I'm also going to base off of the TV series, so it may be a little inconsistent? Idk xc like, firstly the issues because of course there's so many questions of how does these dragons live there?

Let's not forget that Deathsongs eat other dragons...

How can he stop all these fights, how can he give everyone a space in that cramped mushroom hell to live like they used to in the wild, in the outside world?

So I'm having this wild idea that there starts to be fights between dragons and the furries tries to stop them and the light fury gets attacked by the screaming death and voila, one of the tailfins gone. Now toothless has to find a way to help her and so starts redemption arcs for both furries for different reasons which I guess you can tell what I'm hinting at here >- > it's not the best idea, but it's something I suppose. Since the Devildom is so different to the human world, maybe they pushed aside the thought of their hay fever (or they play forgot because same, it just happens, and you remember once it comes back)

The alarm rings once their nose gets itchy, throat a bit scratchy as if it weren’t properly hydrated, and eyes get a little watery from time to time

“P-Please don’t bother today! I’m not feeling so g-” Sneeze, “good…”

“Yo, it’s the Great Mammon! Better open up now before I kick down the door!”

A chortle bubbled up their throat, making them cough a little afterwards due to the itch there. “Sure thing~... but seriously, Mammon, please leave… I feel miserable”

Their lock clicking open startled them. Sure enough the Avatar of Greed was there

He let himself in and placed the small bag in their lap. “Lucifer told me… Sheesh, can’t believe he was this forgetful! Even after having Satan bother him a whole day to get this for ya he still forgot.”

From then on, they became more open to notify Mammon about any of their ailments or bad moods

Rest assured, he’s a sweetheart and becomes so gentle around them to help any way he can

Snacks? He’ll fight Beel for them. Medicines? He gladly goes up to buy those (just give him a detailed list of what he’s looking for, list the active ingredients) Alone time? The most he can do is wait outside their door, sorry lol  A shoulder to cry on bc they feel so miserable, someone to squeeze as much as they need until they feel better? He’s more than signed up!

Once Mammon has warmed up to them, he will do all he can to make them feel better

May not be the best nurse, but his lungs and throat are potent enough to holler someone over to check you and help with those matters

He’s prone to panic when symptoms begin, but a quick reassurance can calm him significantly

Overall, someone nice to be taking care of you. Definitely brings more moral and emotional support than acting as a nurse or reminder of taking meds, but still much better than other people out there

Shadow Young: The Ultimate Heylin Warrior

So I was rereading some old theories about Shadow, and I realized that I completely overlooked such a blatant coincidence!

The Yin-Yang Paradigm | Parallels between the Goddess Jiu Tian Xuan Nu and Shadow

The Yin-Yang Paradigm can take a backseat. It's an interesting read, but the only part we need is the line from the Xiaolin Chronicles Special Edition Preface.

In ancient China,the great Xiaolin Master Dashi unlocked the secrets to supreme martial arts powers.  He became a Xiaolin Dragon–a force of light–defender of good.

Where there is yang, there must be yin.  The evil witch Wuya stole Dashi’s secrets and molded herself into the embodiment of darkness–the Heylin Dragon.

Why is assigning Wuya, the original Heylin Dragon Warrior, as an embodiment of yin energy important? Because the Chinese Goddess, Jiu Tian Xuan Nu, is also known as "The Ultimate Yin." Shadow shares almost all her aspects with this deity. This means that Shadow was (or is?) destined to become The Ultimate Heylin Warrior.

What does that even mean? [Spoilers under the cut]

Dashi was the first Xiaolin Dragon Warrior. Wuya stole his techniques and molded herself into a Heylin Dragon. At the end of XC it is stated that Chase ascends to the level of a Heylin Dragon, quite literally.

While Wuya doesn't possess the same literal transformation that Chase has associated with the title of "Dragon," it still bears mentioning that both achieved this level of skill.

How Xiaolin Dragon Warriors--warriors of light--differ from Heylin Dragon Warriors--warriors of darkness--is that Xiaolin Warriors ascend to the level of Dragon when they successfully ride and pair with an actual dragon.

Chase was never able to do this, and he despised his fellow Monks (and brother) for moving on without him. In addition, as part of being a Xiaolin Dragon Warrior, one must give up part of their unique abilities and channel them into a mystical item for future generations of Xiaolin Warriors to use--these are the Shen Gong Wu. Chase had worked so hard for what little power he had, that he didn't think it was right for him to suddenly give it up for the sake of posterity.

While not much is known about Wuya, we do know that she craved power. Before Dashi defeated her in the first Xiaolin Showdown, she might have been well on her way to taking power from the whole world. It's purposefully left ambiguous and we are never truly meant to know. What is certain is that Wuya definitely could have done all, or possibly more, than Chase did in this Heylin Dragon Form.

So how does all this yin and yang relate back to Shadow?

As stated in the title of this post, I believe Shadow was destined to become the Ultimate Yin. In this context of "Xiao-yang" and "Hey-yin," this means that Shadow is slated to become the Ultimate Heylin Warrior. But Jiu Tian Xuan Nu is very much a positive, good, and balancing force in the pantheon. How can an ultimate evil be that too?

Throughout XC Shadow is shown checking and attempting to balance Chase's evil acts. The strongest example of the imbalance within Chase & his brand of Evil and how Shadow reacts to that imbalance can be seen in "Chase Lays an Egg." Not only does Shadow roll her eyes at Chase's gluttony early on, insisting that there are better (and more Evil) things to do, but she also shows extreme disgust over Chase's affection for the Egg. After the Egg is stolen, Chase prompts Shadow to go into the Xiaolin Temple and get back his Egg. Shadow refuses, and Chase darts off to get it himself. Shadow cooks up her own plan to destroy the Egg and revert Chase back to his usual, Evil self. Shadow's whole motivations towards Chase after episode 8, "Out of Ping Pong's Mind," can mostly be summed up as her trying to get him to be the most Evil version of himself. Over time she gets annoyed that he doesn't change and that eventually motivates her in part to leave ("Shadow's Role and Abuse" 2017).

So early on, Shadow already has an ideal of the Evil Chase should be living up to, but isn't. This is likely why Wuya and Shadow quickly and easily bonded--both possess extremely powerful yin energy. It's strange that returning Wuya to a solidly form is all Shadow's idea, but then Shadow seems surprised when her vision leads her back to Wuya an episode later ("Back in the Flesh Again," "Call of the Dragon Spirit"). I think it's only natural that Wuya would want to eliminate Shadow from the competition to be the strongest Heylin force. Wuya might not know that this is even coming, however.

The only real reason Wuya gives to eliminate Shadow at the end of the series is that Wuya saw Shadow as a tool to lead her to Princess Kaila, who Wuya believes was involved with her wrongful imprisonment by Dashi inside the spring inside the puzzle box for over 1500 years. Wuya doesn't need Shadow any more, since Kaila is right in front of her, so Shadow does something a little out of character. She turns around on Wuya and is last shown running for her life with Princess Kaila. It's implied that the two are at least traveling together, but it's unknown if Shadow is protecting Kaila or not. Since Shadow feels a connection to Kaila, I would argue that she is protecting the princess ("Fly the Dragon!").

So if Shadow is supposed to become this Ultimate Heylin force, why is she, presumably, going to be trained by Princess Kaila--a force of good--on how to use her powers? Shadow, Kaila, and Loniani-Nui--a dragon lady shapeshifter, Dragon Partner to Chase's older brother, and Chase's Monkhood crush--all have a yin-yang symbol somewhere on their body. Nui's is on her throat chakra, Kaila's is near her heart chakra, and Shadow's is on her third eye chakra. You can read more about the significance of these placements here.

All you really need to know about the significance of these placements is that the highest chakra--and thus enlightenment--is at the top of the head. Shadow, having her yin-yang on her third eye is the one closest to reaching that enlightenment of these three women. Xiaolin is based on Shaolin Buddhism, the main goal of the religion is to attain enlightenment. Since Dragon Warriors are able to fuse and link with their dragon partners, they definitely get very close to entering the state of nirvana. Or since it's a nonsensical kid's show, it might be better described as "an empowered, altered state of being one with the world and its' knowledge." There's not enough to go on at this point unfortunately.

To back up Shadow being secretly super powerful, @p-r-imeday had an exchange with series creator, Christy Hui, on instagram where Hui casually revealed that she just likes characters with really "big hair." Which explains a lot of the design choices in XC. The Heylin characters with the longest hair are Shadow, then Wuya, and then Chase. Chase even gets slightly longer hair when he goes super size and absorbs all the chi he possibly can. Wuya's hair is still slightly longer due to the tight curl at the end.

So Shadow already has some construct of what Evil is supposed to be in her mind, and she is willing to reinforce that ideal. Wuya, the only other major embodiment of yin, sees Shadow as a threat, albeit by association with Wuya's real target. And Shadow is the closest to enlightenment because of the placement of her yin-yang being so close to the crown chakra, in addition to her having the longest hair in canon, which makes her the most powerful being.

Shadow's role as the Ultimate Heylin Warrior would be to enforce a strict view of Evil onto the Heylin side. While XC did greatly limit the number of visibly active villains, the series as a whole is well known for having a plethora of antagonists who operated in evil areas, but relatively outside the Xiaolin-Heylin conflict. Shadow would essentially be out there saying, "Hey, if you're going to use that Wu you gotta fight the Xiaolin Order. Or Else." She would also be required to show up to fight Evils that don't fit her strict interpretation of what "Evil" is, thus aiding the side of good.

I describe it best here, in that the best way to paint the world grey is to start with pure white and pure black, and constantly have them mixing with each other. Because at the end of the day, the world Dashi has created through his actions is one in which very few dots of black are allowed to exist, while the Xiaolin Order stands blinding in its' light.

Without Shadow forcing people who want to use Wu to enter the fray, XC leaves us with Jack, Wuya, and... Tiny Sim? Sim isn't interested in Wu at all, and Jack was only in it due to Wuya (Salvadore serves Wuya, so I'm not mentioning him in this list). The Xiaolin Order has five Monks being trained to become Dragon Warriors. It's grossly imbalanced. Shadow is needed to correct that balance. And thus, a proper, balanced world order would be achieved.

TL;DR:

Shadow is the most powerful being in all of XC because she has really long hair.

This is the first chapter from jakes perspective, I hope you enjoy!

This shouldn’t be too bad, just some rich kids going to some island. Ill be back in no time.

I check that everyone’s there, and take off. No point in making in introduction. I put the girl in autopilot and kick my boots up. She’ll land in no time. Probably shouldn’t be wearing down the equipment like this, but who gives a fuck. If this shits got autopilot in it, it can handle some scratches.

“Excuse me, it’s Jake right? Weren’t we supposed to have landed by now...?”

I hear some faint noises, but it’s probably just those kids. They ever learnt how to be nice on a plane?

“Wait, are you asleep?” She yells

“Hrn?” I dart up and yank my boots off the dash.

She gets this weird look on her face, like she’s having some flashback. Thought they didn’t let them have booze here, I’ll have to take a look. But then I see her face. She looks like the most goddamn beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. She has her arms crossed, and you can see she isn’t taking crap from anyone. Things are in slow motion for a sec. Weird.

“Listen, Princess, don’tcha know it’s rude to wake someone who’s takin a nap?”

“Princess?”

“What can I say, I give nicknames to people who annoy me.” I say with a smile. She’s not too annoying, but what’s so bad about a name?

“Well in that case, I’ll call you top gun.” Hey, the nicknames are my thing!

“Fine, call me that. He was a cool dude.”

“Anyway, relax. We ain’t landing til’...” I check the jazz, but it’s all wrong.

“The hell?! That time ain’t right, and that ain’t either...” What happened to this thing? I bang on the instruments a few times, but it’s not doin anything.

“You sure you know what you’re doing?” Well, princess, this normally doesn’t happen, but I know my way around.

“If you knew half the things I survived, you’d bet on me to do any-” Turbulence hits me out of nowhere, and where the fuck is this even coming from? It was sun all around a second ago!

“Aw just great, the storm fronts comin’ in!” Yep Jake, we know.

I lean in and grab the yoke. I Ain’t dyin here.

“Get your ass in a seat, hear? And tell everyone to buckle up!”

“But-” Princess, this is not the time for arguing!

“Now, Princess!” Nobody’s dying today. Not me, not Princess.

Balled lightning? Where’d that shit come from?! I flip the intercom to passengers. I hear screams and crap. Princess is probably with some hot football boyfriend. Why am I thinking about some college drama?! I’m trying not to die!

“This is totally normal!!” Yeah this isn’t normal. You don’t sound normal.

WHERED BALLED LIGHTNING COME FROM?! I haven’t seen that in forever!

BOOM! Sparks start flying, and I don’t mean the sexy kind.

“Welp, engines just lost power! Bringing her down manually! Everyone hold on!” Don’t fuck this up, don’t fuck this up-

I can see clear sky... I’m almost out!

“Just a little farther... I think we’re almost out!”

I’m flying this thing like a radio glider, but it’s going hella fast

I hear princess and some guy marveling about the view. In case you haven’t noticed, were landing here!

“Get a good look now, cause we’re coming in fast!” Don’t want Princess breaking her ankles.

“Welcome to La Huerta.” Reminds me if Costa Rica, nice tropical place. Wow, didn’t realize it had a massive volcano. Looks like it’s still active too.

“This is La Huerta tail number XC-DMK, requesting emergency priority to land!”

No response. Are you serious, Carlos!

“Carlos! Pick up ya lazy bastard, it’s Jake!”

“Ignoring me won’t make me forget the hundred bucks you owe me! Like it or not, we’re coming in!”

I land the girl down on some dirt airstrip. Not the best, but it is a tropical island. These kids are lucky they’re not dead. Hopefully Princess is ok. Carlos probably set up some fancy waiting area where she can relax. God, why am I thinking about this chick so much? I don’t even know her name!

I pull into the hangar and open the doors.

“Rough landing, Top Gun. Hope you don’t work for tips.” She says with a smile. Jeez, she’s pretty cute. But she would be gonzo if I wasn’t flying!

“You kidding? I’m a damn hero for getting you on the ground!” Eh, she’s never flown before. Anywhere, Carlos is being an asshole.

“Carlos! Carlos, I need a tune-up!” I go to march up to Carlos, but I wait for a minute to hear the gossip. Honestly what am I’m 14? I hear princess talking to that football guy. Sean Gayle I think, I saw a few of his games.

She reaches for her suitcase handle at the same time he does. Sounds like this is a play and they’re going to break into song.

“Oh, sorry!” Captain America says. Then Maybelline struts over and throws her arms around cap. She’s got so much makeup on her face must be an inch bigger. “Ugh, could you be any more desperate?” Sounds like Maybelline is Caps chick. Who knows, maybe she’s the kind to date nerds.

Then Maybelline starts yelling at her, and macho man comes over and is shocked that she doesn’t follow football. Macho, it’s not that big of a deal. Now she’s yelling about her trying to be popular. With those looks? How could she not be the most popular gal there? Wow, she played it cool and said she was gorgeous and must be together. Would not of done that myself, but hey, Princess seems like the smart type. Oh snap! Turns out Maybelline and captain America aren’t together anymore! Anyway, I should go find Carlos.

I get there, and this place is deserted. No sign of anyone. I run back down to the people.

“There’s no one here!” Did they lead me here on some damn chase to get a free flight?

“There should be here in a shuttle to take us up to the main resort but...” Damn, tour guide lady looks pretty nervous.

“I’m sure it’s just a slight delay!” Now she’s at 800% happiness. Nice try, but no one is naturally that happy.

“The hell with that. I’m going up to the control tower to get some answers.”

“What do you think is going on there?” Princess looks worried, reaaal worried.

“No idea... Call it a gut feeling, but whatever it is ain’t good. So princess, you coming?” Please say yes... say yes... Jesus what am I doing? I sound like I’m asking my mom to go to kyles.

Tour lady says some shit about taking everyone to the hotel, but I’m really hoping Princess comes. It doesn’t seem like a good idea to go alone. Ariel decided to go down to the beach, good for her.

“I could go with you-!” Maybelline, this ain’t an open call.

“Wasn’t talking to you, Maybelline.”

“So it’s cool if I join you?” Princess asks. Yep. Definitely yes.

“You gotta ask permission for everything? Come on, Princess.”

“This place is gorgeous. Do you fly out here a lot, Top Gun?” She asks

Here and every other privately owned resort island in the Caribbean. The favored vacation spot of the young and the privileged.” She’s probably in some rich girl sorority, but maybe one of the few that aren’t stuck up and obsessed with themselves.

“You don’t sound like you like it very much.” Well, not everyone’s job is their passion. At least I had a chance to fly.

“Hey, it pays the bar tab.” I try to seem cool, but I probably just sound like an alcoholic. Nice job, Jake. Rebecca would be laughing her ass off if she saw me acting like this.

“So, what did you do before this?” Jesus Princess, you a spy or something? Why do you have to know everything?

“What is this anyway, 20 questions?” Damn I sound angry. God, I’m just going to be the crazy pilot here.

“Sorry.” Don’t sound too sorry t’me, Princess. I should probably learn this girl’s name. We stay silent for a minute, but this girl’s too pretty to be a spy.

“Fighter Pilot. Navy.” Yeah, shouldn’t of said that. Yep, that’s the kind of affect a spy would have on you. Making you just spill everything.

“I was good at it too. Best in my class, until I got discharged.” Jake, don’t tell her why. Just don’t.

“What happened?” Godamnit Princess, you had to ask. Erm, I’ll think of something.

“Punched my commanding officer in the jaw.” Well, that’s partially true at least.

“...I’m sure he deserved it.” Damn right he did, and stop looking so suprised.

“Yeah. He did.”

“I’ve been ferrying around rich folks around the Caribbean and sleeping in a beach hammock in Costa Rica ever since.” Damnit Jake, you gotta tell her where you are now too? What’s next, tell her to turn you in for 750,000 bucks?

“That sounds lonely.”

“Uh, yeah, that’s the appeal.” I force a smile, but she probably sees right through me. Damnit, Princess.

“I mean, I get wanting to get away for a little while, but... don’t you want more?” Nope. Not after Mike. Ain’t so bad watching the sunset with a beer.

“Someone to come home to... someone to listen to you... someone to hold you all through the night...” Shit, Princess. You trying to bring it back? But who knows, maybe she thinks I’m hot. There’s a reason I kept the hair the way it is.

“You offering, Princess?”

“What? No, I... I just meant... in theory...” Alright, time to change the subject. Back to your super interesting past

“In theory, I had been the best pilot the navy had ever seen. In practice... Well you can’t beat a cold beer and a Caribbean sunset.” Yeah, we do t need to talk about practice.

We start climbing the stairs up the control tower, but a step cracks in half under Princess!

“Jake!” I grab her as fast as I can and pull her into my arms. Ain’t losing anyone here.

“Gotcha!” I yell. What is she, a fish?

“I think you just saved my life!” No sweat, Princess. A good princess needs a knight.

“Now you owe me one. Cmon.” A nice cold beer, perhaps?

We get to the top of the tower, and I push open the door. I start to yell,

“Carlos you dumb- Hey, what the...” But there’s no one here.

“There’s no one here,” Wow, i had no idea, Princess.

“Thanks, eagle eyes. I couldn’t tell.”

There’s dust all over the place. Am I at the wrong airport or shit?

“Are you sure they still use this airstrip?”

“Of course I’m sure, I was here a few days ago, And I’m damn sure...” No, this can’t be right... what am I doing? I walk over to the window, and everything is so beautiful, there’s this red and blue light, like a beautiful aura, and maybe I should come here instead of Costa Rica, maybe...

“Jake?” I hear Princess yell. I snap out of it

“Wha...” I know princess, ain’t it beautiful? Almost as beautiful as you. Oh shit, please say I didn’t say that out loud, and yes, I didn’t. I sound like I’m on some shit reality tv show.

Then I feel Princess’ fingers lace with mine. This feels amazing, but what am I doing?

“Jake... What is this?” She says, and all I want to do there is make her feel safe. My god, what am I doing? Jake, snap out of it! This is just some college girl that is going on vacation and she happens to be very, very attractive! But the truth is, I have no idea.

“I... I don’t know.” Then I see her staring into my eyes, and I find hers. They’re this beautiful blue, and these lights make them look even better.I haven’t even realized how close our faces are. I just stand there, shocked of how amazing this girl is. Some girl that I don’t even know what her name is. A girl I’ve just met. But it feels like I’ve known her for a thousand lives.

“Jake, I...”

Everything feels like it’s in slow motion... but all I can focus on is her.

“Hey... It stopped.” Is she talking about my ability to function?

I look down and see that I’m still holding her hand in mine.

“*cough* Uh... sorry.” I drop her hand. Now we have to ignore how amazing and weird and awkward that was.

“Look, it must’ve been something... Weird with the glass here. Who knows. Forget it, just... Come on.” All I can think of is her. But why in the world do I think that was something? That was just a gut instinct, to be protected. I duck out of the room, and me and princess wind our way up the road, silent, and she looks like she’s about to damn pass out, until we see this swanky ass hotel.

“So this is it, huh? Been to this island 50 times, and never been off the airstrip...” Yeah, these kids are definitely privileged.

“The Celestial!” Princess calls out.

“Well, come on then. You paid me to bring you here, so that’s what I’m doing.” We head towards the lobby, going through some fancy marble hallways.

“So, you’ve never stayed here? Are you taking off again after this, or you gonna stick around awhile?” She sounds like she’s begging me to stay, but you know what I’ve gotta do.

“Just gotta get Carlos to get my plane refueled, and I’m off. Got a bottle of anejo calling my name back in Costa Rica.”

“Try not to miss me too much, Princess.” I flash a smile and I probably look like a slug.

We walk in the lobby, and...

“Huh?” Princess says

“What the-” The place is deserted. No one in sight except us.

“I... I don’t understand...” Well lady, you’re the tour guide. You should be tour guiding us.

There’s a half finished wine glass,lipstick still on the rim but coated with dust. That ain’t normal.

“Hey, uh, Ellie... Do you happen to know...” Yeah cap, I think if she knew we’d have answers. And that’s her name, Ellie! Short and sweet.

“Where the hell is everyone?” Cap finishes.

Spektr-RG commences sky scanning

ROSCOSMOS & DLR - Spektr-RG Mission patch. Dec. 23, 2019 Spektr-RG orbital x-ray observatory launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on July 13, 2019 starts observing the sky of stars. On December 8, the Spektr-RG spacecraft designed by NPO Lavochkin (part of Roscosmos State Corporation) moving at the orbit around the L2 libration point 1.5 million kilometers away from Earth made one revolution around the Earthward axis. Thus, a test scan along the large circle was conducted. This marked the beginning of the whole sky of stars scanning which is to last for four years.

Following the Earth moving around the Sun, x-ray telescopes aboard the observatory - ART-XC (Russia) иeROSITA (Germany) will get the sky map every six months, which will be several times more sensitive than all the previous x-ray maps before. Four years later, the sum of eight independent maps will help achieve record sensitivity and discover about 3 millions of active galaxy cores and quasars, a hundred thousand of galactic clusters and groups, as well as about half a million active stars, white dwarf stars, pulsars and supernova remnants, neutron stars and black holes in our Galaxy. Comparing separate sky maps will allow astrophysicists follow the fluctuation of millions x-ray sources in the sky. The main scientific task of sky scanning is to explore the largescale structure of the Universe and study the nature of dark matter and dark energy. At the same time, the record scanning sensitivity and massive selection of various types of x-ray sources will have a colossal potential for new discoveries and allow researching in all the modern high-energy astrophysics spheres. Prior to sky scanning the scientists at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany worked hard to set up and calibrate two telescopes of the observatory. This work ended up in thorough check observations when the observatory telescopes were tested watching the real astrophysical objects. eROSITA telescope capabilities to conduct deep scanning of sites dozens square degrees in area are shown in the picture below (mini-scan image can be also seen at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics website).

X-ray map of the galactic disk area (the so-called Galactic Ridge), received by the eROSITA telescope in October 2019. The map of 25 square degrees in area shows multiple x-ray sources located both in our Galaxy, as well as farawayquasars. Galactic objects such as clusters of young stars actively emitting x-rays are also of great interest. The map also shows pulsars, supernova remnants with the interstellar gas. Diffuse x-ray emission zones are also visible. Light blue and green colours correspond to the photon high energy (emitted by gas heated to dozens of millions degrees, while the red colour means lower temperature gasses from hundreds of thousands to million degrees).

The Lockman Hole is a unique area in the sky where x-ray emission is minimal allowing to research faraway quasars and galaxy clusters. eROSITA detected about 6,000 x-ray sources with most of them being active galaxy cores and quasars. More than 100 galaxy clusters and several hundreds of active stars located in our Galaxy were also detected. EROSITA TAKES ITS FIRST LOOK AT THE HOT UNIVERSE Galaxy clusters, active galactic nuclei, supernova remnants and X-ray binaries have one thing in common -- they are incredibly hot and therefore emit X-rays. This type of radiation can reveal a great deal about the universe, and it is being observed by the German eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) instrument. Between 17 and 19 October 2019, all seven of eROSITA’s ‘X-ray eyes’ acquired their first combined images of the hot universe. “A first light event is always an exciting moment. After many years of preparation and development, followed by a perfect launch from the Kazakh Steppe, we can now see that all of our efforts have been worthwhile. The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) has done a fantastic job, and we are delighted that this important German mission can now begin its observations,” enthuses Thomas Mernik, eROSITA Project Manager at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) Space Administration. The development of eROSITA by MPE, which is based in Garching, near Munich, was financed by the DLR Space Administration. The occasion of first light was celebrated in Garching and at the 70th International Astronautical Congress 2019 in Washington D.C., together with the Russian partners. In addition to the German X-ray telescope, the Russian-German Spektr-RG (SRG) space observatory is also equipped with the Russian ART-XC instrument. ‘First Light,’ After a Short Delay eROSITA consists of seven individual telescope modules that collect incident X-ray radiation emitted by hot sources in the universe. Since the launch of SRG in July 2019, engineers and astrophysicists at MPE have been working on commissioning the telescope. At first, only individual components were switched on and their functionality was carefully checked out, step by step. However, in the first few weeks after being put into operation, the electronics of some of the telescope modules malfunctioned, resulting in parameters being adjusted for no apparent reason. “In order to avert possible damage to the instrument, the modules were ‘put to sleep’ and individual components were carefully ‘awakened’ so that they could be tested separately. The ‘culprit’ was suspected to be cosmic radiation, which may have triggered minor errors in some of the modules. Since then, we have come to the conclusion that the risk is acceptable, so after a brief hiatus eROSITA has now resumed full operations,” says Mernik. Since 13 October 2019, all seven modules of the X-ray telescope have been simultaneously observing the sky using their ‘tailor-made’ CCD cameras. A Historic Moment in the Life of a Telescope “This is a pivotal moment in the life of the telescope, as this is when we see for the first time how good the overall system really is. With its observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud, eROSITA has demonstrated its capabilities to impressive effect. We have obtained razor-sharp images with remarkably little background noise. These first impressions allow us to anticipate great things over the coming years,” Mernik is pleased to report. One source of the X-rays is an old acquaintance, which has already been observed with other telescopes such as XMM-Newton. “We chose the Large Magellanic Cloud because it has often been observed with other X-ray telescopes. The direct comparison with earlier images shows the true performance of eROSITA. XMM-Newton mainly observes specially selected objects and therefore sees them in great detail. eROSITA also provides detailed images -- but will study the entire hot universe. In addition, we selected this region because it is very close to the solar system -- at a distance of ‘only’ 170,000 light-years,” says Mernik. With the second observation target -- the two merging galaxy clusters A3391 and A3395 -- the opposite is the case. “Both galaxy clusters are 800 million light-years away from Earth. Here, we wanted to see how far eROSITA can look into the hot universe and how clear the images still are at this unimaginably long distance. We were all surprised by the excellent result,” Mernik is pleased to say. eROSITA will be taking more such images in the coming months in order to check out the overall performance of the German X-ray telescope. After a more than three-month-long journey, SRG has now entered orbit around the second Lagrange point of the Sun-Earth system (L2), which is 1.5 million kilometres ‘behind’ Earth, when viewed from the Sun. From here, eROSITA will embark upon a whole-sky survey, to create a map of the hot structures in the universe. eROSITA Will Create a Map of the Universe in the X-ray Spectrum An X-ray telescope observes particularly hot matter in the universe. Typical X-ray sources are binary systems, in which a star similar to the Sun and neutron star or black hole orbit about a common centre of mass. In this case, gas is drawn from the star due to the strong gravitational field of its compact companion. This gas then falls into an accretion disc surrounding the companion object. While doing so, it reaches extremely high temperatures and emits radiation in the X-ray spectrum. eROSITA was also designed to observe active galactic nuclei (AGN). These are super-massive black holes with masses of several million times that of the Sun. They are also surrounded by hot accretion discs that are easy to observe in the X-ray spectrum. In addition, one of the mission’s particular areas of focus is the discovery and mapping of galaxy clusters. These each consist of several hundred galaxies and draw in gas from their surroundings due to their gravity. The incoming gas heats up, creating intense radiation in the X-ray spectrum. Over the course of the mission, eROSITA will find and map up to 100,000 galaxy clusters. For these purposes, eROSITA will survey the entire sky every six months and create a deep and detailed map of the universe over the course of its four-year nominal mission. This enormous cosmic inventory of the hot universe will help researchers better understand the structure of the cosmos and its development. The expansion of the universe represents a major problem for astronomers. For reasons yet unknown, this expansion is accelerating. The mysterious force that is driving the universe apart is referred to as dark energy. “Since eROSITA will help us to better understand the dynamics of the largest structures in the universe, we could also learn more about cosmic expansion. This means that eROSITA will provide us with the data needed to get closer to solving the puzzle of dark energy,” explains Mernik. Spektr-RG -- A Space Mission with Numerous Partners Spektr-RG (SRG) is a space mission with numerous partners. On the Russian side, it involves the space agency Roscosmos, the space company NPO Lavochkin and the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI). The German eROSITA X-ray telescope was developed and built with funding from DLR Space Administration by the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching, near Munich, in collaboration with the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics in Potsdam (AIP) and the universities of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Hamburg and Tübingen. The universities of Munich and Bonn are also involved in the scientific evaluation of the eROSITA data. The partner institutes involved in the German telescope have created software for data analysis, mission planning and simulations, as well as parts of the hardware, but the MPE was primarily responsible for the hardware. Many components were developed there, some in partnership with selected companies from industry. The telescope was also assembled in Garching, from where it was transported to Moscow.
