Chapter 2
Cyrus ran up a tree before hanging upside down. He aimed an arrow at the target with the sheriffs face poorly drawn on it. He loosened the arrow with ease and watched it barrel through the air before lodging into the targets eye. "Boom! You're a cyclops now!" He fell from the tree flipping just in time to land on his feet. His long white hair flowing and tangling in an unruly manner before he flips it out of his face.
"If you somehow survived that it'll be an improvement on your ugly mug" he talked to the sloppy doodle as if it were alive. "Not so smug now with your stupid ball and chain thinking you're so strong and intimidating. Look at me I can throw one of these. Look at me this is my signature weapon. Ladies. Ladies!" He mocked. "Please form an organized line!" Cyrus laughed at his seemingly perfect impression. Though he paused to notice the silence and emptiness of the forest around him.
Nobody in sight. Nobody to laugh at his jokes or tell him if they're even funny. He wouldn't complain about some notes. He shook the sudden loneliness off and pulled out his lute and began to play "Ooooohhhh, they say the king of Awna is a righteous noble man but let's say as of today I am not a fan. He's a liar and a cheat and he thinks he can't be beat, but let's be fair when comes to his only heir, he really couldn't care. He's a liar and a cheat and he thinks can't be beat but he still hasn't caught me, I'd consider that defeat"
he felt very proud of his lyrical genius and imagined a crowd of people crying for an encore. Although his fantasy was rudely interrupted. "Lotta tough talk for someone who's about to be caught" the sheriff sneered. "That doesn't even rhyme!!!" Cyrus pointed at him accusingly. "Bye!" He turned heel and took off.
He dodge a rock and leaped off it to propel himself into the air before swinging off a tree branch landing a distance forward building momentum. He heard an net arrow whip past him. They were gaining on him faster than usual. He looked behind. Damn it! They had horses this time. He couldn't outrun them. But maybe he could outsmart them.
He took the the trees instead of the ground. Swinging from one branch to the other with ease before sending himself high in the air landing on a rocky cave. He dipped in with ease. "In the cave!!!" One the men shouted. They all dismounted their horses to go inside. "We got him trapped now there's no way outta here" the sheriff said smugly.
Cyrus tried not to laugh hanging from the vines just at the mouth of the cave. He hid in the dark hanging from the ceiling until he was sure they were far enough in the cave. He climbed back out on top to decide which horse he was going to steal.
He hopped on the sheriff's horse "midnight beauty" and took off for the hills. He wished he could see their faces the minute they realized they'd been tricked but it was too risky to stick around and watch. Another close call but still exciting. "Those idiots will never catch me" he laughed before something heavy knocked him off midnight beauty. He fell to the ground entangled in a net.

Chapter 1
Pete lied awake in his pod staring at the the transparent reflection staring back. Normally he slept like a baby in his pod located in his living courters but he couldn’t stop thinking about the phone call. The conversation he had with his parents. They didn't understand that he needed to do this. That he couldn't come home. But his mother's sobs haunted his mind. How dare they make him feel guilty? How dare it work? What kind of parent isn't proud of their son joining the space military?
He knew Sgt Dawes would notice the bags under his eyes upon inspection. If a hair was out of place she noticed. Maybe he could put on some powder and she would be none the wiser. Probably not. But it was worth a shot. He exited his pod early. Something he could be reprimanded for but he needed to do it. He went to his mirror on the other wall. His courters were small and he wasn't allowed many personal belongings. But he liked that. Less things to worry about. He approached the mirror and pulled the drawer below to find his makeup. He only ever used it on his days off.
If any of the others found out he liked to wear makeup, he didn't think he'd be treated the same. He loved to express himself in different colors and contours. But today he was just gonna cover up the lack of sleep. He took the powder and dabbed the brush in it before dabbing and lightly dusting underneath his eyes. He took a blender to blend it just enough to make it look more like his actual skin.
He then heard a ding. That was the sign to get out of bed but he was already out. At least he knew he wouldn't be late. His friend Sebastian was late far too many times. And Sgt Dawes punished him accordingly. Pete got into his daily uniform. Made sure he looked up to code and stood in front of his automatic door and waited.
Another ding and it opened automatically. He could see across from him a range of other open courters with other soldiers standing in perfect posture and form awaiting the word from Drill Sergeant Dawes. He knew that those soldiers probably saw the same thing on their side. Sgt Dawes slowly but methodically strolled through the center of the hall.
She didn't seem to even glance their way. Her face emotionless and cold as she made her way to the end of the hall then went to his side first. One by one she asked each private by name to step outside their door. She would then inspect them up and down with a scrutinizing expression.
She stopped apparently at the one next to him. He dared not look over. He kept his eyes straight ahead. He knew whose courters those were. His buddy Sebastian. He listened and could hear the faint sound of a sink running. "Private Long! Late again!" Pete stared ahead trying not to even give a side ways glance.
Though he knew what Sebastian was in for and he felt bad. But no matter how many times they practiced he just couldn't help him speed up his process. "How many times do you need to learn this lesson before you get it through that thick skull!" Without even looking Pete was well aware she was right up in Sebastian's face and her screaming and hollering was earsplitting even from this distance. Sebastian knew not to answer unless given permission.
And even if he was, excuses were not tolerated. "How do you expect to last two seconds on the battlefield if you can't even brush your teeth fast enough in the morning?!?!" Sebastian let out an audible whimper that would be practically the death of him. The uncomfortable silence that followed was sickening.
Her voice turned soft. Not a good sign. "Listen private. I'm the Drill Sergeant and it's my job to train an army that works like one being. Every second one falls behind that effects the being as a whole. I think you'll find that something like that can have devastating consequences but this is what you signed up for isn't it private? To be whipped into shape and a part of something bigger than yourself? Permission to speak."
Sebastian sounded relieved as he answered. "Yes drill sergeant..." honestly his voice gave away how exhausted he was. "Since it seems you need help speeding up the process. A little practice with a toothbrush might be beneficial... you're going to scrub the bathrooms with one. I want it spotless and I want it done before lights out tonight. Do you understand private? Permission to speak." Sebastian answered softly. "Yes. Drill sergeant." Sgt. Dawes wasn't going to let any weakness fly. "What was that I couldn't hear you private!" Sebastian spoke up immediately. "Yes Drill Sergeant!!!"
"Dismissed. To the training barracks for the rest of you"
