Villainous: Reform School Chapter 35
Out of an overabundance of caution, 505 picked Melanie up and put him on his shoulders as they waded into the waist deep water.
“You know I can swim, right?” Melanie said. “You don’t have to carry me on your shoulders. I wouldn’t want to hurt your shoulders.”
505 shook his head to show that it was no problem for him.
Melanie relented, shrugged her shoulders, and let herself look around, enjoying the view of the ocean.
The ocean was perfect that day, not too rough or too smooth. 505 took the brunt of what little waves there were and enjoyed every minute of it.
Melanie watched the waves around her peacefully, watching the birds, the waves, and an animal bob its head out of the water from about 50 feet away. Wait, what?
Melanie looked over in the direction of the animal, and the creature poked its head out of the water and disappeared again. It was a seal. A familiar-looking reddish-brown seal.
What? Melanie thought to herself. No, it can’t be. There was no way.
Then suddenly, Melanie heard a telepathic, Irish accented voice in her head saying, “Melanie! It’s me, Sadie!”
Melanie felt her heart drop and her eyes grow wide in horror as she saw her friend in seal form poke her head out of the water from about 30 feet away.
Without a word or a second to think, Melanie summoned her wings, flew over in the direction of the seal, and hoped no one would notice.
505 watched Melanie fly away in confusion and tried calling out to her, but when she didn’t respond, he just walked back to shore.
Meanwhile, Flug was pulling on Demencia’s leash to hold her back while the pregnant couple dashed away as quickly as they could.
“Demencia, for the last time, I told you to stop!” Flug snapped.
Demencia responded with a malicious giggle and pulled even harder.
The tug-of-war continued until Flug noticed 505 without Melanie.
Flug let go of Demencia’s leash, causing her to faceplant in the sand, as he raised a brow and asked 505, “505, where is Melanie?”
505 scratched his head and pointed out into the ocean where Melanie was flapping her wings and looking around.
Back over the water, Melanie looked around nervously hoping to spot her friend.
“Sadie?” Melanie cried quietly. “Sadie, where are you?”
“I’m right here,” Sadie said telepathically as she finally let herself be seen. “I have swum for miles, and I’m here to help you! Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, Melanie! How did you get away from Black Hat?”
“I didn’t,” Melanie replied, gesturing to her foot and then to shore. “I’m being tracked every second. His servants, the mad scientist, the lizard lady, and the sentient bear are watching me right now. I’m only outside right now because the mad scientist wanted to make me feel better after a super sucky day. I’m not free…”
“Nothing to fear, dear friend,” Sadie interrupted telepathically with her characteristically sunny demeanor. “I can get that tracker off and get you out of here in no time!”
“You can’t!” Melanie cried. “Listen to me. You need to get out of here now. Black Hat wants to defeat the Nunjas and use me as bait to lure the Nunjas here. What do you think will happen if he finds you here? You need to return home…”
Back on shore, 505 continued staring out over the water and tilted his head curiously.
Flug put his hand over his goggles to help him see more clearly and asked, “What is she doing out there?”
Back out at sea, Sadie excitedly explained, “I can’t go home. All the sisters have gone on vacation to escape town till the Nunjas figure out what to do. Lucy has disappeared completely. No one knows where she is. My parents and I are on our yacht on a trip back to Ireland. I left a note while my parents were napping when we weren’t too far away from Black Hat Island. That’s how I came to be here with you. All the sisters were told to stay in hiding until the elder sisters had come up with a plan to save you. But when I found out that we were taking the boat, I simply couldn’t stay put. I was too worried. I had to make sure you were okay.”
“I’m fine, Sadie, but get back to the boat now please,” Melanie pleaded sternly. “I let Lucy’s identity slip out, and now, Black Hat plans to use me as bait to lure her here. If you get captured, Black Hat could use you as bait too. And if you refused, he’d torture you into complying and spilling more secrets. Even if you tried to be silent, my papi Lord Reaper is here. And between him and Black Hat, the two of them would find ways to make you talk. You need to go back to your boat right now.”
Sadie then noticed the back of Melanie’s neck.
Sadie swam around her, got a closer look before Melanie turned back around, and asked, “Melanie, how did you get that wound on your neck?”
“Yeah,” Melanie admitted quickly while looking around nervously. “The evil scientist and my ‘teacher’ Dr. Flug, he implanted a chip into my neck after I broke the tracker on my foot, and I got it out and hurt myself. So, the doctor patched me up. I thought I explained it in the group text.”
“I didn’t see it!” Sadie replied in a loud tone that almost made Melanie forget the voice was telepathic. “I have been swimming in the ocean for the better part of an hour. Oh, my God! They’re hurting you! There’s no time to waste! We’ve got to get you out of here now!”
“Sadie, I can’t leave!” Melanie cried quietly. “If I were to disappear now, Black Hat would use every resource he has to find me and you. I have this tracker on my foot. They’d find us. I can’t go back with you. How much clearer do I have to make that?”
“Then let me get it off! Then we can disappear together!” Sadie yelled before she jumped out of the water and tried to get her teeth on Melanie’s tracker before Melanie managed to fly out of the way.
The onlookers on the beach saw something jump out of the water at Melanie. Even Demencia had stopped what she was doing to watch.
505 yelped in concern and ran back to the water towards her, calling out to her to come back in.
Flug ran next to 505 to the edge of the water, waving his hands and yelling at the top of his lungs, “HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEY! GET BACK HERE!”
“Oh, merde,” Melanie muttered out loud as she looked back to shore before turning back to Sadie. “Sadie, they’ve seen you! You must go back now before they come out here to drag me back to shore! Please!”
“But I can get it off,” Sadie pleaded. “Then we can go escape successfully and you can make a triumphant return like the pirate queen Grace O’Malley when she returned to Ireland after her captivity.”
“Sadie, I tried getting a tracker like this off earlier with my scythe, bath water, and the fires of Hell,” Melanie pleaded back. “If that wasn’t enough to get it off, your teeth won’t be either! Please Sadie. I’ve learned the hard way that escaping from here and resisting Black Hat are not as simple as you think. We have to be smart about this, smarter than we’ve ever been about anything. With God’s, smart planning’s, yours, and the other Nunjas’ help, I’ll get out of here, but that won’t be possible if you’re in danger. Please. Just leave. I’ll make my triumphant return like Grace O’Malley another day, but for right now, I have to go back!”
Sadie’s seal eyes flashed in pain and sadness as she pleaded, “But Melanie…”
“MELANIE!” Flug yelled even louder before turning to Demencia and yelling, “Demencia, get her!”
With the flash of an evil smirk, Demencia jumped into the water and began swimming over to Melanie.
Sadie’s seal eyes grew wide with fear, and she asked sheepishly, “Who is that?”
“That is the psycho woman they hire out to kill heroes,” said Melanie, flashing frightened eyes of her own at her friend. “It’s me she’s after, not you. Now, go!”
“Okay,” Sadie said telepathically as she began swimming back the way she came. “Be brave, Melanie. This won’t be the last time we see each other in this world. One way or another, you’ll make your triumphant return. I’ll be sure to tell Lucy what I saw. Don’t give into those gobshites. Bye for now!”
Sadie then dove under the water and swam away.
Melanie flew towards the shore in a desperate attempt to get Demencia’s eyes off Sadie. She flew over the lizard woman swimming in the water with a mischievous smirk as she wracked her brains for a decent lie.
Before she turned around, Demencia looked under the water and noticed a seal swimming in the other direction.
Flug looked at Melanie with crossed arms as she flew back onto the shore and landed.
“What were you doing out there?!” Flug asked angrily as 505 put his hands around her shoulders.
“Nothing,” Melanie lied. “I was just staring at the sea creatures in the water.”
“Who goes out into the ocean to just stare at the water?” Flug asked skeptically. “There are no peaceful fish around Black Hat Island.”
“I was just thinking,” Melanie retorted annoyedly. “I haven’t been able to do that much today.”
“You were talking to the seal, weren’t you?!” Demencia yelled as she waded her way back to shore.
Melanie felt her stomach drop and shook nervously. 505 noticed and gave her a questioning glance.
“What are you talking about?” Melanie asked, shaking off her nerves and pretending to sound annoyed. “Seals aren’t native to this area.”
Flug walked over to Demencia who was shaking the salt water off as she stepped back onto the sand and asked, “A seal? Demencia, are you sure?”
“Yeah,” Demencia said, pointing back towards the water. “I saw a seal swimming away.”
“That is weird,” Flug said, gathering his thoughts.
Meanwhile, Melanie had walked over to her towel, taken a gulp of water, and pulled back on her shorts and shirt. She went about her business and refused to look at anyone for fear of betraying her friend. Melanie was so preoccupied that she forgot her sunglasses were still on and pulled her shirt over her head with them still over her eyes, causing them to fall onto the sand.
Unfortunately, Flug noticed Melanie’s clumsiness and her attempts to avoid eye contact.
Flug walked over to Melanie picking up and wiping off the sunglasses she had just dropped and asked, “Melanie, what are you trying to hide?”
“Nothing!” Melanie blurted out. “I just don’t feel like looking at your stupid faces anymore!”
“Melanie…” Flug pushed.
“Dios mio, do you have to be on my case about everything?!” Melanie snapped, finally looking at Flug with angry eyes. “I have ADHD. So, I like to stare in random directions to think sometimes. Am I not allowed to do that either? Just leave me alone!”
505 walked over to Melanie and put a hand on her shoulder. She looked at him, smiled, and held onto his paw. The bear gently led Melanie to the shore so that she could let the ocean wash over her feet while she took a moment to calm down.
Meanwhile, Flug walked up next to them and examined the ocean. He could spend a lot of time asking her questions and trying to interrogate her, but that would most likely go nowhere.
“For your sake, hope it’s just that,” Flug said.
Melanie shook nervously and allowed 505 to put his arm around her to give her a hug.
It was then that Melanie heard Sadie’s telepathic voice sing out from the sea in Irish Gaelic, “Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh!”
The voice then went silent as Melanie looked around to make sure that Sadie wasn’t nearby.
Flug noticed her behavior and came up with an idea.
“Well, I think it’s about time we get you fed and ready for bed,” Flug said. “It’s been a long day.”
“What?” Melanie asked, turning around to look at Flug incredulously. “The sun’s still up.”
“Yep, I think your grandfather was right,” Flug explained while 505 shyly walked away to prepare everything to go back up to the manor. “You need to rest. In fact, I think you should be confined to your room for the rest of the day.”
“Why?” asked Melanie annoyedly while 505 shook the sand out of the towels. “What’s the real reason you’re doing it?”
“To be completely honest, I need a break,” Flug said, folding his arms. “It’s been a long enough task babysitting you, and I still have other work to do, thank you very much. Besides, you seem tired.”
“Tired of your nonsense, maybe,” Melanie retorted.
505 finished packing everything into the beach bag, put Melanie’s knapsack on her back, and dropped her shoes in front of her in an effort to keep the peace.
“You are definitely tired,” Flug said while 505 nervously pushed Melanie into her shoes and whined to signal to her that she needed to calm down.
Unfortunately, 505’s efforts were fruitless.
“I am not tired, and I don’t need to be babysat!” Melanie retorted.
“See? You’re cranky,” Flug argued back. “Come on. Let’s get going. No complaining or your bedtime is at 8.”
“Wait, I thought you said my bedtime would be at 9,” Melanie replied.
“That’s it. Your bedtime’s at 8,” Flug said, with an exceptionally petty tone as he put his coat back on.
“What?” Melanie asked incredulously. “This isn’t fair! Why are you really doing this? What are you planning?!”
Flug rolled his eyes, picked up Demencia’s leash, and retorted, “To have some time away from you if I haven’t made that clear enough! Now, put on your shoes and let’s go!”
Melanie was about to reply when she heard Sadie’s singing again, “Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha ‘bhaile, Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh!”
Once again, no one else heard the voice but her.
505 gently put his arm around Melanie to usher her forward, but she didn’t budge and listened for more singing from Sadie.
“Bauw?” 505 asked when Melanie didn’t keep walking.
Flug turned around to see what Melanie was doing.
“You really want me to make it 7, don’t you?” Flug asked annoyedly.
Melanie began to hear the singing again by herself again. She panicked internally. How far was Sadie from shore if she could still hear her telepathic voice at this range?
Melanie glared back at Flug and replied, “If time away from me is really what you want, then fine! See you later!”
Melanie summoned her wings and flew off the ground into the air to see if she could see Sadie from the air and get some distance from her annoying warden.
All the while she could hear Sadie singing, “'Sé do bheatha, a bhean ba léanmhar, Do b' é ár gcreach thú bheith i ngéibheann, Do dhúiche bhreá i seilbh méirleach, Is tú díolta leis na Gallaibh! Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh!”
“NO!” Flug screamed in a panic. “Cover her, 505!”
Unfortunately, 505 didn’t understand the orders and stared at Flug in confusion while Melanie flew above him. Demencia broke away from Flug, climbed 505’s back, jumped up, and tried to grab Melanie’s legs, but Melanie flew away and avoided her arms.
Melanie flew higher and kept listening to Sadie’s singing while visually trying to see if she could find her, “Tá Gráinne Mhaol ag teacht thar sáile, Óglaigh armtha léi mar gharda, Gaeil iad féin is ní Frainc ná Spáinnigh, Is cuirfidh siad ruaig ar Ghallaibh! Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile, Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile, Anois ar theacht an tsamhraidh!”
On the ground, Flug panicked for a moment at neither 505 nor Demencia being able to stop Melanie. In the next moment, he remembered the tracker’s fail-safe.
Flug scrambled through the pockets of his coat for a second before he found what he was looking for, a small remote with an antennae and singular button for him to press.
Flug quickly pressed the button, instantly causing Melanie’s tracker to send an electric current into her body through her ankle.
Demencia laughed maliciously in the background while Melanie squealed in pain as the electricity coursed through her veins until Flug took his finger off the button and she fell back towards the beach where 505 anxiously caught her in his arms.
Before Melanie could catch her breath, Flug loomed over her smugly and said, “I suggest you not attempt that again.”
505 tried to get Melanie to her feet, but she felt the pain in her legs and fell back down. 505 anxiously helped her steady herself until she got the feeling back in her legs and she could walk herself.
“Why do you hate me?” Melanie asked as she finally got the feeling back in her legs.
“It’s nothing personal, kid,” Flug said.
“Sure,” Melanie said sarcastically looking away.
Flug sighed and said, “Alright, how about I order some pizza so you can eat and start getting ready for bed?”
Melanie glared at Flug and didn’t say anything.
Flug crossed his arms and said, “Sulking won’t solve any of your problems, Melanie.”
Melanie moved her head over so that she was looking ahead past anyone who was standing with her.
Annoyed at her attitude, Flug walked in front of her line of sight, held the remote with his finger right over the button, and said, “Start walking to the manor if you don’t mind.”
505 winced nervously before looking back at Melanie.
Melanie looked Flug down suspiciously with a nasty glare as she summoned her wings, flapped a large cloud of sand in his direction, and walked on ahead. Demencia chuckled wildly in the background while Melanie dissolved her wings and kept walking away, hoping that her behavior provided enough of a distraction for Sadie to escape.
505 looked between Melanie and his dad nervously to see what would happen next.
Flug coughed up a storm and glared wordlessly at her. He was about to press the button, but he changed his mind and decided to just let it go.
Instead, Flug followed Melanie up the stairs to the boardwalk with Demencia and 505 in tow and called after her, “Don’t forget to rinse off your feet!”
A few minutes later, their feet were rinsed, and the group was walking back up to the manor.
As they were walking, Flug pulled out his phone to make the pizza order and asked, “Okay, what kind of pizza would you two like?”
While 505 was thinking, Melanie answered, “Freedom from Black Hat flavored pizza.”
Flug disregarded her response as he ordered the pizzas, making sure to warn Demencia against eating the pizzas all by herself before it arrived.
That was when Melanie heard Sadie’s voice again. She was singing in the distance, but Melanie could hear the voice clearly. She never knew Sadie’s telepathy could project this far.
Melanie turned around to look at the beach and heard Sadie sing, “A bhuí le Rí na bhFeart go bhfeiceam, Mura mbeam beo ina dhiaidh ach seachtain, Gráinne Mhaol agus míle gaiscíoch, Ag fógairt fáin ar Ghallaibh.”
Flug quickly entered her line of sight as he bent down to her eye level and asked with a raised brow, “Is there something on your mind?”
Melanie stepped back in surprise, looked askance, and said, “Always. My mind rarely ever stops thinking, you know. If you’re really curious, I’m wondering how long it’ll be before I see the beach again or any beach again. I’m grateful that I got to see the beach today, but I’m scared that this could be the last time I see it.”
Flug straightened up and replied, “That is a valid concern. Considering what Lord Black Hat may have planned, it could be a while.”
Melanie’s wistful expression flashed to one of panic. Hearing those words shook Melanie to her core. She gripped her arm and began to shake in place.
Flug’s stern expression loosened to show some sympathy before changing back to one of apathy as he gently took Melanie’s hand and said, “Come on now. Let’s go back inside. Our food and your bedtime will be here soon.”
Melanie anxiously phased her hand through Flug’s, wrapped her arms around herself, and replied, “Do I have to? I don’t want to go.”
“Melanie, you don’t have a choice,” Flug said coldly.
“That’s what you get for being a dumb hero!” Demencia jeered.
505 turned around and put a sympathetic hand on Melanie’s shoulder, but she crumpled to the ground and started crying in a panic.
“I can’t go back in there,” Melanie cried as her voice broke. “I can’t!”
Flug sighed deeply and said, “505, can you take Melanie to the living room and put a movie on for her please? And make sure it isn’t one of Demencia’s crime scene videos.”
“You’re no fun!” Demencia quipped.
505 picked up Melanie and carried her so that her head was resting on his shoulder so that she could see the sea behind them. The trio then went on their way.
Along the way, Melanie could hear Sadie sing her song about Grace O’Malley again. She sang it when they hung out at the Nunja camp where they first met, so Melanie understood roughly what the lyrics meant. She clung to that memory as 505 continued carrying her back to the house of horrors and the sea slowly went out of view.
Translated, the lyrics meant:
“Oh-ro You are welcome home, Oh-ro You are welcome home, Oh-ro You are welcome home, Now that summer’s coming!
Welcome lady who faced such troubles, Your capture brought us to our ruin, With our fine land usurped by thieves, And you sold to the foreigners!
Oh-ro You are welcome home, Oh-ro You are welcome home, Oh-ro You are welcome home, Now that summer’s coming!
Gráinne O’Malley comes over the sea, With armed warriors as her guard, They’re Irishmen – not French nor Spanish, And they will rout the foreigners!
Oh-ro You are welcome home, Oh-ro You are welcome home, Oh-ro You are welcome home, Now that summer’s coming!
May it please the King of Miracles that we might see, Even if we only live for week after, Gráinne Mhaol and a thousand warriors – Routing all the foreigners!
Oh-ro You are welcome home, Oh-ro You are welcome home, Oh-ro You are welcome home, Now that summer’s coming!”
Melanie clung to those words and to the sight of the ocean until Sadie’s voice and the ocean were out of range.
