Is it a coincidence that the election night map on TVN24 in Poland used the colors of the Ukrainian flag to designate which party was ahead in each województwo (province)? 🙂🇺🇦🇵🇱

In any case, here are the final results from the official election authority the Państwowa Komisja Wyborcza.

The official results in the number of seats per party were amazingly close to the exit polls. While the specific number of seats per party differed slightly, the Sunday night Ipsos poll and these official results both give the three pro-democracy parties a total of 248 seats.

The official turnout (74.38%) was more than a percentage point higher than the already high exit poll estimate. This is the highest turnout since the 1989 election which saw the end of communism in Poland.

When you vote, you win.

People who have lived under authoritarianism don't need to be prodded into voting.

Tim Mak is an American journalist in Ukraine. He tells about Marcin Banasiak, a Polish citizen who is doing humanitarian work in Eastern Ukraine. Long story short: Just to vote in Sunday's election, Marcin spent 26 hours traveling from Kharkiv to Warsaw. That required traveling almost the entire length of Ukraine and then over to Warsaw via the border city of Chełm.

If Marcin can spend 26 hours (traveling one way) to help rescue democracy in Poland, we should not complain about the minor inconveniences related to voting in the US.

American historian and journalist Anne Applebaum lives in Poland with her husband Radek Sikorski who happens to be an MEP and former cabinet member in the previous Donald Tusk government. In The Atlantic (archived) on Monday she wrote about what led to the pro-democracy victory at the polls.

[A]bout 73 percent of Poles voted across the country, far more than the number that voted in 1989, and in some places the turnout was higher than 80 percent. In Warsaw, Gdansk, Lublin, and Wroclaw, as well as some European cities, voters stood in line for many hours, polling stations ran out of ballots, and some people were able to vote only long after the polls had been scheduled to close. At one Warsaw polling station near midnight, an election worker wept on live television, thanking her compatriots for showing up in such large numbers. How did they do it? Anger is a powerful emotion, and over the past year, PiS made a lot of people angry. Repeated PiS corruption scandals—corruption being one of the inevitable results of politicized judges, police, and prosecutors—certainly helped the opposition. So did high inflation, partly created by PiS’s decision to spend heavily on social programs as the election approached. So did the decision by PKN Orlen, a state-owned oil company, to lower gasoline prices in advance of the vote, thereby causing shortages around the country, as well as general mockery. But this turnout was produced by positive emotions too. Donald Tusk, the leader of the Civic Coalition, pointedly used the language of civic patriotism rather than angry nationalism. Thousands of volunteers came together to organize election-monitoring teams. Hundreds of thousands of people marched in two major demonstrations in Warsaw, carrying Polish and European Union flags; others joined a series of big public meetings around the country.

The new government, when it assumes office, won't be perfect – because no humans are perfect. But it will be enormously better. And similar to Democrats in the US after Trump, the presumed three-party coalition in Poland will spend a lot of time repairing democratic institutions degraded by PiS.

I've just read an article (in Gazeta Wyborcza) about a very popular series of books among young teens in my country, Poland, called "Rodzina Monet" (Family Monet). The author gained popularity while publishing on Wattpad lol. The article basically said that it's problematic because these books are read by young girls, even 10 years old, and it glorifies violence. Plus it just isn't well written - there were some fragments in the article and yeah it's not well written lmao. A woman in the comments said that her daughter is reading this book and asked if she should forbid it. Since no one answered her, I replied that I don't think forbidding the book is a good solution and suggested talking to her daughter about it, showing her the article and asking what she thinks about it. But I don't know anything more about that situation, for example how old the daughter is. I don't think I'd worry if my child were to read this book, I read trashy stuff too. But I started wondering if maybe there should be some control in such a case? The thing with the books from what I gathered (I haven't read them) is that they are about a 14yo girl, who suddenly lost her mother and grandmother, is sent away to US from Britain where she starts living with her 28yo (handsome) stepbrother and his 3 (also handsome) brothers. She lives in a beautiful villa since the stepbrother is super rich. He's also cold and distant and doesn't understand that she has issues with food (she has some kind of eating disorder). Some of the things he and his 3 brothers do can be described as domestic violence but they apologize, buy her expensive stuff and are all adult handsome men. Yeah it's a young adult fiction. The thing is that it's just not well written so none of the bad behaviours is commented upon.

Sounds like typical godawful id trash that people eat up. Making a rule against it will just make it more tantalizing.

It would be far more valuable to kick any worthless partners out of one's life and demonstrate not putting up with shit to a tween girl than to ban her from reading trashy books.

One could always try buying her something better, but IME, people who try that always do it wrong: they buy books that are better written, yes, but the vocabulary and sentence structure are a thousand times harder, there's zero iddy wish fulfillment, and the plot is something fucking depressing and supposedly edifying.

Readers can smell a tryhard "your taste is bad" gift a mile away.

I think it's also important when trying to find replacement trash to understand what the kink actually is. Why is it age gap? Well, have you seen 14-year-olds? They're awkward and covered in zits. Of course the protagonist is young like the readers and the hotties are older.

More importantly, why is it abusive? Absolute idiots will be like "Because society taught girls wah wah wah wah wah", but the actual reason is obvious if you've read trash romance for adults:

It's so the love interest(s) can be in the wrong.

The self inserty protagonist of this type of story has very little power. Not only is she usually younger, but she's poorer, a fish out of water in a new situation, etc. The way she gets power is by the love interest doing something absolutely horrible, realizing they have erred, and then groveling forever. Their guilt is an effective way to manipulate them. And yes, retail therapy is usually the next step from this particular trash classic all the way back to The Flame and the Flower.

You can try giving a teen girl a book about a teen girl action hero who is awesome and whose love interest likes her because of that... But if the reader doesn't feel awesome, she's still going to prefer a book about a loser with a destined, fated love or a misunderstood woobie whom other characters have to grovel to after not initially realizing she was special.

You can't fix self esteem by handing someone a book they don't identify with and telling them their id is wrong. And if self esteem does improve, that doesn't mean the lizard brain is going to switch trash fiction tastes anyway.

One can try leaving other fun books around, but that's about the most that could be helpful.

"This war bores everyone, doesn't it?

I'm not bored, because I'm convinced that if we're bored with war today, we'll will have it at home in a few years' time. There are many signs of this, even President Biden says so - if Ukraine falls, the NATO countries will be next. Poland, on the other hand, is not a country on the eastern flank, as is sometimes said, Poland is a NATO front country. Therefore, I am convinced that we should support Ukraine's armed forces in our own interests too. I will continue to do so in the future as best I can.

As some of you may know, at the beginning of this year I organized a fundraiser to which you contributed more than 150 000 EUR zlotys: With this I bought 4x4 vehicles that I prepared for the conditions on the front, bought drones, including a Matrice with a thermal imaging camera for more than 20 000 EUR, bought rifle accessories, night vision devices, scopes, generators and many other things which, thanks to the indispensable Monika Andruszewska, I personally brought to the front, to the trenches and into the hands of the soldiers fighting against Russia.

I was at the front three times in Ukraine. I wrote two essays about this experience, which were published in Polish in Gazeta Wyborcza, in German in Neue Zuercher Zeitung and (one of them) in English in The Point. Links in the comments.

So everyone is bored with this war. But I think of my buddies I've met in this war and they can't be bored with the war. So I recently asked one of them, Dima from the Marine infantry, who is in the south right now, on the banks of the Dnieper, what they need.

"What do we need? Man, FPV drones and REBs. That's the most important thing right now," replied Dima.

"Look. A mortar shell costs about one thousand euros. An FPV drone costs between five hundred and one thousand euros. To hit something with a mortar, we have to fucking fire ten grenades. And an FPV drone only needs one. Do you understand what the difference is?

FPV drones are weapons that are as improvised as they are deadly. They are created mostly from Chinese components and assembled by volunteers, specialized companies or units themselves. Their sole purpose is destruction - the entire design is subordinate to this purpose. On the back of the drone are the battery and antennas of the video transmitter (which usually uses an analog rather than digital signal that is more resistant to jamming), underneath are the quadrocopter's propellers and motors, and on the belly is the payload - a bazooka warhead, a mortar shell or something else. All of this is held in place by zipties. 

The pilot usually works with a navigator and a second team flying an observation drone to get a wider view. The drones have a range of about fifteen kilometers, depending on the size of the payload. Their advantage over commercial drones, which cost at least three thousands eruos and from which small shells are dropped, is the weight of the explosive charge or the effectiveness and, above all, the price. The ZSU loses thousands of drones every month - an FPV drone is six times cheaper and much more effective than a Mavik or Matrice with a grenade. Their mere presence on the front line changes the whole situation:

"With an FPV drone I can easily fuck up their tank, a IFV, cars and pick-ups, even while they are on the move, which is rather impossible with a mortar", Dima told me. "For this reason, Russians has to keep its machines at a distance, with tanks they shoot from afar, but they are afraid to drive up, because everything we notice can be destroyed. They keep everything at least ten kilometers away from the null. The topic of FPV has been around for a year or a year and a half, but now we have the problem that Rustia has more of it than we do. So you can understand it yourself. The whole machinery of the empire is working with them for this, the Chinese are helping them, you know?

Every war has its swords, it also has its shields.

Shields against drones are jammers. The Ukrainian soldiers, like the Russians, call them REBs - РЕБ, stands for "Радіоелектронна боротьба", radio-electronic warfare.

"There are many types of REBs. The Russkies have great radio-electronic warfare systems, and in this field they have an advantage over not only us, but over everybody else," Dima continued to explain to me in a signaled voice. "Their jammers are such big machines, with a big antenna that are easy to identify, and we have destroyed many of them for them. That's why they use such smaller ones now, they call them "trenchers', and they drown out everything, right? All communication channels. And the antenna is barely visible. Well, and now we need some that can be mounted on cars, and for us, in the naval infantry, also on the boats that we sail across the Dnieper. We, the pilots, are on the right bank and our infantry on the left. For them, the entire supply goes by boat, and you can't hide on the water. Without an REB, as you understand, such a boat is doomed."

But REBs can't be just any kind. In one airborne brigade I know, the guys were sitting in positions a few hundred meters from the borders of Bakhmut, of which they were among the last defenders. The whole platoon share the cost with their own, private money and bought the cheapest REB, because the Russians were attacking them from the ruins of the burnt city with whole waves of FPV. For three days after the purchase, they rejoiced at the sight of Russian drones dropping far in front of their positions, drowned out by the REBs, without harming the boys. On the fourth day, the Russkies changed their frequency and a drone flew directly into their trench.

This terrible war will end successfully if we get bored, not with us, but with the Russians. That's why I want to help my Ukrainian friends to make it a bit more unpleasant for the Russians.

That's why I'm appealing to your generosity once again: donate, please. I will use everything I can raise to buy FPV drones and REBs from trustworthy and military-proven suppliers. Then I'll put everything in a car and, together with Monika Andrushevskaya, personally take it straight to the trenches, to the units we've already helped, namely

- 72nd Mechanized Brigade, where I spent most of my time,

- the 77th Airborne Brigade, where a company is commanded by my colleague Dzhura, whom you've already met if you check my social media from time to time

- to the naval infantry in Kherson,

- to the special forces, to Omega and other SSOs of the ZSU."
