This week, I'm reading This Poison Heart by Kalynn Bayron for the @clearursht prompt: a book with gold/silver/bronze on the cover. I'm approaching the halfway point in this and I'm really having a good time. The Secret Garden and Greek mythology elements are really interesting to me and keeping me engaged. This week I'm hoping to finish up The Love Hypothesis and read about half of Women and Other Monsters. The Love Hypothesis is really cute but I am a bit annoyed by their lack of communication. It's probably due to their power dynamic, though and I also feel a little strange about that but it's probably because I work in academia and have for a while. I definitely see why other people love it, though. I'm just in the intro for Women and Other Monsters (reading for @some.obscure.book.club ) but this nonfiction really speaks to some of my research interests so I definitely want to mine the references section for this book to see what types of articles I can find. I'm taking advantage of cooler weather and trying to make an effort to read outside more. I'm reading Ring for @some.obscure.book.club and even though I know the mystery the main character is trying to solve, I'm still super invested. . This semester has been mentally difficult for me. I have zero motivation or will to just do my job - something I've LOVED in the past. I'm so checked out and I feel so guilty about it. I'm looking into other job options so 🤞🤞 . I finished up volumes 4-6 of One Piece and the rest of Dragonball this morning and it was so exciting. . One Piece is a pirate adventure in a fantasy world full of devil fruit and magical abilities. Luffy makes me laugh and I love learning more about Zoro's backstory. I also love seeing Sanji kick a fish-shaped boat. . My plan was to only read Dragonball and not really continue with the series but after that ending, I definitely want to know more about this world. I might not continue right away but I definitely will in the future. I love seeing the art for the fight scenes and laughing at this cute cast of characters. . I've been on a quest to read all of Tiffany D Jackson's books since I first read Monday's Not Coming last year. That thriller had me staring at the wall at 5AM trying to process what just happened and Allegedly is no different. I'm torn about the ending. On the one hand, I like that it wasn't neat in any way and Jackson doesn't shy away from really going there. On the other hand, does it change the messaging? . After sitting on it for a few days, I'm starting to feel a bit more into the ending. It was shocking and risky and at my core, I want that in the books I read. Plus, I need to stop thinking about every plot point as needing to serve the themes from the rest of the story (sorry for the vagueness - don't want to spoil). . What's the last book that surprised you? . I've been wanting to check out Saga but I'm really iffy about sci-fi so I didn't know what to expect. When I found this on the free shelf at work, I snatched it up to read at a later date. During my office hour, I realized I didn't have anything to read so I picked this up and really liked it. The artwork is beautiful and the different character designs were exciting to see. I finished Tender is the Flesh a little while ago for @some.obscure.book.club and I'm still thinking about it. This dystopian world where animals can no longer be consumed so humans take their place is uncomfortable and disturbing in every way. Bazterrica doesn't shy away from detail and really forces the reader to sit in their discomfort. I also found myself emotional a few times, particularly at the end. I was constantly shocked and the stakes kept getting higher. I've been picking up a fair bit of nonfiction lately and I never know how to *review* them but I wanted to spotlight this particular book. Darby saw a gap in the research involving white supremacy and white nationalist groups; there's a lot of talk about the men at the forefront but what about them women? I've always been interested in how people get involved in extremist groups and this books shines a light on that. I was constantly highlighting and stopping to think and talk about what I was reading with others.
