I already fully understood why Pangzi was the way he was about Piaopiao, but after seeing these I understand on an even deeper level why he called her a goddess and couldn’t shut up or forget about her for his entire damn life oh my god...

Title: My Boyfriend's Boyfriends
Fandoms:  盗墓笔记 - 南派三叔 | The Grave Robbers’ Chronicles - Xu Lei, 盗墓笔记重启 | The Lost Tomb Reboot (TV)
Relationships: Wang Pangzi/Ye Piaopiao, Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling, Ye Piaopiao/Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling
Summary:
“I think it might be easier for him, and for all of us really, if we tried to spend more time together. If we show him that we can get along and be friends then maybe he won’t worry so much.”
If he’s surprised by her suggestion or her boldness in speaking so openly about their relationship then he doesn’t show it. Instead he smiles.
~
All Piaopiao wants is to make Pangzi happy, and if that means getting to know his two other boyfriends then that's what she'll do.
Tumblr media
She’s used to the antiques world of course, after being taught repair and restoration as a teen and then more recently with the work she did for Xue Wu and Pang-ge. She tries not to think about her time working for Xue Wu too much. That had been a low point in her life, fuelled by desperation to get the money she needed to pay for Xiao Mei’s treatment.
In the end, though, Pang-ge had been the one to come through for her as he always does and she’d quickly left that part of her life behind her. Xiao Mei is better now and, for the first time in a long while, they can start to think about the future again.
She likes the smell of the shop as they pass through it to get to the main part of the house. It smells dusty and old but there’s something comforting and familiar about it.
“Tianzhen!” Pang-ge calls as they head through the door to the house. “Stop trying to be the cool uncle and come and greet your other guest.”
She hears loud whispers, and the unmistakable sound of Xiao Mei laughing. It’s a sound she wasn’t sure she was ever going to hear again and she has to blink away her tears at the sound of it.
Wu Xie emerges from a back room a moment later, looking much the same as he did the last time they met.
Well, not exactly the same. He looks healthier now. His face is fuller and less gaunt, there’s colour to his cheeks that hadn’t been there before and there are no shadows under his eyes.
“Sister in law,” he greets with a bright smile which causes Pang-ge to make a choking sound behind her. “Welcome.”
“Tianzhen,” Pang-ge hisses. “I told you not to call her that.”
She can’t help but smile. The name isn’t exactly inaccurate even if Pang-ge is still in denial about the fact.
“Xiaoge is around here somewhere,” Wu Xie explains, ignoring Pang-ge and keeping his attention focused on her. “I’m sure he’ll show up when dinner is ready.”
“I should check the food,” Pang-ge says and he sounds anxious. “I’ve only been gone for thirty minutes but if you’re here and Xiaoge is somewhere that means neither of you has been keeping an eye on it.”
He dashes off in the direction of what is presumably the kitchen, leaving her alone with Wu Xie. If he feels awkward about being alone with her he doesn’t show it. There’s curiosity in his eyes and maybe he’s as invested in this meeting as she is.

DMBJ Rare Pair Exchange Reveals (1)
Discussed roughly in order of the writing.
“Three Meals With Mr Wu”
This was for the person I matched with, Hils, who wanted among other things: “Pangzi introduces Piaopiao to his other partner(s) and they figure out how to make it work”
And I… didn’t entirely put as much Pangzi in there as I’d intended, but I hope Hils had fun.
One of the things I like about the Daomu Biji novels, and many of the visual adaptations (a lot of the movies are pretty lean), is that they’re carrier-bag stories that persistently drag “ordinary” people, with their preoccupations and fears and loves, right through the adventure shenanigans and Cosmic, and the stories remind us that these preoccupations and fears and loves matter right alongside the protagonist’s worries. Piaopiao is one of those people. But also, her story in the back half of Reboot s1 parallels Wu Xie and Pangzi pretty strongly - she’s exploring the dangerous world of illegal antiquing even as Wu Xie explores Warehouse 11; she’s grappling with the oncoming death of a loved one even as Pangzi is. So… when I started writing her interacting with Wu Xie, I wanted to explore points of commonality.
The introduction to the Sand Sea novels is from the POV of a third-party writer who made friends with ‘Guan Gen the Photographer’ (Wu Xie’s alias) at a mixer, largely because they’d both experienced tragedies in their lives and could relate, which evolved into sending packets of cakes to each other for a while until he Disappears Mysteriously. It seemed a reasonable thing to borrow for Piaopiao, who has also had a life of trouble. There was also another prompt in the collection, about Wu Xie and Piaopiao meeting on an arranged date, all of which boiled into a scenario of Wu Xie Finds A Fake Girlfriend So His Parents Won’t Worry About His Loveless Existence.
It was definitely interesting how much Wu Xie put into appearances, during that first meeting, and how much Piaopiao wasn’t looking at his face but at the visual code of his clothing. And how polite and extremely frank they could be, and at her perception of the bleak wasteland one saw just as soon as one looked properly at his eyes.
I think my favourite scene was in Xue Wu’s house, as they eat together while Pangzi sleeps, and slip right back into Extremely Frank.
“[I meant tell me] something true about you.”
After a pause, Mr Wu says, “My grandfather named me Wu Xie.”
Piaopiao stares at him.
“I’m sorry,” he adds. “I’ve had a complicated life.”
And also, at the end of that scene. Because Piaopiao is friendly but not so close that his grief will cause her pain, Wu Xie just… stumbles into a bit of a breakdown. And she sits with him and offers a handkerchief and is just quietly there and won’t blab to Pangzi that Wu Xie might, god forbid, be a little bit sad about his impending death. Ai.
The I-Ching epigrams came quite late in the writing process. I described Yatou’s eyes as ‘deep as a lake under the mountains’ then wondered what that hexagram might mean. And it worked pretty well: Decrease, which is about gain and loss and the balance between people. And since I knew from the first that Piaopiao was still going to get into an accident, just not a lethal one… at some point Pangzi was going to have to choose which loved one he left to fend for themself. Who gets deprived? Can they balance things so that their increase does not decrease others? (Answer: yes, because Wushanju is a polycule, thank you for coming to my TED Talk.)
“Morning, Evening”
So this was written as a Treat and I was almost ready to post it when I realised I was impinging on a DNW but didn’t want to change that part of the plot so in the end I had no chill and posted it as a general fic and then it turned out the potential giftee, mekare, liked it anyway. So it all worked out in the end! Hmmm, I wonder if @merinnan would let me tuck it into the Collection?
Anyway. Giftee wanted Piaopiao retiring with the Iron Triangle to Rain Village, with domesticity and fluff, and possibly evolving their relationship to include a new person. In the end I went with some short scenes throughout the day, with the people in ones and twos, coming together near the end for dinner. Because people can do their own thing and still be part of a family, yeah?
So two things that come up in the Rain Village era of the novels is that a) Xiaoge often just knows when someone is about to die of old age or sickness and will sit with them, talk with them, work to honour their last wish etc. and b) Wu Xie has acquired a Special Interest in ecology, which naturally led into Xiaoge helping a v. old lady up a mountain to fly a brilliant red kite one more time before she goes, while Wu Xie replants a deforested slope with Xiao-Mei - while also speculating on when they can get fish from the stream they’re cleaning while also telling a funny story and meditating on the nature of Wanting Things, because if I ever write Wu Xie only thinking about One Thing at One Time, I will have lost touch with canon. And I dunno - it just seemed really important to have scenes that touched on the cycle of life and death.
(Xiao-Mei and Wu Xie are spending a lot of time together because her mum and Pangzi are doing that lovey-dovey honeymoon stuff right now and Xiao-Mei and Wu Xie are Not Monsters.)
I wanted something a little funny for Pangzi - but also that little shock when he realises he’s in his happy ending(!!!). And Piaopiao quietly getting used to the idea that other people have her back right now, while also living the glamorous life of a Notorious Woman(™). And, of course, Pangzi and Piaopiao slow-dancing to an old record while other people do the cooking scutwork seems like Relationship Goals to me. May they continue to slow dance for many years to come.

If you haven't yet, the piaopiao fic?
Thank you, @foxofninetales!  I was hoping someone would ask me about that one!  :D
[If anyone else would like to ask me about a WiP title, you can find the list here.]
SO.  The Piaopiao fic is one that I’m afraid I may not be funny enough to actually write, but I want to take a stab at it anyway.  First, because I love Piaopiao.  Second because I love Piaopiao with Pangzi.  Third, because they and Xiao Mei ALL deserved SO MUCH BETTER and I want them to have it.  And fourth, because I love outsider POV fic with my entire heart and this is going to tick some of the same boxes.  ^_~
So, as I was considering a fix-it fic for Piaopiao (even one of the handwavey post-canon fix-it variety), I started thinking about what that would be like for her to date Pangzi given how tightly knit the Iron Triangle are.  She’s kind of in a “this marriage is between me, my husband, and his two best friends/boyfriends/queerplatonic life partners/husbands/what exactly ARE you three to each other again??” situation, because she just... can’t... quite... figure it out?
So she starts writing in to an advice column or a Reddit thread or something.  And she’s describing these increasingly inexplicable situations she’s ending up in and people are alternately routing for her and telling her she’s nuts for trying to break up a marriage and she is SO extremely confused, but Pangzi is the one pursuing HER so she just tries to take that on good faith and get to know his two partners as best she can, and she’s a woman of the 90s, she’s open-minded, and as long as they’re all adults and it’s safe, sane, and consensual, then WHY NOT, COULD BE FUN TO HAVE A HAREM?
And in the end it falls out that they’re two couples who are just happily raising Xiao Mei together and taking care of each other, and OK, so her husband just came with two bonus other men and that’s just fine with her, because he’s a LOT when he decides he needs to fuss over someone and this way he can spread his fussing around a little.  ^_^
Bonus fun: Wu Xie, Xiao Hua, Ershu, Wang Meng, Xiao Mei, Xiazi, AND Xiaoge have all chimed in on this Reddit thread.  Pangzi is the only one who has no fucking clue.  XD  Double bonus: Xiaoge is the one who convinces her to go for it, in the end.  ;D

Bit late, but 16, 17, and 18 for Shipping Manifesto?💜
Never late 💚💚💚
16 - Ship you wish was less popular I answered this one here , and since I don't have any other ship to add, I'll keep with that.
17 - Ship you used to love Other than WinterBaron, then. Sangcheng (MDZS). I had a good time in the Fandom with this ship, if I didn't think too deeply about Nie Huaisang. If I ignore what I hate about him, I still enjoy art, but not really interested in reading their fics. Yet, I love Jiang Cheng with all my heart.
18 - NOTP Unpopular opinion: Iron Triangle (as ot3 or every combination of them, EXCEPT for Ultimate Note PingXie). Not even killing Piaopiao, I stopped shipping her with Pangzi - one of my 3 fav het ships. Not even IF Liu Sang was killed I'd stop shipping PingSang. And, ignoring possibilities outside DMBJ world, Wu Xie is ALWAYS too ace (often aroace) and if he has a romantic interest, is in artifacts, tombs and things he shouldn't touch, not in people. (This goes differently if we can add crossover jksjksskj)
Thanks for the ask! ;D

Monday Fic Recs
Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling (DMBJ)
... and your chicks for free by rainisfallingdown
Pangzi throws his hands up in surrender which startles the chicks on the floor and sends them peeping around Xiaoge’s boots again. He knows when to admit defeat. There’s a certain art to knowing Xiaoge as well as they do and one of the facets of that is knowing that you will never know everything. But the fact remains that if Xiaoge says something isn’t a zombie, it isn’t a zombie.
This is so cute and funny! Xiaoge is a Disney Princess for possibly supernatural chickens
Liu Sang/Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling (DMBJ)
Table for Four by fox_of_nine_tales
Four tomb-raiders walk into a bar restaurant. Their waiter is too gay for this.
I swear I nearly ruptured something the first time I watched this because I was laughing so hard
Gen (DMBJ)
The Soggiest Rescue by mountainrose
Rain village is named Very Accurately, and Wu Xie will be having Words with whoever is responsible for maintaining these drainage systems.
Some very excellent Liu Sang whump.
Wang Panzi/Wu Xie/Ye Piaopiao/Zhang Qiling
waves on the ceiling by ravenditefairylights
Piaopiao and Xiao Mei are both here—they must have arrived while Wu Xie was gone—and they’re obviously cooking, if the assortment of baking equipment on the kitchen table and their matching aprons are anything to go by. Piaopiao is taking different things out of the shelves and cupboards and putting them on the table, while Xiao Mei is very seriously instructing Xiaoge on how to peel and cut the purple sweet potatoes she has in front of her.
This is so sweet and soft my heart melted

DMBJ Rarepair 2022 Recs (1)
I’m going to keep this fairly short, and maybe do a follow up in a couple of days. Needless to say, there is some really excellent fic in the Collection, and you should totally go browse it.
“Of Roadtrips and Watermelons”
Hei Xiazi/Wang Meng
A flirty interlude during a roadtrip that takes place during one of the side stories. Watermelons! Comes with gorgeous art, and I really feel Wang Meng deserves a nice day every now and then.
“With Gritted Teeth”
Huo Daofu/Liu Sang
Hurt/comfort with, uh, overtones, regarding the patch-up after the Thunder City arc. There is some truly goddamn sensual descriptive language, and also body horror, so the whole fic is an experience. I liked it both for Huo Daofu’s complicated emotional life, Liu Sang’s somewhat desperate bravado, and the little cameos of other characters.
“shadows and mirrors”
A-Ning/Chastity Chen; Su Nan & Wu Xie
Somebody wrote a fic about Su Nan! And A-Ning! And Chastity Chen! FOR ME!! And boyyyy does Su Nan get a complicated emotional life. A little bit sharp, a lot sad, I love it very, very much.
“Three Meals With Mr Wu”
Wang Pangzi/Wu Xie/Ye Piaopiao
Both a Piaopiao Lives AU and a Piaopiao POV on Wu Xie. She’s delightfully cynical, poor lady, and it's interesting to see what kind of relationship she could build with Wu Xie.
“Somewhere far beneath your pointed tongue and teeth”
Yin Xinyue/Zhang Qishan; Yin Xinyue & Qi Tiezui
Glorious look at Yin Xinyue’s perspective of the first half of the Mystic Nine drama. I liked it ‘cause it was kind of… she’s not an angel, yeah? That’s a cosseted young miss suddenly in a new environment and for all her charms she’s also a bit mean sometines. And she’s still smart and dashing and brave when it counts. Bless. (Though I do hope she and Ba-ye make up properly.)

They loved each other so much.  They GAVE each other so much.  They supported each other and complemented each other in SO MANY WAYS, and I am forever destroyed that they didn’t get to keep each other and BE A FAMILY.

I don’t know if I mentioned, but I am trying out some Kink Bingo writing, to get back into practice of writing in general and smut in particular. And one of my boards is DMBJ.
So I’m like, Hmm, what pair could I do for this “booty call” prompt. I know! I’ll try some PangPiao!
And my frickin’ “Piaopiao can’t stop thinkin’ about that Pang-ye experience and invites him over~”, which was supposed to be an easy set up for a quick romp, is developing a whole-ass plot about communication and letting loved ones make their own choices and Xiao Mei being everyone including Wu Erbai’s favorite niece. And I’m 850 words in and there’s a call but no booty.
I also started this one with a deliberately easy set up because the Liang Wan/ Zhang Rishan faux A/B/O qilin blood-induced “mating season” gained all sorts of worldbuilding and an Iron Triangle sequel before I even finished the first draft. But no. My easy set up break from that is no longer easy.
This is why I never finish anything.
