How to Get Chased by Giant Tortoises in Africa
TIA=This is Africa, our slang of the trip with a shrug of the shoulders or a down of a shot :)
Here’s an account of my 11th day on my 40 day East Africa trip.
“Day 11
Woke up to the rain and a beautiful sunrise
One of the best days of my life.  Went on a nonchalant tour of Prison Island which houses all the giant tortoises, ranging from 0 to 192 years.  We took a boat with a young kid wearing an ‘I<3 KUSH’ hat, no life jackets, splashing water but it was the most beautiful cerulean blue I’ve ever seen.
It was about half hour trip to the island which housed a lovely hotel with turtle keys and a prison/hospital and peacocks which I made a nice replicative noise at.  It was the New Zealander couple, the Canadian couple, and us...so small and nice.
AND the tortoises were SO FUN!!!! I loved them all, and we’re best friends with them.  There were like a hundred babies in a cage- hard to see and adults kept trying to eat my tennis shoes because they’re yellow/green like lettuce that they eat- it was a riot.  I’m surprised I didn’t get bit to shit.  But I made great friends with a lonely one on the far side.  He loved me so much.  I spent a lot of one on one and then he watched me wherever I would go–I tortoise whispered!
We got to touch and hug all the turtles and feed them, it was SUPER amazing.  We returned on the boat and left for the Northern beaches, where you don’t have to dress Muslim conservative.  So thank goodness because it was SO HOT!  Then after we got some lunch at the beautiful hotel beach bar, we went to a turtle refuge place to swim with sea turtles for about 1.5 hours.  Obvi, Mara was in heaven.  I wore a snorkel mask for the 1st time, I hate it but sort of got the hang of it, but swimming with the turtles and fish was SO cool, one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, at the "natural pond".  It was just unbelievable, they’re so beautiful and majestic under the water.  I felt like I was on the EAC with CRUSH and the little one from Finding Nemo.  So neat.  And that was just 4 of us: Kate, Whitney and us…so amazing.
Then we got back and everyone from the group, even Susan (19 of us) went to a coolio-chair-neon-light-up-fancy beach front restaurant.  Mara and I split an alfredo dish that was pretty good, and I sat by all the people I actually like, Kate, Justin, Nicky, Olivier, Mara and the NZ couple.  I think I’ve only struggled with not liking the others because we were in such close quarters with no escape for 10 days no break.  So Zanzibar has been really nice, to choose and explore.  I’m happy with our decisions so far.  My turtle day and enjoying some distant beach club music.  Quite nice.  Couldn’t ask for a more picturesque vacay spot, so glad we aren’t camping for a few nights, just to restore energy.  I just wish I could restore and talk to G for more than one minute kinda on skype.  I wish he was here because it’s so romantic.  Also, I want Jesse to have his honeymoon here.  It’d be perfect.  He has to do it!!
I would buy him all the turtle stuff, but they didn’t have any souvenir shops all day at either place which seems crazy to me, but I’m so American.  Tomorrow I’m going snorkeling with Nicky and a few others and then on a sunset cruise which seems super touristy and cheesy, but it’ll be our last night with Nicky and the Canadians :( I hope we get to dance on the boat.  I’ve been dancing a little alone on our balcony but I’ve got more urge and there’s night guards walking around every 5 minutes.  I’m sure he’d catch me :) I did dance with Allana and an African waiter at our restaurant, and it was awesome and picturesque.  I love every moment, especially this one.  What a day!!

One of the young choreographers this year was brave enough to take on the concept of "the wall" Her mother crossed the border when she was 16 in the 90s and she (the choreographer) is 16 now. Her piece was developed in 8 sessions of 3 hours each. It describes her mothers journey and the choreographer's impression of the current immigration constrains. I can't watch it without crying, and I can't even explain to her how important it is. For her. For her mother. For the community. For the arts. For the society we are currently in. For the world. I hope she continues to develop this work because it could be performed at a professional level anywhere. And this talent and bravery coming from a 16 year old.... Is miraculous. If you are available tomorrow (Sunday) at 3pm....you shouldn't miss this incredible opportunity to see #youth in LA sharing their voice. @youngchoreoproj #youngchoreographersproject (at MiMoDa Studio)

Cape Town and Food Poisoning/I swear I don’t have Ebola
Here is an account of my last days of my 39 day trip of East and South Africa...and let me preface this with...it’s a little dramatic!!!
Day 36, October 17th, 2014
Woke up in silence except for the wind and ocean waves.  Can’t believe I’m in a swanky house on Table Mountain (Cape Town).  It’s so beautiful here and I am so FUCK BLESSED to be here.  I made us make hot chocolate this morning since it’s “free with room” and I can save my Rand for other things.  And the old lady, Maria, (our host) offered to drive us to town so we don’t have to walk 34 minutes.  So yay.  I hope our day continues on splendidly!  I’m just feeling lucky to be here for a full day with a nice place to sleep. <3
...
And what I full day it was! We got breakfast (a delicious muffin (which I literally WILL NEVER FORGET, I think about it all the time, ask Mara)) at Kauai, hung out, saw a cool German Shepherd with a huge boner, stole some beach shells and sand, went to Pick n Pay and got some crisps and candy.  Then we met our guide after about 15 minutes at this info/hotel.  Frizo, F-R-I-ZO.  Very nice, remembered all ten tourists’ names, very informative.  And I loved our group, everyone was super nice, a bit older but so helpful.  We actually seemed most knowledged on Africa though which was cool.  Never thought I’d feel experienced at traveling East Africa.
We went on a seal island tour at Haut Bay.  So awesome, and smelly, but I <3 them all, and there was a band playing outside the boat with a banjo! and a guy feeding seals out of his MOUTH.
We went along the coast to the SUPER windy Cape of Good Hope to take quick photos, then off to Cape Point to climb to the lighthouse after eating lunch where a THOUSAND birds attacked us.  And at the top it was SUPER DUPER windy!!  Bought some curios...continued on to Penguin Colony at Boulders Bay.  So CUTE, I love ALL the penguins.  We stole sand (even though we were definitely not supposed to) and <3.
We got more curios.  And went for a very short time to the botanical gardens (30 min) so barely scratched that, but fun, relaxing.  We then got nicely dropped off at Victoria’s Wharf which we were confused about where we were going to see what was there, but we went on the mall, grabbed some curios, sat to eat cake, and figured it out.  It was much like San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.  We enjoyed shops, amazing music by this South African band I actually bought a CD off of because they were SO good (don’t worry I’m not that old, but all they had were cds and even though I didn’t have a cd player at the time (still don’t) I had to have this music!!)  We then eventually took a taxi to Long Street because we just had to do it all! And I’m glad we did because our taxi guy, Rodney was just like Rajit from How I Met Your Mother, and SO awesome!  We got out at stumbled into the MOST AWESOME MAMA AFRICA’S BAR AND RESTAURANT. We didn’t have a “rez” but there were two seats at the bar...so we listened to some awesome live music and ate, I got curry?? who am I? and it was great.  We each got fancy drinks.  Mara got chicken wings.  We danced, the place was all of Africa in one, the best vibe I’ve had.  The perfect place to be on our last night in Africa, emotional but wonderful.  We both fell in love with the bucket-hat-bartender; he was dancin smooth through all his duties.  I loved him.  Two crazy guys fell in love with us though, not the good kind; one sweaty band guy for Mara and one money-talker for me...neither of which I would have felt comfortable with alone.  Nonetheless, it was an incredible fun evening dancing and being in Mama Africas on Long Street in Cape Town, South Africa after a 36 day journey on our 25th year.  I’ll never forget.  We’ll always have Africa.  The people.  The experience.  The images, smells, feelings, sounds, tastes, the love. <3
Day 37
We’re sitting on the porch of our very Malibu air bnb, looking at the Atlantic Ocean.  We had breakfast with Ali, who is best friends with one of the sons of the old couple we stayed with.  We had little quiche pie things and some delicious tea from Kenya.  We all chatted about governments, monsanto, etc, since Ali works in the UN and is a biology scientist.  The psuedo Mom and Dad are so sweet and funny; the perfect old couple <3 from Croatia.
Very sweetly, Ali took us to the Civic Center to catch an airport bus, in his MASERATI!! (Praise hands emoji) So fun! I feel like we got so much of Cape Town, even though we weren’t technically there very long.  Mara loves Ali, obviously.  At the bus station, there was a crazy sweaty guy trying to cut us in line and the AWESOME bus people were like, “NO, they’re first!” It was awesome.  We caught a bus, airport was smooth.  Curio shopped and had lunch.  Our flight, we basically just watched four movies and didn’t sleep at all which was stupid but we haven’t watched movies in a month!! And it’s been great.  I hate screens.
So we breezed through Dubai airport, got some Costa chai, and found Becs and Ryan right away who I love because they were totes game to explore Dubai from 2AM-6AM!  (Though every taxi driver thought we were crazy.) It was kinda fun to see all the sights with no one out...like a private tour.  Burj Khalifa, Gold Market, Marina...it was all gorgeous.  But Dubai is a weird city.  My 1st real Muslim predominant, the men don’t address women, at all, and I hate it.  So weird to me. I get it. But I disagree with it.  We started out actually eating at this sketchy restaurant, which made me quite sick in the next few hours.  So by the time we went back to Ryan and Bec’s hotel, I had diarrhea and by the cab ride to the airport, I had to drop a $7 tip while I jumped out of the car to dizzy vomit into a street full of taxis which was awkward and miserable.  Then I just had extreme fear because I came from Africa and with the Ebola outbreak, they aren’t letting sick people or feverish people on planes, so I had to hope no one noticed enough to tell on me!  I went to the bathroom for more ... sickness, and tried to compose myself before going through passport control.
It’s 6AM, I just vomited lentil soup in the parking lot, I’ve been awake since 7AM the previous day, I’m pale as a mofo, the bags under my eyes are black and I have to make sure they don’t notice I’ve been to Kenya and Cape Town (the hubs of Africa).  So I muster all I can to be a person, get in the WRONG line because it’s taking forever, I’m getting cold sweats again and thinking about how thoroughly this guy seems to be checking...so after five minutes, I pick a different line and thank God because it was so easy...didn’t even look through it.  And I’m on my way, looking for tums, then I have no water, ...walking aimlessly to find the ONE water fountain exhausted and seeing stars, then I go sleep on the floor of my gate.  They check passports two more times but at this point, I’m too exhausted to care and I feel like shit.  The whole thing is a blur.  I was just terrified and paranoid about being quarantined.  I probably would have been in Africa.  Thank Fuck it didn’t happen there.  And now I’m on my last plane, slept a bit, skipped a meal, listening to the Smiths, and hoping the next ten hours goes quick so I can be in my boyfriend (at the time)’s arms, as disgusting and sick as I am.
That’s that.

Once upon a time, I made up a day long romance with a Zanzibarian (in my head like most of my romances 😒) and I wrote about it in my journal blog if anyone has any interest in a silly #travelromance story ;) On that lovely day, I spent 8 hours on a very small wooden boat called the "cappuccino" and I got a wicked sunburn...but I also got this picture which is one of my favorites. #cheerstolove https://apeaceofthesun.tumblr.com/post/158896756693/jua-le-na-penda-mimi-sana-the-sun-loves-me-too (at Zanzibar, Tanzania)

Ju’a le na penda mimi sana The Sun Loves Me Too Much A Zanzibar Thrill
Here is a beautiful account of one of my favorite days on my Africa trip.  Taking place on Zanzibar waters,
“Day 12 9/25/14
I just had the freaking time of my life on a boat (called the Cappuccino) for eight hours with like five super hott Africans taking us to snorkel.  We didn’t talk at all in the beginning, but after lunch I bridged the gap (GO ME, FFS) and started talking to them asking about Swahili and one of them, Ali, he had no qualms, just sat and started teaching me all kinds of phrases.  ‘My name is… Tomorrow I’m going to…’ All kinds of stuff and I can’t believe I didn’t have a pen–but he told me they’re doing the sunset cruise too! So I can bring a pen and journal and “YAYYYYY.  (I recall him literally telling me to come back and bring a pen, lol).  They were so funny and I can’t even describe my school girl happiness of teaching them “cool as a cucumber” and “see ya later aligator” and “macho”… it was the most fun I’ve had yet with people here and not creepy at all.  It was so great.  Ali-the main guy told me our names are the same.  And a girl version in Swahili is Aliue or I would pronounce it Alliay.  He said I should name my baby that, how cute.  I love Swahili and also all of us got super burnt.  So he taught me how to say, Ju’a le na penda mimi sana or “the sun loves me too much” which is necessary in my life, (but never more than that day…wickedest sunburn of my life, but sooooo worth it)
I’m totally in love with my day!!
That day continued: went on the sunset tour with everyone and brought my notebook and pen for Ali to help me.  We just sat next to each other while I drank and he wrote me all kinds of swahili– it was so fun but I hadn’t really eaten and I got really drunk.  Ali kept making sure I had more drinks.  He was exactly my type though–not a peacock, a sexy quiet sweetheart and he will probably forever be my African love.  I couldn’t thank him enough for helping me to learn…way better than a tape or film.  Real Zanzibarian.  My dad would be so proud.
So anyway, I was super drunk when we got off the boat, maybe more drunk than I’ve ever been because I couldn’t even pretend to hide it like I usually can.  (Thanks sunburn and being on a boat ALL day).  I was stumbling all over and teaching Alana dances about alligators turning into giraffes lol like three year olds and messing around with everyone.  It was like 7:30 too…and EVERY BODY was drunk.  I loved Zanzibar, I wish I could stay here forever!
In the morning, we went down for breakfast and I swear in the distance, I saw Ali on the beach.  Maybe it was my romantic imagination, or maybe my life is as serendipitous as I think it is, but by the time I ate a few potatoes, and in the rain walked down the beach, there was no one there.
I wish I could have seen him one more time to say goodbye not drunk, and thank him for all of the help.  He really taught me so well and patiently and I just loved him.  It’s kinda stupid the feelings I felt.  But it’s over now, and I’ll always have my African Sweetheart in Zanzibar.  …
