Errand of Mercy, KLINGONS!! Brief Summary: The Enterprise must protect the planet Organia from the Klingons. Thoughts: We begin with Kirk and Spock going over new orders from Starfleet Command, they are to proceed to Organia to prevent the Klingons (who negotiations are on the verge of collapse with) from using it as a base. The Klingons are literally already attacking the Enterprise 😬 Kirk orders return fire and the cloaked vessel is destroyed. They arrive at Organia and Kirk and Spock beam down, leaving Sulu in command of the ship. Nice! Soon they meet Ayelborne, the closest thing the inhabitants have for a leader. Also, they have green goats! Anyway, Kirk warns him they’re in danger from the Klingons and Spock decides to take a look around. So Ayelborne takes Kirk to the speak with the council he’s on and they conclude they don’t want any help or protection 🤔 Kirk is baffled and obviously disturbed by this but he can’t convince them. Spock shows up and reveals to Kirk that this civilization hasn’t advanced in anyway for tens of thousands of years. Spooky. Suddenly, Sulu calls and informs them that a large number of Klingon ships just showed up, to which Kirk orders him to retreat and warn starfleet. Meanwhile, a stranded Kirk and Spock get changed into native clothing to blend in. I adore these outfits 😍but more seriously Ayelborne confiscated their phasers 😮 Enter Klingon troops led by Kor (his first appearance!). Well, they take Spock away and Kirk is fretting and Kor chooses him as representative of the civilians. Spock is back, unharmed and deemed telling the truth, phew 😅 He’s free to go so he leaves and Kirk is left to follow Kor’s instructions of keeping the people in check, or he dies. The Devil in the Dark is next, awe the Horta!! Brief Summary: A mysterious monster is killing miners working on Janus VI, the Enterprise is sent to help. Thoughts: So there’s a shift change going on down in the mine and one guy reveals 50 men are dead from this thing already! 😨 Actually, make that 51, the new guard gets burned to a crisp immediately, yikes. The Enterprise arrives at the planet and Kirk, Spock & Bones beam down to meet with Chief Engineer Vanderberg. Vanderberg explains the monster is also destroying their machinery with a corrosive element they can’t identify. Bones goes to examine the remains of the last guard and Spock takes note of the giant silicon sphere they have lying around. Vanderberg says there are a million of them down in the mines, hmmm 🤔 Anyway, Bones is back and concludes the guard wasn’t burned, but the body appears to be completely corroded from an unknown acid. Another guard is killed and the creature also sabotaged a super important part of their nuclear reactor. Kirk’s got Scotty working on it right away. Spock works out the theory that what if life could exist that’s not carbon based, but silicon based. He’s so smart 😍 Bones considers this impossible and is more happy to snark at Spock, but Kirk is totally interested and impressed 👏🏻 Oh jeez, Kirk sends a large group of red shirts down into the tunnels to kill the creature with modified phasers. Kirk and Spock go in as well and Spock registers a silicon based life form on his tricorder. One red shirt down, but we get a view of the creature finally! It’s like a brownish red lava carpet that scuttles around real quick and I love it. Oh my, up next is This Side of Paradise! Spock gets high on alien spores 😜 Brief Summary: The Enterprise is sent to investigate a colony on Omicron Ceti III, where they fall victim to the effects of the planets floral spores. Thoughts: So they’re orbiting the planet and Spock tells Kirk there’s no chance of the colonists survival due to deadly berthold rays. Beaming down to the planet, Kirk, Spock, Bones and Sulu realize the planet and the colonists are completely fine. Elias Sandoval introduces himself and welcomes them around the settlement. Enter Leila Kolami, a beautiful botanist who has a past with Spock. Ooooo 😳 And LOL Kirk senses something immediately! Sulu notices there’s no animals anywhere, also there’s this giant angry looking flower watching him lol Bones does some medical examinations on the colonists and everyone comes up perfect, despite their records showing ailments in the past. Anyway, Leila creepily leads Spock over to one of the flowers and sets him up to be blasted with spores 😬 Oh, poor Spock! He immediately goes fuzzy and admits he loves her 🤦🏼‍♀️ They kiss and I’m cringing. Meanwhile, Kirk is trying to evacuate the colony but Sandoval won’t here of it. So Kirk notices Spock is missing and tries to reach him but Spock ignores him for more smooches with Leila. Finally, he gets in touch with him and Spock disobeys direct orders in the snarkiest way 😂 Kirk sets out to find him and sees Spock climbing a tree and laughing with Leila. Next up is A Taste of Armageddon! I remember this episode really impacting me when I was younger, can’t wait to re-experience it and see how I feel now. Brief Summary: Two warring planets declare the Enterprise destroyed in their war fought by computer simulations. Thoughts: We start with the Enterprise en route to Star Cluster NGC321 to establish diplomatic relations. Eminiar VII is their destination, but they receive a coded warning message not to approach. Ambassador Fox is aboard and he orders Kirk to disregard the message and go to the planet anyway like a jerk. They reach the planet and Kirk prepares to beam down, Spock informing him the civilization may still be at war with its neighboring planet. 50 years ago the USS Valiant was sent to investigate and never returned. Kirk, Spock and the landing party beam down and the planet is clean and beautiful, showing no signs of war. They are greeted by Mea 3, a beautiful woman 💃🏼 She escorts them to a council that question Kirk on why he came here and Kirk explains. It is revealed that Eminiar VII has been at war with the planet Vendikar III for the past 500 years and the Enterprise is now in danger of one of their attacks 😨 And Vendikar attacks immediately of course. The attack is brutal, killing half a million people, but Kirk and Spock observe there are no bombs or destruction of any kind. Spock figures out they fight the war completely with computers. People are registered as killed and have 24hrs to report to the disintegration chamber. Dark, man lol The Enterprise is declared destroyed in the attack and now everyone on board has one day to surrender to the death machines. Oh no, Mea is on the casualty list! Space Seed!! Featuring the first appearance of Khan Noonien Singh! I’ve watched The Wrath of Khan so many times but this episode only once or twice. I’m excited to rewatch it! Brief Summary: The Enterprise finds the SS Botany Bay: a 20th century Earth ship carrying genetically enhanced humans. Thoughts: So the Enterprise finds an old Earth ship from the 1990s and they hail it but there’s no response. Kirk, Spock and Bones talk about the 90s era, Bones calling it the Eugenics Wars. Earth during this time had a group of ambitious scientists that genetically enhanced human beings. It didn’t end well. Anyway, enter Lieutenant Marla McGivers, an historian aboard the Enterprise. She was just about to start painting when she’s called to the transporter room to be part of the landing party. Bones and Scotty accompany as well. They beam over and realize the crew is in cryogenic stasis. They accidentally trigger something and one of the sleepers begins to wake up, presumably the leader 😏 By the way, McGivers is already obviously obsessed with the guy lol They all beam back over to the Enterprise and Bones takes the waking, yet dying man to sickbay. He recovers but is still unconscious. Bones then reveals he’s one of the genetically enhanced humans. The man begins to wake up, alone in the room he grabs a tool off the shelf and gets back into bed before Bones can check on him. He attacks Bones! But he relents after the doctor shows true bravery 😍 Kirk comes down to sickbay and they finally meet! He reveals his name is Khan, and demands his crew to be revived. Kirk postpones this, saying they will be woken when they reach Starbase 12. The Return of the Archons! Landru! 😈 Brief Summary: The crew of the Enterprise discovers an evil ruler named Landru is controlling the inhabitants. Thoughts: Sulu and crewman O’Neil are running on a planet, clearly dressed to fit in. They’re running from these creepy, slowly walking people in brown hooded robes 😨 Oh boy, so O’Neil runs away while the Enterprise is about to beam them up, but Sulu waits. He’s then zapped with one of the brown hooded guys staffs. Finally, he is beamed up. Now aboard, Sulu is acting super weird and dazed, already babbling about Landru. Kirk’s log reveals they are orbiting planet Beta III searching for any sign of the starship Archon that was lost there a century ago. Kirk and a landing party, that includes Spock and Bones, beam down in full civilian costumes 😍 So all the townsfolk are walking around vacantly smiling, but once 6 o’clock hits they start screaming and flipping out 😂 The landing party escapes into a building and is met with a few people who aren’t out of their minds. They provide them with rooms and scold them for not attending the festival outside. The festival ends exactly at 6am the next morning, the behavior of the people going instantly back to being zombies. The brown robed people are called Lawgivers and it’s revealed that their staffs are hollow! The Lawgivers order the landing party to go to the absorption chambers, but Kirk refuses and they literally don’t know what to do about his defiance lol Landru puts the townspeople under telepathic control and has them attack Kirk and crew. Reger, the man who provided them a room, tries to help them by guiding them to safety. O’Neil is found! But Reger says it’s too late, he’s been absorbed into “the body.” Reger reveals a lighting device that is beyond the civilization’s technology, saying it’s from a time before Landru.
