Quinton’s knuckles brushed on the door in the rhythm of a soft knock that alerted Emilia. She yelled come in, her voice muffled from the many layers that divided them. He entered the room, silently shutting the door behind him. The room smelled of tea, which Quinton found unmatching to its bright lilac theme. He sat down on the very edge of her mattress, careful not to cause her any disturbance.
“Hey there, how are you?” He asked softly. She groaned in response and he bit his lip, wincing at the implied tone.
“How bad was it?”
“Very bad.” Her voice was muffled in the plush pillows.
She finally sat up and greeted him, her arms wrapped around herself and her legs tucked under her. She was looking anywhere but him and he noticed. He opens his mouth to speak but she’s faster than him.
“It was right as I had finished my fight simulations.” She sighed. “I entered the weaponry, as I always do, to put the weapons I had used back in their rightful place. That’s when I spotted Gertrude,” her fists balled and she gritted her teeth at the thought of the cyan-haired woman. “completely misusing her spear. I gave her a simple right warning on weapon safety and she dared criticize me for my quote-unquote; lack of leading skills, which, let’s face it, was irrelevant. She was the one throwing her staff on the wall, not me! Defensive ass water-user...”
Emilia continued on with her little rambling, this time mumbling out curses that Quinton struggled to make out. Quinton giggled at her state, hair messy and littered on the mattress, her body curled in a little ball and laying on its side. Emilia gave him the death glare, him shutting it quickly.
“You know,” he inhaled, “you need to cooperate with your teammates – even if you are superior to them. If they feel listened to and understood, they will be more respectful of your decisions and will be more likely to carry out your orders.” He smiled, in hopes of his advice being delivered in a sweeter manner.
Emilia exhaled a bitter sigh. “You should’ve been the head operative a month ago then.” She said, catching the Healer off guard. He patted her thigh and she turned to look at him, his look of confusion being the sign she needed to go into detail. So, the Duskic explained to him that if he’d been in her spot he would’ve done better. He would be more thorough in the search, she said, and he would be able to boost morale, all the while his abilities would decrease the amounts of wounded. Quinton doesn’t like how sincere she sounds and asks why she would think all of that. She pauses and looks away.
“Is it because of...Xeni?” The green one asked. No answer still, but he did notice her shrink.
The only thing that came to the dark-haired woman’s mind was the Duski Tribe army, the one that she had been a soldier for since she was nine. She’d been told she was old enough to give her services, her whole mind, body and life, to be a part of the military and she should be grateful that she even got the chance.
The discipline was harsh, and there was so much to prove to the male soldiers that she was training with. She wanted them to see that she could be more than a housewife and child-bearer and stop harassing her for it, so she adopted their mannerisms, the way they talked and acted in order to drive them away. And surprisingly, it worked.
It took a burden of her shoulders, yes, but that didn’t mean it made the military life any easier. She was now nothing more than a tomboy with still much to prove, this time to her superiors. Training was painful and the so called “orientation” classes absolutely unethical in their teachings. They were preparing them to throw away their bodies as if they were meaningless and teaching them to kill others of their age, just for their family to climb the social ladder and have many more chances to survive.
Childhood? What childhood? Ah, yes, the ruined one and unbearable to think about, that one. The one that only she made bearable, the one she helped her get through and survive – for the most part. Because she was the one to kill her, with no hesitation as well. Her heart started burning, her eye throbbing and she felt like throwing up, yet she didn’t hold back and told the soft-spoken Demigod about her insecurities; her fear of facing something she had hoped was already lost and how biased that makes her. A few tears escape her and he makes a mental note of how this is the first time he’s seen her cry.
“You’re the bravest person I have ever met,” he says, “maybe that’s why I like you so much,” but that she shouldn’t have heard for he whispered under his breath.
Yet she did. She smiled, blushed, looked away, sniffled and then leaned forward to kiss his cheek. He was stunned for a bit, not used to her being affectionate – or anyone else for that matter. He hesitantly goes in for a kiss on the lips, unsure of her reaction, but she meets him in the middle. A sigh escapes his lips and he cups her jaw softly, deepening the kiss. Her plump lips were soft and salty, and her breath tasted of green tea.
When they pulled away to refill their lungs with oxygen, he noticed that more tears were escaping her eyes now than before, which terrified Quinton at first, the brunette thinking he’d done something wrong. He hadn’t, that was simply Emilia’s reaction to feeling a little bit more than tolerated; wanted, she felt wanted. The kiss was so warm to her stomach, it brought her to the edge and now she was a weeping mess.
He was speechless at first then, “It’s okay,” Quinton spoke, attempting to soothe her by rubbing her back in circles, “you’ll be fine. I will guide you, if that’ll help.” He hugged her close to his chest, his tongue filling her ears with sweet compliments and promises that brought a smile to her face and finally soothed her to a dreamless sleep.

Soulmates Alternate Universe Prompts

You live in a world where your soulmate is unable to hurt you, intentionally or otherwise. You are fighting in a war, when one of the enemy’s knives harmlessly glances off you. (x)
Once in every month soulmates get to see from each others’ eyes for 60 seconds until they meet for the first time. It happens unexpectedly and neither of the pair knows when it will happen. One day you see someone you recognize from your soulmate’s eyes. (x)
In your world, you and your soulmate share the same sensations of pain. If you stub your toe, then your soulmate feels the same pain in the same toe. You haven’t met your soulmate yet, but you know they are a major klutz. (x)
Soul mates are real and technology has finally allowed for detection of some peoples “other half" at the speed of light using quantum messaging. When you were tested there was no response, now 10 years later you are called in to let you know a response has just arrived. (x)
When you connect eyes with your soulmate for the first time, your dominant hand’s wrist will start to hurt. You are watching an actor/actress talk about their recent movie when they look at the camera for a split second. Your wrist starts to become irritated. (x)
Every person is connected to their soulmate by an invisible, red string. You are the only one who can see them and the one connected to you is cut and frayed at the end. (x)
In your world, everyone has a almost entirely unique symbol on their wrist, soulmates have the same symbol. Your whole life you’ve been drawing on a symbol with a sharpie to hide the fact you don’t have a soulmate. One day, you meet someone without a symbol, just like you. (x)
Soulmates are real, and connected by luck. If you have a good, lucky day, your soulmate is simultaneously having a terrible one and vice-versa. Your MC is desperate to find their soulmate. (x)
Everybody in the world has a superpower that compliments their soulmates superpower. When together, both their powers increase in strength exponentially. You have the most useless power ever, when one day… (x)
You live in a world where soulmates cannot physically harm each other. You, the Hero, find that, no matter what you do, you cannot harm the Queen of Demons the villain has summoned. (x)
Soul mate’s exist. One day while showering, you’re teleported in a cloud of smoke to another world. You appear before a dark queen who declares her spell worked and you, her soulmate, is finally here. (x)
Just like a normal person you all age. Until you hit 18. You stop aging until you meet your soulmate so you can grow old together. You’ve been killing your soulmates for centuries granting you eternal life.. (x)
Everyone has a “soulmate” that their personality works best together with. These soulmates are determined by the government at age 18. You and your soulmate just met up, and they are nothing like what you were expecting. (x)
Everyone has a soulmate. The name of one’s soulmate appears on their forearm sometime during their teenage years. You finally get yours at the age of 17, but there’s something odd. Instead of one name, there’s two, and they aren’t written in the Latin alphabet or any other known Earthly script. (x)
In the future, romantic attraction is literal: each person is fitted with an electromagnetic bracelet which, they claim, will pull you to your soulmate. It’s the day they turn the magnets on, and you’re waiting. (x)
All prompts were found on Reddit. You can access their original sources by clicking on the linked (x).

Sad things you can do in a book other than killing of a character
Character death is sad, but it also has huge consequences on your plot that can’t be reversed. Not to mention, depending on your genre, character deaths are often reserved for later in the series as a way of telling the reader that things are getting serious.
So, until that moment, here’s a quick list of things you can do to tug at your readers emotions:
1.- Destruction of an item of value. For this to work you’re going to have to set this up early on, it could be a childhood toy they need to sleep at night, a necklace they swear gives them good luck, and old family trinket or any number of things. The important thing is you show just how important it is to the character, make them happy and excited just to talk about it. Later on your character will feel loss and so will the audience.
2.- Arguing. Two characters with a strong bond arguing can be heartbreaking, even if you know the argument is going to resolve itself eventually, going from cuddles and banter to cold looks and the silent treatment, can easily hurt the audience just as much as the characters.
3.- Betrayal. When well done, it’s worst than character death. When you as a reader fall head over heels in love with a character, only for them to betray the rest, it’s heartbreaking, especially if when you read back the foreshadowing was there. It was so obvious yet you were all so blind! As blind as the other characters. Also, unlike character death, they’re still there, there to taunt you with their mere existence.
4.- Failure. We have probably all felt that emptiness, that feeling as the world crumbles around us, haplessness, when we failed an exam in school or just couldn’t get the house clean in time for that visit. Take that feeling and reflect it into your characters, it doesn’t have to be an exam, it can be anything, a task they’re parents asked them to do and they tried their best, a mission, anything. Just let them fail and feel the world crumble.
5.- Being forced to stay behind. Following from point four, if a character is not good enough they can be left behind, perhaps it comes from a place of love, an attempt to protect them from enemies too strong, yet it still hurts. Perhaps they haven’t failed, perhaps they are left behind for another reason, because they are “too valuable”, or because they’ll be more useful back home. Either way, watching those close to you go of to fight for what you believe in, without you, can be painful.
6.- Finding out something they believed in was a lie. It can be something relatively insignificant, an assumption they never bothered to question. Or something world shattering. Allow me to offer up an example with an unimportant spoiler from my second book (it’s not even out yet but oh well): in this book, while talking about some law, Henry realises his daughter believes he and her mother were married. This is an assumption Itazu made and never questioned. It affects nothing, nothing changes, yet finding out her mother and her father were not the happy married couple she’d always pictured, it’s painful.
This could also be something huge, finding out you’re adopted for example.
7.- History. Oh, history, how depressing it can be. And if you have a fantasy world you have many opportunities to go into this. From slaughters to slavery, finding out how society got to where it is, the base on which it is built. Well, it’s pretty depressing. Obviously be careful how much inspiration you take from real world history and always be respectful and do your research!
8.- Scarring. An injury can be painful, it can be scary. And depending on what caused it, leave you with traumatising memories. Now add to that a physical visible reminder on your skin you can never remove. Well, that can be pretty horrible. Imagine the scar came from a battle the protagonist longs to forget, but can’t because every night before going to sleep they can’t help but glance at their arm where the nasty scars forever lies.
As usual,  check out my book, stories I’ve written plus other social medias: here.
This another post I could probably do a part two on someday. Can you think of any books where any of these are done effectively? Do any of these happen in your owns book? Please tell me! I love hearing from you all.

Character mannerisms to consider!
Mannerisms, in this case, are the little details that are unique to each character of your story! These are perfect ways help the reader know more about your character’s personality without needing to read through multiple sentences of description or dialogue. Mannerisms also become incredibly useful when you need to convey things like social status, upbringing, mental health status and how they interact with the world/people around them.
There are hundreds of unique ways to use mannerisms, for example linking one character to another despite their lack of interaction in the story. The dialogue and description might point to Character A having never met Character B, but they might share the same mannerisms, which would hint to some kind of past link between the pair.
How much space do they take up? Do they spread out when they sit or stay curled-up? Do they flail their arms to gesture? Do they speak loudly or quietly? Who listens when they speak up? Do they make a sound when they move?
How does your character sleep? What position? Do they sleep restlessly or soundly? Do they prefer covers, or do they sleep without?
How does your character greet people? Are they welcoming or reserved? How genuine are they being?
How much do they mirror others? Do they mirror everyone? (Mirroring is a subconscious behaviour where two+ people in a conversation will copy one another’s body language. This usually means there is a connection of some kind being made. Lack of / exaggerated mirroring might indicate towards a mental disorder or other (ex: personality disorder, neurodiversity, anxiety etc)
Which part of their body is the most expressive? Does your character use their hands a lot or do they tuck them away? Do they need movement to ground themselves (swaying, rocking, fidgetting…)?
Who would your character turn to in a group of people for comfort? Would they acknowledge that person more? Would they engage in a conversation with only them or would they just glance their way?
Do they have a re-occuring habit to indicate a mood? Do they crack their knuckles when excited? Do they bite their lip ring when angry? Do they look at their hands when sad?
How do they gesture? Do they speak with their hands? Do they point, nod or use their eyes to show something? Which movements are conscious, and which aren't?
Do they have a comfort item or person? Is there something they always think of? Is there something they hold with care? How much do they value that thing more than others?
How would they react to another person’s misfortune? Would their eyes light up? Would their heart hurt? How genuine would they feel? How genuine would they act?
Is there anything that makes them OOC (out of character)? (This is a good thing! One tiny OOC aspect can make a huge impact on that character) Perhaps they’re cruel but love cats? Perhaps they’re known for being the kindest but smile when they think of something tragic? How often do they act strangely? Do they do it in front of anyone? Do their actions indicate this or solely their thoughts?
I hope this helps you develop your characters! If you have anything to add, feel free to do so!

it is a conglomeration of nonsensical sensibilities that simply make no sense.
it is a mess, most of the time. a mix up and a mash up and a twisty-top topsy-turvy curve-n-swerve of a head rush of a headache of absolutely nothing and everything at once. i am underwater and i am flying and i am both and i am neither but i am certain i am not on the ground anymore, i am not standing, i am not on my feet and i do not remember the sensation of my own weight being held down by gravity the way that it is supposed to, the way that everyone else seems to be. i am adrift.
i am a balloon on a string that’s tied in a loopy bow on my own wrist, far off and away and always seemingly a second or two behind everyone else. i am an anomaly of a thing that is solid and tangible and see through and ghostly. i am not my reflection and my reflection is not me and i am exactly who i say i am and not who i think i should be and not what you think you see and exactly who you hear when i speak and nothing yet everything yet absolute vacancy. i am a dream of a nightmare of a memory of a fear of a trauma of a hope of a forgotten moment caught in suspended time dropped like a ceramic plate shattered on the floor with the remnants of what i remember reflected on the shards scattered around me.
it is not truthful. it is the most honest i have ever been. i am unrealistic and falsified and rubber skin and glass eyes. i am optimistic and justified and tattooed ink and blue skies.
i am not real. i am here. this is a dream. i am not asleep. the blur of my vision is not just at the fault of bad eyesight but also at the fault of a world gone out of focus and far away. the muffled sound reminds me of being underwater despite the knowledge that i am breathing.
even the oxygen in my lungs feels out of place.

god id love to hear more abt your rouxls nightmare head cannons - THAT SOUNDS SO WERID BUT i just think swatch comforting them would be really sweet ;—;
oh jeez I didn't think anyone would want to hear abt that since it's just my personal hcs for Rouxls bc I think about him. a little too much GKNHKGL and made my own little. background thing since we don't rlyyy know too much abt Card Kingdom before everything sooo...anyways...
I'm glad you're interested tho! These hcs are. kind of personal bc some are based on what I actually experience so ghmgkhg
Has the rly vivid realistic type of nightmares, the ones you can't tell are actually a dream until you wake up and even then you STILL can't tell until you check literally everything and calm down. so very dereality-centric. oof
tends to be in a panic when he wakes up from particularly nasty ones, rly just depends on the severity of the dream if he's full blown panic attack or just general uncomfortableness w/it
has gotten so used to it by this point "the not as bad ones" don't bother him much anymore which is kind of...fucked up! just tend to leave a bad taste in his mouth and bad feelings and not wanting to go back to sleep but generally ok
doesn't get much sleep bc of this actually. tends to wake up middle of the night and doesn't rly fall back asleep very well
this is why he doesn't rly like mornings. lol (at least that's my hc anyways, he doesn't have the vibes of a morning person but still gets up early anyways cuz he's already been awake for so long he can't Sit There anymore)
has prolly woken up Swatch in the middle of the night way more than once w/this (it's. ok tho they understand and have gotten rly good at calming Rouxls down and reassuring Yes it was Just a Dream it did not Actually Happen and rationalizing it)
prolly sleeps with a lot of pillows. idk im just talking abt sleep and wanted to include this. mans comfy at least. prolly holds one to b able to fall asleep GKNHGL grounding </3 (pillow eventually swaps out to b Swatch but u know)

Hero laid on the ground, covering their ears as the bomb went off. The explosion was loud since they were nearby, making their ears ring.. Before it went dead silent.
Confused, they snapped their fingers as to check. They did it again and realised they lost their hearing. Their eardrums must've exploded from the noise, since blood was dripping out of their ears. They sat there as the reality of them being deaf now sunk in, their eyes swelling with tears as they started to cry. No no no no- this can't be happening right? This must be a bad dream right? Right??? oh god it isn't a dream isn't it, it's real.

the way that I describe (my experience of) depersonalization derealization disorder is through vision. Imagine that you're blind, but that by wearing a pair of glasses and seeing through the glass you can see. With the glasses on, effectively it's exactly the same as not having to wear the glasses in the first place. But, if you've ever worn glasses, you surely realize that at all times you can see the edges of your glasses and beyond them, where the world is obscured by the plastic or fuzzy without the support. What happens to me is that—at times—I am able to see that the world only appears through my metaphorical glasses and at the same time I can see that I am wearing the glasses because I can see outside them.
this is quite the metaphor, but it's the best I've got to get an accurate description to someone who doesn't experience it.

Scott was losing his sense of self.
He could feel it.
Every time he respawned as a new creature, or 'Origin' as the others called it, he forgot more of his life while, well, alive.
While a moth, he had felt calm.
The strangest thing about it was the fact that normal food made him sick.
All he could eat was leather, and it tasted good.
All throughout his time as a moth, he could remember most of his life as king of Rivendell, though he did forgot the smaller things.
For example, he couldn't for the life of him remember what the last thing he built there was.
Another strange thing about the server was the familiar faces.
It hurt his heart to see Jimmy again, though the thornling didn't seem to remember him.
There were people call Gem and Fwhip, who looked nearly identical to Scott's friends (were they his friends? he couldn't quite remember) on Empires.
They were different though. The two weren't siblings, in fact their first Origins were mortal (?) enemies, with Fwip as an Ilusioner and Gem as a Villager.
There was also the case of Joel and Lizzie.
While Scott knew that Joel didn't die, (don't ask how, he doesn't know either) he was never sure what happened to Lizzie.
He had been told that Lizzie had forgotten herself, so there really was no way of knowing of this was the same personas the Ocean Queen.
When Scott had died after foolishly not retreating the Nether, he had forgotten if he really was an elf when he was alive.
He knew his brother was a demon, so maybe he was as well?
He didn't know.
He certainly felt like it fit.
He didn't understand why he had been so kind to people.
Being a vampire was fun, though he didn't like not being able to go into the sun.
When Shubble had recruited him to her little group of villains, he had felt strange about it, but brushed the feeling off.
He didn't feel bad for killing Angel Sausage, which was probably because they weren't on the best terms in Empires.
When the group had gone to Jimmy's to mess with him, Scott was hesitant to do anything.
He ignored that feeling.

You are an NPC in a simulator/strategy game. You have long heard of tales of disembodied voices, which randomly bring prosperity or doom. After several years, you hear the fated voice, “hey guys, it’s Josh, and welcome back to Let’s Game it out.”

Actually
The question I get the most is how I write characters that feel like real people.
Generally when I’m designing a human being, I deconstruct them into 7 major categories:
1. Primary Drive 2. Fear: Major and Secondary 3. Physical Desires 4. Style of self expression 5. How they express affection 6. What controls them (what they are weak for) 7. What part of them will change.
1. Primary Drive: This is generally related to the plot. What are their plot related goals? How are they pulling the plot forward? how do they make decisions? What do they think they’re doing and how do they justify doing it. 2. Fear: First, what is their deep fear? Abandonment? being consumed by power? etc. Second: tiny fears. Spiders. someone licking their neck. Small things that bother them. At least 4. 3. Physical desires. How they feel about touch. What is their perceived sexual/romantic orientation. Do their physical desires match up with their psychological desires.
4. Style of self expression: How they talk. Are they shy? Do they like to joke around and if so, how? Are they anxious or confident internally and how do they express that externally. What do words mean to them? More or less than actions? Does their socioeconomic background affect the way they present themselves socially?  5. How they express affection: Do they express affection through actions or words. Is expressing affection easy for them or not. How quickly do they open up to someone they like. Does their affection match up with their physical desires. how does the way they show their friends that they love them differ from how they show a potential love interest that they love them. is affection something they struggle with?
6. What controls them (what they are weak for): what are they almost entirely helpless against. What is something that influences them regardless of their own moral code. What– if driven to the end of the wire— would they reject sacrificing. What/who would they cut off their own finger for.  What would they kill for, if pushed. What makes them want to curl up and never go outside again from pain. What makes them sink to their knees from weakness or relief. What would make them weep tears of joy regardless where they were and who they were in front of.
7. WHAT PART OF THEM WILL CHANGE: people develop over time. At least two of the above six categories will be altered by the storyline–either to an extreme or whittled down to nothing. When a person experiences trauma, their primary fear may change, or how they express affection may change, etc. By the time your book is over, they should have developed. And its important to decide which parts of them will be the ones that slowly get altered so you can work on monitoring it as you write. making it congruent with the plot instead of just a reaction to the plot.
That’s it.
But most of all, you have to treat this like you’re developing a human being. Not a “character” a living breathing person. When you talk, you use their voice. If you want them to say something and it doesn’t seem like (based on the seven characteristics above) that they would say it, what would they say instead?
If they must do something that’s forced by the plot, that they wouldn’t do based on their seven options, they can still do the thing, but how would they feel internally about doing it?
How do their seven characteristics meet/ meld with someone else’s seven and how will they change each other?
Once you can come up with all the answers to all of these questions, you begin to know your character like you’d know one of your friends. When you can place them in any AU and know how they would react.
They start to breathe.
