35 years ago today, Skid Row released their debut self-titled album.
I was working the midnight shift at a Husky truck stop/restaurant when their bus pulled in, around 3 in the morning. Bunch of 20-somethings (Sebastian Bach was 21), sleep-deprived and rowdy from the long bus ride. They were a handful. Making pyramids with the small creamers and throwing sugar packets at each other. But they were very polite and apologetic about the mess when they left. The old guy in charge (their manager?) left a nice tip and apologized profusely. They opened for Bon Jovi's 'New Jersey' tour and blew them off the stage. (Saw them at the now-gone Winnipeg Arena.) My god, the voice on that 21-year old.

Intro/Alone Again by Asking Alexandria is the same riff as Youth Gone Wild by Skid Row. Let that sink in.

Before Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit", there was Skid Row's "Youth Gone Wild" (teenage youth anthems)
Before Pearl Jam's "Jeremy", there was Skid Row's "18 and Life" (songs that tell real life stories about troubled teenagers related to guns)
Before Soundgarden's "Jesus Christ Pose", there was Skid Row's "Slave to the Grind" (there are parts of "Jesus Christ Pose" that sound like the guitar riff to "Slave To the Grind")
Before Stone Temple Pilots' "Sex Type Thing", there was Skid Row's "Piece of Me" (the songs sound alike at times)

.·:*¨ ✘♚✘ ¨*:·. It was a dull Friday night. Susan and Neil had gone out to some lame party parents throw for each other to pretend they're still young and hip. Max was at a sleepover with some friends, which left Mason and Billy alone in the house. It had been four years since his dad re-married --- and only five since his mother left. The replacement family that the teen had been stuck with, given no say in the matter, wasn't one he wanted. Lori had been the only one to ever really love him, and she abandoned him. Left him with a monster who's wrath only doubled. It definitely left Billy with a messed up sense of self-worth. Ever since he was saddled with the Mayfields, he'd become even moodier and more rebellious. He didn't hate his new step siblings --- on the contrary, he knew that they were in the same boat as him. But he sure as hell wasn't going to make life easy or pleasant for Neil.
Having the house without any parentals, Billy immediately broke into the liquor cabinet and hit the tequila. As he turned up his stereo to the sounds of Warrant, he wasn't out of control, but blissfully buzzed. Opening his bedroom door, the music could be heard all over the house. He ventured into the living room where he saw his stepbrother sitting on the couch. With a smirk, Billy came up behind him and flicked his earlobe. Then he jumped over the back of the couch to plop down beside Mason. "What's up, Spazoid?"

Perhaps they ought not to have eaten the dragon. There had been people objecting to it at the time. Surely such meat was poisonous. Perhaps it was even an affront, an insult to some intangible order of nature they ought to honour.
But the city was starving, the siege had gone on too long, and the king's troops were still a week's march away. The scorched earth would be fertile again in time, but right now it was barren. Right now there were mouths to feed. So they changed their crossbows for butcher knives and got to work.
None of the royal commanders asked any questions that could not be answered. After all, their aid had come shamefully late. The dragon's horned skull made a noble gift, a fitting tribute from a triumphant city to its humbled king. Who would have thought to question them?
And none of the townsfolk spoke up, when the first golden-eyed babes were born. Children who grew up barefoot and fearless, clambering over the city's patched and rebuilt roofs like they had no notion of falling, with a strange glitter to their skin when the sunlight hit it just so. No one breathed a word about dragons.
Because soon enough there were deft, young hands taking loaves straight out of the oven, heedlessly lifting iron from the forge, plunging into boiling laundry water. And some of them more wondrous still, wild, warm-skinned youths, with inexplicable knowledge and peculiar remedies.
A blessing, their families said proudly. A blessing after so much hardship. Which it was, in its way. This city would never fear dragon fire again.
