good omens but aziraphale starts telling people coming to his bookshop that he used to be a vicar to explain why he knows so much about religion but then he realises that people might start questioning why he isn't a vicar anymore. so he thinks up an entire backstory, how he connected with religion early on and realised that he didn't see the option of finding a wife and having kids, back then in the tiny village he lived in, there wasn't really any alternative to that life. so he became a vicar. one day a very lost traveller stumbled into his church, dark sunglasses and flaming red hair, making him see there IS a life out there for him, doing the things he loves. he thinks involving crowley in this story makes sense because he's always in the bookshop anyway. people assume things. so why not use them to his advantage? it's not too far removed from the truth either.
