Lav goes to Tokyo (4&5/6): Shopping Sprees
Tumblr media
I deserve a high-five for successfully sticking to my DIY itinerary for my sweet and short ‘bleisure’ in Tokyo, Japan. Excel-ing my comprehensive plan was worth it after all. Unfortunately, the ‘Budget’ column was irrelevant for I spent WAY OVER than the self-imposed shopping limit. Who can’t resist if you’ve been itching to go to Tokyo since you were a nursery?
 No regrets?
Tumblr media
This photo was taken after spending a month worth of my salary on my first day in Tokyo.
*That’s my bed in the background. It’s evident I’m most excited to play with my new Totoro plushie and Sailormoon gachapons.*
Asakusa & Oshiage
 Tokyo Skytree
Tumblr media
When I was drafting my itinerary last April, I found out that the Tokyo Skytree is holding an “Attack on Skytree” exhibit at the Floor 450. I decided to allot more Yen to buy the extra ticket and the special merchandise only available on the floor. I got my sister, the person who influenced me to watch the anime series, three gachapons (i.e. two key chains and one screen featuring the titan shifters), a gold medallion-style keychain, and a keychain featuring Eren biting his left hand. I bought myself the Attack on Skytree tote bag. LOOK AT LEVI. WHO CAN’T RESIST THAT FACE?! Like, really?! And lastly, I can’t skip the Tokyo Skytree gift shop. Of course, I want to buy many, but my budget won’t allow me to do so. In the end, I only got a gold 5th anniversary miniature of Tokyo Skytree and a magnet. There’s one more gift shop in the lobby and it is much bigger than the one in Floor 350. Don’t spend everything when you’re up there. I swear.
 Donguri Kyowakoku
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I AM STILL MAD FOR NOT GETTING A TICKET TO THE STUDIO GHIBLI MUSEUM. I didn’t know they sold out fast. My hotel is just a few stations away from Mitaka. :(  Anyway, this store is easy to find since it is along the stairs heading to the Tokyo Skytree. I thought my Yen 4,000 budget would be enough. I went beyond that because the tax-exemption applies for purchases for Yen 5,000 and above. On my shopping list are a Totoro plushie and a wallet. However, I saw this adorable Pochi purse and picked it up immediately. I also got a set of two limited edition Totoro finger puppets. I can’t find affordable merchandise for my favorite Studio Ghibli films (i.e. Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke, and Laputa: Castle in the Sky). I really want the Castle in the Sky tote bag but I already my Attack on Skytree tote bag. I dropped it or else I’ll end up suffering from the “Tote Life”
Tumblr media
(WHO WATCH WE BARE BEARS? RAISE YOUR HANDS!) As a result, I took home four more finger puppets -- Princess Mononoke, Sheeta, the Baron, and Louise.
  Pokemon Center Skytree Town
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went to the Pokemon Center for nostalgia purposes. My siblings and I used to fight over a Gameboy to take turns on playing Pokemon. I’m glad to see that one of our childhood favorites has remained popular decades later. This is definitely a haul dedicated to my siblings. I bought two Master Balls (each has a stamp and candies which according to my sister tastes like cough drops), Nanoblocks (Mewtwo and Gyarados), coin purses (Pikachu and a Pokeball), and a letter ‘R’ keychain (for my brother). I did not get a keychain for my sister because I already bought her an Attack on Titan keychain. I guess those are enough. A saleslady gave me a plastic postcard featuring the date I visited Pokemon Center. Hooray for a free souvenir!
  Nakamise Street
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ahhhhh, the famous Nakamise street. As I have said in my previous post, I was kind of disappointed. Price range is not cheap. I advise you guys to see the after-immigration duty-free shops instead.  I ended up with one magnet featuring the gate to the street. Don’t fret yet! Nakamise is great for sightseeing and food tripping. *drools*
    Akihabara
 Akihabara Gachapon Kaikan
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
FINALLY. I always wanted a LEGIT capsule toy since I was a kid. *the machines we have in the Philippines are not as enjoyable as those in Japan* You can find gachapon machines in train stations, convenient stores, etc. If you want a complete and satisfying gachapon experience, you’ve got to visit the Akihabara Gachapon Kaikan. I’m on the lookout for Sailor Moon gachapons. I got my sister some Star Wars gachapons (which I did not open). I’m not pretty sure if getting the same pretty toy THRICE is a good luck or the machine is just messing up with me. BTW, I GOT USAGI’S ENGAGEMENT RING.
  Don Quijote
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to visit this branch of ‘’Donki” so I have one more reason to walk around Akihabara. Also, I get to catch some maids performing in the renowned maid cafés. I bought some matcha-flavored sweets for my officemates and relatives. And of course, I bought a bottle of Cure Natural Aqua Gel. I’m running out of my favorite peeling gel and it’s Php 300 (USD 6) cheaper than the Philippines. PLUS, Don Quijote is a tax-free shop!
*Anecdote: There was a long line in the tax-free counter. I’m far from the line and there were Republic of China Passport Holders in front of me. A Donki staff asked if they can transfer to another counter because the line keeps on getting longer. No one wanted to transfer until the staff reached me. I agreed and they immediately grabbed my baskets at walked downstairs. It’s kind of cool because my feet were swelling big time after all the walking, and then now I have the counter and three Donki staff for myself only.*
    Shibuya
 Bic Camera
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHEAP CASIO WRISTWATCHES. HOW CAN I SAY NO TO THESE?! I was walking around the famous Shibuya crossing a lot of times until the display of Casio watches caught my attention. Damn. I mean, DAAAYUM. I bought these for my siblings. My trip to Tokyo coincides with their birthdays. My shopping list prioritizes stuff I believe my siblings would like to receive. IF I ONLY HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY THE GADGETS BEING SOLD FOR A CHEAPER PRICE VS. THE PHILIPPINES... ugh.
  Uniqlo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Initially, I’m not planning to visit Uniqlo because WE HAVE A LOT IN THE PHILIPPINES. However, I realized ‘souvenir shirts’ in Uniqlo are cheaper compared to the ones being sold at the airport and in Nakamise street. I went to their branch in Shibuya. I got one each for my family. Aside from the shirts, I also bought two ¾ pants and seamless underwear. I forgot to include in the photo the sunglasses I bought for my father. When converted to Philippine peso, I got everything for Php 5,000+ (USD 100*). Thank god for tax-exemption!
   Shinjuku
 Daiso
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s a small Daiso near the hotel I stayed in. I got to buy some small souvenirs for my bosses. How adorable that small memo stands! AND CAN WE PLEASE APPRECIATE THOSE YEN 100 FANS. These are for my mom and some relatives. DEFINE BARGAIN. Further, I remember my mom requested me to buy some wedding cards, so I took advantage of the cheap stationary section of Daiso. It is truly cheaper to buy souvenirs here! Everything cost me only Yen 800+. I may not be able to see Harajuku and the big Daiso they have there. With a very limited budget, I’m pretty happy with my haul.
 24hr convenient store in Ichigaya
Tumblr media
I saw from their window display that they carry some popular Japanese cosmetic brands. I’m not sure the name of the store but the shopping bag says “smile everyday!”. Although I’m not really fond of trying skin care products due to my extremely sensitive skin condition, I still decided to get a look. Good thing I did. I found these really cute nail polish bottles. I decided to pick some colors that have been on my wishlist for a long time. The color range may not be as vast as OPI’s or Sally Hansen’s. I’m in Tokyo, so why not try some local nail products!?
   Ginza
 Hakuhinkan Toy Park
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I found some Tokyo 2020 official merchandise outside the Toy Park. I got a t-shirt for myself and a polo shirt for my dad. The merchandise does not come cheap. I did not buy a lot in the Toy Park because I already bought most of the character goods and toys I have on my shopping list. AND I’M ALREADY RUNNING OUT OF YEN WHEN I WENT TO GINZA. I saw some unique flavors of KitKat and bought some. Regretfully, I spent most of my time in Hakuhinkan window shopping. I’ll definitely visit this place on my future visits to Tokyo with a MUCH BIGGER BUDGET. *finger-crossed*
    Narita Airport
Tumblr media
I can’t get enough snacks so I shopped for more in the Airport. Surprisingly, I was impressed how diverse the price range of products in the airport. You’ll find both overpriced and affordable goods so be vigilant! Haha! I should have saved more Yen for airport shopping.
Tumblr media
I’d been looking for a Shiseido eyelash curler since I arrived in Tokyo only to find one on my departure. AFTER ALL THE TROUBLE I DID. HAHAHAHA. Anyway, it is all worth it, because this retails at PHP 1,300 (USD 26)* in the Philippines. If I converted its Japan price to PH Peso, it only costs Php 450 (USD 9)*. 1,300 VERSUS 450. Since I’m low on cash at this time, I decided to make use of my JCB credit card and ticked off the last product I have on my shopping list.
Tumblr media
That’s it for my Tokyo, Japan haul!
  Until next time,
Tumblr media
PS: I forgot to post this. Initially, I divided my shopping sprees into two separate posts. I decided to combine the two, post it today, and publish the last part of my Tokyo series tomorrow, 31 December 2017.

Lav goes to Tokyo (3/6): Shibuya, Ichigaya, and UTokyo
Tumblr media
Guess how many times I crossed the world-famous Shibuya crossing.
Hint: I don’t know either.
Shibuya
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I frequent Shibuya crossing during my trip in Tokyo because the host university of the conference I attended to is just a few minutes away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some frames from few of the numerous videos I took while crossing the streets. It was surreal! I don’t know why I’m itching to hug someone randomly and walk away like nothing happened. Haha!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BIC Camera is one of the reasons I kept coming back to the crossing after the conference. I’m guilty of spending hours window shopping in Shibuya. I have to consult with my sister first before buying anything in BIC Camera. The Baby-G’s are so tempting, but I’m happy with my Philip Stein. I’M DONE WITH MY BABY-G PHASE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel bad I didn’t try any food here. I always leave the University with a full stomach. I guess sight-seeing in Shibuya is one way to satisfy my wondering eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is a trip to Shibuya without visiting Hachiko? Unfortunately, I failed to take decent photos of Hachiko. There are a lot of people surrounding the statue. Though I didn’t have a selfie with Hachiko, I’m fine I get to see the statue in person. Afterall, I have one more important statue to visit! *wink*
Ichigaya
Tumblr media
I was assigned to a hotel located in Ichigaya. It is far from the conference venue but the addition of the river and strategic subway lines in the area makes it easier for me to plan my itinerary.
Tumblr media
This is the view from my hotel room.
Tumblr media
This mirror-shot was taken on my first day in Japan.
Tumblr media
Here’s my first dinner in Japan. There’s my auntie. *Her Japanese husband took the photo* They treated me a dinner in a sushi place near the hotel and even gave me some gifts. If I only have more free time, we could tour Tokyo together. THERE’S ALWAYS A NEXT TIME. *wink*
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During my brief free time, I went to the Ichigaya Kamegaoka Hachimangu Shrine. I did some research on the Shrine previously. Apparently, it allows individuals to pray with their pets.
The above pictures show a smaller shrine in between of the stairs. I wasn’t able to capture my journey to the top because the steps are really steep. I want to free my hands from anything. I was catching my breath then I saw myself in a different environment.
The University of Tokyo
Tumblr media
A mirror-shot in the Tokyo Metro. Another perk of the hotel’s location is it is just a few stations away from Todai-mae.
Tumblr media
THE SCHOOL OF ATHENS IN TODAI-MAE STATION?!
Tumblr media
The University of Tokyo is my first dream university. I can say I’m influenced by the anime series I watched back then. Even if the ‘reunion statue’ did not exist, I would still include UTokyo in my itinerary.
Tumblr media
According to Google Maps, I just have to turn left to the first gate I’m going to encounter. It’s a short walk from Todai-Mae Station Exit 1, but as a first-time solo traveler in Japan, I can’t fully rely on my instinct. I saw some foreigners walking in the same direction as me. I ended up following the crowd. I turned left at a huge gate, a guard greeted me, and then there’s the statue!
Tumblr media
I CRIED.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JUST LOOK AT THEIR FACES. HUHUHU.
Tumblr media
Hachiko and Prof. Ueno statue from a far.
They deserve more attention than the one in Shibuya IMO. <3
Tumblr media
Hachiko in Shibuya, a shrine that accommodates pets, and Hachiko-Prof. Ueno in UTokyo? You can say this is a post dedicated to dog lovers.
All the best,
Tumblr media

Lav goes to Tokyo (2/6): Asakusa, Akihabara, and Ginza
Tumblr media
HEAD-TURNING INFRASTRUCTURES IN ONE PHOTO. #SQUADGOALS
Asakusa
Tumblr media
After Oshiage, I walked to Nakamise Shopping Street. I checked the map outside Tokyo Solamachi but I can’t figure out which direction should I take. Haha! I took a picture and asked a uniformed personnel in the parking lot. He told me to turn left to Asakusa-Dori, take the bridge and go straight ahead. It was a very peaceful noontime. Somehow, I forgot how painful my legs are.
Tumblr media
Walking from the street does not give a good view of the famous Asahi ‘beer’ building, so I have to rely on the street signs. There would be two roads in front of me. I remember what the guy said about following Asakusa-Dori. I turned right and continued strolling along Asakusa-Dori. A few minutes later, I got to see the bridge and the ‘flame’ building. YES. Good thing there are only a few people around the vicinity of the Asahi buildings. I LOST MY BALANCE AND ALMOST FELL FLAT ON THE GROUND. Luckily my right hand was able to catch my weight or else I’ll end up kissing the ground. EXHAUSTION + EXCITEMENT = Not a good idea.
Tumblr media
I tried taking selfies with the buildings, but I hated the results. TBH It’s better when my face is not on it. I stayed near the River Cruise to adore the view and take more pictures. After all, I need a rest from all the walking. Also, THANK GOD FOR VENDING MACHINESSSS.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I saw the familiar gate and found myself situated in the lively street of Nakamise. My agenda? FOOD TRIP.
Tumblr media
I don’t know why but I’m expecting the souvenir shops to be cheap. To my disappointment, the price range does not largely differ from Narita and Tokyo Solamachi. To Sensoji Temple I go!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I lit up an incense and inhaled smoke more than the capacity of my lungs. It was windy and I stayed in the direction where it goes. I washed my hands and went to the Temple. I did not get me some fortune for I can’t read the Japanese alphabet. I skipped the lucky charm shopping.
Tumblr media
Tokyo Skytree, I miss you already. :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Afterward, I went back to Nakamise and decided to take the subway at the Asakusa station. On my itinerary, I’m planning to see Daiso Asakusa. Considering my physical state, I knew I can’t afford to do so. I have to use my remaining energy for something else.
Akihabara
Tumblr media
Next on my list is Akihabara! Oh, how I miss those days when anime is life. I may not be that geek but Akihabara didn’t feel strange to me. I LOVE IT. Does it mean I kept in touch with my inner otaku all these years? Haha!
Tumblr media
I got confused as I got out of the Suehirocho station. I checked the map I have and the map on the street. I’m targeting the Akihabara Gachapon Kaikan. I realized I went to the opposite direction. YES, I LOVE PAIN. While walking along the road, I found the Gachapon Kaikan from distance. It turns out I was on the wrong side. Oops. MORE WALKING = MORE SIGHT-SEEING = LESS ENERGY TO KEEP ME BALANCED. Huhu! I knew I’ll end up with two full shopping bags on my first day, but I didn’t expect it to be this exhausting.
Tumblr media
NUMEROUS CHILDHOOD DREAMS WITHIN A CHILDHOOD DREAM. I made my way to the Akihabara Gachapon Kaikan! *celebratory dance* I went crazy over the Sailor Moon gachapons. What do I expect? Haha! My sister wants to get anything Final Fantasy in Akihabara. I failed on this mission. To compensate, I got some Star Wars gachapons for her.
Tumblr media
After my Gachapon quest, I crossed the road again to check more arcades, Animate, and Don Quijote. As a first-time solo traveler with a very limited budget, I just went window shopping and people watching. AT LEAST I HAD FUN. AND JUST BECAUSE, I left Don Quijote with a bigger shopping bag. OH NO. I KNEW IT.  I kind of hate and proud of myself for a good haul at the same time. You can say I had a major Rebecca Bloomwood moment in Akihabara.
At this time, I’m confident I’ll find my way to the JR Akihabara Station. HOLY SHIT. THERE ARE SALES EVERYWHERE. IT’S HARD TO LOOK STRAIGHT. IMAGINE MY AGONY.
Tumblr media
I’m actually planning to go to Ginza before I check-in at my hotel in Ichigaya. But looking at my two heavy shopping bags, my five (5) kilo hand carry-on shoulder bag, and my swollen feet, I knew I will not make it alive in Ginza. HAHAHAHA. Seriously.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The lines are not that long, but I’m not really hungry this time and I have to meet my auntie that night.
Tumblr media
But first, THREE MINI PABLO CHEESE TARTS PLEASE.
Ginza
Tumblr media
Moving forward on my last full day in Tokyo, I resumed my delayed visit to Ginza. I only have one goal here and that is the Hakuhinkan Toy Park.
Tumblr media
Outside the Toy Park is the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Official Merchandise! I had a mini heart attack for seeing great character merchandise one after the another. As I have emphasized my small budget over and over, the Toy Park became a great venue for window shopping. I enjoyed it too much I forgot to bring out my phone. Well, I was able to take some shots on the first two floors but zero pictures on the rest. Haha! If you check the floor map, then you’ll have an idea how much a young-at-heart, like me, will enjoy a trip to Hakuhinkan!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a short shopping and long window shopping in the toy park, I don’t mind walking along Ginza. I love to take pictures of the street!
Tumblr media
I can’t wait to share the third part of my “Lav goes to Tokyo” series!
All the best,

Lav goes to Tokyo (1/6): Oshiage
Tumblr media
If you’ve seen my recent updates on my social media accounts, you know I just flew (solo!) to Tokyo, Japan for a business-leisure trip. Before I dwell on the main purpose of my travel, I’ll go over the places I visited through several blog posts. First on my roll is Oshiage.
Tokyo Skytree
Tumblr media
My first destination in Tokyo is the Tokyo Skytree. Our plane arrived at 6:25 am and I reached Narita Airport Terminal 2 at 7:20 am. I let my suitcase go to the hotel before me for a hands-free tour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went to the ticketing counter and told the officer that I want to go to the Tokyo Skytree. She gave me some directions and I paid for my ticket. I have to rush because the train will leave in 20 minutes. It’s my first time in Japan, so I’m not yet confident I can find the correct platform within 20 minutes. Haha! Fortunately, I made it! I rode the Narita Sky Access Train to Haneda Airport at 7:40 am and disembarked at the Oshiage Station an hour later.
Tumblr media
I walked for a few minutes before I saw the head of the Colossal Titan. It was such a relief to know I’m not lost. Who knew seeing the Colossal Titan from nowhere would free me from my anxiety?!
Reading from other blogs and vlogs, the ticket counter is located on the fourth floor. I took the escalator beside the Colossal Titan. However, the next escalator is closed. Good thing there are other signs directing to the ticket counter. I saw myself outside the building. I looked up and adored the Tokyo Skytree. It’s not that confusing anymore with the tower insight.
I went upstairs and saw the Donguri Kyowakoku store. I got excited but it’s still closed. I continued my search for the ticket counter. A few minutes more and I found a group of teenagers in their school uniform lining up outside a door. I thought it must be the entrance to the tower. AND I’M NOT MISTAKEN.
Tumblr media
I was welcomed by many since I’m the only one in the ticket counter. At 8:55 am, I’m at the Floor 350. THAT WAS A PRETTY SMOOTH RIDE.
Tumblr media
I can’t wait to see the Attack on Skytree theme at Floor 450, so I walked around floor 350, went to the ticket counter, and bought the Tembo Galleria ticket.
Tumblr media
The elevator ride is a wonder in itself. The Attack on Titan theme songs were playing in the background and a part of the ceiling is made of glass. You can peek inside the tower. No titan spotted! Haha! DAMN. As the elevator opened, another head of the Colossal Titan welcomed me.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I was too distracted by the Attack on Titan decorations in Floor 450/Tembo Galleria. AND THEN I SAW SOME STUDENTS SURROUNDING THE ATTACK ON TITAN GACHAPONS. I knew I have to find my way through the crowd.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In front of the gachapon area are the life-size statues of Eren and Levi, and the Attack on Skytree merchandise store (exclusive at Floor 450). I CAN’T CONTAIN MY HAPPINESS. I decided to connect my Blackberry to the free wifi and message my sister. Her last message to me was a question if I made my way to Tokyo. In response, I sent her my selfie with the Eren statue with the caption, “Not yet. We’re still in Wall Rose.” Haha! Team Survey Corps represent!
Tumblr media
The exhibit will end soon. I understand why there is less Attack on Skytree merchandise left. AND LOOK AT EREN AND MIKASA ABOVE. Are they also after the Attack on Skytree tote bag?!
Tumblr media
Work it, boys!
Tumblr media
Will post my haul at the latter part of this series.
Tumblr media
What class of titan is this one? A five-inch class titan?
Tumblr media
Am I supposed to join them here in this photo?!
Tumblr media
You can barely see them but those are original sketches of Attack on Titan.
Tumblr media
That’s nice!
Tumblr media
I tried.
Tumblr media
After spending an hour on the Floor 450, I can hear my tummy grumbling and my lips getting cold. I knew I have to eat. I went to the Floor 340 where the Skytree Cafe features an Attack on Titan themed menu.
Tumblr media
There’s a cafe at floor 345 featuring a partnership with Sanrio to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Tokyo Skytree.
Tumblr media
I ordered the Destroying Pot Stew - a beef stew served in a bread bowl and with a green salad- and the Levi-approved Royal Milk Tea. These were my first meal in Japan. Once I removed the Colossal Titan cardboard on top and ate the bacon strips, the hot beef stew released some steam. IT LOOKS LIKE THE DISH RECREATED THE STEAM COMING FROM THE COLOSSAL TITAN. GENIUS. WOULD THIS MEAL TURN ME TO A TITAN SHIFTER?! LOL. The salad reminds me of the forest where the Survey Corps attempted to catch the Female Titan from Season 1. I spent one more hour on eating, shopping, and touring around.
Tumblr media
Also, you can find the glass floor at the Floor 340. It’s funny to see both kids and adults lying down and posing on the floor.
Tokyo Solamachi
Pokemon Center
Tumblr media
As I make my way out of the building, I sprinted to the mall, bought some water, and searched for the Pokemon Center. There are so many souvenirs and specialty shops inside but they failed to earn my time. Once I saw the prices of the products at the display I quickly turn my head away and proceed. Haha! No further inquiries needed!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Pokemon Center did not meet my expectations. Most of the products I have on my shopping list are out-of-stock. There are not too many prizes from the gachapon machines since there are several machines offering the same capsule toys. The space occupied is not that big as I thought it would be. One more frowning moment? NOT CHEAP.
Tumblr media
Despite everything, the visit was worth it. As someone who grew up playing Pokemon, it means a lot to come by an official Pokemon Center. With the nostalgic music playing in the background, the whole shopping experience was fulfilling.
Donguri Kyowakoku
Tumblr media
I did not expect too much. I HAVE TO REMIND MYSELF THAT THIS IS NOT THE STUDIO GHIBLI MUSEUM. Huhuhu! I should have done my research earlier. I didn’t know the tickets to the museum sold out fast. Prior my trip, I watched vlogs and noticed how average the store is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, you can get official Studio Ghibli merchandise here and see huge Totoro and Mei plushies. I’m fine with that.
Tumblr media
If you watched Whisper of the Heart, then let’s celebrate the reunion of the Baron and Louise. :”>
Tumblr media
Can you see my reflection?! Haha!
Tumblr media
As a solo traveler, reflection shots are one of the limited options to take travel selfies. Here’s a picture of my reflection and Mei lying on the tummy of Totoro. If you press the red button on the side, the display will light up and Mei and Totoro will move. I have to wait for the ‘show’ to end so I can see my reflection and take a picture. HAHAHA. Pity me.
I have a Yen 4,000 budget for this store but the lady in the cashier told me I have to purchase at least Yen 5,000 in order to be exempted from tax. Since the internet-famous No Face Coin Bank is sold out, I got to buy more finger puppets. Watch out for my haul!
Tumblr media
That’s it for the first leg of my Tokyo trip!
See you on my next post!

Update: Final grade is out, conference paper submitted
Tumblr media
I met the grade requirement to stay in the program (yes, I go to grad school with such mindset). I just survived my first year in graduate school. 30 more units to go. 🙃 What now?
I only took one subject this semester but papers transformed me into a....
Tumblr media
Despite the deadline I have for an upcoming post-graduate conference abroad, I prioritized the deadlines I had in grad school. Since I’m done with both tasks, I can finally work on my presentation, visa application, and this blog.
Lessons learned?
Tumblr media
A number of professors during my undergraduate studies advised us to continue writing and reading about your desired topics. I never knew how helpful it would be (and how faulty my habits are) until I began my graduate studies. Damn. How I wish I knew the best strategy for writing research papers during my undergrad thesis days. I’m kind of satisfied with the unintended consequences of my struggles on juggling two full-blown academic papers, one of which is graded and framed in a realist perspective, and the other has an opportunity to be published in a journal and follows a constructivist approach.
Tumblr media
I saw myself overwhelmed with all the references I have to gather, read, and review. Whenever I failed to meet my self-imposed deadlines, I became harsh to myself. For a moment, I hated myself for being incompetent and encountered numerous self-doubts. At least, at the end of the day, I managed to appreciate the little progress and eventually earned back my motivation.
Tumblr media
Resulting from my self-post-academic year-assessment, I realized I have ample of time to finish everything ahead of time and an allowance for last-minute revisions. I wondered where did those hours go? Contemplating. Contemplating about how bad I am as a sister, a college friend, and an officemate. Contemplating about the accomplishments I could have done. Contemplating if I could actually master the craft of research writing.Contemplating the days when I could have been productive.
I realized I did not utilize my time efficiently. One classmate in graduate school said the same thing to me. I could have changed my lifestyle right after it. However, why would I spend another time to contemplate on missed chances?
See every failure as an opportunity to learn.
Tumblr media
The struggles did not only reveal a better research writing strategy, time management, and the research topics I’m most passionate about. They also helped me to demonstrate what I am capable of. Rushing into everything, I overlooked the most important thing - allowing myself to grow first.
My behavior affected my relationship with my family, friends, and colleagues. I thought the way I balanced my tasks in graduate school and work could yield better results. Unfortunately, I ended up letting the small mistakes get the best of me. My perception of time and achievement are accompanied by the desire to provide material results rather than the desire to grow into someone I always wanted to be.
Life, no matter how harsh it can be, is worth living. We continue to grow, enhance our strengths, and embrace our weaknesses.
Sincerely,
Tumblr media
P.S. Due to my current scenario, I ran back to Studio Ghibli movies for wisdom and enlightenment. I declare this month as my Studio Ghibli appreciation month. *happy dance*
P.P.S. Spirited Away is not my favorite Studio Ghibli movie.

Update: Still writing...
Tumblr media
I celebrated my 22nd birthday yesterday, but I can’t afford to take a break from research writing. 💃 The second semester in graduate school ended last week, but I have one last paper to finish. 💪 I ended up cramming because I failed to meet the self-imposed deadlines. 😭
Tumblr media
Before I return posting my recent reads and favorite quotes, please raise your hands and offer your energy to me. 😭 😭 😭
See you real soon,

Must-read: Layag, European Classics in Filipino
Tumblr media
Layág (trans. v. to sail) is a collection of European classic short stories, selected by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic Czechia to the Philippines, the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru and Palau, His Excellency Jaroslav Olša, Jr., translated in Filipino.
BOOK LAUNCH
Tumblr media
If you have seen my post about this year’s Día del libro, then you know I was in seventh (book) heaven last saturday, 22 April 2017. I don’t want to go back how that day went, but I would like to emplhasize how I highly anticipated the book launch of Layag. I guess scanning my Facebook timeline for a few minutes pays off and liking the pages of major publishers in the country does not hurt. Moving on...
Ambassador Olša said this book project took more than two years to complete. It features classic short stories from Austria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, and Switzerland. The book is aimed to promote European literature to the Philippines. He also announced they are already planning on its second volume, which was hinted to feature contemporary European literature.
MEET THE BOOK
Tumblr media
I agree with Ambassador Olša’s statement which claims European literature, compared to its counterpart, has not given the recognition and readership it deserves. In my opinion, the wide knowledge of Filipinos on Western European literature and American literature has colonial roots, while Southeast Asian literature is gaining attention (thanks to the ever-integrating Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Other major Asian literature (i.e. Chinese, Japanese, and Indian) remains prominent as well (thanks to their ancient philosophies and their Filipino enthusiasts). As for African, Middle Eastern, and Latin American literature, I believe there’s still a need to heighten their presence in the country.
Reading literary works in Filipino, my native language, makes me realize how rich the latter is. Don’t get me wrong. I admire both Philippine and European Literature, but I appreciate our Filipino writers, whether they use English or Filipino, more!
To think that the editor is an ambassador, he is doing his job creatively and effectively (a biased-comment from a european studies major/bookhoarderworm)! The Czech Republic (CZECHIA? Uhhh...) must be proud. Launching this kind of project is an addition to my life goals!
GET YOUR COPY
Tumblr media
Layag will be available this May 2017 in all National Bookstore branches nationwide. Get your copy for PHP 250 (roughly US$ 5). Yaaas! The perk of getting a copy during the launch is I only have to pay PHP 200. *wink*
Tumblr media
Thank you very much for this initiative, Ambassador Olša!
Better days (and books) are coming,

Día del Libro 2017
Tumblr media
Can’t contain my excitement so I decided to take a break from my graduate school duties (huhu!) and to post about this year’s Día del Libro celebration! (yaaas!)
Tumblr media
Ribbon Cutting
Tumblr media
If you remember last year, I wasn’t able to catch the opening program and was welcomed with long lines. I learned my lesson and the mission was successful: I came an hour early! It means I have time to review for our Spanish class and take my second breakfast (#TeamHeavyBreakfast).
Actually, I’m done with my shopping spree even before the program started. Unfortunately, I did not anticipate how heavy my haul would be. Keep scrolling to know why!!!
BLAH BLAH BLAH
Tumblr media
Discounted books in Spanish, ¿cualquiera?

Book launch of Layag: European Classics in Filipino, published by Anvil Publishing.
The guy in green polo shirt is the Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines. He sat in the row next to me!

“Museo del Prado” at the Ayala Triangle Gardens!
MY *HEAVY BREATHING* HAUL!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I bought two shirts from Instituto Cervantes (IC) Manila.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Free books that I got for buying shirts from IC Manila. (One shirt = One receipt = One book) You may ask how come I only bought two shirts and have three books for free. Well, since I’m an early bird, I managed to get some of the best books up for grabs. Before a guy held this 2-volume SEALED package, I saw this one first and asked an IC Manila professor if the two books require two receipts. He said it’s not. I waited for the other customer to put it down. HAHAHA. Once he did, I immediately took it and gave my receipt.
Tumblr media
All titles are discounted for 20% at the FullyBooked stall! I’ve been wanting a hard copy of this book. Hooray!
Tumblr media
The vendor recommended this to me. I told her I’m still on my Nivel B1 class in Spanish. She said this book is easy to read. I hope I’m not wrong for trusting her!
Tumblr media
Isn’t it interesting?!?!
Tumblr media
To lessen the traffic volume in light of the ASEAN Summit in the Philippines, 28 April (Friday) is declared as a non-working holiday in Metro Manila. ANOTHER LONG WEEKEND. HOORAY!
I promise to post about Layag: European Classics in Filipino (and to write my academic papers, of course. *cries* #SendHelp).
¡Feliz Día del Libro!

From 199x - 2017
Tumblr media
Derived from the famous “transformation challenge” on Facebook, I decided to show my pictures from 199x to 2017 here on my blog.
199x
Tumblr media
I’m not sure when was this exactly taken, but I’m pretty sure I was forced to pose in front of the camera. As you can see, I grabbed our bonsai for comfort to ease my anxiety. Haha! Also, at a very young age, my skin tone is naturally already uneven.
2001
Tumblr media
At a tender age of six, I’m aware how awful my teeth were (especially if you have bullies who reminds you every day) that is why I don’t show them when I smile or as possible as I can. Eeep!
2008
Tumblr media
I failed to gather photos to show the transformation of the grade schooler Lav. Look at that hair! As I grew older, I noticed how my hair became wavy, frizzy, and voluminous. No matter how crazy I brushed my hair, it won’t behave! I hated it. In the end, my hair was “devirginized“ in this year. Obviously, the treatment expired even before it reached its shelf life.
2009
Tumblr media
Still not fond of showing my teeth. I’M IN HIGH SCHOOL AND MY INSECURITIES ARE IN STEROIDS. I vowed to have my hair straightened every year. It’s pricey and time-consuming, but I lived by the assumption that I have to be pretty in order to have a great high school experience. I’m tired of insults and being left out in class. Moreover, this is also the year I discovered what I have all along is eczema.
2010
Tumblr media
Still showing off my no-teeth smile and spa-treated hair. At this age, I kind of “accepted” my insecurities. Back then, I was thinking of getting a job right after college and saving up for a cosmetic surgery. THAT’S HOW SERIOUS I AM WITH MY INSECURITIES.
2011
Tumblr media
On the first month of my junior year in high school (it was 2010), my parents let me choose between a brand new piano or dental braces. The first few months were as painful as the decision to give up my dream piano. On 2011, I can finally smile without hiding my teeth (or without hurting myself). Unfortunately, no smile can fade the pain I feel inside. (Say whaaat) I’m a frustrated pianist. This time I wished to have my own house before I turn 30 and the first thing I would put in my house is a piano.
2012
Tumblr media
2012 marked the end of my ‘dark ages’ and the beginning of my ‘enlightenment period’. I am finally away from the aggressive ‘structure’ and ‘agents’ that put me down for years. This photo was taken in my first semester and first year in De La Salle University (DLSU). Aside from its academic accomplishments and notable alumni, my alma mater was known for being one of the expensive private universities in the country. There are stereotypes for Lasallians which definitely do not suit me. Honestly, I was afraid I will be bullied in DLSU. However, DLSU offers my dream course (Again, LSE is my dream school). I have to be brave and learn to love my insecurities if I want to survive DLSU. Most importantly, my alma mater boasts an incredibly handsome population. No wonder I developed a “smiling face” as my classmates and professors noticed. HAHAHA!
2013
Tumblr media
OH NO. I’M STARTING TO GAIN WEIGHT. HAHAHA. After undergoing self-assessment and a year without bullies, I chose to bring back my naturally wavy, frizzy, and voluminous hair. I don’t have plans to have my hair treated again. I’m sorry to my classmates who were deceived by my spa-treated straight hair.
2014
Tumblr media
CAN’T. STOP. STRESS. EATING. This is also the year I developed psoriasis. Despite my obvious weight gain, metal mouth, failure to reach the minimum CGPA for latin honors, and more skin allergies, I did not feel less empowered. I remained motivated to finish college with flying colors.
EARLY 2015:
STILL CHUBBY
Tumblr media
I learned the no-brush hair trick and finally embraced the waves of my hair.
LATE 2015:
WEIGHTLOSS AND REMOVAL OF DENTAL BRACES
Tumblr media
This is the year I launched my “Operation Balik Alindog” (trans. “Bring Your Charm Back”) campaign. I began working out (a.k.a. doing yoga in my room) after we defended and passed our undergraduate thesis. And on 30 November 2015, after five years and five months, I finally have the smile I always dreamed of. I still have a decade to save up for my own place and buy a piano.
EARLY 2016:
SPORTING A MOANA-LIKE HAIR
Tumblr media
Just imagine how heavy this hair is.
LATE 2016: NEW ADMINISTRATION, NEW HAIR
Tumblr media
With the 2016 Presidential Elections, I thought, “why not wait for the new administration to take over before I cut my hair short?”
2017
Tumblr media
Inspired by the Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, I am confidently beautiful with a heart big books. Now that’s a really poor pun. I’m sorry!
I’m still on a research break! This post has been in my draft folder for weeks and I need to take a break from my academic readings. HAHAHA. I’m really bad in making excuses for my procrastination.
I will be back again to post my 2017 Día del Libro experience. Then, I’ll spend my free time for the whole month of May (my birthday month!) to finish my requirements in graduate school and my conference paper.
I can’t promise any birthday posts, but I’m requesting you guys to pray for my visa application (approved visa means NEW TRAVEL VIDEO BLOG!!!). Hahaha!
Have a fulfilling week ahead,
Tumblr media
