“felix,” your voice is hushed; soft puffs of breath escape your mouth and spiral into the cold air as he tugs you along through the dark. “lix, please, can we slow down?” between your robes and the deep roots of the forbidden forest’s trees, it’s a miracle you haven’t eaten absolute shit yet.

felix slows his stride a bit and turns to look at you with gleaming, excited eyes. his hand is warm in yours as he brings your intertwined fingers up to his mouth, pressing a comforting kiss to your wrist. “sorry, love. i just really can’t wait to show you this.”

you simply sigh and let him carry on, the both of you plunging even deeper into the forbidden forest. the night only seems to get thicker and you try not to panic, clinging to felix’s arm now that you’re both walking at a slower pace.

“so tell me again why you’re dragging me into the middle of the very dangerous forbidden forest at this hour?” you feel him wrap an arm around your waist and press yet another kiss to your temple. you’ve always known your boyfriend to be extremely cuddly, but it never fails to make you blush.

“trust me,” he assures in a voice as sweet as honey, “you’ll see soon enough.”

you decide to drop it for now although you’re growing increasingly anxious over his resistance to give you any information. you trust felix with your life, of course he would never harm you - you’re just not incredibly fond of sneaking around this off-limits area of campus in the middle of the night with no explanation whatsoever.

after another fifteen minutes and some lighthearted conversation, you’re starting to relax when felix abruptly pauses mid-sentence. one of his hands reaches across your body to stop you too, the other hand coming up to his mouth in a shh motion.

your eyes lock with his under the moonlight and he smiles. “we’re here. we need to be as quiet as possible, okay?”

you silently nod, no longer scared but purely curious at this point. the two of you creep forward with as little noise as you can muster and you squint into the murky black in front of you, trying to catch a glimpse of whatever exciting thing felix has been dying to show you.

and suddenly, you do.

there, curled up in a small grassy field shrouded in stars, is a baby unicorn. your eyes grow to the size of saucers as you peer at felix; the energy around you both shifts as quickly as a bolt of lightening, and you immediately feel the urge to cradle the animal in your arms.

“oh, felix,” you grasp at his shoulder, trying to contain the jittery feeling of eagerness expanding in your chest. “it’s- how did you find it?”

“i think she might have been abandoned by her family or something,” he explains, voice wilting a little in sadness though his eyes still maintain a fondness as he gazes at the creature. “i was just walking along the edge of the forest a few weeks ago and saw her all by herself… so i started coming out here a few nights a week to feed her and play with her. oh, and i named her luna,” he blushes at the confession.

you could almost cry over how endearing felix is as your eyes settle on the unicorn, eyebrows knitting in concern. “felix, it’s amazing that you’ve done all of this. truly. but,” you cup his face in your palm, thumb gently brushing the freckles on his cheek. “babies are hard work, love… you won’t always be around to care for her.”

he sighs and leans into your touch. “i know, i know. i’m going to bring her to hagrid’s soon, since he’ll know what to do with her. but i still wanted to show you before that happens. let you pet her and all that. she loves belly rubs, you know-“

you nod in understanding and softly kiss his mouth to shut him up. felix always rambles a bit when he’s worried, and you can tell without speaking how disappointed he is to give her away. it’s not hard to understand, either - not when the baby is shyly watching you both, cute little horn twinkling in the dim light with her fluffy, pastel pink legs tucked beneath her tiny body.

“well, for now,” you take his hand once more, letting him lead you over to luna with a smile, “she can be our little secret.”

“baby, come on!” jisung barely gives you a chance to get your coat on properly before he’s tugging at your wrist. “we’re the last ones here!”

your hands rest on your hips as you glare at him. “and who’s fault is that? i’m not the one who set my hair on fire in class this morning.”

jisung blushes, continuing to usher you outside into the snowy air. “i told you... it was an accident. and professor flitwick was very understanding, i’ll have you know.”

you can’t help but laugh, ruffling his slightly charred bangs as you two begin the winding walk to hogsmeade. it’s valentine’s day weekend, and jisung had been gushing all damn week about taking you out to celebrate your anniversary. since he asked you out on valentine’s day during your first year and his second, you two are happily celebrating two years together.

the cold nips at your cheeks, turning both your faces a rosy pink as you walk along with hands intertwined and stuffed in jisung’s coat pocket. “i can’t believe you’ve never tried butterbeer before,” jisung shakes his head, a look of disapproval in his eyes.

“okay, mr. fourth-year. sorry i only just turned the legal drinking age-“

just then, you look and realize jisung is no longer next to you. a tiny ball of anxiety clutches at your chest, though before you can even turn around you’re hit square in the back by something.

a cold, snowy something.

whipping around, you get a snowball to the face this time. as the flurries of snow float away, you’re met with a giggling, devilish jisung, along with another dozen of fresh snowballs floating in the air around him. aimed directly at you.

by the time you’ve outrun jisung and his bewitched army of snowballs, you’re stumbling into the doorway of the three broomsticks, a panting jisung at your heels. “come back, baby, i’m sorry!” he’s laughing behind you.

acting annoyed, you playfully huff before going off to find an empty booth in its own little secluded corner. before you can sit, though, jisung gently grabs your wrist and turns you to him. his eyebrows are knit with worry, hands gingerly pushing the coat off your shoulders and onto the booth behind you, slowly rubbing your arms up and down. “i mean it, baby. are you mad at me? i already said s-“

finally, you crack; a sheepish grin appears on your face as you take his hands and link your fingers together, shyly looking down at both of your muddy, snow-soaked sneakers. “i’m not mad, sungie. i was just teasing you a little,” you confess, giggling to yourself.

jisung’s face flashes with surprise, relief, and then humor before he pushes you into the booth. with his arms wrapped around your waist, he stuffs his face into your neck as he whines his complaints. “why is my baby so cruel??”

“would you be willing to call a truce if i buy you butterbeer?” you try to coax him back out, which almost works as he peers up at you from his position in basically your lap.

“hell no. my princess’s butterbeer is on me,” he kisses your mouth and rests his forehead on yours. “happy anniversary, baby.”

it’s only been a total of five minutes since professor slughorn finished giving your class instructions for today’s potion, and hyunjin is already arguing with you.

“are you dumb? mistletoe berries don’t go in amortentia.” the sound of his arrogant voice alone makes you roll your eyes.

“you slytherin are truly insufferable, you know that?” you snap at him, grabbing mistletoe berries from the cauldron cupboard before returning to your seat. hyunjin is hot on your heels, unable to surrender any banter between the two of you.

“so then why, exactly, do we need those? explain it to me since you clearly think you’re the smart one here.”

your blood boils and you grit your teeth; trying to maintain an element of calm in your demeanor, you pop a piece of cinnamon gum into your mouth and chew it carelessly. “because, you idiot, amortentia is a love potion. the most powerful love potion, actually, and mistletoe berries are known to have properties that cause feelings of fondness and obsession towards a person-“

hyunjin begins fake snoring in the middle of your speech, eyes closed and head laying on your shared lab table. muttering curses under your breath you smack his arm. “you just asked me to explain it! why do you always have to be so... so mean?”

shockingly, he is much quieter after that, only interacting with you to hand over certain ingredients that you need. even professor slughorn eyes your table suspiciously, unaccustomed to the silence replacing your usual quarrels.

it’s not that you and hyunjin genuinely hated each other; it’s quite the opposite, really. you two had been the best of friends during your first year at hogwarts, before your different houses got in the way and hyunjin was swept up by his group of asshole slytherin friends.

you also may or may not have had the biggest crush of all time on him back then, that you refuse to tell any other living soul about.

but since the rift in your old friendship has never mended, it was especially awkward to not only share the same potions class but also to be assigned lab partners for an entire year. needless to say... neither of you have been happy with the circumstances.

by the time you two are finished with the amortentia, you’re quite satisfied with your handiwork. turning to hyunjin, you gesture towards the cauldron. “well? smell it.”

he scoffs. “excuse me?”

your eyes narrow as you glare at his frustratingly beautiful face. “um, earth to hyunjin? the potion smells different to everyone depending on the person they’re in love with. so,” you hold a ladle full of the shimmery liquid up to his face, “if we both smell different things, we’ll know we made it correctly.”

hyunjin stubbornly nods, bending down to sniff at the spoon. immediately, his brows furrow and a confused look falls on his face. “cinnamon. i smell... cinnamon.”

the gum you’d been chewing nearly lodges itself into your throat as you choke. as soon as hyunjin notices and makes the connection in his head he’s shoving the ladle back in your direction. his face is turning red as he awkwardly clears his throat. “why the hell are you looking at me like that? just smell it yourself so we can finish already!”

you step closer to the cauldron and scoop a new, iridescent little puddle into the ladle, taking a sniff of its spiraling vapor. “um... i’m not sure exactly. cedar, or maybe pine?”

before you know it, you’re dropping the ladle on the table as hyunjin grabs your wrist and pulls you into his arms. you land against his chest with a gentle thud, and he lightly presses your face into his neck. you’re about to protest, push him away - when you smell it.

the exact same sharp sweetness from the cauldron, in his hair.

slowly, as if time has frozen, you lean back enough to look into his eyes. he’s already peering down at you, and you find your hands clutching onto his green robes to steady yourself.

your lips are merely centimeters apart when you both murmur,

“pine.”
