Saw a video today that looked like more clickbait about the supposed downfall of Critical Role, and I thought it was going to be like, “and in conclusion, that major character death was planned, actually, as a publicity stunt because Bells Hells aren’t as popular as Mighty Nein and Vox Machina were.”
BUT it was actually, “hey, so you can’t measure their current Twitch stream views against the numbers they made before they split the stream between Twitch and YouTube, nor can you measure it against their views during Covid, because duh, Covid. Plus with it being pre recorded, there’s less of a reason to catch the livestream, when you can just wait and watch the VOD. They’re fine, don’t listen to clickbait weirdos.”
I was pleasantly surprised.

I don't even stream or post much on youtube and I know their anti-adblock campaign is bad because their algorithm will give thirty unskipable werewolf inflation footfetish reader app ads to like one person who'll feel judged because they don't quite get how algorithms work and will report it as adult content and demonitize dozens of channels.
And it's not even that adult content is bad, or even someone's specific adult preferences.
Because we all know youtube doesn't care about actual adult content. As long as it's in the ads they make money off.
It's literally the law of money for me and not for thee.
So fuck youtubes ads, I can probably give most creators more by buying one piece of the cheapest merch they sell then any amount of ads I might watch.

I love (/s) that when creators like CoryxKenshin, Markiplier***, Jacksepticeye, and many, many more called out YouTube's age restriction bullshit months ago, instead of YouTube actually fixing the problem with their shitty content moderation system, they doubled-down on it.
They doubled-down so hard on it that they literally removed Markiplier's segment from a creator spotlight video after they heavily advertised him being in it.
And when creators like RTGame tried asking for help from YouTube because his Best of 2022 video became restricted overnight, with no notice on policy changes, or anything like that - YouTube went back and restricted even more of his content, and told him that he couldn't get the restrictions lifted because he already asked for an appeal before. All because he swore in his videos (which had been acceptable before) and played a horror game.
When these videos become age restricted, that means that the content creator gets limited (to no) ad revenue on them, and they aren't recommended as heavily since their audience is limited to ages 18+ now.
Internally, Google has been faced with layoffs for months now, and it seems that one of their upper management "solutions" is to take it out on their creators by paying them less.
Anyway, I think ProZD's video sums it up best:
youtube
***note: YouTube shadowbanned Markiplier's full "Try Not to Get AGE-RESTRICTED Challenge" video so hard that you can't even find it through a "normal" YouTube search (and even some folks on r/Markiplier noticed that it couldn't be found as well). I had to do a regular Google search to locate it so I could link it to this post.
And this video is not currently age restricted anyway, and with millions of views, there's no reason why it shouldn't be appearing in search results normally.

lil upset with youtube right now. I tried trimming off the only 2 mins of copyright from my added beats Crazy Taxi 2 stream via youtube’s editor and the whole audio got mangled and is now desynced. the Godzilla Generations play had some trailers and music that I tried trimming off to get Toho to unblock it but each time it processes (which takes a day or two) it’s still all there. also I did a Sega Model 2 mega stream early August that is taking this long to remove the music tracks from Sega Touring Car Championship and about to just give up on that. no lesson to be learned here other than don’t even play games with copyright music / super compressed movie footage anymore... but youtube needs to get their shit together to allow us to remove stuff without it ruining the entire video and leaving it in a unwatchable state (or in the case of zilla not even visible). I don’t even make that much from my youtube so far just it’s annoying that YT can’t find a way to share the ad revenue between the copyright claim owners and the uploader but instead just gives it to the label owner 100% no matter the length. anyways thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

so youtube is putting shorts at the top of the sidebar now and you can't get rid of them. fortunately it only seems to be for music videos for now but honestly this is a sign that shorts is going to completely permeate throughout youtube as a whole.

man it's become so annoying to listen to music on youtube
I do it because there are tons of music that can only be found there (notably, OSTs that haven't been officially released are often there because people find their ways), and because all my personal playlists are there from the time when it wasn't a pain in the ass.
But recently they've been egregious. You know at some point having something playing in the background it stops and asks you confirmation to resume ? Today it did it the SECOND I clicked off the youtube tab. TWICE. Sometimes it just. stops working for no reason. I thought it was my adblocker causing trouble, but that never happens when I'm actually watching a video and keeping it on my screen. (It still works if I use the embed to somewhere on my screen while doing something else function in my browser) When I say stops working, i mean either endless loading time or just it stops and won't resume unless I refresh the page (and sometimes it just never wants to work again on that video and I need to go to another one)
It definitely is a pattern of "do I have it on my screen or not ?" If the answer is no, I expect to have it work awfully, especially if I'm on a playlist (the playlist feature with multiple videos in it, not playlists as in a long video with tons of songs inside), but that's probably because it gets more chances at being annoying when it's loading a new video every 3 minutes.

Hey so remember how grocery prices suddenly jackknifed during lockdown and never went back down?
Well turns out the companies would have done that shit either way and had been steadily price-fixing for the last decade!
Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson just announced more than $40 million in court-ordained Fuck You money from massive swaths of food production companies are to be paid out to households earning at or below 175% of the federal poverty level ($25.5k for 1 person, $34.5k for 2 people households) before Dec 31st of this year. Happy Holidays.
youtube
"The bottom line here is that my legal team took on two large corporate price-fixing conspiracies that increased the cost for groceries for Washington families. We've prevailed, and as a result, we are sending checks to over 400,000 Washington households."
Cannot stress enough the extent of the conspiracies he's talking about here. 15 out of the total 19 chicken producers got nailed in this lawsuit. Not the total number of conspirators, mind, just the ones who left enough evidence for the AG to kick their ass in so expedient a manner. Make no mistake, all 19 were in on it. The court case against the rest of them has been delayed until October of next year, though. None of them are making it out unscathed.
Tuna didn't escape antitrust horseshit either, because the CEOs of Starkist, Chicken of the Sea, and Bumblebee Tuna had a fucking group chat where they complained that the price of tuna was "too low" and they agreed to artificially inflate the price.
“What’s so maddening about the conduct of these companies is the reason that they engaged in this price-fixing conspiracy was greed. They wanted to make money."
Tumblr media
So anyway the AG who nailed their asses to the wall and continues to do so is running for governor. If you live in Washington, could be worth your vote when primary season rolls around.

One thing youtube hasn't considered is that i don't need an account with them.
Let me explain.
I have firefox and ublocker on my home puter. But my work puter has chrome (i know, sorry). And I think youtube 'blocked' me out of my work puter youtube account when it just started the no adblock, 3 strikes and you're out bullshit. I didn't notice and didn't care.
So now I'm logged out. And it has nothing to threaten me with. It can't block my account because I'm not logged into an account, but still have my adblock. So now when I need some music for a tedious monkey task, I just type in the name of the song or the artist or the compilation and it plays with no ads and I just imagine youtube seething over there.
What are you going to do, corporate boy? Block my IP? We both know you haven't grown those balls (yet).
And yes, if I need background music I just search for like Vivaldi Sacred Vocal works and I'm good. Or Eartha Kitt's albums. Like, I know what I want to listen to or which youtuber I want to watch on my lunch break. So I can type that into search bar without having access to my account. Even on my home account I barely use the subscription feature, I just look up the stuff when I want it.
I was never big into custom playlists, if I felt like listening to some vibes I would meticulously look them up song by song. So even without downloading firefox which overlords might disapprove of AND having an account blocked I'm still not watching their ads and living my best life.

I'm so mad about the new YouTube bullshit
As a vocal synth creator, I need to be able to link things!!! I need to be able to:
* Post the link to the original video, if I used someone else's file for my cover
* Post the link to the download for any files I'm sharing
* Post things like Bandcamp links if I'm posting original music
I've been uploading content to this channel for eight years. Just lost my "advanced features" today. YouTube gives a list of things that could take away those features, but I've done none of it. There's no reason to take them away from me, but YouTube also doesn't have any way to say 'hey, this was changed in error'!!!
I went and looked at my videos where I've shared links and it looks like they've just been converted to plain text. However, they're also not available as full text, meaning you can't even copy and paste them. Which means I now have to sit down and fix all my links so they're at least copyable.
Fuck Google. This is bullshit. I hope we get a better alternative soon.

People keep saying Star Wars is now a dead series.
Yeah it’s now SO dead that it’s got several TV shows (and more in the works) AND a major video game releasing next month.
Fuck off with that shit!
Taking lessons in nitpicking from balding, fat, predictable, unqualified, terminally online, middle aged, nitpicking Scottish (they’re usually British anyway, but not always) idiots on YouTube what have replaced their entire personality with whining, cynicism, bigotry and drunkenness under the pretense of so-called wit. (You know the ones!)
You know. Like every other pathologically obsessed angry review channel ever made EVER.
(No I’m not counting cinemassacre because AVGN has been around for a while and James Rolfe is actually smart, plus he does loads of other stuff too)
That shit got old in 2015.
Kindly fucking STOP it and move on!
Starting yesterday!
You are not a critic!
Critics usually know what they’re talking about most of the time.
These fuckers (i.e. nostalgia blinded twats!) don’t.
Do better.
Be better.
Move on.
Fucks sake.
