BRE House, Thursday

"Alright, let's go again," Shayna says, pulling Dakota up from the floor. Both girls are sweating, having been working at home in the gym for hours. It's Thursday afternoon, and all of Dakota’s energy is focused on preparing for NXT Takeover: XXX in Boston on Saturday. She finally has an opportunity to challenge Io Shirai for the NXT Women's Championship Title, and Shayna is helping her prepare. Even though Shayna is now on Raw, she still tries to go with Dakota, Jessamyn, and Marina to NXT events whenever she can.

Dakota sighs, pulling herself up from the ground. "I still don't know why you're helping me," she says. "It's not like I really have a chance at beating her."

"Well not with that attitude you don't," Shayna says. "Now come on, let's work on countering the double wristlock again." They work on the double wristlock. And the rear naked choke. And the vertical suplex. And then Shayna decides to work on the armbar with Dakota, and that's when things start to go downhill.

Shayna can practically see Dakota’s brain working overtime, trying to figure out how to do the submission. After 20 minutes of unsuccessful attempts, Dakota snaps. "This is pointless, I’m never going to be ready!" she says, tears welling up in her eyes.

She turns to leave the gym, and Shayna puts a hand on her shoulder to stop her. "Stop, stop… alright. Looking back on what you’ve just done, what do you think I’m going to say?"

"I don't know, Shayna!" Dakota snaps, and then immediately regrets it. "Sorry," she says quietly, looking down at the ground. "I didn't mean to yell at you."

"I know you didn't," Shayna says, trying to reassure the pink-haired girl. She sits down on the mat and pats the ground next to her, inviting Dakota to sit down with her. "Look, I know you're frustrated. And I know you're nervous about Saturday. But giving up isn't going to help you, Dakota. You've just gotta keep putting in the work." Dakota is silent, and Shayna can tell she's thinking about something. "Hey, what's going on in that brain of yours?" Shayna asks gently.

Dakota sighs, looking down at the mat again. "I just don't want to let you down," she says quietly.

Shayna feels her heart break a little at those words. "Kota, you could never let me down," she says. "You've come so far, and I've seen you grow so much. So no matter what happens on Saturday, you won't be letting me down. I'm just happy to see you finally getting the opportunity you deserve."

Dakota looks up at Shayna with a shy smile. "Really?" she asks, not quite believing the words she's hearing.

"Really," Shayna says, giving Dakota’s hand a squeeze.

They sit in silence for a moment longer, before Dakota speaks up again. "So, what were you going to tell me?" she asks.

Shayna smiles. "I was going to tell you that you know how to do the armbar. You just need to get out of your own head." she says. As they start working it again, Dakota pauses as she's about to go for the armbar, and Shayna uses that opportunity to flip their positions for what would have been a pinfall victory. She shakes her head at Dakota, resetting their positions. "You’re overthinking it. Don’t think. Just be in the moment," she says.

"Easier said than done," Dakota mutters under her breath. But this time when she goes for it, Shayna can tell that she's not thinking. She's just moving, and when she cranks Shayna's arm back, Dakota is smiling more than Shayna has ever seen her before. "How was that?" she asks.

"That was perfect," Shayna says. "Now let's do it again." They work the armbar for another hour, and with each attempt, Dakota gets more confident. When they finally decide to call it a day, Shayna presses a kiss to the top of Dakota’s head. "You did a good job today," she says.

"Thanks," Dakota says, shyly. "I feel better about Saturday now."

Shayna gives her a hug. "My girlfriend is about to become the new NXT women's champion," she says.

"Okay, I haven't won the title yet," Dakota says, but she's smiling.

"Win or lose, you'll always be my champion," Shayna says, and Dakota feels like maybe, she just might be able to pull this off.

NXT Takeover: XXX, Saturday

"How are you feeling?" Shayna asks, watching as Dakota gets ready for her match, slowly transforming herself into the incredibly talented wrestler who Shayna knows is about to become champion.

Dakota turns to Shayna. "I mean, I'm nervous," she admits. "But I know I'm as prepared as I can be."

Shayna gives her shoulder a quick squeeze. "You got this," she says. "Just trust yourself. Don't think, just act. You know what to do."

Dakota takes a deep breath. "Thanks," she says.

A backstage staff member pokes her head into the locker room. "Dakota, you're on deck," she says.

"I'll see you after your match," Shayna says, giving Dakota a quick kiss before leaving the locker room and joining Jessamyn and Marina where they're seated in the front row of the stadium.

Dakota takes one last quick look at her reflection before making her way backstage to where Tegan Nox is waiting for her. "You ready?" Tegan asks, and Dakota nods. She knows Tegan won't interfere, because that's just not how they do things. But she's thankful to have her best friend by her side tonight. Even just her being there helps to ease some of her nerves.

As soon as she hears the opening chords of her music, she feels her heart beat a little faster. She steps out into the arena, and the crowd roars. She gives herself 10 seconds to soak it in, before nodding to Tegan as they make their way to the ring. As she walks down the ramp, she blocks out the crowd, the music, everything that could distract her from her goal tonight. She refuses to let herself be intimidated by Io's entrance. She just stares straight ahead as the champion enters the ring.

The official raises the belt, before handing it off to another official. Then the bell rings, and it's less than a second before Dakota kicks Io in the stomach, sending her stumbling backwards. She's not letting Io make the first move.

No one expected this match to last long. Everyone thought it would be a quick victory for Io. Well, everyone except for Shayna, that is, who currently has her eyes glued to the match. She's not saying anything, just watching intently, and Jessamyn and Marina have to keep reminding her to breathe.

The match is back and forth for a good 15 minutes, and it's becoming clear that Dakota could actually win this. She just needs an opportunity to finish it. And then finally, she gets it. Io comes flying down from the top turnbuckle, attempting to put Dakota away with a moonsault. At the last second, Dakota rolls out of the way and Io comes crashing down hard onto the canvas. Dakota sees the opening, Io's landing having given her the exact position she needs. In a split-second, she's on top of Io and grabbing onto her arm.

She doesn't think, just leans back and cranks the arm.

Io taps. The bell rings. The official shakes her shoulder, tells her it's over. Dakota lets Io go, gets to her feet. The official hands Dakota the belt, raises her hand in the air.

"Here is your winner, and the new NXT women's champion, Dakota Kai!" the ring announcer says.

Or at least that's what Dakota thinks is being said. But she's not sure, because suddenly she's being grabbed from behind and all she can hear is Shayna screaming in her ear. "You did it!" she yells, hugging Dakota tightly. Dakota laughs, squirming out of Shayna's arms so she can give her an actual hug, and Shayna picks her up and spins her around.

When she's back on her feet, Dakota is immediately tackled into a hug from Tegan. "Nice job champ," her friend says, giving her a high five.

"Thanks," Dakota says, grinning. She turns to Io, who is finally up from the ground, and holds out her hand. "Great match," she says. And she can't understand what Io says in response, but based on the smile and the handshake, she assumes it's nothing bad.

"She says the same," Shayna translates, having picked up a little Japanese from the time that she had spent wrestling there. They're given the cue that they've switched to commercial break before the next match, and they leave the ring and head backstage where Dakota is immediately pulled aside for an interview.

After she's done with her interview and takes some pictures, Dakota heads back to the locker room to shower and change. When she returns to her locker with her hair wet and wearing black leggings and a camouflage cropped hoodie, she's surprised to find that Shayna is there, waiting for her. "What are you doing in here?" Dakota asks.

"I was waiting for you," Shayna says, as if it's the most obvious thing in the world.

"Don't you want to see the main event?" Dakota asks.

Shayna shrugs. "Nah, I'd rather see you," she says, and Dakota blushes.

Dakota pulls Shayna into a hug. "Thank you," she says. "I wouldn't have been able to do it without you."

Shayna smiles at her girlfriend. "I told you it would happen," she says, nodding at the belt sitting next to Dakota's bag. She wraps an arm around Dakota's shoulders and pulls her close to her side. "I'm so proud of you," Shayna says softly. "And I hope you're proud of yourself too."

Dakota turns to face Shayna. "I love you Shay," she says.

"I love you too Kota," Shayna replies. She leans in and kisses her girlfriend, and for a moment it's silent, the two of them enjoying the moment. Until they hear the handle of the locker room door twisting and they spring apart quickly. Their relationship isn't secret, but they both value their privacy.

Jessamyn pokes her head into the locker room, with Marina not far behind her. "Figured I'd find you two in here," Jess says with a smirk.

"Shut up," Shayna says, but she's laughing.

"Come on lovebirds, we're going out to celebrate." Marina says.

Shayna turns to Dakota. "You ready?" she asks.

"Ready," Dakota says, grabbing her gear bag. She looks down at the belt in her hands one more time, and reminds herself that she finally did it. After years of working for it, she can finally call herself a champion.
