A look into C!Niki's feelings towards Tommy from Doomsday onward

I had a friend ask me to explain Niki's reasoning behind becoming a 'villain' and trying to kill Tommy after New L'Manberg was destroyed and in doing so accidentally wrote about 1k words so figured I'd share here since it's been a while since I've done any analysis! It's not formatted as nicely but hopefully still reads well.

We could 100% argue that c!Niki was in love, or at least had a very deep affection for c!Wilbur. Throughout the first exile, Niki is constantly worrying about him and wondering when he will come to take her away from Manberg and help her escape Schlatt's tyranny. She doesn't GET to see his descent into madness. The only real part of his change she witnesses is directly after the festival when they're all talking about Techno killing Tubbo and she can tell he's off but she has no idea to what extent.

The only time we get to watch them interact again after is when the war is finally happening, and he acts normal enough during that she almost forgets and gets so focused on fighting that nothing else clicks and then he's gone. He's gone, and L'Manberg is gone, and she's left with a crater and the boy who supposedly was right by Wilbur's side this whole time and he did NOTHING. Nothing to help him, from what Niki knows. It's a classic setup of a character knowing only half the story and running with it.

She's in pain, having been left alone by Wilbur, and tries to pick up the pieces of her life but nothing is the same. She has no connection to New L'Manberg because despite how hard Tubbo works on it, her real connection was to Wilbur, not the country. So she leaves. And she's alone. And she has Fundy, but Fundy's got his own difficult feelings towards L'Manberg and they feed into each other's unhealthy views with no one to stop their echo chamber until news spreads that the community house has been blown up, and apparently it's Tommy's doing.

They come back to town only to be urged by Tommy to help save L'Manberg, again, but he is not the charismatic person Wilbur was. He's not even the kind person Tubbo is. L'Manberg is so hated in Niki and Fundy's eyes as the place of their trauma, that they decide they will do what they can to ensure that it's wiped off the map for good, and maybe with that they will feel better too. (newsflash: they don't) So they sabotage the supplies, and when Doomsday happens Niki takes her final fuck you to L'Manberg and all the pain it's given her by burning down L'Mantree.

Losing L'Manberg for good isn't the relief Niki thought it would be. She thought she'd stop thinking about it, that she'd find a way to move on, but in the end, she actually is worse off than ever before. She makes a place for herself, a little hidden world under the flower fields, but she's so mentally ill during this. Like genuinely, cc!Niki makes a point to mention how her character starts acting erratically, respawns herself instead of bothering to eat to refill her hunger bar, etc.

She's fully alone with nothing but her thoughts and ultimately finds herself thinking that if Wilbur isn't here for her to blame for this pain, then it must be Tommy's fault. Tommy is still here, and he's been through it all too, but he hasn't changed drastically like every other remaining original L'Manbergian has. He's still chaotic and terrorizes people, and he seems fine, and she's resentful for it. How did he live through this and not come through broken like she is? It's not fair.

Then Jack shows up, with an open mind, and Niki is told she isn't alone in her resentment towards Tommy, though Jack is for more direct reasons. They in general have anger towards Dream, Techno, and Tommy for their part in ruining the things they love, but the only person they could truly take down right now? Tommy.

So they plan, and they attempt, because sometimes your brain makes you think the only solution is the worst one. They try to kill him with the nuke testing, and it fails, and the more time goes on the worse Niki gets as her mental health keeps declining and Jack gets busy with the hotel and he starts to wise up and realize that maybe killing Tommy won't give him the peace he craves.

Niki and Jack's partnership ultimately ends and Niki ends up focusing on her underground city more and starts in a way, finding things to do with her time that don't revolve around revenge. Foolish finds her city and helps her beautify it, people start to visit her more, and then she gets an invitation. From Technoblade.

She joins the Syndicate at first for more power, but ultimately later on more than anything she just wants people that care for her in her life again. Being around people again is doing her good, and she's able to piece together her thoughts for the first time in ages. The Syndicate has a meeting to discuss Snowchester and during that meeting, Ranboo reveals that Tommy has died.

Niki's first reaction is to laugh! Because there's no way that's true, she'd been trying all this time to kill him. Tommy is unkillable. And she's okay with that. She's realized that her anger was never actually meant for Tommy, he was an unfortunate focus of it but in reality, she's angry at Wilbur. Angry at him for making her suffer in Manberg, angry at him for destroying what they worked for together, and ultimately, angry at him for dying and leaving her all alone. Her anger's been misdirected all this time and she finally recognizes that nothing is Tommy's fault, he's been hurt just as much as she has.

She leaves, and she heals, and she looks inwardly for the first time since Wilbur died and starts to actually deal with her feelings healthily. She doesn't hate Tommy, and she stops respawning to fill her hunger, and she starts spending time outside of her underground city. She starts baking again.

Dream SMP Characters’ Worldview & Philosophies

I’ve been thinking about the differences between the way certain characters view the world and themselves, so I’ve created a meta for those who are interested.

(Note: These are extremely oversimplified and condensed for the sake of reading consumption and brevity.)

This post includes only Major Characters (Involved in 3+ Arcs). Some will have more or less points depending on how vocal or unique their perspectives are. Points are mentioned regardless of if the character has changed or shifted their worldview in later story arcs. 

Characters who share the same philosophies with others will have their names in (parentheses) beside each point. Worldviews that are entirely unique or not shared will be bolded.

Wilbur:

Okay fuck it here’s how I think it would go if Ranboo’s guilt got the best of him and he decided to tell Technoblade about his secret marriage. (This is my first Dream SMP thing I’ve written, I apologize if it is OOC.)

“Hey, uh, Techno? Can I talk to you real quick?”

Technoblade looked up from where he was organizing his chests to see Ranboo standing at the entrance to his house, head bent down to prevent from hitting it against the doorway. He was avoiding eye contact, staring at a spot to Techno’s left rather than at his face, and he looked even more uneasy than he normally did.

Technoblade closed the chest, “Sure, yeah, come on in.” He said to him. He gestured for Ranboo to come inside.

Ranboo swallowed and moved forward a few steps, closing the door behind him. Even as he did, he kept his distance, clearly uncomfortable, and maybe even.. afraid?

Technoblade frowned. Ranboo was a good kid, but he tended to blow things out of proportion when it came to his own fears. He remembered the way he had tensed after telling him and Phil that he was the one who had blown up the community house. It was as if he had been preparing himself for whatever punishment he expected.

Ranboo’s expression looked oddly similar now to that moment.

Techno raised an eyebrow, “You alright?” He asked.

Ranboo fidgeted with the fabric of his shirt, “Wha- Me? I- Uh- Yeah, I’m, uh- Fine. I just- Uh,” He ran a hand through his hair, “Uhh.. I just.. I need to talk to you. I need to.. yeah.”

“..Okay..” Technoblade prompted.

“Uhh.. remember when we went to.. uh.. Snowchester? At the Syndicate meeting?”

Snowchester? That’s what this was about? Why was Ranboo so nervous about something he wasn’t even remotely involved with?

“Uh.. yeah? What about it?”

Ranboo swallowed, “Well.. uh..” He let out a nervous chuckle, “You know- You know how I said I’d never been there before?”

Technoblade rose an eyebrow, “Yeah..?” He said.

“Well.. that was a lie, actually. I- I lied.”

Technoblade blinked, “Uh.. okay? So.. what, you’ve been there before?” Why would he lie about that?

Ranboo’s expression went from nervous to panicked, “Well, I- I didn’t- I didn’t mean to- I mean I did mean to, but I- I felt bad about it- I- I’m sorry for it. That’s why- That’s why- That’s why I’m telling you now! Because I felt guilty, and I didn’t like lying to you, and I like you- you’re my friend.. I think.. And I get that you’re probably mad, but I just-“

Techno raised his hands up in mock surrender, “Alright, alright- geez, calm down, Ranboo. I was just asking a question. I don’t care that you’ve.. been to Snowchester, or whatever. But, uh, could you maybe explain? Because you’re kinda acting like I should be angry with you, and I kinda wanna know what I’m supposed to be angry about.”

“Right.” Ranboo said. “Right, right- yeah, that makes sense.”

His left hand moved to touch a gold ring on his right hand as he spoke, a habit that he’d developed recently. Technoblade had noticed the ring, but he hadn’t asked about it- for all he knew, it could just be a piece of jewelry.

“..You know Tubbo?” Ranboo asked.

Techno laughed, “Uh, yes, I know Tubbo.” He gave Ranboo a grin, adding sarcastically, “I’ve talked to him a couple of times, I think.”

For a moment, Ranboo relaxed a little, his eyes crinkling up as he let out a laugh, “Right- Yeah,” He laughed again, “Stupid question.” Then, he looked nervous again, “The thing is, Techno.. Tubbo and I.. we..” He trailed off, twisting the ring on his finger.

Technoblade looked down at the ring, then back up at Ranboo’s expression, then back to the ring. An idea formed.

“Hold on- are you two, like, engaged, or something?”

Ranboo startled, surprised, “Oh! Uh- yeah, actually. Well- kind of- we’re not engaged, more like married, but-“

“You’re WHAT?!” Technoblade exclaimed.

Ranboo flinched, “I- I’m sorry- I’m sorry, I know I should’ve told you sooner, and I know he’s government, but I- It just- It just happened, you know! And I- I didn’t-”

“YOU GOT MARRIED AND YOU DIDN’T INVITE ME?!”

Ranboo stopped, “Uh, what?”

“I mean I know I’m just a side character, but you’d think I’m at least important enough to be invited to your wedding-”

Ranboo let out a startled laugh, “I’m sorry- that’s why you’re mad?!”

Technoblade glared at him, “Well yeah, Ranboo, I invited you into the hospitality of my home, the least you could do is invite me to your wedding-”

”But- But- But he’s- government- kind of!” Ranboo sputtered, “I thought you would- I don’t know, think I was betraying you, or something.”

”Betraying-?” Technoblade rolled his eyes, “I don’t care who you marry, Ranboo! What I do care about is at least getting some free food out of it, and maybe an inspirational mentor speech!”

Ranboo, who seemed significantly calmer now, smiled, “I- We didn’t have a wedding. It was for tax purposes, initially, but then it..“ He touched the ring, “..Wasn’t.”

Technoblade paused from his dramatics, lowering his voice, “Oh, alright.” He said. “Yeah, then, I don’t care.”

Then, he went back to organizing his chests.

Sometimes I fall into the pit of 'aww man Big Q and Tubbo both suffered and went thru hardships' but no. Quackity wanted power, has always wanted power, that has always been the drive for him. He ran against Wilbur for presidency, and only paired up w Schlatt to get the win but didn't expect Schlatt to fully take over and leave him mostly powerless.

They fight and take down Schlatt and he sees Tubbo get put in the seat he so desperately wants to fill and slides his way into vice presidency and immediately uses it to manipulate and pressure Tubbo into doing everything he wants, the only things he loses on is Tubbo exiling Tommy and Quackity wanting to execute Ranboo. At that point he realizes he has no hold over Tubbo anymore and if he wants power he has to get it on his own and builds up his own nation.

But the heart of Las Nevadas is as empty as its buildings. The only people he's convinced to join him have done so by way of threat, manipulation, or both. He's gathering the weak-willed because he thinks with numbers there is power but then suddenly here comes Tubbo. Strong enough on his own now for both himself and Ranboo and he wont wave to Quackity's demands any longer.

And while he's been gone Tubbo's found actual power, made his own in the form of nuclear weapons and gotten familial ties that give him something to protect. Tubbo's got the power and he did it all without purposely hurting anyone. And now he's a threat.

-Bad has known Punz, George, Dream, Sapnap, Sam, and Ponk for upwards of 10 years

-Hbomb was amazed that so many people knew each other through Bad and described him as the “Founding Titan” from Attack of the Titans

-Created “Purgatory” on MunchyMC, a place to send hackers/cheaters without banning them. His reasoning was that he didn’t want to make people pay for an unban, he wanted to let people redeem themselves and get a second chance

-Stopped himself from telling a prank he pulled in the past because he he was aware of his impressionable audience and didn’t want to “give them bad ideas”

-Reasoning for not swearing is to create family friendly content for kids whose parents didn’t let them watch content with swearing

-Says he doesn’t mind/likes it when others look to him like an older brother figure

-Hopped on Skeppy’s stream that time Skeppy was visibly and audibly depressed solely to comfort him up

-Sank hours of his time helping Karl with TFTSMP builds 

-When he talks about his more dangerous hobbies (knife throwing, competitive shooting, paintballing, archery, etc.) he also always preaches safety

-Genuinely loves his fanbase and community and always tells us and expresses that

-Always credits art he uses and always emphasizes the importance of crediting artists (once spent hours looking for an art cred)

-Whenever he refers to his future kids its “when I have kids” or “for my kids” never “if I have kids”

-Loves Rat so much and always tweets about her; keeps a folder of just fanart of Rat

-Deliberately doesn’t tell the audience details about his DSMP character (like what species his character is) so we can run wild with headcanons and our own ideas  

-So inclusive and willing to involve other people in things (grabbed basically every CC not involved in lore and put them in the Bloodvines arc, e.g. Ponk, Purpled, Eret, Punz, Skeppy) (Ponk said a couple months ago he wasn’t comfortable with lore rp and now he’s actually playing a role)

-Killed cringe culture with his bare hands (this man says “owo” and “uwu” unironically) 

-Broke character and got genuinely emotional and distressed at the thought of losing Skeppy even in rp

-Stopped repeatedly killing George in MC because he didn’t want to take away from the viewers’ experience (can’t be said for karl, quackity, and sapnap lol)

-Hbomb says he likes letting Bad just talk because he thinks Bad is super interesting and nice to listen to

And finally,

-Cultivating a supportive and welcoming environment from the very beginning; not tolerating toxicity and hate (Bad himself commented how he noticed the Dream Team/other MunchyMC people got less toxic over the years he’s known them). He’s the backbone of this corner of the MCYT community.
