Maybe it’s bc I’m a bit older than the average byler truther but I’ve lived through the peak of queerbaiting in media and this ain’t it.

Even just rationally speaking, if Byler was going to be unrequited, most, if not all, of it would’ve been wrapped up this season. We wouldn’t be going into the last season with so much up in the air—Mike and El still not talking after a “love confession”, the lie about the painting, Will having only had a coded coming out with Jonathan, etc. Mike and Will spent the entire season having heart to hearts that predominantly focused on Mike’s relationship issues to show that their friendship is rooted in being vulnerable with one another. There’s no way, at the very least, Will wouldn’t come out, even in a vague sort of way, to Mike. Especially considering that they’ve show us that Mike isn’t homophobic—that he defended Will’s honor against the homophobic bullies when Will was missing.

So if they waited for Season 5, and all of this led to him being rejected at the very end, in a season with no new characters, they’d literally be giving Will a slowburn sad ending. It would mean that they set up Will to have literally maybe one happy character arc over the course of the show (Getting a Dad who loves him, Hopper). S1: Kidnapped and trapped in the Upside Down S2: Possessed S3: Ignored, heartbroken and then forced to move away from his friends S4: In “unrequited” love with his best friend who’s dating his sister and his entire arc is pushing them together at great personal cost S5: Rejected by the only character he’s shown to have feelings for after finally opening up about being queer???

Like can you think of any other character on the show that has no happy arcs?

Even El, who has the most tragic backstory, is ending the story with a full family, (most likely) her best friend back at her side, the people who harmed her her entire life gone, and freedom from being used for her powers. And if Byler isn’t canon, she’s ending it with a love interest.

I know people have been burned with similar media like IT and whatnot, but at the end of the day, while IT can deviate a bit, they’re trying to stay true to source material. Stranger Things has no source material and has already shown that it’s not above “straight-baiting” (maybe the assumption shouldn’t be everyone is straight until proven otherwise oop). The Duffer Brothers have also already been clear about not wanting a sad ending (talking about how you can’t kill Mike bc that’s too sad—that becomes a different show). So IMO, there’s nothing to worry about.
