Parting thoughts:
I took my time (3 Days) to get through all of Scargiver, but it wasnât unpleasant to keep returning to the storyâ I just had to take more time to get through it. This tells me it wouldâve been more successful as a show.
In a lot of ways, this felt less like a an adult-oriented Star Wars and more like a live-action remake of Studio Gonzoâs Samurai 7 anime from 2004. The difference between these films and Samurai 7 however, is that the anime takes its time to establish a dynamic for a party so large. Thereâs literally seven people we need to get to know. Weâre along for the ride to watch the characters interacting on a journey. ďżź
Here, however, The Journey is cut for time, and the script seems to focus only on the high-fat, salty bits of a storyâslow motion fight scenes, huge set pieces, random trauma-dumping inserted for exposition.
In many ensemble cast shows/movies that work, the characters take time with one another. There are periods of rest and bonding. Thatâs why it feels comforting to watch themâwe feel like weâre part of their ensemble, and growing with them.
Shows like Avatar, The Bear, The Expanse, movies like The Gooniesâall also leave room in the script for rest and character time where the stakes are low and theyâre learning about each other. In Rebel Moon, that character development feels shoehorned and paint-by-numbers: âOkay, adopted daughter who is betrayed, check. Samurai woman from a cyberpunk planet who fights for revenge, check. Hot French Farmer whoâs just here for a good time, check.â
Thereâs no short cut for making a likable group of characters, unfortunately. We have to spend actual on-screen time with them and decide if we like them. Thatâs why we end up worrying more about the Farmers in Rebel Moon than we do the actual main castâbecause we spend more time with them overall.
I think if Zack Snyder balanced out his Hot Wheels Cool Factor a bit more to spend more time doting on characters, his stories would feel so much more emotionally grounded. Explosions are cool, campy fun is ALWAYS appreciated, and itâs ok if youâre just making a lore heavy movie thatâs about super strong pretty people, but even in (great) comic books & animeâitâs not all about the aestheticsâitâs about pushing storytelling in a highly visual medium without losing your audience.
All that being said, the fight scenes all over this movie were stunning, and a joy to watch.
Interested to see where this story will go from here, and how itâs received over timeâas I see this series becoming a campy cult hit years from now.

*in the most unhurried voices possible, with the slowest cuts between dialogue*
Gunnar: Kora *Pause* Kora, where are you? The engineâs runningâ *Pause* Iâm waiting for you.
Kora: *looking distantly down an elevator shaft* Iâm almost there.
This feels like a scene out of Twilight.

Genuinely never put two and two together that a great villain was a charismatic villain.
Until today, where that lack became startlingly clear.

Jimmy has by far been the best character in this series and I cannot decide if itâs Anthony Hopkins or the writing itself.
Meanwhile, Sofia Boutella: You are choosing a side, James. đď¸đđď¸
I swear, some scenes sheâs great and others it feels like sheâs falling asleep.

Back on my Rebel Moon bullshit for Day 2, and weâre now about 50 minutes into Scargiver.
Itâs important to mention that this series is not horrific in the way that some folks have already characterized it. Itâs just not DC Star Wars everyone wanted it to be.
Itâs Turkish Star Wars.

Plenty of highly intelligent people end up getting sucked in to cults because they just wanted people to hang out with. There are antivaxxer nurses. Your ability to act on empirical reason breaks down fast if your social and emotional needs aren't being met.

So I just feel like, if youâre going to have a space epic that spans several movies, for the love of god, take your time setting up character dynamics.
Half an hour into Scargiver and theyâre being presented embroidered tapestries that signify their character traits, and rather than this scene being affirming and tender, Iâm finding it informative.
Like âReally âď¸ đď¸ Nemesis is like lighteningâŚâď¸âď¸â
In a film series thatâs so massively dependent on the way the main party interactsâthey interact SO SELDOMLY with one another, and instead we just have these nonverbal anecdotal scenes of each character just doing a thing.
