“Baby on Board,” he clarifies, swallowing his mouthful of chicken and risotto, speaking with his mouth full like the caveman he is, and Jake is regrettably charmed. “Not the show, the whole… ‘I’m Jake Seresin, and you’re watching Disney Channel’ thing.” He does a perfect imitation of Jake’s bumper, his inflection flawless, and Jake groans.

“Why did you watch that?

Rooster shrugs. “I thought it was cute. The floppy 2000’s hair, the long sleeve t-shirt under the short sleeve t-shirt under the vest, the tie for some reason, the bedazzled jeans…”

“Okay, they weren’t bedazzled, they were embellished. And it was trendy at the time.”

KOTW (pictured) is not what I’d consider underrated, but underrated books I have made bookmarks for include The Falconer series by Elizabeth May, Poison Study by Maria V Snyder, and None Shall Sleep by Ellie Marney.

He sits across the ice from the little dragon. Chase shivers uncontrollably and makes a pitiful, sad chittering, his muzzle laid dejectedly across his front claws.

“Nice try,” he says. “Not falling for it.”

The dragon huffs and sits up. He’s still shivering, but it’s less dramatic now. He’s reminded of Chase anytime Dashi’s caught him attempting to prank him. He can almost hear him insist that no, he wasn’t trying to trick him into drinking pond slime. He was a proud, serious warrior with no time for that sort of nonsense.

The dragon lowers his head and Dashi snaps a muzzle of ice around his snout before he can start gnawing at his restraints. Chase’s eyes flash in anger.

“Yeah sure,” he says, with a dismissive wave. “You’re going to kill me. I get it.” As if he hasn’t already done it. As if Dashi doesn’t still sometimes wake up in a cold sweat, feeling jaws around his throat or the sting of betrayed mercy.

“What am I going to do with you?” he asks.

WIP Wednesday (5/3/23)

One minute ago, Arthur had realized that he’d been staring blankly at the same Middle English paragraph for several minutes. He’d given up on studying altogether and gathered up his reference books to shelve. When he’d stood, his rolling chair had skittered sideways out of his reach. He’d been ready to chalk it up to caffeine tremors and jittery nerves when he’d heard the lobby’s floor-to-ceiling windows rattle.

That was when he’d glanced up and discovered that the world was ending.

He blinked—once, twice—and craned his neck to get a better look. Well, his tired brain amended as it struggled to process the latest milestone in his terrible day, perhaps ‘ending’ is too strong a word. Maybe just the ‘start’ of the Apocalypse?

Semantics aside, the sky was raining fire.

I’ve spent the last two weekends selling books at the local fair. I like to think my presence brightens the table somewhat. (Somebody had to do the Disney showtunes.)

I am the author of Time Spent with a Cat is Never Wasted, a Holtzbert fanfiction. It was pretty popular in it's heyday, so I was thinking...

If I turned it into a more fleshed out, original romance story, would people be interested? Maybe for like...$5.00 tops? As a Kindle book?
