Visible Mending

Introduction:

Visible mending is a decorative way to fix up an item. Instead of trying to make your mend as invisible as possible, the idea is to make it part of the garment's design.

Visual mending is not a single technique: it's more of a mindset. If you've got an item you love, it deserves to be mended, and if you're going to put that love into stitches, why not show them off?

That being said, there are some specific techniques that are popular with visible menders. Let's take a look!

Sashiko:

Sashiko is a type of traditional Japanese embroidery that is used to both decorate and reinforce fabric. In visible mending, sashiko is often used to cover up holes with patches or to reinforce thinning fabric. This technique uses a variation on the running stitch.

Embroidery:

Regular embroidery is also a popular technique to accentuate your mends. Check out my embroidery 101 post to learn how to get started. You can embroider patches, or use embroidery to hide or accentuate any stitches you've made to fix holes. Embroidery's also a great way to cover up stains.

Patches:

There are many ways to add patches to a garment. My tutorial on patches is a good place to start if you want to make custom-shaped patches to sew on top of your fabric. You can also sew your patch on the inside of your garment and have it peek out from beneath the hole you're trying to fix. Fun ideas for this are lace or superheroes.

Darning:

Darning is a technique used to repair holes in fabric by using running stitches to weave extra fabric over the hole as to fill it up again. While traditionally darning is done in an invisible way by using the same colour of thread as your fabric, you can also use contrasting colours to accentuate your fix. Conclusion:

Visible mending is a creative way to fix up your clothes and give them some personality at the same time.

You should be proud of the fact that you took the time and learned the necessary skills needed to mend your clothes! Show off what you did!

A fun side effect of wearing these obvious mends is that people will notice them. They'll remember your fixes the next time they're faced with a hole in their wardrobe, and it will make them more likely to try it for themselves.

Ladybug: (Flattered) Look, she may be an okay designer but she won't be making jackets for us for free.

Chat noir: First of all. You meant AMAZING Designer Second, I am totally going to commission her for them. I aint some jerk that would ask her to do it without paying I am going to drop serious coin on them. Plus think of the attention her designs will get once we start wearing them.

Carapace: Dude, that would be so sick.

Ladybug:... Fine you can go talk to her about it.

Chat noir: I am heading there now!

Ladybug: Chat noir! The akuma!

Chat noir: Oh right.

Here are the shots I did for the @mlreanimatecollab! (Full episode available to watch here on YouTube and Vimeo)

The Ladynoir animation was first one I did. Now that I have a little more experience I can see tons of mistakes in the shot. But in spite of that, I’m still pretty happy with it, especially the lip syncing and facial expressions. 😚

The second animation I did was of Adrien signing his autograph. Drawing hands is hard, but I somehow survived animating them! Also I wanted to poke fun at the superheroes/secret identity trope. XD

The third one I did was the Max/Kim one. I hate drawing Max’s flat top hair, it always looks terrible when I try, so I gave him the hair he had in the Dark Cupid chapter of WDDM. This was also the first of my animations where I tried adding some shading. Also I may or may not have added some secret Max blushing, huhuhuhu ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The last one is Chat “waking up” from Dark Cupid’s spell. I really enjoyed making this one, even though his hair is always hard to draw. I loved making his various facial expressions and the effect of the black lipstick fading away :D

This project was such a neat experience, I learned a ton and discovered how much I enjoy animating! I’m sure I’ll be experimenting more with animation in the future! :D

Wow! It’s birthday’s season XD

This BGC comic is a gift for CamossDarkfly from our mutual friend ShevronthePanther, who asked me to draw it for the cougar’s birthday (which is today XD). I take profit of the occasion to wish, once again, a very good birthday to Camoss, who is an awesome person.

Shevron’s idea was to create a nice lioness OC, called Zira Pawson, and to introduce it to Camoss in this little comic, so the cougar could use her in the future for other arts, as a friend… or maybe more. That being said, not Shev nor me knew that Camoss already had a ship with an OC created by ReaderNo31142, called Sophia Hill :D

I think that the comic is still funny and cute, and it was the right opportunity for me to draw Camoss’s zoona for the first time, which is great.

Wow… Alice Kirabito AGAIN?! And this time in her Yurei costume? Well, yes, at that time (some months ago, i’m very slow at posting all these arts on my favourites sharing platforms), i’ve got two commissions including my assassin white-bunny OC, and i was pretty honored.

This art has been commissioned by SmokeTrailPrime in some sad circumstances. At that time, Take a Stand - The Broken Mirror, the fanfiction written by my dear friend, the very talented Crewefow (and if you want to read it, here is a link : https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12973009/1/Take-A-Stand-The-Broken-Mirror*), was still being published (he finished the fic recently), and in the story was introduced the original character of Clara Bloom, a she-wolf with a particular sexual orientation (i don’t want to spoil). And sadly, due to that, Crewefox had to deal with a lot of hate and homophobic comments. To comfort him a little, and show him the support of his community through an illustration, SmokeTrailPrime asked me to draw this art, showing his character Arthur Knight protecting Clara with the help of Alice. It turned out later in the story that Clara was more than able to protect herself, but I prefer to let you read the fic to discover that by yourself.

Wow, i wrote a lot to contextualise the art, sorry for that… That being said, a lot of people don’t read the descriptions anyway, so whatever!

I get messages like this one every now and then. I understand if you don’t do something, you don’t really know what goes into it, so.. sure!~ Step one. Buy all the above. (Well, I mean, it doesn’t have to be that exact stuff, but you asked what I used, so there you go). Step two. Learn to sew. Learn to digitize. Digitize your embroidery. Test. Test again. Test again. Make a bear pattern. Tweak. Make another. Tweak. Make another. And anotherrrr. And on, and on, and on.. (seriously, see the prototyping bear pile photo above).  Embroider design. Cut pieces. Sew pieces. Stuff. Assemble. Add hand stitched elements.  So all that = Cap bear. The above is what I used/you need and the cost of making a Cap bear, starting from scratch. I’m sorry you think I’m charging too much for my work. I hope you find making one yourself more to your budget.
