I really liked how the scene transitioned here, we see Jimsa and Zaravant (a duo) set off to follow a trail of dead Lusitanians, and then immediately we see Team Hilmes soldiers spotting a duo of riders outside their walls, and we don't see who it is right away. But of course it's revealed shortly after, but I just really love how the scene transitioned here.

He is indeed too good to let die :(

The guilt, man. The guilt. Not being able to protect the capital. Serving with the man who's allied to the forces that brought it down because he believed. Not having the faith he had in Hilmes returned. He's in a rough spot, and probably contemplating his worth. Somebody please hug the guy.

Man I feel bad for Tahamenay and Badakshan. Also, Andragoras is taking none of anyone's feelings seriously, huh. He doesn't care.

And then we never see Narsus and Merlaine interact afterwards. Bummer :(

Narsus' schemes helping them even now. Remember that the stint Kishward and Isfan pulled? Narsus' plan, as the former so admitted. I wonder if he foresaw this. I wonder if he gave Kishward those tactics knowing it will help obscure Team Arslan's numbers down the line? It could very well be a coincidence but knowing Narsus the “Mary Tzu” as some older fans have called, I wouldn't put it past him to have planned so far ahead.

Arslan Senki Reread

Arslan is such a good bean. If he did have the raw power backing him to railroad the conflict into a mediation, I wonder what the result would've been.

I think it's more than just Arslan lacking the power, I don't see Andragoras and Hilmes accepting to lay their hands away from each other. Worst case scenario, Arslan dies in the middle anyways bc Assassination™. Both Narsus and Daryun are right here, Arslan himself lacks power, but also at this point neither Hilmes nor Andragoras are capable of backing off.

Farangis' dialogue here is making me feel things, dammit. Do what you can. Do what's in your power. (It's very relevant to my Wolfpack AU.)

Farangis comforting/gently advising Arslan, and then steps up to keep the project on track. She makes for a good sister-mentor figure. I love Narsus and Farangis' dynamic, her atrocious love advice aside.

I see Alfarīd as someone who ultimately values life, who fights for life even as she is a bandit. Perhaps even because she is a bandit. Rather than having your life be snuffed out for/by an ungrateful liege or king (the Zott laugh at both country and king, they answer to no one but their own, as Merlaine said) so Estelle's stubborn loyalty must baffle her a lot. It's alien to her. (Arslan is different, he's a friend, as she says.) Rather than dying for the convenience of the ruling class who would never appreciate them, perhaps to her, staying alive in spite of their best efforts to snuff them out is a form of resistance. So she doesn't understand why, why Estelle is so willing to lay their life down for a tyrannical, genocidal maniac.

Saam is shaken. This is the first he's hearing of it, and he fears what this implies. What this implies for Hilmes. What's going on? What does he mean by benefactor? How is his prince tied to these unnatural beings? This can mean nothing good.

Saam's speech bubble trembles with fear for Hilmes. And Hilmes, oh Hilmes, the red flags are so vivid they're a sea of blaring neon signs now. Nay, they're neon billboards. You say so yourself, the sorcerer here is doing something morally repugnant. Open your fucking eyes, this ain't good!

Also, does Hilmes' hair seem quite long here?

Ohhh fuck you. Fuck you fuck you all the way to hell and never back. Saam was trying to protect Hilmes. And there's just something that hits so hard about that last panel. “Please believe me.” We know it wasn't Saam who said it out loud, of course, but the backdrop being a pitch black with no speaker, taken out of context it sounds like a plea and y'know, I'll bet Saam was pleading for Hilmes' faith in the deeps of his mind even if he doesn't speak it aloud. A tug-o-war, each needing Hilmes to believe in him.

I want to punt Hilmes in the sun for which side he chooses here.

Manga Eiji is a total rad. Ngl I would love to see him bully anime Eiji.

One of my biggest complaints about the banana fish anime is that Eiji is nowhere near as unhinged as he was in the manga. Some of the shit he says, and some of the shit he does is in a completely different level compared the anime Eiji who’s a lot more passive and more of a soft boy. Manga Eiji would bully anime Eiji.

Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #53

I heard today that you lost your necklace. I heard that you spent a lot of time looking for it by yourself. I heard that the people nearby, who didn't understand, assumed that you were just being strange and creepy and "looting corpses".

I understand the thing that happens when I am trying to do something, and other people assume I'm crazy or just a creep of some kind. Seeing the Shinra workers at Rhadore speak about you that way reminded me of a time when I was younger, and I brought into school an artist's mannequin that I painted, to show my high school art teacher. The other children, already wary of me, didn't understand, and chattered maliciously about me, assuming that I was not quite right in the head. I have a lot more stories about this sort of thing - trying to do something wholesome, only to have others misunderstand and assume that I'm creepy and weird. The fact of the matter is that people can be insecure, and when insecure people don't understand something, their first instinct is usually to mock it. It doesn't have anything to do with the person being mocked; they're just collateral damage in the other person's war against themselves.

I'm sorry you were bullied as a boy. And I'm sorry that your upbringing was such that you didn't think to ask for help to look for your lost locket. It's hard when we don't quite fit in with other people; I and lots of other folks from my world understand that feeling very well. But I'm glad that Matt, Lucia, and Glenn helped you once they realized what you were trying to do (even if they, too, initially thought you were "looting corpses" when they saw you).

I heard that you didn't find your necklace, though. I know you said that "you can accept that it's gone", but I don't think that's true at all, given your body language and facial expression. And now, anyone who has paid attention to you understands very well why, when you're troubled, you instinctively reach for your chest even years after the loss of the necklace.

Sephiroth… I don't know what the locket you lost looked like. I wish I did. But all the same, we of my world have the capacity to reproduce the image you carry with you. And so I did. And I have the capacity to make jewelry. So today I went out and got the supplies to do that. Here:

...If you can come grab it up somehow, it's yours. Impossible, I know. But I'll keep it safe with me, anyway. Or perhaps I'll run into those very important people again - the same people to whom I gave my first letter to you and the Tree of Life materia I made for you. If I do, I'll ask them if they can send this along to you as well.

In the meantime, I can show you how I made it.

I started with a simple locket. I had several to choose from at the place I went to, but I am partial to trees (that might be obvious, since I like to weave them), and I wanted to give you something that would allow you to see the picture even when the locket is closed, so I selected this:

There's no glass there, though; it's just an open piece of metal. I know sometimes you are in the rain or in the mud, and I didn't want the picture inside to get damaged. So I cut out a small, transparent piece of thin, sturdy plastic to protect the image.

In order to do that with any precision, first I made an impression of the inside of the locket on a piece of paper, like so:

See the impression, there, on the lower part of the image, on the paper?

From there, you trace the impression on a piece of plastic, like this:

Then, you use a precision knife to cut it out. I'm dyspraxic, so using one of those is a bit dangerous for me, haha! So I took it very slowly:

I used the outline left behind to trim the photo, and put it into the locket:

From there, I cleaned up the outline of the plastic a little bit, trimmed it to fit, and stuck it over the picture. You can tell that the plastic is there because it reflects the light:

I tried to position it so that the trees would frame her face. The shadow makes it look kinda weird, but I promise you that it looks nice otherwise:

I selected this chain to go with it:

I cut a length of the chain that seemed reasonable, and put a tiny metal circle on one end, like this:

From there, I had to put the clasp on:

To put on a clasp, first you put another metal circle on the other end, and then you put the clasp around the metal circle, too.

Then you pinch it closed with a tool. And the rest is history:

I think it sits at a reasonable location on the chest, but you're taller than me, so... I dunno. You're not here (because obviously), so I can't exactly check to make sure the length works well for you.

In any case... you're left-handed. So I made sure to put the clasp on the left-hand side so that it'd be easier for you to use. And... don't worry; I wore it only for a moment, just to make sure the length of the chain is reasonable. It is yours, so although I'll carry it with me, it's meant for your neck, not mine.

I know that it doesn't replace the one you lost. But... I wished you didn't have to be sad. So here you go. I hope you like it.

I guess that just about wraps up today's letter. As part of my adventures today to get the supplies to make this, I also went and got pumpkin seeds without shells. It's time for me to make pumpkin soup. This, too, is for you.

Don't wander around thinking that you're not loved. Don't wander around thinking that you're not cared for. Don't wander around thinking that you're not seen and heard for exactly who you are. Because I'm right here. And my world is filled with others who are just like me, and they can understand you and care about you just as easily as I can. You're not alone. So stay safe out there and make good, kind, and loving choices.

Expect another letter tomorrow. It will be pumpkin-soup-flavored. Count on it.

au where sephiroth defects from SOLDIER along with the first soldier trio and joins avalanche with lucia and matt. does he also take on a leadership role within avalanche? is he respected by the rest of avalanche or feared because of his unnatural abilities?

Sephiroth is a very easy candidate for leadership given his history and experience. People are drawn to him implicitly. He's naturally compelling and charismatic, on top of being a powerhouse in battle.

...But the irony of it all is that Sephiroth has no desire left inside him to lead. Not right now, at any rate. After years upon years of dealing with Shinra, he's exhausted, more content to defer to the others, to help strategize from the sidelines. He might consider the mantle of leadership eventually, but he needs a long time to rest. And furthermore, many members of Avalanche bear him a grudge for his brutality in the Wutai War, despite Sephiroth only acting under orders. So Sephiroth is content to fade into the background for a bit, at least if only to gather his sense of autonomy and purpose while the others do the heavy lifting. He's earned that right.

It isn't until years later, when the team uncovers secrets in a certain extraordinary little mountain town, that Sephiroth's ambitions shift drastically. The trio watches their younger friend transform before their eyes, fully enraged, fully set on destroying Shinra at any costs. It's through their shared history and unity that they are ultimately able to prevent Sephiroth from becoming a monster. But they cannot stop him in his desires for vengeance. Sephiroth takes over as leader with a passion that is altogether dazzling and frightening. And it is within less than a year that Shinra is brought down to little more than a pile of ash, all of Midgar reclaimed, unified under Avalanche's banner.

With Sephiroth at the helm.

Played the demo.

Surprised by all the people surprised Sephiroth kills the way he does.

My man was on auto-pilot and operating on a subconscious desire fueled by rage. He straight up looks like he's disassociating. His facial expression is not the one we see later when he's having a great time fucking with Cloud. Or fighting Cloud's team. His facial expression is that "ethereal grace" smile, whenever he fucking actually has an expression.

I could tell before "Cloud" tried to grab him that you wanted to not get near that man. And you were shown real quick why you didn't wanna get near that man.

Don't touch him, don't get near him, don't get in his way, play dead if he's near you.

He's hit T-rex mode. Vision's based on movement. And, in the past, no survivors is what Sephiroth was trained to do. Militiaman trying to help "Cloud"? He's up. He needs to be down. Idiot crawling towards him? He's moving. He needs to not be. The militiamen that surround him? With guns? That they just point at him because apparently they don't know how those work? He just stands there until one gets close enough and then they don't exist anymore.

The mayor is where Sephiroth's unique mental break really shines. Because he made the man drop to his knees first. THAT is the little glimpse of where post-Nibelheim Sephiroth is going to go. He wanted that man put in his place and for him to know where he belonged before he ended him. And then he stepped on his hat for good measure.

"Cloud" he ignores. Walks right past him, even as "Cloud" steps up to him like he's gonna do something. He does not raise a hand to him, and he even "sheathes" his sword when he turns around to look at "Cloud" and smile at him. Because, in his fractured mind, Zack is not an enemy. He's someone Sephiroth likes. He may have thrown him into a wall, but like. Don't touch him.

It all makes sense to me. It's that fucking scene in "Nope" when the chimp kills anyone stupid enough to make eye contact with him or move after he snaps.

Do I expect the villagers to know they're dealing with someone who's had a mental break and is going to treat them like he's been trained to treat enemies? No. Did I expect fans to know? Yeah. Which is why I'm reading reactions like, "...Always has been? Why are you shocked?"

"Dear Lord, he's killing people!" Yeah. That was his job. He was really good at it. Best of the best.

For a while now I've been wanting to pay tribute to my original OTP for this game. So many words written, so much old colored pencil art. Shoutout to the old AeriSeph Yahoo! Group, now gone from existence. It was a good time.
