Cobra Kai: Femslash Ao3 Statistics

Yeah. This took a while and the results were kind of depressing. But I have graphs!

Some necessary notes/disclaimers before we get started:

- I am only human and it is inevitable there may be small errors in the data that I missed. This is a very rudimentary exploration and very little math was involved. I am not a mathematician or statistician and this is just an exercise, not a peer reviewed study (obviously).

- This is not a callout post. No one is attacking you for your writing habits specifically. This is an analysis of trends first and foremost, not a criticism of individual behaviors. If you feel yourself getting defensive while reading this, please take a step back and consider why you might be reacting that way. Also, if you say something stupid on this post, I will just block you, obviously.

- You may be thinking, “Wow, all that seems a little presumptive, why would people say stupid things on this post?” And to that I say: God I wish that were me. Unfortunately, people in fandom have a habit of being weird about femslash.

Okay. Let’s get into the numbers!

*Note: This data was gathered 6/23/23.

Firstly, we have a basic breakdown of CK’s Ao3 categories laid out in bar graph form:

As to be expected, M/M takes the lead, accounting for just under 2/3rds of all CK fic on Ao3. Granted, M/M’s popularity is no surprise when you consider the fandom’s most popular ships and the characters and relationships that feature most prominently in the show.

Now, note that these are taken from the category numbers as listed by ao3’s filter system. The number listed for F/F is 360.

However— This does not reflect the actual number of CK fics containing F/F hosted on ao3. This is because a. many authors have mistagged their works and b. the ao3 filter system is flawed, and some fics end up where they shouldn’t (the ‘Multi’ tag definitely contributes to this).

Soooo I went through CK’s entire F/F tag and counted which fics were, in fact, actually F/F.

(If you’re wondering about criteria—Firstly: they had to have a Cobra Kai character in an F/F pairing. Crossover fics with two characters of an entirely different fandom in an F/F pairing weren’t counted. There had to be at least one CK character involved in the F/F in question. Secondly: Actual textual mention of F/F, even if it’s just one tiny sentence. Literally I’d take anything. I need you to know I was NOT harsh about this, truly I was looking for “does this have F/F in any way whatsoever and is it Cobra Kai”)

The number for actual F/F fics came out to 313.

(*Note: there are some areas in this data where standards become unavoidably subjective, so there’s a necessary margin of error. Plus, your preferred methods may be different! These are just mine).

Here’s a pie chart comparing the number of actual F/F fics (313) to the total number of non-F/F CK fics (which was found using the total number of CK fics on ao3, minus actual F/F).

As depicted, F/F content comes out to 5.7% of the total CK fics on Ao3. 5.7%. That… Sure is a number!

Remember how M/M is the most popular category? I wanted to see what the data looked like if we controlled for it. In its simplest form (like, aggressively simple, this would go differently if this were a formal study), this means removing all M/M fics from the data; and dear god, note that this is not because I don’t like M/M or something (lmao), it’s just because it gives us insight into how the popularity of M/M can affect the overall breakdown of the data in question.

That being said, here’s a bar graph with CK’s Ao3 categories, now adjusted with M/M controlled:

Honestly, I found it nice that Gen fic is so popular in this fandom? You don’t see that everywhere. That being said, it’s obvious that even when we’re disregarding the most popular category (M/M), F/F still lags wayyyyy behind Gen and M/F.

(If you’re interested in more percentages: controlling for M/M, F/F makes up 10.4% of all the non-M/M CK fics).

Now that we have our overall categories data out of the way, let’s look at the breakdown of F/F specifically. This is a bar graph featuring the 6 most popular F/F ships (“popular” meaning they have more than 10 fics. I know. It’s rough out here), plus the overall number of genderbent M/M or M/F.

It’s so funny to see SamTory winning this one because I can tell you, it sure doesn’t usually feel like they’re that popular of a pairing when you’re someone who writes for them. But, considering all their canon interactions, it’s understandable why they’re the most popular F/F pairing, even if F/F overall is still underrepresented.

Our last bit of data focuses on how often F/F pairings are used as background for other ships. This graph takes the previous breakdown of the 6 most popular F/F ships, and compares it to the number of fics each pairing has where the F/F pairing isn’t just in the background.

The criteria for that: the F/F ship is a. featured prominently, b. has an impact on the plot/story, and/or c. features scenes that focus particularly on the F/F ship interacting.

(Note: in effort not to bias the data against drabble compilations, those fics are counted as long as at least one of the drabbles focuses specifically on the F/F relationship in question).

Man. Some of these are just brutal. Even Sam/Tory is cut down by almost a quarter.

Ok, so, this is all very interesting. But; what do we do with this information?

Well; I think the biggest takeaway is just that F/F is still really, really, really underrepresented in the fandom. And I think most fans would have guessed that was the case, but they might not have realized just how bad it was. While I would still expect M/M to be the most popular, given what I stated earlier, the fact that F/F is that far behind both M/M and M/F is… upsetting. Like, the discrepancy shouldn’t be THAT big. 5.7%. There are so many female characters in this show, interesting ones, who interact with each other and have complicated relationships. It doesn’t seem like it should be possible for numbers to be so extreme.

Some good news: we can always just write more F/F! I’ve been talking about potentially planning an F/F event and I’m definitely moving forward with that (let me know if you’re interested!) I’ll also soon be starting a blog to host that event and any other events that relate to F/F, basically a home for F/F CK content. If you’d be interested in helping mod that, please let me know for that as well.

Bro I don’t understand why some show writers give us so much evidence pointing towards a gay/queer/lesbian relationship and then they force them into a straight one. Cobra Kai writers specifically.

Hawkmetri has so much potential, if they’ll just realize that they clearly have feelings for each other and get together. We still don’t know what will happen in season six, but I’m always imagining what may go down and if it could lead to their becoming a couple. I don’t know, there’s so many ways S6 could go and there’s still a possibility, but it’s very slim. Considering all of the moments Hawk and Demetri have already had together and it all being for nothing, we may have to deal with Demetri and Yasmin’s closeted asses pining for their best friends until the end of the show.

I see some YasMoon on your page and I’m very 👀👀👀 For the AU ask game, maybe an AU where YASMINE is the one Moon gets together with at the end of Season 2???

1. In this one Yasmine flies back from Paris much earlier (by herself like when coming to Prom) since she wants to go back to her mom’s after having a fight with her dad and his girlfriend buuttt she has no friends left so she starts apologizing to others including Sam and Aisha (but they’re understandably still pissed off so let’s just say she still needs to run off the Robinson’s front lawn before Aisha turns the sprinklers on) and Moon whom’s more understanding and they reconnect.

2. They start dating after Moon starts gushing about this new crush she has at her gymnastics class and yeah yeah Yasmine really doesn’t need to hear about it all right now but she starts paying attention the minute Moon mentions that her name is Piper Elswith and she’s so cool but she feels so confused about it… right when Yasmine combusts at the shock that Moon is actually into other girls and after blurting it out in total surprise she kisses her and wow.

3. Yasmine’s problem is that she likes Moon borrowing her clothes because she always looks better than Yasmine does in them so she goes to the extent of buying clothes specifically for Moon to steal but the problem is Moon rarely ever wants to share clothes and if she does it’s recommending her clothes to Yasmine, so Yasmine decides to start “borrowing” stealing all Moon’s clothes so when Moon asks for them back she can be like “Hmm, that dress? Must’ve lost it. Hey, if you’re looking for an upgrade try this one from Chanel PLUS the perfect scarf”.

4. Moon’s most worried about her Aisha since they’ve been becoming friends over the summer and she doesn’t wanna pull a Sam by getting with Yasmine but while Aisha is still a bit shocked at hearing the news she’s still pretty reluctant to forgive Yasmine for it all, but okay to continue hanging out with Moon as long as she doesn’t try to bulldoze her into anything about Yasmine (which Moon gladly understands).

5. Relating to 3, Moon did think Yasmine’s chakra’s were at best when she was rocking Moon’s favourite scarf.

Yasmine looks up from her compact mirror, her sharp blue eyes meeting Moon’s gaze with an inquisitive intensity that would’ve made anyone flinch.

But not Moon. A perfectly shaped brow arches elegantly, silently posing a question.

Moon gave a subtle jerk of her chin in response.

Yasmine casts a brief glance over her shoulder, her golden beach waves of hair flowing gracefully with her movement.

She gives the boy a fleeting second of her attention before turning back to Moon, rolling her eyes and letting out a scoff. "In his pathetic dreams."

“How about mine?”

"Hmm." Yasmine murmurs, snapping the compact mirror shut with a sharp click that seemed to echo loudly in Moon's ears. She turns fully towards Moon, her gaze unwavering and her focus now entirely on the conversation between them.

A cheshire grin spreads across Yasmine's red lips, her blue eyes sparkling with mischief as she leans in closer. "That depends..." She began, her voice trailing off teasingly.

"On what?" Moon chuckled softly, curiosity piqued.

“Did you order my drink with extra cherries?”

“Yes.” Moon nods, smiling. “Even made sure they were fresh and organic.”

"Ah," Yasmine's grin widened, her eyes twinkling with delight. "You know me so well."

Moon's smile deepened as she nodded, pleased to have made Yasmine smile. "Always." she replied warmly.

This is so cute 😍💖 I can see it one of two ways

If they're dating Reader and wooing her, then I think Moon and Yasmine would wait a few dates before initiating a kiss. They want to make her comfortable in the idea of becoming a part of their relationship. So when they're sitting together in a dark corner of a restauran,, they both get this feeling that it's time. So Yasmine scoots closer to Reader and shares a look with Moon. She's not very subtle, so when she put a hand on Reader's thigh, she has to come out and say, "We really wanna kiss you."

It's honestly so cute and when they kiss, it's sweet. When they pull away from each other, Moon gently turns Reader's face to her and kisses her next. They're so gentle with Reader, soft lips and strawberry chapstick. Then they're kissing each other and giggling together.

The other idea leans into S1 Yasmine and Moon, when they're still in their mean girl phase and Reader is one of the girls they tease and mock. They laugh at her and make fun of her in public, but behind closed doors they are talking about all the things they want to do to her.

Then one day, they are taunting her in the library. Yasmine is being especially nasty and pinching Reader's fatty arms and sides. Moon is teasing by playing with Reader's hair, laughing in her ear, but looses herself for a moment and kisses Reader's neck. It makes the girl jump and look at her weirdly. Everything devolves from there, with Yasmine saying stuff like, "You're not gonna return the favor? Ya know, we've been thinking about you for a while now. It seems a little rude that you disregard us like that."

Next thing they now, Yasmine is sitting on Reader's lap and kissing her hard, switching off between her and Moon. When Moon wants a turn, she pulls Reader out of the heavy kiss with Yas just to take her place. It's a lot and Reader has to catch her breath when she has the few seconds between kisses, submissive to their mean girl power.

Imagine an AU where Yasmine doesn't dance around the point for 5 seasons and actually fucking TELLS Moon she's In Lesbians with her after Moon breaks up with Piper. Imagine Yasmine not being so cripplingly terrified of her own sexuality that she jumps into the world's most shallow mutual beard relationship to try and hide her feelings. Imagine Yasmine standing in the pouring February rain outside Moon's door, hands full of strawberry heart candy boxes, and bouquets bursting with hyacinth, flax, hydrangea and white rose, and even a whole fucking organic raspberry smoothie, however the hell she managed to fit that in there.

Imagine Yasmine spilling her heart out, saying she only ever lashed out at Moon at the Canyon party because she was gutted at the thought her best friend--the girl she allowed her to know her in ways most could never dream of--would pick some stupid-haired stranger over her. Imagine her eyes growing damp, and her thanking the powers that be that she was already dripping all over Moon's porch too much for her friend to notice a little extra moisture. Imagine Moon chastising her, gently but firmly. Telling her she's going to get sick if she stands out in the soaking wet cold for much longer.

And then Moon ushers her inside, dries her off with a fluffy paisley-print towel. Wraps her in blankets and sits her on the couch. Gets them blunts to numb out the pain of two broken hearts.

When Moon flicks her lighter, Yasmine's phone screen lights up too. A concerned text from her mom, fretting over her driving in the storm. Understandable--Yasmine doesn't have the best driving record on the clearest of days.

Moon notices Yasmine's lockscreen is a picture they took ages ago. Freshman year, a few weeks after they started getting adventurous in the back of the Range Rover. Squeezed together in a mall photo booth, Yasmine's lips squashed against Moon's cheek. Yasmine's eyes shut in sleepy happiness, her beam so big that her one visible dimple was widened into a little crater.

That kind of simple joy seemed so distant now. Something from a past life, long since torn apart by Yasmine's ego and cruelty and ruthless drive to make it to the top. Her terror of irreparably falling from grace if people knew who she really was. Who she truly loved.

But maybe she and Moon can have it back if Yasmine puts on her big girl panties and sucks it up. Grows some balls. (Or...lady balls. Whatever.) Admits she acted like a conceited bitch, and took the one person for granted who was prepared to follow her almost to the ends of the earth. Tell Moon that half a year without her interwoven into Yasmine's life as tightly as a French braid was the hardest half a year Yasmine's ever had.

Because that summer had chipped away at Yasmine like a blunted carving knife. It sliced off little pieces of her every time she wondered if Moon was happy she was gone, or what Stupid Blue Mohawk could give that Yasmine couldn't.

Because that fall had eaten at Yasmine with a dull, persistent ache. Moon held her at arm's length, insisting on "just friends" while she swapped kisses with Piper in the hallway. A distance that felt like thousands of miles when Yasmine had once been so close that she could feel soft, aloe-apricot-lotioned skin against hers and smell lilac, lily of the valley, and hazelwood musk wreathing around her.

And Yasmine is done missing out on the beautiful things in life because she's too busy living in fear of what others think.

"I want you," she says. "For better, for worse, whatever. Whatever the future brings, I want to face it with you. And if that means--if that means you need me to wait for you, I will. If you need a while before you can be with someone like that again, then I'll be there when you're ready. Because I love you, and I'm tired of worrying about people not accepting it. Because I don't fucking care anymore."

And maybe it's the blunt talking--or the sugar from all the candy their munchies made short work of--but it feels like the next second, Moon is kissing her a thousand times harder than she used to.

"And I don't give a fuck about my dad's wedding," Yasmine finds a way to squeeze out, long after their limbs (and mouths) are entangled on Moon's bed. "All that asshole ever does is give me shit about how I don't have a boyfriend, so he can suck it. I'm taking you to junior prom."

Moon brightens. "Really?"

"Uh, yeah. And I'm gonna rent us the best limo. And take you to the fanciest dinner. And get you a corsage that makes everyone else's look like they dug them out of the garbage."

Then Moon laughs and leans into her, and god, she missed this. "Well, then I look forward to it."

And just like that, Yasmine's future is a vast, majestic, and insurmountable thing, as bright and gleaming as the ocean on a sunny day. And as it washes over her, one salt-spray day at a time, it seems to bring one nice surprise after another.

There are dances to be had, pressed into each other in shimmering gowns and screaming when their favorite songs come on. There are quiet spots to be found, up on secluded hills with their arms circling one another's shoulders as they look over that ethereal blend of rolling city lights and faint stars. There are beaches to be walked, manicured hand in manicured hand.

And sure, maybe Yasmine will get a little bit disinherited along the way. Old-fashioned parents had a way of not understanding these kinds of things.

But it'll all be worth it if it ends with her getting the girl.

Hilariously, I actually made this moodboard sometime like. Last spring??? And I remember being like "wow!!! This would be a really cute February/Valentine's Day post!!! Miracle of miracles, I guess, and my life dissolved into such utter pandemonium in the next several months after I made this that I simply did not manage to post this bad boy before next Valentine's Day rolled around. And then. AND THEN. I STILL didn't manage to post it before midnight on the National Love Day itself ^^; Ahhhh uhhhhh just ignore that ^^;

Utterly unashamed of how pink and cutesy and fluffy this ended up being. That's just what hyperfemme lesbians are like on Valentine's, what can I say!!! Although looking at this thing always makes me hungry. God, I want those candy hearts and those smoothies so bad ;_____; I also would like a cute girlfriend to sit on a hill with and overlook the city lights and a cute girlfriend whose manicured hand I can hold on the beach, but that is neither here nor there. It’s almost time for Cobra Kai Sapphic Summer!

What:

A month-long event exclusively for F/F Cobra Kai content, with prompts

When:

August 4th - September 3rd

What can we make?

Art, fanfic, edits, whatever appeals to you!

How many prompts are there?

There will be two prompts per week, so 8 prompts total. Feel free to take your pick of either prompt each week. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can totally submit a project for each individual prompt and/or even combine both prompts into one project; but that’s certainly not expected.

In fact, the event is designed the way it is to try and help people to take it easy and not get overwhelmed, which is always a possibility when you’re trying to create in a short time frame. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself!

During the event, when you’re ready to submit your art, fic, edit, etc, simply @ us here at @ckfemslashnetwork and tag #cksapphicsummer and we’ll make sure your work gets reblogged to our blog.

Prompt: Campfire / Starlight

Week 4 is Rarepair Week, which we’re defining as any F/F CK pairing with less than 30 fics; so, basically anything besides Samtory and Carmanda. Popular M/F or M/M ships that have been genderbent also wouldn’t count (bc of the ‘popular’ bit).

We encourage you to try creating for a ship that doesn’t get a lot of love, or that you yourself haven’t had a chance to make something for before. (If you end up making something that isn’t for a rarepair, we’ll still post it, but it just won’t go up on the blog until after Rarepair Week itself is over).
