Everyone on the internet was joking about how the cities of Seattle and Tacoma were a pair of boobs. Nobody could agree if Yakima or Spokane was the puss, and there was a huge debate over this. I was team Yakima. I do not live in Washington.

My thrift find of yesterday, and probably the best thing I will find all month, is this glass from Grant's Brewpub in Yakima, WA. Bert Grant was a legend (and not just in his own mind), having introduced the PNW to IPA's -- now the place is lousy with 'em, so he's the one to blame. The brewery under new ownership (he sold in 1995) did not survive, likely because they had no idea how to brew what he did. Bert passed on in 2001 and I am happy to say that I knew the guy.

Bought a vintage postcard (undated 1960s) the other day of downtown Yakima, WA -- the intersection at Yakima Avenue and North First Street, I recognised immediately. The angle in the photo makes it hard to see what all businesses were on The Ave and yet it’s apparent there were a whole lot of them, in fact more than there are today.
And the only things clearly visible on the postcard that are still there are the two tall buildings: the Larson Building (looming at right, constructed 1931) and the Chinook Tower (in the distance, started 1930 but finished 1951).
Here’s another postcard found online which was snapped a couple blocks further up this street in the same timeframe. And along with the Chinook Tower you can make out the Eddy’s Bread wall advertisement on the Great Western Building [built 1911], the Newberry’s vertical sign, and the Commerical Hotel sign on my postcard for reference:

I was not aware that the Valley Mall in Union Gap, WA put out a bobblehead of, uh... apple-headed Archaeologist Scott.
