It is believed that the prototype of this kind of flask was originally made from water buffalo horn, which was soaked in water and then bent to form the required shape, which resembled a nautilus shell. Water buffalo horn flasks can be can be found in Mughal paintings since the early sixteenth century. Nautilus shell-shaped powder flasks that were actually made of shell, like this example, were produced much later. Info from @floridafruitfest: "Pineberry is an albino strawberry cultivar with a pineapple-like flavor, white coloring, and red seeds. Pineberry is based on the original strawberry hybrids that arose in cultivation in Europe, with recent selective breeding to improve the plants. It is a hybrid of Fragaria chiloensis, originating in South America, and Fragaria virginiana, originating in North America, the same parentage as the garden strawberry Fragaria × ananassa. A pineberry is smaller than a common strawberry. When ripe, it is almost completely white, but with red "seeds" (achenes). The plant is disease resistant, but is not very profitable, due to small-scale farming, small berry size and low yield. Pineberries are available in the spring and summer." This is easily one of the coolest jackets we've ever seen. The terrifying wizard demons riding those golden waves are none other than the elder shinto Gods, Fujin and Raijin. Fujin is the green guy on the bottom right. He's all about wind and carries it around in that cloth bag thing he's whipping around. Raijin is the pale guy in the top left. The other day we learned about the huge street market in Otavalo, Ecuador called the Plaza de los Ponchos. The more photos we saw of it, the more we saw this weird, brightly colored mask everywhere. We needed to know more, so after more searching we learned that these masks depict the "huma devil", also known as the "diabluma" or "haya huma". The devil stuff is just because of catholic influence, but in the indigenous communities of the Pichincha and Imbabura provinces of northern Ecuador, haya refers to the light and dark powers of nature and huma means head. Ultimately, the huma devil or haya huma is connected with leadership and considered a spiritual guide who bestows the power of nature. As for the masks, they seem to cost around $5, which means we'll be buying plenty whenever we go to Ecuador. Iori Tomita has gained international recognition in only a few short years for his work, which he calls new world specimens. Originally a fisherman in the Iwate prefecture of Northeast Japan, Iori began to experiment with an old biological staining method known as diaphonization after seeing a university lecture when he was 19 years old. A decade later, Iori has perfected this technique and now exhibits his work throughout the country. Unfortunately for most of us, Tomita doesn't sell or ship his work outside of Japan, but that's exactly what we're here to help with! We obtained, photographed, and sold this specimen by Tomita for $280 back in 2015 when we were testing people's interests with an online store.
