And here he turned to the King Under the Mountain. A once solemn and exiled king now standing with pride. The thrumming of his heart radiating even from beneath that breastplate. Bilbo held his hand there, just to feel it. Just to feel the pulse of the Dwarf-King’s reclaimed heart.
“And I think I’ll miss you most of all, Oakenshield.” Bilbo whispered.
Before he could think twice of it, Bilbo fetched the acorn from his pocket. It had been the only treasure he had claimed for himself on this journey. And even as much as he wanted to go home, a piece of him had wanted to stay here. Which was why he forced Thorin’s hand open and placed the acorn there.
“But this is your treasure.” Thorin argued. “Did you want something else?”
And he did. He wanted terribly. But instead, Bilbo shook his head. For the one thing he wanted was something he knew he could not have.
