next door. Rhythmic gasps from the railroad a mile away. Something hunted; something caught. Rustling leaves? Maybe not.
-Day breaks clean open. The pale morning sun floods the roads and causes an accident. Traffic on I-95; all cars line up side-by-side to get a glimpse of the wreck.
-Hot beneath the windshield, or maybe on the train, sweat threatens to melt the glue that fixes your smile to your face. This is fine; this is okay. People will politely turn away while you put yourself back together.
-Speak not a word to those you pass on the main roads. They will not speak back.
