Horses grazing in the Costa Brava: a discovery while cycling.
Some of you who live in Europe will probably agree with me. Seeing horses in the wild is not a common view these days. For me, it’s a relaxing experience as well as a source of inspiration.
In Catalonia, between Roses and Empuriabrava, this is what I’ve found: a team of brown and dark-coloured horses slightly hidden behind the trees and greenery.

The horses of St. Mark’s Basilica.
The horses of St. Mark’s Basilica.
A short visit to Venice led me to marvel at this sculpture. It’s the famous ‘quadriga’ found at the front façade of St. Mark’s Cathedral, in one of the exits.
The quadriga outside the Basilica.@elisendana
It is said that these horses were made around the 2ndc A.D., i.e., in Roman Times.
This sculpture is atypical in many ways.
Firstly, you wouldn’t dream of finding it in a church. Horses in a…

Catalan Traditions
This is a video of one of those Catalan Traditions which are worth seeing at least once in a lifetime. In June 2021 I witnessed the ‘return’ of the traditional Giants’ Dance in Olot, Northern Catalonia. Hope you enjoy the show !

Emotion-wise Learning
This is the poster I made a while ago for my students -and myself. It is based on a graph presented in the book “Principles of Language Teaching and Learning” by H. Douglas Brown. A masterpiece in ESL teaching which has illumined many of us since it was first published in the 80’s.
This past winter, I had to remind myself of these “two versions” in the poster. I will tell you why. Here are the…

The Black Poplar Tree Flower
The Black Poplar Tree Flower
The Black Poplar Tree in blossom. @elisendana
These days many people post photos of flowers in blooming. More often than not, they are pictures of planted species, delicate flower beds and also of well-arranged gardens. Without wanting to undermine their importance, let me draw your attention to this other one: the flower of the Black Poplar tree. Today, I was drawn to it like a magnet while…

‘Salvia Oficinalis’, ‘Salvia’ or ‘Sage’: a saviour for the brain
‘Salvia Oficinalis’, ‘Salvia’ or ‘Sage’: a saviour for the brain
Not long ago, my sister -and guru of natural medicine- offered me a tip: “Anna, la salvia te salva”. She was clearly referring to this magnificent plant, a shrub with big, velvet-like evergreen leaves.
Ever since that day, I have procured dried salvia leaves from my favourite herbal shop. Almost every night, I usually grab a pinch of salvia leaves and prepare a hot infusion before going to…

'Corn' or 'Maize' and the Flag of the Seven Colours.
‘Corn’ or ‘Maize’ and the Flag of the Seven Colours.
Maize or corn has been the staple food for many indigenous people in America and has been no exception in Argentina.
In one of my last trips to the province of Tucuman, in the small cosy town of Tafí del Valle, I was greatly surprised to see how it could be grown ecologically.
Angela Romano, a kind local female farmer, and entrepreneur opened her house (aka “La casa de mi tata”) to my sister…

Chamomile, easy on the ear, easy on the stomach.
Roman chamomile or simply ‘chamomile’ is such an easy and noble plant ! Easy because its name sounds sweetly in our ears in at least three languages: ‘Camamilla’ (Catalan). Chamamille (French) and Chamamile (English). It’s no wonder that it received the title of nobility in its Latin origin ‘Anthemis Nobilis’ since it has long been considered a magical plant, a first aid in any physician’s…

‘Cynara Cardunculus’, ‘Artichoke’ ‘Carxofa’ and the liver
A short visit to the Botanic Garden in the majestic Parc Nou (Olot, NE Spain) reveals interesting discoveries. One of them is this plant, which can pass unnoticed at the back of the land plot. It’s a Cynara Cardunculus, commonly known as ‘Herba Carxofera‘ (CAT) or ‘Prickly Artichoke (EN) or ‘Cardo‘ (ES).
As it is, in mid May, this plant…
