Your animal anatomy foundation 100% feels very solid, do you have any books or online sources to recommend to budding artists?

im gonna be honest... i never really specifically sat down to study drawing animals, or followed any art-oriented books or guides about that or anything. tutorials tend to not be very helpful to me because they rarely deal with gesture and focus more on getting the proportions right, which by itself is only a small part of it. and live drawing classes rarely involve animals...

i think it helps to have an existing, like, sense and confidence when it comes to observation and capturing volume and gesture in general. at the end of the day pretty much everything can be broken down into basic shapes, planes, blobs. actually A Blob is a good starting point to draw pretty much any animal... draw a blob and then put a head and limbs and appendages on it. yknow?

another thing is to just be curious and have an interest in the diversity and minutiae of the animal kingdom. i know it sounds very basic but I Love Animals. there are some real crazy creatures out there. obviously i recommend looking up as many reference pics as you can, not necessarily to copy stuff, but to have a handy guide of where stuff goes. but just looking at pictures honestly isnt quite enough in my opinion... read up on the animal. get a sense of what makes this particular species unique among ones similar to it, how it lives and functions in its habitat... watch a nature docco. watch some footage of weird little shrimp. learn how to tell different species of aeshnidae apart.

also, yeah, youre gonna have to look at and draw some animal skeletons at some point. i dont think you have to like, study the skeleton of every vertebrate you wanna draw, but yknow, its good to have a general knowledge. it really does teach you a lot to draw a horse skeleton and the individual parts in it. ideally of course you would be sitting in front of either the real thing or a 3d model, but sometimes photos and illustrations have to suffice... it's just important that you pay attention to what you're doing.

as for books... well, a relevant point here is that photos arent everything. obviously theyll give you a faithful picture of the living breathing animal, but thats the thing, they wont always let you see the exact shape, all the distinctive details, and so on. so this is where i recommend getting into some old timey illustrated books. yeah youre gonna have to do some treasure hunting... but listen. ive got this awesome book from 1979 for example, which lists pretty much every species of bird that lives in my little corner of the world, along with amazing detailed illustrations. it's so inspiring and informative. it is the kind of stuff i really wanna urge everyone to get into.

i mentioned to @thatoneandlonelyemo2005 (howdy fellow history nerd) that tattoos were really popular in the 1890s, as they were mostly used with indigenous peoples but they bled up to the royalty, and of course the rest of the world wanted to be just like them, and the electric tattoo gun was invented in 1891 so it wouldve made the process a lot less painful and we were like omg the newsies wouldve had tattoos!!!

so then we started comin up with hcs for what tattoos they would each get.

“You should never make a promise you can’t keep, Cole.”

These were the last few words you spoke to one another. Colby had been beyond preoccupied with his and Sam’s workload. And aside from the sparse phone calls you both had while he was out traveling the country, communication was difficult to come by. He hardly ever reached out despite posting luxuriously on his socials, and neither of you could keep up with your schedules enough to miss one another.

Things turned sour far too soon into the relationship, and you two reached a heartbreaking epiphany; this wasn’t working and neither of you were content with each other’s presence. So, you bid him one last goodbye and safe travels, and left— something the both of you knew meant far more than it should’ve. You two were finished for good.

That night, after arriving to your crowded muck of a studio apartment, you thought of everything and anything you could’ve done to salvage your heart and mind. In the end, you reached an endless road and hit it head on.

You crashed and fumbled to regain yourself. And at some point, crying yourself to sleep was becoming a chore.

Three days after Colby announced the news of your breakup socially, you received a phone call. You dreaded having to explain yourself to yet another unsuspecting individual.

“Hello?”

“Y/N, it’s Nate. Do you want to have a drink?”

The silence beyond the line echoes into nothingness as you stare at the crowd of half-drunk beer and whiskey bottles spilling over your coffee table.

Nate is quick to correct himself,

“Actually.. how’s pizza sound? I can order some wings on the side. The good ones, yknow! The ones you liked last time?”

“Awful, I know.” You tut and offer assistance in lugging the bagfuls of snacks and drinks to the barest space in your mainly-stuffy living room.

“Ignore the mess.” You drawl sarcastically and Nate chuckles under his breath, bridging over cans and bottles to make it to any spot on your couch free of snot-cluttered tissues.

“Yeah I can’t say that’s possible, but what I can do though—“ Nate melts into the cushions with a groan as he unwraps a thank you bag and offers you your first full meal in what.. a week and a half(?)

“—Is feed you. Eat up, buttercup.” He smiles, forking into his own to-go box. You stare owlishly at his attire, finally having a moment to delve into any and all dilemmas aside from your own.

The clothes he’s clad in are splattered in paint, all aimlessly strewn. He’s taking his next bite into his meal when he feels your eyes boring into him. He pauses, gesturing for you to eat and you do. Still, your eyes never leave him.

“What’s the matter?” He ultimately says, breaking the sounds of the two of you eating. You shift further into your cushions, a pained grin finding it’s way to your lips.

“I’ve just ruined everything I had with one of your good friends and you’re asking me that? Nate, I’m heartbroken and wallowing in my own depression.” You blurt.

You hadn’t realized your eyes had shut until there’s a weight being placed into your shoulders. He’s wrapping you in his jacket and pulling you into his chest, seared just inches next to you.

You allow yourself to settle deeper into his embrace, making way for him to wrap his arms around your form.

“Look, I’ve made friends and lost some over the span of my twenty plus years of life. It’s unfortunate, yes, and I can’t say it’s the same as losing a partner, but I can at least sympathize with you in the sense that we both lost something in the end.”

Nate repositions your head underneath his chin, carefully rubbing at your back in mindless little shapes and movements. “It doesn’t make us any weaker; losing people. If anything, it makes us stronger. You’ll find new people and learn from them each step of the way. Regardless of how it ends up going.”

“You know, I thought..” he murmurs, voice rumbling from his chest against your ear. You take in his scent; fresh paint and pine. Home. He smells like home. “I thought I had lost you for good years ago. Back when Colby made you his.”

“Nate, what?” You pull away, frowning. His arms fall from you and instinctively wrap around himself. He shrugs, eyes focusing elsewhere. “You would never lose me, not that easy.” You joke.

He chuckles and nods. “I know. But I thought you would’ve given me the boot once you had a guy like him in your life.”

“And why’s that?” You speak, slow and cautious as if afraid of asking the wrong questions. He peers over his own lashes to look at you.

“Because I loved you in a way I shouldn’t have. Not as a friend. As a lover. I wanted you the way he had you.”

Your hands twitch from where they sit on your lap, fingers worming into a locked position as you wrap your mind around what you’d just heard. Was this a dream? Did you deserve to know this?

“I’m sorry, this is inappropriate for me to be saying so soon after—“

“Why did you let me go?” You interrupt him. He stops, mouth agape before proceeding with a breathy sigh.

“if I had you in the way I had wanted for so long, I would’ve never have been able to let you go again.”

“Then why didn’t you? Why didn’t you keep me?”

“Keep you?” He blanches, confused.

You nod. “You had me, back then. I was yours. You just never said it or asked for it. I would’ve.. I would’ve stayed yours.”

He’s wrapping you in arms once more, except this time, he’s holding you in a way you know all too well; he’s afraid. Afraid of losing you, just like you were only weeks ago in his friend’s arms. Begging for this to be a dream.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you from this heartbreak.” He mutters.

“If I let you fix my heart.. not now, but soon, will you keep it safe?” You ask, and before you have the opportunity to retract anything you said, he’s moving to peck your cheek. Gentle and loving. This is what it must feel like to really love someone.

It wasn’t a question, but a confirmation. You already knew the answer.

He’d love you in any way, shape or form that you allowed him to.

You didn’t have to ask for it because his love for you had never once dwindled past empty. His heart was full of you. From his to yours, he’d make sure your heart was ever full and cherished.

He was there for you.

Some Ideas: Rey & his Music Albums

Pre-note: these were generated by an ai (I honestly forget which sites, because I scrolled through a few of those free ones)

Also, this is for an OC and they're not really albums, as badly as I wish they were (I mean unless someone can make music really well lol)

I wanted to create a few "aesthetics" and random ideas to use as album covers for Reyzor C's music. I'm planning to probably either recreate these images as my own art (and I do mean literally, from-the-ground-up on FireAlpaca recreate) or splice them together with other things and do some heavy-ass personal tweaking to make it into. Well. What I want it to be.

I've actually gone so far in giving Rey's musical career life as to create three full lists of song titles for all of his albums, so all of these images are connected - either to the albums themselves or to the titles (and don't ask why some of them are what they are, man, just, lemme drown in my aesthetic juice okay?)

For his first album, "Artificial", I had a few cover ideas, but this one feels like the most fitting:

I do have a pic I could fit in with Breather though since it feels somewhat in line with it. Please ignore that this bird is missing half a leg. Or don't, maybe it's meant to.

Next is the album cover idea behind his second one, "Pedestal", which I won't lie to you I debated as being the cover for Artificial, but I like them this way just a teeny bit more. This image has a nice lighting and retro vibe to it. Like an 80's roller skating rink floor.

I actually tried to get some decent ai photos for Vending Machine, but unfortunately they never felt quite right - usually the ai put it in the middle of a walkway and it was just kinda awkward so, eh. This was the best I was able to do with it:

I thought that this one was really neat, and kinda trippy. It looks like it belong in a Melanie Martinez song (which like, not complaining here, but yknow). It'd probably fit best with Escapism.

I think Don't Kiss Me Goodbye, whether Rey wanted it to be or not, would be his swan song, that thing he's best known for. And this may not be the cleanest fit (actually it's one of the weakest) for an art cover with that song, but I think that catches the fact that this was an afterthought song Rey didn't think was gonna blow up.

Honestly not sure where this one would fit best, as it's more of an idea for the cover of Artificial that I just wanted to keep because I like the theme and the vibe it emits. Might go well with Trial, it feels kind of dangerous-y and on the edge.

Next up is the third and most recently constructed album titles, and that is "Gravesinger" - does it feel like Rey's songs have a line of evolution yet? Cuz I was going for that.

Corpse is probably one of those songs that's way lighter and more whimsical than the title lets on, so I want to pair it with this image of a knight and flowers to give that vibe of something quietly rotting away.

Then there's Memory Lane, which I wanted to put this cool ocean wave picture on, since it feels similar to that retro vibe from the previous two albums (I think I used the same bot base "style" iirc)

Being the last song in his last (presumable) album, Seafoam is likely a song of Rey's response to the resounding success that was Don't Kiss Me Goodbye and his own mixed emotions surrounding it. As such, their covers are similar.

Aaaaand that's all I managed to get in, but I might go back and make more of these to slap on the song titles. Hell, maybe I'll even make the lyrics for them one day. Or figure out how to make music on the computer, idk. That's probably kind of a stretch given I know jack shit of music. Oh well.

And we know this was Pete because Hester had no idea about the plan to kill Gigi, and even if that wasn't enough, Boone specifically mentions and explains Gigi wearing the wrong costume in the Mommie Dearest attack, and he wouldn't have needed to do that because Hester had been there to see it.

-- Boone was on campus a year early. Pete had been there for a year already before canon's episodes. Boone was friends with Chad still we can assume, and Pete was both with and later obsessing over Chanel. We find out at Boone's will-reading that Chad knew about this. Boone absolutely would have known about all this, and just knew that Pete would listen if he pulled the right strings.

-- Pete attacks Zayday in SMIH. This was both likely because Grace was arguing with Wes at the time, so with Zayday gone too, she'd have nobody but him to turn to, but this was also right after Zayday escaped Boone kidnapping (indirectly protecting) her. It would not be out of character for Pete to want Zayday dead for- in his eyes- taking Boone away too.

-- The entire will-reading scene honestly leans more toward saying yes, they were lovers, instead of no, Chad's just silly.

-- Boone trusted Pete with his life. He completely honestly believed that he could trust and confide in Pete more than he could Hester, especially when it came to his troubles with Gigi. He asked him to do this with him in the first place, let alone making Pete the one to hold the knife???

-I feel like I’m forgetting smth that prompted me to write this. Oh well. 

-I think the reason my black eye was bigger than the other is because it had a “ring” around it, making it so that it appeared bigger but it didn’t affect vision. The ring works like a camera’s lens ring thingy, but more so used for... Analysis, I think? (I’m going off the concept art from source, it may differ for me honestly)

-Also yknow those pics of really tiny cats?? Those are just... Very me energy.

-I was around the size of an average cat, maybe? I came to around knee height of a human. I was probably deceptively heavy because of all of the metal I was made of.

Hell yeah alright so for this one I’ll talk abt my beloved bestie oc Tony

His full name is Daytona Phoenix and I did come up with him when I was 11 and insane and he has somehow managed to live in my brain for over a decade. Because I came up with him when I was 11 he has retained some of the original features 11 year old me gave him which is the fact that he is a shapeshifter who is actually a Phoenix by birth but can shapeshift into a human. It’s important to note the bird came first. Thus he is effectively immortal and can regenerate from the ashes (somewhat doctor who style) should his body be destroyed. He is around 800 years old but perpetually looks around 24 lmao. Another original facet of his personality is that he is the lead singer of a cover band and also plays keyboard and/or drums should the need arise. He’s also somewhat of an inventor so he likes to tinker with machinery. He enjoys sushi as well as other Japanese cuisine.

Since he’s basically grown up with me he’s also obviously evolved since I made him so he is also very much bisexual. He’s also a cheeky little bastard but that just makes him funny. I love him dearly.

I’ll add an array of pics of him so this here first is just a picrew with his general vibes it isn’t exactly how I see his face but like. Vibes are there. Basically the general thesis of his appearance is that he has red red hair (not just ginger- red red), red eyes to match his hair, he’s somewhat svelte with toned muscle and no body hair. When he’s a bird he looks like. Yknow the fuckin uh. The Phoenix boss fight in sonic unleashed? He looks like that but all orange and on a much smaller scale closer to the size of an osprey. He can grow some facial hair but just not very thick.

And then next we have I made him in fallout 4 which is probably the closest to how accurate I think he looks (even tho ik a lot of his face is covered lmao- I thot the sunglasses were funny. They are.)

And then in DAI I designed my first inquisitor to be how Tony would design himself in a video game which means with a full beard looking absolutely fly as hell. I know this man could never have hair and a beard styled that well.

I should make him in cyberpunk next tbh. Tony quite literally lives in my head rent free and he is never moving out. I’ve had him for so long he’s literally like a close friend to me. He’s been with me through it all. Maybe someday I’ll actually write him into something lmao.

so like this semester im taking oil painting to get more optional class credits which i was mostly coerced into taking bc friends also wanted to take the class and its mostly just hanging out painting for 3 hours a week, (it was either this or watercolor and like fuck im taking watercolor they do NOTHING in that class and least the oils teacher actually like, does stuff sometimes anyway if i run out of cool optatives next semester i may cave in and take the class but no sooner!!) ANYWAY so im in oils right and im like zoning out doing random brushtrokes on this canvas full of halfpainted birds im copying from a picture the teacher made us choose bc its the first assignment yknow and im alone bc my friends decided to take a break outside the classroom bc the paint thiner is too much or whatever anyway midway thru going over the backgroud of my picture bc i cant get the colors properly on ther i feel like this really intense feeling that someone is staring and like this is a painting class everyone always does like walks around looking what everyone else is doing n u can sense that someone is staring but this one was reaaallly intense n i get over ignoring and i see this guy and theyre like very intensely staring at my canvas u would think it personally offended them right and i go like hey :D bc im nothing if not socially inept. anyway turns out they wanted to ask me to help them out in this photography assignment bc its for tomorrow (today) and they needed a model to shoot and im like aw man sure i can help no worries and they were all like im so sorry im so fucking sorry i have to ask u this is so embarassing for me im sorry u can say no i dont wanna offend u its ok and im like ok its fine!! no big!! what can i do for ya boss and they say the promt for the picture was "little girl" and they where so awkward and embarassed to ask i could not be mad that they saw me and thought i was perfect for it BUT it makes me feel better that the trans kid was trying so hard not to offend me by calling me little girl like at this point im not sure if they thought i would be offended by the little or the girl part but im taking whatever gender affirming thoughts i can get from that ( i am very small but not a girl but i have eyes i know what i look like) doesnt help that the one day i decided to go in a skirt is the day that happens but oh well!!! im nothing if not helpful to my fellow student in a hurry to get homework done i get it photography classes are awful, especially ones that require u to shoot models so whatever i help them out they get a (hopefully) cool pic for class and after the whole ordeal they helped me out with my painting and gave me tips after subtly nagging at me about the state of my paintbrushes (i dont wanna talk about it) so all is well. also i think i just got manic pixied dream they'd bc i always wanted to talk to them bc theyre so coooool i took a theatre class w them once so i hope im not to uncool for them omygosh i wanna be friends w them so bad i feel 14 over again anyway at the end i got to say bye and also made two other friends in oils class so actually im glad i took the class

Cursed bird fact ducks aren’t the only birds with penises - swans, geese, ostriches, and emus do too! (absolutely don’t Google ostrich penis)

I like how you just put "are the only birds with penises" but I did know all of those except ostriches and emus (but what about the other raptor bird, the true terror, the cassowary?🤔) Birds are like kinda absolute demons and assholes when it comes to sex 😬

And yeah I always got more pet pics, this time you get our current pups, Ruby(who has the red collar) and Sapphire (who has the blue collar)! Rubes is a lil bit moody but very lovable to her family and she is literally just solid muscle. An absolute brick house.

Sappy is an absolute goofball who has so much energy. Like you could run this dog for four hours straight and she'd still be ready to go. If I hadn't known their parents I'd be convinced somehow she had husky in her😅

Why TF don't we have that guy be an ostrich? Like. Those fuckers are the definition of big bird. They don't fly, which I know for a fact from my experience with osmp fics that authors love to use to angst him. But man do those fuckers run.
