🔥 on fuffy's dynamic? or anything fuffy related

I think most Fuffy shippers – me included for sure – have a habit of making Faith seem a bit too … well, nice.

Don’t get me wrong: I like Faith a lot.  Not just as a character – and she is one of my favorite characters on the show, even if she only appears in less than two dozen episodes – but on a personal level too I have a lot of empathy for her.  I think she has a pretty rough deal in life.  I think she’s very badly let down by a lot of people, both before and after becoming a Slayer.  I think the narrative itself is often far less sympathetic to her than it is to other characters. I think she’s pretty miserably unhappy most of the time, and I think her redemption arc is genuinely very good, even with the little we see of her post-Sanctuary.

That said, it feels to me that a lot of Fuffy fanfiction is written by people who have decided, whether consciously or not, that the “real” Faith is the Faith we see awkwardly asking Buffy if she wants to go the dance with her in Homecoming since she already has the tickets, or showing up on Buffy's doorstep in Amends with some crappy Christmas presents, still not quite able to admit there was never any “big party” she could have gone to instead, however obvious it is at this point, and somehow managing to make a million different heartbreaking microexpressions when Buffy says she’s glad to see her. 

Yes, I like those moments too – I like them a lot – and I think that they are definitely indicative of a real aspect of Faith, one she tries hard to keep hidden most of the time.  But I think it’s an injustice to her character to make that the sum total of her personality.  If this were all there was to Faith’s character, she wouldn’t be half as compelling.

What about the Faith who, however troubled she looked at first, manages to shrug off the fact her new boss is planning to have Willow murdered when he tells her he’s also bought her a Playstation?  What about the Faith who attacks Joyce, ties her up and threatens to kill her?  What about the Faith who fantasies about stabbing Willow and taunts Tara by telling her how much Willow used to love Oz?  What about the Faith who, right from her first appearance, is perhaps a little bit too into beating up vampires and killing demons?  What about the Faith who threatens to torture Buffy, who tries to kill Angel, who definitely does torture Wesley and who kills Professor Worth while he begs for his life?  What about the Faith who probably was going to kill Xander? What about what Faith does to Buffy in Who Are You?

I’m not saying all Fuffy authors should exclusively write angst-ridden enemies-to-lovers in which for the first 100,000 words Faith really does seem to revel in being able to kill things without consequences even as she lets her obsession with Buffy Summers lead her into actively and deliberately trying to hurt her or bring her down to her level. (Though it would perhaps be nice if some of it was like this!)  I don’t have any moral objection if people would rather write fluff in which Faith and Buffy have an awkward first kiss at the Homecoming Dance, or AUs in which Faith never sides with the Mayor, or post-canon fic which takes for granted the fact that Faith is now redeemed and happily devoted to Buffy (it would make me a bit of a hypocrite if I did, since I’ve written all of these things).

But the sort of Fuffy writing and meta that I most enjoy, even if it doesn’t dwell on Faith’s worst moments or if it takes place in a continuity where they conveniently haven’t happened, always treats Faith as somebody who could do those things, if the circumstances were just a little bit different.  Always recognizes her as somebody who does have a lot of barely-suppressed anger in her, who is more likely to listen to an authority figure who tells her what she wants to hear than one who doesn’t, who is more than a little bit jealous of Buffy’s life, who does think, deep down, that being a Slayer makes her better than other people.

To me, that’s the appeal of Faith as a character and also of her relationship with Buffy. The two things are kind of inseparable.  Faith is a reflection of a lot of Buffy’s own worst impulses; she’s somebody that Buffy could have been if things had turned out differently (and if Buffy hadn’t had a certain inner strength and self-belief that Faith, for all her posturing, doesn’t quite ever have herself).  She’s the Buffy we’ll see hints of throughout Season 6, the Buffy we saw in Season 2’s When She Was Bad, the Buffy we see in Season 3’s The Wish. And, as a reflection of Buffy, she has some of Buffy’s strengths as well as exaggerated versions of some of Buffy’s flaws.  She’s not uncomplicatedly Evil, even at her worst, but she does a lot of things that are very hard to forgive, and she enjoys doing some of them more than some people like to admit.

I think if somebody’s going to try to write Fuffy, and get both Buffy and Faith right, that’s something they need to remember.  Let Faith have some jagged edges.  Let her be a little bit dangerous.  Let her be a little bit cruel. Let her be a little bit self-destructive.  Put simply: let her be Faith.

🔥 Archie Sonic

The amount of praise this adaptation gets does not line up with what a mess it was for most of its duration, and how it frequently suffered from terrible arcs and haphazard characterizations. Even post-reboot was ultimately just kind of meh on the whole. IDW turning out to be little more than Archie 2: The Return of Jafar has only solidified this opinion.

For more character/story-specific opinions:

Most of the Archie-exclusive characters are very forgettable.

The Freedom Fighters are overrated.

Scourge is a crappy villain and fails as a dark mirror of Sonic.

Fiona was an idiot for flocking to Scourge despite it contradicting her prior backstory and motives.

House of Cards does not good drama make.

The Unleashed arc suffered from being a bloated mess and constantly distracting itself with mundane nonsense.

Worlds Collide was alright, but Worlds Unite was... well, it sure was the Archie of all time, that's for sure. I loved it when Xander said "It's Xanding time" and Xandered all over those guys.

AU or no AU, the King Shadow storyline was a complete bastardization of Shadow's character.

I was okay with some of them initially, but over time, I grew to see the Egg Bosses as wastes. All of them. Some of them were annoying (Thunderbolt), some of them ended looking stupid in spite of their intended tragedy (Clove), and all of them didn't really have anything unique to offer aside from using Eggman's own mechs, thereby making the doctor feel less unique. Aside from one or two organic minions, Eggman generally prefers his workforce to be entirely robots anyway.

Ken Penders' hijinks may have been the obvious problem with most of Archie's run, but that doesn't mean he was the only one.

After seeing the Archie/SatAM fandom have a meltdown over Sally no longer being nude post-reboot, I never want to hear anyone complain about Rouge's design ever again.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER

Season 1

Started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and minus the quality of videos, I am really enjoying it. Have to push past some cliche scenes but oh well, it was 1999 so it's not really that cliche.

Anyway, here's my opinion on Season 1 after finishing.

Buffy is my girl. Like Damn woman, get them all. You look hot doing it.

Angel is hot, wish he was more in the show. His entrance scene was damn 🔥. Wish we had more of his scenes. I don't really have much of an opinion of him as we saw too little of him. Still, trust him, loner, brooding, mysterious and he needs to stop disappearing. Reminds me of stefan(my man). His past is gonna be interesting.

Buffy and Angel have got chemistry. No questions there. There first kiss... God damn🤤. I felt things man. It has to be the superior ship and we'll see(although I know how it ends though) .

Xander is okay, he's funny and a good side character. I don't have much of an opinion on him.

I love willow, she's funny and a geek and I tend to have a thing for funny, smart, beautiful but don't know it, kind of woman(I am not bi yet lol). Looking forward to what they do with her character and to get into her life.

Xander and willow, I mean it's gonna happen at least once, although I don't think they're the end game. They have a good platonic chemistry though and I love their friendship.

I love the watcher(giles). What an awkward mess.

Love the buffy × willow × xander trio. Excited to watch it.

I can't stand cordelia and I am gonna go ahead and predict it's not gonna happen for me lol. I know most people love her and she's iconic in some way(not sure) but I can't deal with her. She's just not for me. I am just so over the whole mean girl who everyone loves for some reason but she's just a really nasty bully and I know that she's never gonna have any consequences. I hate characters like her.

Let's see... What else, love the plot lines, they're decent and we have a good start here and I've a feeling it's gonna get much better from here.

Overall a fairly good start, decent plot lines, love the characters so far(minus cordelia).

Did I mention I can't stand cordelia.

Anyway, maybe I missed something but that's the gist of it.

On to season 2. Will be live (not really live) posting as I watch.

omg buffy or angel... well i consumed at least half of angel s4 on wikia so

anyway buffy season 4! not my favourite of all the seasons but i like her... she's fun! buffy is in college! my friend goes to ucla so when watching the first few eps i would send screenshots to see if they could identify locations that was fun for me (severely annoying on twt to an audience of zero people while first watching buffy). she gave us relatable post-high school transition where you start to drift from your friends and feel confused but are really truly just vibing... all my closest friends are people i knew in high school so i liked that aspect. that one scooby hug. i feel that using giles's apartment as the scooby base rly encapsulates this bc as a place it is like the perfect transition btwn school library and magic box where they are in s5/6... she gave us tara and lesbian willow. she gave us recurring character anya. she gave us spike at his most pathetic <3 spike and giles as roommates and spike and xander as roommates... moments in history.

i do wish that they had kept maggie walsh for longer and committed more heavily to like condemning the military rather than having maggie killed off and just like giving riley a minor crisis about it in goodbye iowa? idk like the initiative is bad but i think they should have gone harder on the questionable ethics, beyond oz getting taken + maggie going off and creating adam. like i think that adam should have turned on maggie later on, this might also help to better explore the riley / buffy / adam as soldiers idea which of course buffy does subvert at the end by being a slayer with friends. and riley kinda sorta breaks free. but yes adam could still try to instigate the demons vs humans thing because maggie wants to create more of him from the destruction, then have him turn on maggie later down the line and idk still have to be defeated for xyz reasons, maybe he kills maggie because he is sick of being a War Machine but still wants to go ahead with the plan/doesn't know anything different. or something. i haven't thought this through i was just a bit annoyed at the time. also i mostly do not think about riley ever tbh but he is kinda cute for me to look at like as a lesbian. it's funny whenever riley and buffy give strong comphet vibes.

anyway again i like that nothing awful happens to buffy and there are a lot of solid episodes and nice moments... fear itself, freshman, harsh light of day, hush, something blue, a new man all come to mind immediately as fun times. "i'm nice to meet" "capricorn on the cusp of aquarius" "well, you were myth-taken" "you're gonna get heartburn" SO true. "or someone formerly dangerous and currently annoying <3" this year's girl/who are you get its own mention for epic faith moments... but yeah i appreciate the more slice-of-life vibe as the gang start to find themselves outside the confines of high school and i'm actually kinda sad that they dropped the college setting as much as i love s5. mostly sad that buffy had to drop out :( to conclude s4 is my good friend 🤝

🔥 for an unpopular Buffy opinion please!

Okay, I actually posted about this a couple of days ago when I was feeling particularly irritable, but I still really cannot get behind the popular fandom idea that Giles is somehow the Scooby Gang’s collective parent.  It is just not based on anything in the show. Or, rather, to the extent that it is based on the show it conflates things that are true about Buffy with things that are true about Buffy’s friends more generally.  It feels incredibly reductive to assume you can flatten any positive relationship between adults and teenagers – in a high school, no less! – to “he’s their Dad!”.  More importantly than that, it is boring.

Is Giles on some metaphorical level Buffy’s father?  Sure.  This is pretty much textual (especially between seasons 3 and 5, when the show really starts to play up how terrible Hank Summers is).  “You have a father’s love for the child” and so on and so forth.

And yes, Season 4 somewhat retcons Xander into wishing that this was the sort of relationship he had with Giles too, although I really don’t think that’s something present in the earlier seasons.  (It's not something I’ve noticed at all in my current rewatch, for example.)  But if this is something Xander wants, it’s very much one-sided and has far more to do with Xander’s poor relationship with his own awful and abusive parents than it does with Sunnydale’s resident ex-librarian.  Giles himself quite obviously doesn’t think of Xander as any sort of son.  He honestly doesn’t even seem to like him much.

But the others?  There’s just nothing there.  Yes, most of the Scoobies either have explicitly absent or neglectful parents or (like Oz) their parents are just weirdly not present or ever mentioned, but that doesn’t mean that we’re supposed to assume Giles fills a parent-shaped hole in their lives.  Anya certainly doesn’t treat Giles like a parent, and why should she when she’s lived almost a thousand years longer than he has?  Cordelia doesn’t seem to have any problem with her real father (at least until the tax fraud catches up with him).  Tara obviously has very real problems with her biological family, but I don’t think there’s ever any suggestion she sees Giles as a replacement for her father (or that she would want one?).

And while Willow’s relationship with her own parents is not always super-consistent (because, again, this is not the focus of the show) she doesn’t seem to ever have any particular problem with her father specifically. It’s her mother she sometimes seems to wish made more of an effort to understand her.  (Is Ira Rosenberg even mentioned in the show after Season 2?)  Moreover, Willow explicitly had a crush on Giles in high school (as evidenced by: (1) the photo of Giles in her locker in I Robot, You Jane; (2) the way she pointedly doesn’t raise her hand along with Buffy and Xander to signal their disgust when Faith calls Giles “young and cute” in Faith, Hope & Trick; (3) the fact that in Where The Wild Things Are she outright says she used to have a crush on him).  Giles is not Willow’s father.

Furthermore, to the extent that Giles is Buffy’s father he is -- despite his genuine affection for her -- canonically not very good at it!  “Better than Hank” is a pretty low bar, and he doesn’t even consistently manage that. There’s Season 6, of course, and Helpless before that, but even ignoring those episodes Giles is often dismissive of Buffy’s interests and instincts and seems to think he’s entitled to a pretty significant say in her day to day life and to a significant amount of her free time.  Beyond that, their relationship cannot help but be understood in the context that Giles’s role in life – the thing he has been trained for since he was a child himself – is literally to prepare Buffy to go and fight monsters alone in the dark and die young because of it. If that’s a parental relationship, it’s not exactly an enviable or healthy one.  

As I said in my previous answer about Cordelia, I like Giles.  He is sympathetic and funny and at times even compelling. I think his relationship with Buffy is an important part of the show.  But I just find the constant urge to flatten him into a Good Dad to be incredibly hard to relate to.  He is much more interesting than that.
