AVAILABLE - Etched Pyrite crystal with a super cool, sharp metallic texture! From the Purple Hope No. 4 Claim, Green Ridge, Snoqualmie Mining District, King Co., Washington! I have to say, this is such a treat to hold and examine in person. Its aesthetic, craggy structure combined with its brassy metallic luster makes this piece unique among other Pyrites, with deeply penetrating crevasses that form sharp, gnarled structures visible from the exterior of the specimen. It may have originally been a cubic crystal prior to the natural etching process, which transformed it into this complex, otherworldly oddity. In essence, it went through a period of dissolution that reduced the original structure of the crystal to its current bizarre state. In spite of this, on one upper corner of the specimen is an area that distinctly shows a rudimentary cubic structure which hints at its original appearance! Etched Pyrite is virtually unheard of, from anywhere, especially from this storied mining region. King County is synonymous with fine, exquisite Pyrite crystals, usually associated with sceptered Quartz crystals and clusters. The Pyrites from here are famous for their textbook structure, from perfect cubes to complex pyritohedrons, often with magnificent growth structures and striations present across their faces. The singular pocket that yielded these uniquely etched Pyrites is decidedly NOT the norm for Pyrite from here at all. It’s definitely best appreciated in person. Sharp, very lustrous crystals on this piece, with fantastic deeper purple phantoms in the square faces that complement the lighter shade of purple in the rest of this specimen. Complete all around, with a contrasting mix of vitreous and matte luster. This is a really, really good one, fully displayable from different angles. Midnight Moldavite shenanigans! Fyi the big boi in the middle is 8 grams and comes out of my collection. 👌🏼 Powerful, juicy green Moldavite, from the only region in the world that produces this material. Formed from a 15 million year old meteor impact in present day western Bavaria, the old 16 mile wide Ries Kessel crater is now a fertile basin. The strewn field that yields these precious green gems lies over 100 miles away within a 12 square mile area. Imagine how this impact must have looked at the time to the local fauna! During this cataclysmic event, tons of molten & semi-molten material were blasted into the upper atmosphere, then rained back down, cooling into a glass-like substance with a 98% silica content. This natural material is known as Tektite, which occurs elsewhere in the world due to other meteor impacts, though only from the Czech Republic has Moldavite (the rich green variety of Tektite) ever been discovered. Typically, regular Tektites are pitch black, with very thin examples showing a brownish yellow to a muddy green-yellow color. This one features a number of octahedral and cubotahedral crystals dotted across the piece, with flattened Gold crystals serving as their “matrix”. Fully crystallized all around. The largest crystal is 3 mm wide and shows both cubic and octahedral faces, all with fantastic luster! (Front and center of the specimen.) In most cases, crystallized Gold forms as flattened crystals with varied structure. It’s unusual to have more 3D crystals, especially fully fleshed out, as they will often have a deeply hoppered structure instead. There are a few such crystals on this piece, save for the largest, which is indeed truly fully formed. Better in person too! There’s a bit of Silver in this one too, as evidenced by the cooler hue of the Gold. I’m not sure of the actual ratio here, but beyond a certain point, Gold alloyed with Silver is referred to as Electrum. Compared to nuggets, crystallized Gold is incredibly rare, even more so compared to Gold extracted from ore. This specimen comes out of my personal collection and ticks a lot of boxes for me, personally. It’s available though... AVAILABLE - Azurite sun on Kaolinite matrix from Malbunka Copper Mine, Areyonga, Northern Territory, Australia 🇦🇺 A) 8.3 x 5.6 x 3.2 cm DM or comment for more info/to purchase! 💎 Paypal or venmo accepted. An aesthetic specimen featuring a single Azurite sun 2.8 cm across, on a cream colored Kaolinite matrix. Nicely balanced! Azurite “suns” are unique in the mineral world and were found only at the Malbunka Copper mine, around 2009/2010. Instead of growing into prismatic, euhedral crystals, the Azurites from here formed laterally as flattened discs in seams of Kaolinite clay. Having unsuccessfully tried to pierce through the clay layers, they instead grew along the path of least resistance, in an electric blue color with interesting growth structures on the faces of the “suns”. Up close, you can clearly see the radial direction of growth and the numerous faces of thousands of micro crystals that compose each disk. It’s not inaccurate to say that the unique growth conditions of this locality has produced some of the most distinctive and dramatic Azurite specimens on Earth. At first glance, it’s almost hard to believe they’re real! AVAILABLE - Two Hollow Siderite epimorphs of Calcite crystals from Broken Hill Mine, Aggeneys, Namaqualand, Northern Cape Province, South Africa 🇿🇦 Two individual specimens here. A) 5.4 x 4.2 x 4.4 cm B) 3.9 x 2.4 x 2.5 cm DM or comment for more info/to purchase! 💎 Paypal or venmo accepted. A) The first piece is a single Siderite shell in the barrel shape of the original Calcite crystal it encapsulated. (This is called an epimorph when one mineral coats or otherwise completely grows over another species, then remains after the older mineral dissolves away.) You can readily see the faithful preservation of the modified scalenohedral Calcite structure, now in a thin, chocolaty & tan Siderite! The Calcite is long gone, most likely because of an increase in acidity of the specimen’s native environment underground, which over time completely dissolved the Calcite. There is damage to the bottom, which is actually a good thing, as it nicely exposes the interior of the cast - clearly showing off the odd hollow nature of the piece and a central knob of matrix that also shows Siderite growth. An added bonus is a subtle iridescence across the outer surface of the Siderite, which also features an interesting growth texture, as it really is just hundreds of smaller Siderite crystals that fused together as they grew over the Calcite before it dissolved. Both pieces are from a unique 2006 find at the Broken Hill Mine in South Africa. B) This one is a little different; two main Siderite casts in a lighter bronze color are nicely propped on a rocky matrix with Quartz and much smaller Siderite xtls. The upper crystal has an exposed opening on top, towards the back. This one displays well from multiple angles and is also the more affordable of the two pieces, though the first piece isn’t expensive either! A brilliant, blueberry blue Sapphire crystal 1.2 cm wide is perched on a matrix of shiny Biotite Mica schist. This one has very good luster and features some interesting trigonal growths on its c-face. Also fluorescent under longwave ultraviolet light, as shown in the video. (I used a LW UV laser here. Under a UV bulb, the fluorescence will not be quite as intense.) I think the crystal is well balanced with the amount of matrix present. A classic example of canary yellow Sulfur crystals to 1.4 cm wide, on a bed of sharp, off white Celestite crystals that grew over an older generation of Celestite that itself replaced a hexagonal Aragonite! I love when pieces like this have a story to tell. Fully crystallized on the reverse as well! When one mineral replaces another species, it’s called a pseudomorph. This replacement occurs down to the molecular level and can often produce striking mineral specimens, depicting the original mineral’s outward structure while being partially or completely composed of the newer mineral that replaced the original species! The Cozzo Disi mine is one of several in the Agrigento province of western Sicily that are collectively world famous for their fine and exceptional Sulfur crystals. The structure and gemmy quality of the crystals produced from this region set the standard for the species, and are considered true classics of the mineral world. It is interesting to note that Sulfur is one of the few native elements to form such euhedral crystals naturally! Five Red Beryl crystals up for grabs... Red Beryl is one of the rarest mineral species on earth, easily in the top 10. Found in only a small handful of localities, most of which are close together in Utah, Red Beryl is a highly desirable mineral and is simply not widely available compared to most other species. Over the years I’ve heard some interesting comparisons, such as for every 150,000 Diamond crystals ever recovered, only one Red Beryl crystal was found, and something like there being a total of 60 lbs. of Red Beryl crystals ever mined. Regardless of those figures, Red Beryl IS as scarce as they imply. It also goes by the name of Red Emerald, and used to be named Bixbite in honor of Maynard Bixby, the man who discovered it in the Thomas Range of Utah in 1904. The name Bixbite was dropped in favor of Red Beryl since another mineral named Bixbyite (also named after him) would cause confusion between the two species. (At least on paper. Bixbyite typically forms dark, metallic, cubic crystals.) The largest crystal measures 4 mm wide and is actually composed of a cubic Boleite at its core, hosting both Paraboleite and Cumengeite epitaxially grown on its faces. Boleite itself is a very rare silver halide mineral, along with Paraboleite and especially Cumengeite which are even more rare! Matrix examples of these species are - you guessed it - rare. There’s a theme here, lol. Given how delicate the matrix can be, and how much easier it was to just pop out the crystals in situ, most of what’s been available are just loose individual crystals. Having all three related minerals on one piece, on a matrix specimen of this size, is a treat! The matrix is a mix of cream colored Anglesite and Selenite with a bit of earthy clay here and there. The Selenite is semitransparent and has an interesting craggy structure with a satiny luster. (Mostly present on the side opposite of the largest Boleite/Paraboleite/Cumengeite crystal.) There are a few more, smaller crystals as well, though they seem to be a combo of Paraboleite on Boleite, sans Cumengeite. With a loupe, this piece is another world to explore!
