Top: in the ending to New Super Mario Bros. 2, the Koopalings are seen using their large Koopa Clown Car to transport Bowser after his defeat, whereby he is hanging from it by his tail. As the Koopalings and Bowser move during this, it is natural to assume that it is their regular 3D models being used in this scene.
Bottom: however, this is not the case. Evidently, the developers found that putting the full models of all the Koopalings, Bowser, Mario and Peach in the same scene would be too taxing on the Nintendo 3DS hardware, and simplified the scene by using unique nearly-flat models of them that use a fraction of the polygons. Here, the Bowser model is shown in a model viewer.
While the model appears legitimately three-dimensional when viewed from a small intended range of angles, tilting it further than intended reveals its true nature.
