A fact I’m still getting over: just about a month ago, I self published my first book!

Autistic representation time!

Abigail Winters, main character of my book (pictured below).

I never realised how cathartic it would feel to write an autistic character, having lived with autism most of my life. Just being able to express about the following:

• Stimming

• Special interests

• Getting passionate and worked up about special interests

• People not getting why you get so worked up about your special interests

• Overstimulation

• Missing social cues

• Knowing something about you is different, but not quite understanding what and you’re just left wondering what you’re doing wrong

• Meeting someone else with autism

• Learning to realise that you are different and there’s nothing wrong with you

I really hope that, for people who read about this character, they’ll be able to see themselves in her.

So I self published a book and these two disasters are the main characters xD

On the left, we have Abigail Winters. Raised to take over her father’s tavern but her true passion is medicine and healing. She’s reckless, bull-headed and usually misses the obvious. But she’s also loyal, passionate about what she cares about and very set on what she sees as right and wrong.

On the right, Dr. Edgar Caurinus. Plague doctor, though supposedly retired. Perfectly polite, friendly and compassionate despite what his bizarre appearance suggests. But he doesn’t give himself a break for something bad that happened in his past, but won’t go into it.

Also, both characters are coded autistic. A very important and personal thing for me. Please do ask if you want to know more!
