“Oh gosh, you can’t seriously be asking me that,” Yugi panicked. He was starting to really dislike this “sinday” nonsense. He was rubbish at these sort of games, anyways.

“Okay, uh…I guess if I had to choose…” He avoided eye contact like the plague as he tried to build up the courage to say it out loud. He took a deep breath before blurting it all out at once.

“FuckKaibaMarryJoeyKillRyou.” He covered his face with his hands, embarrassed. There. He did it. “Obviously I would never harm Ryou though! It’s just…I’ve been friends with Joey the longest so he would make the most sense to–” Yugi continued to ramble on and on to try to awkwardly rationalize his decision. He’s the type to over explain himself when he’s nervous.

The second he reached his room he broke...

The second he reached his room he broke. The door was slammed shut behind him, and his fingers moved quickly to lock it. Each breath he took was harsh, his throat dry and stale. It hurt, God did it hurt. He’d never let himself break like this, especially in front of that man. Yugi was falling apart at his seems, just when he thought he’d finally placed himself all together. Maybe it was just that he’d never been together from the start. He’d been patched up and mended, his friends sewing up the holes where they could see, but it wasn’t all of them. All it would take was pulling the right string. One small tug and everything he’d worked for would come undone.

Oh boy had it come undone.

Yugi had been so furious, so angry that Kaiba tried to pass him off. To say his reasons were meaningless, and that giving up was the best option. What a ludicrous thought. These reasons were the reason Yugi kept himself so chipper, why he tried so hard. He had made promises, and all through his life he worked hard to make sure he never broke them.  Now it felt like the world was crumbling beneath his feet.

Sliding down, he sat himself with his knees tucked close to his body, head buried as deep in as he could get it. Tears came so readily now, and he let them. Sobs wracked his body hard as he stayed in a huddled ball. He hadn’t cried like this since he’d watched the Pharaoh make his journey back to his world. He’d kept his emotions in check as best as he could. He’d been strong, but now he was tired. So very tired, and far too weak to keep holding the dam back any longer.

He was so alone, in a place surrounded by friends and family, he’d never felt so alone before. It started with Atem, just like gaining his friends had, and now it felt like it was ending with him. Everyone was there to try and help, but he was still failing on his own. He’d failed to gain the courage to say what he needed the first time around, he’d failed to allow Kaiba to feel comfortable around him, and it felt like he’d failed to keep his promises. Running off the way he had, not standing and waiting to see what the CEO would come back with, wasn’t that just like telling him that he couldn’t do this? Yugi had just told Seto he wanted to be his friend, that he would go to any length to gain that friendship; and then he got frightened and backed out. Maybe he felt this alone because he felt he had no one else who knew his pain.

It had been hours before Yugi felt his sense of being return. His throat was still horribly dry and scratchy, eyes bloodshot and puffy. His body was cramped, and each movement caused his joints to pop a little. Was this what his Grandpa always felt like?

Using his door as leverage, the small boy rose back to his feet and flipped the lock open. Pulling the door open a crack, Yugi peeked his head out, watching as he caught the surprised look of his Grandfather staring back at him a few paces away.

“Yugi?” he questioned softly, grasping the door and pulling it open to reveal his trembling grandson. He’d heard the yelling of the Kaiba boy and of Yugi. He wasn’t able to make out the words, but it had been enough to overhear such sound, to have been trying for hours now to open his grandson’s door, and to see him looking so broken and desperate.

Small, warm arms wrapped themselves around Yugi, and both men found themselves making a passage down to the living room. Everything seemed like a blur after that. At some point his Grandpa had wrapped a blanket around him, given him something warm to drink, and deposited a small, golden box in his hands before shuffling the boy back to his room.

The next morning had been a bit of a blur as well. Yugi faintly remembered his Grandpa coming in several times, trying to wake him up, before just telling the boy to go back to sleep. By the time he’d gathered the strength to venture down stairs, he Grandpa could only giving him a small laugh at the state of his hair, before informing him that he’d called the school to let them know he would be skipping; but he better call his friends. Joey sounded furious in the voice mail he’d left.

Joey had been easier to deal with though when it was Yugi directly talking to him. All his friends knew that Mokuba came and visited throughout the week, and Joey had seemed to catch on that Yugi’s absence may have been related to the elder Kaiba brother. Yugi’s throat, still pretty dry and scratchy, saved him though. For the first time ever he decided on just giving his blond friend a lie. He told him he was sick, his throat was bugging him and he felt light headed. He’d do his best to be back by tomorrow, and Joey had taken the bait.

By the end of the call, Yugi had gotten himself dressed; his hair spiked, and was scampering out the door with a small golden box in hand.

He needed to think, and there was no better place than his hideout at the Domino Park. The weather was beautiful, inviting with just a slight breeze to calm the nerves, and the walk alone had already been far more uplifting than the young duelist could have hoped for. The park itself was filled with guests, some who stared in recognition, and others who seemed to pay him no mind. He let a smile rest on his face, walking his way back to a farther off area, a bench hidden by the brush of trees and flowers, caved in by shade and almost void of any sound that wasn’t supplied by nature.

Quietly, Yugi had taken his seat on the bench, placing the golden box beside him, and letting a smile stay plastered to his lips. “It’s funny, when I’m in this little spot, away from all the troubles and hassles of life, it feels like everything is gonna be okay. That even though my own world seems to be caving in, that maybe it’s only a small part. Maybe fixing this isn’t as hard as it sounds. At least, I think that’s you might of said, Yami.”

For a while things had been calm, and Yugi felt as though he could take a small nap. Just as his eyes had begun to close, the snap of a twig to his left caught his attention. Violet eyes darted over, growing wide as the sight of an equally surprised CEO that stood beside him.

The man looked borderline pissed, dumfounded and ready to turn tail and pretend like he’d never caught sight of Yugi in the first place. He couldn’t let that happen, not after how he’d turned tail yesterday.

“Kaiba?” He questioned, looking the man up and down before releasing a small sigh. “I guess this makes it easier now to apologize for yesterday….though I really didn’t expect to see you so soon…Maybe its fate?”

Fate? Really? Saying that was like asking for the CEO to slug him.

Finally Saturday. It had been a rather hectic week and Yugi couldn't be more relieved that they had a long weekend right ahead. Three entire days to rest and relax, although the weather didn't seem to want anyone to enjoy the evening outside… it was really cloudy and it surely would start to rain in any moment. That mere thought made Yugi's pace become quicker, subconsciously wishing to get home before it rained. This time his friends hadn't been able to walk him home from school, since everyone was busy with either a part-time job or just too tired and went straight home just like himself. It was only him and Yami. His violet eyes glanced down at the puzzle hanging from his neck, he hadn't talked to Yami for a few hours, but he knew of course that the spirit was there, and sometimes they were just fine in their comfortable silence. He smiled absently and continued walking, reaching the game shop a few minutes later. "Yugi, welcome home" he was greeted by Solomon Muto. "Grandpa, you're back!" He said with a smile as he took his shoes off "How was your trip?" Yugi moved to lean against the counter with genuine interest. The older man chuckled and didn't hesitate to tell his grandson about the excavation. Yugi listened attentively, his violet eyes shining with curiosity and excitement. "Other me, did you hear? Grandpa went back to Egypt and participated on an excavation on a temple near the tomb where he found the Millennium Puzzle!" he spoke through their mind link. Outside, the sky darkened as even more thick gray clouds gathered, and the sound of thunder suddenly distracted the tricolor-haired youth from his thoughts.
