If you find yourself telling people that they aren’t allowed to hate a character who canonically abused a child under their care—physically, verbally, and emotionally—because that parental figure is family and it is wrong to hate family, then here’s a suggestion: DON’T.

Seriously, wtf. That sort of attitude does so much harm. My dad was horribly abusive to me, and my mom spent years telling me not to be mad at him, because he was family, and you have to forgive and love family. And, surprising absolutely no one, I continued to be abused during the years I kept him in my life because I tried to follow my mom’s terrible advice. It was only after cutting him out of my life and holding him responsible for the torture he inflicted on me that I could start to heal.

Please note I am not saying that the person who essentially posted in an author’s note that it is wrong to hate a character for abusing a family member is a bad person, or that they need to be named and shamed. Nor am I saying that a canonically abusive character needs to be universally hated: redemption arc fics and AUs where they weren’t as abusive are fine! Creative license is a thing!

But, for the sake of child abuse survivors who might read fics, please, please do NOT tell readers that it’s wrong to hate family members who abused you.

Could you imagine the actual Holy Spirit having a clear and direct sentient influence in your child's life?
