Hi ABL!! This is more of a data question then anything but it might not actually be answerable.

How does the world of BL define a successful show? Is it money made on ads revenue? Streams? Trending hashtags??

Granted in North American media I also couldn’t answer this question, but I could gage based on…article reviews or critical acclaim. Or something.

I see soooooo many people saying something flopped or was massively successful, but truly. How on earth are we making those benchmarks?

I figure you might have at least a tiny sliver of insight into how this works! Or at least a key word I can take to google LOL. Thanks as always!!!!!

Well for GMMTV et al, it's YT views. So that's easy. We can see those eyeballs outright.

The streaming platforms obfuscate data (that is one of the reasons SAG is still on strike) but we can see things like where it's ranked on their internal leader boards (what's "popular on Viki" for example). How many reviews something has. How many collections and lists it's on. How many people on MDL have it listed as "currently watching"

More key is how much chatter a show is getting. How many comments. But also...

Literally when you do a Google search for that IP:

How are the hit returns?

How many top spots does it hold above the fold on Google main (using private or incognito mode).

Are people blogging about it? Think pieces?

Are there reaction vids?

FMVs?

Reddit chatter?

BTS's?

Interviews with actors?

The amount of fan content generated around an IP tells you a lot about the number of viewers - since it is all a numbers game. Commenters (those who visibly/trackably react to content) are more common than (content) creators. Ghosts (passive consumers) are more common than commenters.

There are those in EntDA working on formulas for predictive fan base numbers sourced in the ratios of these.

Lemme try to explain...

In other words, the fans who create content for IPs (fanfic, art, meta analysis, FMVs, etc...) are the rarest. Those who interact with the content, leave star reviews, comment on the above fan-made content, engage in discourse, leave YT comments, are the second rarest. Those who tend to do nothing more than ... well, ghost (maybe have a subscription, maybe save the vid to a playlist or on MDL, maybe read this on Tumblr but don't react to it). They are the largest contingent but hardest to track.

If we could get a good handle on the first 2, there's usually a predictable ratio that can be drawn for the fan base as a whole, the largest number 3 - ghosts.

For example:

For every 1 creator there are 100 commenters and 1000 ghosts. Something like that. However the nature of this ratio is dependent on venue and vocality of the fan base (often a generational thing). So like, most Kpop stans are vocal, but 4th gen stans tend to be more noisy online, even though 3rd gen groups tend to have bigger overall fan bases. (Superstars, like super hits, are non-viable non-predictive outliers. There can never be another KP, or 2g, and we can't use their numbers to predict anything. Just like Taylor Swift or BTS can't be used to predict/estimate the success of a new pop venture).

back to the BL fandom

Here on Tumblr you can tell what's popular by which ones are getting the most gifsets.

That's how we know Only Friends is out performing Dangerous Romance. (I mean I could check the numbers on YT but I don't really have to.)

Also, I bet you good money Kiseki is garnering more eyeballs than You Are Mine. Again, I can say that with confidence just based on the content that's being created for that IP in this one venue.

On a practical level, in the ET industry, if there is chatter about a BL outside of BL circles (as happened with KP) you know it's gotten HUGE (by BL standards).

The moral of this story, incidentally, is if you like a thing, doesn't matter how shy you are, if you want it to continue, get a second season, whatever, you gotta NOT JUST WATCH IT BUT TALK about it. Online, where careers are made and broken. Squeaky wheel and all that.

Entertainment is about attention. More money is always thrown at the thing getting the most attention.

Just like politics.

OKAY SO !!!! crush is this sapphic romcom that like i would never watch if it was straight but its one of those movies where EVERYONE is gay but two characters <3 anyways quick notes of the plot:

its set at a highschool where theres this girl, Paige who really REALLY likes this other girl, Gabby, who's on the track team.

Paige is an artist !!! she wants to do this summer programme at Calarts but cannot get her art Right for the like prompt they've used for her admission if that makes sense. like the art is not arting basically

anyways there's also this anonymous artist called Kingpun (the art has puns in it hence the name) around school who spray paints these cool murals but because its school property its an Issue. everyone thinks its paige but it isn't her

Paige is called to the principal and she's meant to be suspended as they're gonna blame her for the art on school property but she is forced instead to join an extracurricular activity + to work out who Kingpun actually is. obviously the loser picks track because of Gabby <333

anyways she ends up joining the team but she needs coaching, and instead of being coached by Gabby like she wanted, the team's coach forces her to be coached by AJ, Gabby's sister

Paige then goes to a party later in the week hosted by one of her friends because of another Kingpun art that hinted at them being there. she bumps into AJ trying to get away from another girl she's not interested in and they try and work out together who KP is but kinda fails. Gabby is there too and paige takes Many shots w her so she gets Drunk

the next morning for training practice w AJ they have a moment between the session Paige shows AJ some of her art and they talk about Calart n stuff and we find out Paige has never had a first kiss or anything like that and AJ is like "damn thats crazy" (not rlly but you get what i mean)

we see them like over a few weeks grow closer and closer and its like aww gay people <3

anyways but then they have this extremely gay scene where after practice AJ lets paige stand on her skateboard while they hold hands and she rolls her on it for a little while <3333 i love gay people

paige then spots KP's notebook (we know bc like. KP is written All Over It) and she messages them online and says she'll give it back to them that night at school

When they go that night its: Paige, the two straights that are dating that she's friends with, AJ and gabby and eventually when they're alone Paige and GABBY kiss and its very VERY awkward

after The kiss we see a car drive off very loudly and like Everyone knows its this one guy called Tim so we're like "YAYYYY we know who Kingpun is now time to tell the principal" but Paige also wants to confront him first

Then there's like this trip for the track team where they go off somewhere and they have to stay in this hotel for a championship thing idk . i cant remember why exactly that well but it ends with AJ and Paige sharing a room and bed

theres a party that night before the track thingy, we find out tim very much is Not KP and AJ and Paige have to play 7 minutes in heaven but instead its a bathroom and long story short they KITH <333

its then very awkward afterwards tho and like the scene right after paige asks if it'll be awkward later and aj is like "nah" it cuts to them being like ten metres away from each other in the bed its ridiculous true cinema tho <3

the two have another very heartwarming scene and we find out like how AJ came out as bi and shit and how badly her family took it at first in comparison to how well they took her sister coming out

Paige doesnt really sleep that night and she slips out to go to the vending machine she'd seen earlier and she's then met with a drunk Gabby trying to get some crisps out of the vending machine and failing terribly

Gabby attempts to kiss paige but paige moves away, saying she actually likes someone else now, and gabby kinda takes it badly but she's still kind of okay with it and goes back to her room

the next day Paige is PANICKING because she realises that aj thinks it was both of their first kisses but it Wasnt bc of Gabby and she wants to tell AJ but hasn't had a moment to

she and the track team do the race and they do well YAYYYy

but as they're celebrating gabby then wants to apologise, in front of the rest of the friends, about her drunk ass trying to kiss paige- but also mentions how it wouldn't have been their first time doing so

we see aj is hurt and paige wants to go and explain herself but then instead aj drops the bombshell that she is Kingpun and just . then leaves.

gabby and aj have a moment when we see just how much aj is overshadowed by gabby without her knowing and so on

aj and paige dont speak for what is probably like three days and to paige it feels like literally Forever and they have this conversation for like five mins and aj reveals she doesnt want to be paige's second choice in the whole scenario and doesnt really give paige a chance to actually explain

paige goes to the principal and is like "yeah im actually kingpun lol isnt that crazy" but it turns out aj had already handed HERSELF in for the whole situation

paige then comes up w a genius idea where she paints this huge ass mural in one night (i know damn well she did NOT sleep) where its like loads of different moments she had between aj that showed her falling in love w her and that ALSO qualifies for the calarts programme thingy

gabby brings aj BACK when this election for class president is happening and like one of the straight two wins and while everyone is like happy for the girl who won she then brings paige up and she talks to aj and shows her the mural and they KITH <3333

so yeah basically im gonna be converting this whole thing into a smau bc im not normal <3

i did skim a few parts of this bc sorry but adhd brain CANNOT read this much JASHJAHSJHS but i did get the general gist of it!!! it sounds so cute omg

As the weeks have passed with KP ending it's amazing how bereft I feel.

I am so grateful for the dedicated folks keeping the fandom alive with fanfics, artworks, those hilarious screen shots with tweets overlaying them.

But gosh, I am just...sad. I want to be back in the moment. The frenzy of the new episodes coming out. When I could open Tumblr and see a half dozen incredible breakdowns of scenes and motivations. The theories of what was coming next. Knowing that whatever we dreamed up we'd still get blindsided. Planning my life around being able to watch the shows as they aired.

I know there are things on the horizon I am looking forward to. Young Royals S2. Red White and Royal Blue. Eventually Heartstopper S2.

But I don't think any of those will light up the fandom like KinnPorsche did. I loved the maturity of it. That it was unabashedly itself and joyful in how it told the story. A story where being queer was not the story, it was just a facet of a complex human experience. No more or less than any other.

While part of me longs for a season 2, another part wants it to just be left where it is. I am so terrified of a sophomore slump that I'd prefer the series be left at one pinnacle season rather than be diminished. But...I also want to beg BoC for season 2. A chance to revisit and spend time with these characters we all love so much.

Hey, I see that you really love kimchay as a ship and I was just wondering what makes them so great to you. I'll be honest, out of all the ships on KP, they interest me the least and I'd love to be more invested in them. What's their appeal to you? (maybe it'll convince me to get more into them)

Hmmmm okay so this one takes some thought, and buckle down because it's going to get loooong and rambley lmao. For one let's start by saying I do not honestly think they are the best ship in the show, I do not talk about them the most and come up with more meta about them because I like them more than kinnporsche or vegaspete. When it comes down to it, I think I engage with them more because I'm more interested in how they actually develop and more invested in how they end, as well as the message their story tells. Which, yes is a little confusing as a distinction to make lol.

With kinnporsche and vegaspete, I usually come away from each new episode with an overall feeling of being satisfied with how they are progressing that doesn't particularly inspire the kind of fandom brainrot I have for kimchay. And, this may sound a little heartless, but quite honestly from a writing point of view I would have no objections to kinnporsche or vegaspete having an unhappy ending. In fact there were a few times where blatantly said I think Kinn dying would be a satisfying end to his storyline. Like yes it would emotionally cripple me 😂 I would mourn like Vegas with his fucking hedgehogs if any one on the main couples died or even if they broke up. But from a writing standpoint, it would not be a bad choice and I would respect it, and I really do tend to try and watch these shows with the mindset of both a fan and an author.

Kimchay tho? I've said from the beginning that this is a particular kind of narrative that seems so purposefully set apart from the rest of the story, so well positioned as this almost mirror world to the rest of the plot, that I both never know where it's going and am also so sure that the only satisfying ending could be a happy one. Mostly because Porchay, like I love Kim but most of the reasons I am obsessed with this ship are because Porchay is a very specific archetype of character that drives me insane.

I've compared him to Lan Sizhui from mdzs before, and it's pretty accurate, the child born into a dark environment who is both innocent and sheltered and yet intrinsically shaped by the tragic events of his life, his happy demeanor only one side of a coin, the other being a heartbreaking sadness and an untapped strength that the narrative is pushing him to finally use. Porchay is a cringey adorable inexperienced teenager, yes. But he is only just that if you only give him the briefest of passing thoughts.

Enter Kim, and as many wattpad y/n jokes as I've made, what Porchay has with Kim is in my opinion anything but a celebrity crush. Well, obviously it starts as that, but even then. Porchay gets his first interaction with Kim because he is someone who sees the details, the little things. He's not just another fanboy, he's studied Wik's music and videos like he's tried to get down to the marrow of how he ticks. And they have him say from the very first tutoring session, he's not just here for Wik, he's here for every side of Kim that he's willing to show. And he toes this perfect line between saying what he wants and never breaking Kim's boundaries and the growing comfort he gets around the teen. And you can see Kim completely falls for it. He's got practiced aloofness down to a fucking art, and yet we see it crack and show genuine amusement and fondness over and over again.

And with the later episodes we can see how big of a deal that is, because literally the only other time we see Kim lose his control is when he's angry. In my opinion, giving into positive emotions is a much bigger tell than giving into anger. Kim not being able to resist kissing Porchay says way more than him being willing to shoot someone for him, and this is also a message the narrative itself tells us.

Take kinnporsche for example. For them, the moments that mattered were the ones they gave into being soft, being tender, being open with each other. Stolen kisses, wandering hands, harsh words becoming private whispers. These were the moments that were ultimately rewarded. Kinnporsche is a show that says violence and pain can be your life but you can still find meaning in allowing in love and kindness. And it's why I really really believe kimchay can't have an unhappy ending, because this is not a show that punishes people for being like Porchay, it's a show that says the choices he's made are how you find hope.

So. Because I have to stop talking at some point. Kimchay. A story about a young man who was raised by his brother to be a kind, honest, loving person, who always reaches for what he wants and pushes the man he is falling in love with to open up and give into tenderness and honesty, while Kim fights every step and tries to remain the cold cruel person the world made him into. That is the story I am obsessed with, and why I love these two.

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

big boss has a really compelling negative character arc and has a lot of grayness to him. he's a hero to some and a villain to others, and we get to watch the slider slowly go from one end of the other, which is not a kind of main character that you see a lot, especially in games. i think a lot of the discourse about him, including the insanely polar-opposite takes of dudebros who think he's a super cool anti-hero vs the queer fans who think he's an irredeemable psychopath from day 1, is because neither one is entirely wrong. also, the che guevara parallel really really works for that reason.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

hayter's voice acting does not always land. sorry but it's true.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

definitely kings by tribe society (spotify, lyrics)

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

i like how many artists reject the way his canon models are mostly hairless with a chiseled six-pack (bc lbr neither one of those makes sense for the character) and go some degree of bear with him. 10/10.

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

...my gut instinct was "no" but honestly he's lived in very tight quarters with other people for many years so he's probably a pretty mindful roommate. the downside is he also probably doesn't know how to function without a KP chart and will be more than a little bitchy if I don't stick to whatever day of the week i'm supposed to wash the floors. i could do worse.

not sure how to parse this question so i'm going to hype my other bb ships which are bbeva and bbroy. he's weak to a very specific type of person okay.

i don't really have this? i do wish we had more closure on his relationship with eva, the way i make sense of eva pining for him for the rest of her life while he barely even mentions her is that i hc that their last conversation was 1) about the twins, 2) went extremely badly, and 3) she feels guilty about how badly he took it while he just cut her out of his life and never looked back. but i wish we actually knew what happened.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

not sure i have a favorite but my least favorite thing by far is to have him watch someone else fight. choreographing fight scenes is a pain in the ass already bc i tend to try to work within specific arts a character might know like judo or aikido instead of just doing it by vibes, and the last thing i need is to deal with a character that uses every single technical term for all of those techniques and provides running commentary on top of it.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

mgs3 was the first game i played bc i was told to play in timeline order and my first impression was that he was kind of a dumbass but in an endearing way and his relationship with the boss was cute. which more or less still holds up as part of my opinion on him at that point on the timeline. it got more complicated.

what i don't understand is, how do you assemble the sprites? i can made individual pieces of pixel art but how do use the tileset to make stuff, y'know?

I'm not entirely sure what it is you're asking about, but I'll try and see if I can give you an answer anyway.

Regarding "assembling", it helps to have each individual sprite on a seperate layer, so that they can overlap without removing one another when making a panel. This also works when assembling a sprite, but you put each "limb" on a seperate layer instead.

Regarding "using the tileset", the tiles in KPS all have the same size of 20x20 pixels and aligned on a grid that's 16 tiles long and 12 tiles wide (320x240 pixels total, which I then enlarge to 640x480 afterwards.)

I hope either of these answers were the one you were looking for.

KinnPorsche Ep08 Lines of Power

Deep breath, everyone! This is probably our last chance to breathe easily before the finale. Enjoy the calming atmosphere while it lasts.

Without further ado, I shall address the lines of power, staging, and framing in Episode 8 of KinnPorsche... actually, I'm gonna take it easy because it was a very chill episode without too much wild, crazy line business.

Look, if you didn't already realize in the first 10 minutes that this episode is pure comedy, this shot should seal the deal. A head popping out at a random angle from a doorway is peak comedy, a pure classic staging art.

Porsche, why so cute? 😳

You guys. You guys. This looks like just a normal, cute shot on their date, right? Right?

WRONG. You've been FOOLED.

Look in the background. It's a mirror, another damn mirror!

Kinn is perfectly framed in the mirror, his other self haunting their date in a much more subtle way than Tawan did. This is a clever reminder that even though things seem sweet and fluffy now, they still have Kinn's alter ego and other life to contend with (and integrate?) if they want to be happy in the long run.

I haven't had a chance to review it yet, but I know @daltoneering has published a huuuuge meta about the mirrors in KP, so check that out for more mirror thoughts.

Nope, nothing serious. Head empty, only cute boy with beautiful golden Wat Arun temple to frame his face from the background.

Answer: TWO cute boys with a beautiful temple behind them!

Again, nothing serious here, but I just want to point out that the sweethearts are off center to better incorporate the pretty golden glow of the temple behind them into the shot.

You can also take this as slight foreshadowing of the religious element coming later in the episode.

The lines of power were a bit shy this episode, but for this scene, they came out in full force.

This is reminiscent of the Emperor Korn shot in Ep 05 (for good reason considering they're the same set), but this is so different and so romantic. The sparkles from the waterfall, the glowing lines of the pool, and the lower lines of the ceiling are all pointing to the central couple, giving them the focus and the power.

The lines say this is love, and love wins.

Steal every bit of happiness you can! (I'm not just saying that to Kinn and Porsche, btw.)

Lots of soft, wavey lines of light... I can't help but think that all the soft lines are helping to emphasize how much their relationship has softened.

Yet the shot also shows Porsche clutching at Kinn's face for dear life. I'm not over that, not in the slightest. The boy is holding on with all his might. He's gonna be fierce about it.

...he probably also needs some air.

I could try to say that the big thick wooden line in the middle symbolizes this or that, or it's about Porsche being sneaky and not just asking Kinn the questions he should ask... but sometimes a line really is just a line.

For this gag to work, the characters have to be divided and unable to see each other.

So? Not a line of power, imo. But the shot is still very nicely framed with dynamic composition.

Pretty, so damn pretty.

Great staging composition of the three cast members -- Porsche low, monk middle, Joe high.

Scenery is fantastic and engaging from foreground to background.

The angle of the sidewalk line on the left helps draw attention to the actors.

On top of it all, Porsche stands out in his black suit against the soft white, cream, and orange color palette.

If you didn't give this shot much thought during the show, take a minute to stare right now. Enjoy an aesthetic moment!
