Finished watching the entire series of House yesterday. It is another one of those 'man is a fucking massive fuck-off jerk but for some insane reason we condone him' shows. Seriously. The whole 'Man is a genius therefore we give him a pass for being a shitty human being' schtick has been done for centuries now, if not longer. It's even worse because you can watch House and literally see why rapists, etc. are treated lightly in reality with the whole two yards of 'But we can't take away his future! But he was a bright college student!' because every other reviewer somehow chooses to give House a pass on non-stop sexual harassment + racist comments + all that other 'good stuff'. But! Loads of reviewers etc. tout House as a groundbreaking TV show. Groundbreaking how...? It broke with other medical dramas at the time I suppose (I haven't watched any other med dramas besides Scrubs) in the sense that it riffed off Sherlock Holmes? There's a Case-of-the-Week. The protagonist is a 'tortured genius'. Uhm. Maybe at the time that was groundbreaking, but. I'm happy I watched it because I wanted to know what all the 'House was a great TV show' was all about, and because I have never watched any TV show with Hugh Laurie in it before, and because I wanted to have seen another med drama besides Scrubs, but the incessant 'House' comments in every way just - We were less 'PC' (as in politically correct) back then, so it's fine..? Or something? It just seems like another one of those reasons to gratify and give ground to people who want to imagine that you can get a pass on anything if you're a white man who happens to be good at something. For the record, you can be an awful person and still polite. See: Hannibal. Tortured? Yeah, maybe. Genius? Yeah. Do we know that he is through-and-through an awful person? Yeah, we do. He sees people as pigs? Yeah, he even eats them. But does he treat anyone like shit? No. The writing isn't great. The character development isn't great. In an 8-season run there have been literally only a handful of episodes centred on characters that are not House. Cuddy doesn't get an episode of her own until season 6 or 7? Chase doesn't get an episode centering on him till literally the back-end of the final season. Does Cameron get an episode of her own at all? And then almost every 'attractive' female character that comes on the show seems to for some insane reason 'fall in love with House' or 'admire House' or something. There are also literally zero healthy relationships on this show. The characters justify ridiculous and toxic actions all the time to each other. Invading each other's privacy under the guise of 'well-meaning'. Ignoring boundaries. Etc. etc.. Nothing ever changes. Arcs are never really satisfactorily concluded, and narrative cohesion is weak. As soon as House loses his team at the end of season 3 it just goes on carousel and returning to status quo over and over, with a few minor changes. House doesn't have a progression. The show itself seems to believe that House needs to make himself miserable or he won't be House. The only thing it gets right is that the people around him slowly become more and more like House. There are some redeeming factors, like Wilson's snarking - brilliant comedy honestly I really like Robert Sean Leonard - but besides that I really can't think of anything else. Oh, and Jesse Spencer is very pretty. At the end of everything none of the characters have changed. Cameron is still a sap. Chase suddenly literally out of nowhere takes on a leadership role but we don't get to see any of that afterwards because oop, the show's ended, it's not about House any more so what's the point. Nothing about Foreman's transition to being Dean of Medicine or how he's handling or even liking the duties that come with his new job title. Wilson still lets House do utterly ridiculous things and never stays mad for longer than maybe two episodes, usually much shorter than that. Thirteen is abruptly fired and then we never see her again except when she becomes handy, even though she's supposedly on Mykonos with her girlfriend, just comes back whenever anyone needs her. Again. What happened with Taub's ex-wife moving to Portland again? He said he wouldn't have it and her new boyfriend and her just asquiesced? Then that's it. The end. The rest of watching House was just me going 'Oh no' in a groan. Predictable missteps and mistakes both, on all fronts. I can see why it's 'supposed to be' groundbreaking. Again, yeah maybe at the time.

Only 3 dates. Not really a complaint just wish there was more.

Can’t do tweaked version of the third date activities as friends = unfortunate, guess I’ll just have to headcanon that a lot of it happens anyway.

Would like to see more interactions between the other dads and their kids.

Would like to see the dads react a little differently if you date all of them.

What even are some of these minigames? Is it actually possibly to fail on Robert’s second date or succeed on Mat’s third?

Kinda wish there was a map/guide or something for what takes place during the day or at night, and what is initiated by someone other than the PC, for smoother roleplaying/storybuilding, or that dates initiated by someone else would just happen organically as the plot progresses.

How does the dadsona have money? What do they do?? Are they just independently wealthy or something? Except Amanda’s college might be hard to pay for .... how do they pay for anything....

Can’t date Brian even though I think he’s cool because the competition thing and the pile of pointless lies is very much not my thing and not being able to be truthful or chill on the betting is annoying.

Joseph is creepy.

I have no desire to date the still-married youth pastor who apparently has time for everyone else’s kids but no time for his wife and no idea what his own kids are doing, and I have only done it to get the additional jokes and canon knowledge (only the first one was worth it for me). 

Why is he even a dating option.

Have to go on at least one date with everyone to further Amanda’s plot. Why this. 

Can’t tell Joseph to be a better person.
