God i can’t. I’m in the midst of some daily stuff. And then I just THINK of Trigun and there are literally those stupid butterflies everyone talks about and I can’t stop smiling but at the same time my heart aches, again, literally. I just love this story and everything about it so so much it’s scary.
chapter 38 of Trigun Maximum is truly amazing. One of my favourites.
We see Vash visiting a church. Such a serene panel with him standing in the aisle, making us think he could have found some of the calm he searches for. Then we get hit with this page
Not really surprising, no, but Vashs expressions just hits you.
Going forward we have this funny little moment with Wolfwood just trying to enjoy his noodles for once and you can see the gears turning in his head: „Do I HAVE to do something? Naaaah, Spikey´s good“
and then ofc he runs to his aid anyways.
We finally see what Vashs inhuman abilities can do aside from bursting out and destroying everything at once:
If used in tiny amounts it is actually such a cool and damn helpful thing, catching bullets faster than you can dodge. But ofc Vash hates this and he doesn’t have it under control, fearing that the angelarm is breaking out any moment now.
Which leads us to the most impactful thing of this chapter:
Meryl loosing it as she sees Vashs feathers appear:
Such a perfect display of PTSD and absolutely understandable as well. She was the closest to him as he went „beastmode“, she literally had to jump out under his wing and fire her gun while a swirling mass of energy was building up right above her head.
I want to believe that her reaction surprised herself as well because we have seen her in the beginning of this chapter, asking where Vash was and actively seeking him out. She didn’t take the time to actually sit down and comprehend what happened or attempted talk to him or Milly about this. She bottled this event up and now the horror releases.
And then ofc we have this sequence of people bashing Vash, really well shown with their looming shioulettes while he just sits there and takes the blame.
And fuck it all, they are throwing rocks at him like kindergarten-kids because they are scared and don’t know better but damn it hurts. And he just accepts it all and leaves the place he is not wanted at without an angry word or look at these people.
And we get this famous panel of Vash were he admits that he doesn’t know what face to make anymore.
It happened so often to him that he adopted smiling as a default reaction. He doesn’t even realized he is doing it anymore and that it isn’t the „proper“ reaction if people behave like that towards you.
The chapter ends with the heartbreaking scene of Vash reaching out to comfort the girls and Meryl shying away from him.
He is so sad, but at the same time he is not surprised. How often had he something like that happen already?
He puts on his default smile and rushed out of the city with Wolfwood.
What a beautiful, sad chapter. There is a lot to unpack.
Is it just me or are there zero (0) crossover fanfics?
And like, probably that’s reasonable as the two desert worlds overlap too much while the narratives do too little. However! If we look beyond the first two novels and delve into the God Emperor with sprinkles of Children the opportunities are infinite:
First of all: plant are derived from sand worms, so the two concepts overlap and mix together.
Vash and Knives are Ghanima and Leto II but with a sprinkle of Alia and Paul and also a twist: Knives DO merge with Vash during one of their confrontations
The rest of their fights / talks are in their mindscape
in his godhood Knives/Vash is not omnipotent, but has immense plant powers, the memories of ancestors get replaced with minds of Zazie (aka plants/worms) and Vash
let me eleborate: KNIVES AS LETO II A GIANT WORM GOD RULER OF THE UNIVERSE but there’s is still Vash in him slowly regaining control like a reverse of baron Vladimir changing Alia.
In trigun turms it’s Noah ark: Knivse’s body has shifted and Vash is under his control (for a time being)
Nicholas is Duncan. Ghola Duncan? Probably (here I can’t but think of Lenipes’ two Wolfwood aka Padre and his clone). Not sure if he should suffer from being a murder, from not being human, being a man out of time or all of the above altogether. God. They fall into each other perfectly!
Milly as knives’s bride Hwi (a perfect understanding person, sunshine incarnate but probably minus her disturbing birth and upbringing? Or at least toned down). She’d kinda be the one to wake Vash (sorry, Meryl, my love! It should be your role, but…)
Meryl is Siona. The Answer to all the questions. The woman so strong willed that she’ll never ever stop chasing the God.
Eye of Michael is Bene Gesserit. (What does it imply? The order is no longer only women? Or Trans Wolfwood and Livio? Dunno)
Roberto is Hvi’s dad whose name I don’t remember but who jumped out of the tower in the most impressive way.
Elindira is Moneo (does this make her Meryl’s parent? I guess? Just for the lol factor)
Legato is just there, I guess. Representing those who believe in the God.
Have you been honest, I love this idea. Am I going to write that? Not really. Maybe just eleborate on the plot? Maybe not even that. But I needed to get that out of my system.
PS - oh. I just realized I got my Knives/Milly into twins/Milly which is weird. But also there is Wolfwood/Meryl and of course Vashwood but Knives is there too (in Dune Leto is OBSESSED with Duncan. Revives the man times and times again even though he tries to kill him all the time)??? God that’s messy xD
Oh god. Oh no. I just came across an unedited part of Trigun Stampede episode. And it all came rushing back: how smooth every movement is, how nothing ever stays still in the background, how people and animals react to each other, how sound design and music breathe in soul into this work, already so full of life.
Okay, so, I was in bed looking for Tristamp fanart, and I came across a comment online that said Meryl's voice reaching Vash in chapter 12 was cheap, and it happened only because she is "the girl". My mind went immediately ballistic so hard i almost fell to the floor. Like, did we watch the same show at all? (screaming in a fit of rage)
Here i'm going (rolls up sleeves) beware spoilers. (and sorry for my broken english)
Meryl was the start of the show. She was our eyes, the narrator, the witness, and the rope that first tied the main group together (pun intended).
She started following Vash out of curiosity, then by admiration, her beliefs, and a big determination to help him and learn more about him, through danger, even not knowing how to fight or even lift a pistol.
Vash, despite loving humans, was, at the same time, distant to them and closed off. Almost every time, sooner or later, he ended up bringing some form of misery, hurt or loss to the humans around him, or they ended up betraying him. That's why he was called the "humanoid typhoon". We have Jenora Rock as an example. After the downfall with Knives, even Rosa, who seemed to know him for a long time, blamed him and tossed him out of her life. (I'm not roasting Rosa, i understand it's easy to put the blame on others when you suffer a great loss).
Meryl, witnessed all of this, and still followed him.
Meryl, who learned what Vash really is, and saw his markings, and even though she was surprised, she still smiled to him the next day.
Meryl, who was kidnapped to trap Vash into coming to July, and was told the truth about plants and humanity, but still didn't bail.
Meryl, who lost her mentor because of her decision to follow Vash, and didn't blame him, at all.
Meryl, who ran straight to try to save him, even though it was very dangerous and she could have ended up dead.
In the moment Vash was totally robbed of his bodily autonomy, his will, and basically, he was being violated, a tiny human, who followed him around through danger, challenged his views but never blamed him, smiled to him, wasn't afraid of him and supported him, was there, calling his name, calling for him to come back. A tiny human who believed in him, along with Luida, Brad and Rem.
This was specially noticeable when Vash was running, following Rem's voice. We can hear her say to him,"Thank you for protecting my dreams and my hopes", this, refering to her ideals about plants and humans coming together, wanting to create a bridge between them with their help, as she said to the twins when they were kids. And JUST RIGHT AFTER THIS, when he is looking down with sorrow and closes his eyes, Rem's voice calling his name mixes with Meryl's, and with that final push, he opens his eyes with a changed look, this time hearing only Meryl, and he gets out. THIS DETAIL GUYS. THE EYES. THE VOICES. LOOK AT THE GIFS.
THE CHANGE IN HIS EYES?????
Just imagine, after everything he went through, after being psychologically tortured by Knives, what was for him to hear Meryl CALLING HIS NAME and trying to save him. WAITING FOR HIM in a very dangerous place when she could have just, you know, escaped. His hopes in humanity, Rem's values and love lessons, compressed in this small tiny koala person. How can you even think, her voice reaching him, was FREAKING CHEAP OR DIDN'T DO ANYTHING? ASDJLAJKDASHDASKDLASDBASKD (dramatically sharpening a knife)
I love both characters, but if they were in the same anime, I’d be asleep in no time at all no matter what’s going on in the story.
Also: since when is there this fashion for multicolored letters? Frieren is not an offender, but I just couldn’t not use it speaking of My happy marriage.
Dunno if you saw this already, but a while back someone pointed out that WW's '98 clothes as a child look like his Tristamp S1 clothes. Just felt like I should say that.
Yessssssss. And also-
Legato in Stampede and in Trigun maximum volume 13 chapter 8
Livio in Stampede and in Trigun maximum volume 13 chapter 7
one of my absolute favorite things about nightow's art is how good he is at silhouettes. and no character is a better showcase of this than mr nicholas d wolfwood himself. so this is a post appreciating how Shaped wolfwood is
(not under a cut because that messes up the image formatting fsr, thanks tumblr! and VERY sorry to anyone trying to scroll past this)
you can really see how good nightow is at this is in panels where ww is static and his limbs are close to his body. we can still easily read his pose just by how the outline of his suit is shaped and how his hands and/or feet are positioned.
his dynamic poses and poses where he's holding the punisher are also FANTASTIC and a lot of fun
this set of panels is the perfect demonstration of both of the types of poses i'm talking about (also i just wanted to post it because it's cool)
more Wolfwood Shapes i like. the poses are still readable even though they're just Weird Black Shapes
i also really want to include this page, not only does it have another wolfwood shape i enjoy, but the composition is just superb. i love the contrast between vash and ww in this scene.
i also need to mention how LEGGY this man is. dare i say he's almost as leggy as vash.
i love this chapter cover page because it shows a little more detail than usual in ww's suit, but still has the striking black silhouette and use of negative space. (i wonder if the original artwork was in color?)
i also love when nightow lights him up with stark white against black for dynamic shading!
and there are some REALLY cool effective lighting shots during the fight with ninelives
also bonus because i love when he's Just A Rectangle
Oh Dandadan my beloved. How well you always play with tropes and cliches, genre conventions and cult classics. And every time I think “well, that’s brilliantly stupid, nothing can top that” and then a new chapter comes. This time with:
~ there was only one bed~
On a note just half a step more serious, I love the way there’s always harem bait that never actually turns into, well, a harem. Or, actually, into two harems as both Momo and Ocarun meet new people all the time (equality wins? lol). There is tension, there are tropes - but at the end of the day there’s friendship and such sweet care between supposed love rivals. The chapter of all the kids spending quality time together before this Jumanji arc is so dear to me. Vamola and Momo’s friendship especially, but all the cast members have great chemistry. .
What I mean by all that is even though they are in the most romance novel / fanfiction situation ever and Zuma seems pretty enchanted by Momo, I don’t really worry either about this nice new character’ or the main couple’s feelings being seriously hurt. Or that theres going to be something creepy (well, there sure will be creepy stuff, but in a… non threatening way? At least to my eyes. At least, when we’re not talking about actual horror elements). What I mean by that is probably I’ve come to trust the author, I guess. And that’s a nice feeling.
It was supposed to be a page about anime but I keep talking about manga, lol. But Trigun is just too good Dandadan is way too hilarious to shut up about.
Episode 6 of Dungeon Meshi was produced in collaboration with a smaller studio, Enishiya - and it went way harder than I expected, for being made up of two relatively simple and self contained stories focusing on one character each.
And you can really see how those extra resources meant the animators could give full focus to both halves of the episode. Let's take a look at one piece that stole the show.
The first half was handled primarily by episode director/storyboard artist Keita Nagahara and co-animation director Hirotoshi (or Hiroaki? [1]) Arai. It's actually kinda insane how much of this section can be attributed to these two.
But the real star of the show is the second half, Chilchuck vs the mimic, led by co-animation director Toya Ooshima in his first animation director role for TV anime!
And the biggest aspect that knocked my dang boots off was something that's very consistent with Ooshima's style: background animation!
By animating the backgrounds rather than using painted still images, Ooshima and the team of other similarly skilled animators are able to create these beautiful dynamic camera movements that wouldn't be possible otherwise. Like these cuts by Takeshi Maenami where the camera becomes an expressive part of the scene, zipping forward and backward, and tilting to emphasize the speed of this murderous hermit crab. (Maenami's style is also very recognizable here - snappy timing and quick camera movements)
Or this cut by the incredible Kaito Tomioka which cleverly combines a traditional background for the walls with a fully animated floor. The level of detail in these tiles is just completely insane, and used to great effect with this wide, diagonal angle, and the way the camera tentatively drifts forward before reversing direction, and the tiles blur out as it speeds up.
I don't think I'm the only one caught off guard by how much they full-assed this little side story, but it was a pleasant surprise!
I broke down the entire episode in this video here. A lot of research went into this one, and I think it's the best one of these videos I've made so far, so if you're at all interested in more of this type of analysis in video form, I would really appreciate it if you checked it out, or re-blogged this post! Thanks

[1] It's listed as Hirotoshi on Anime News Network, but Hiroaki on a key frame that Studio Trigger shared on Twitter, so I'm not sure which one is wrong.
