Arachnophobia: A bedrock edition mod

Hunstman spiders are active predators which spawn the same areas as wolf spiders (vanilla spiders) at a slightly less common rate. They behave mostly the same as wolf spiders, but are much faster and vary in size, larger huntsman spiders are more common in warmer climates.

Cellar spiders (also known as daddy longlegs) are common cave dwellers that solemn move unless disturbed. Upon spawning they will seek out or build a web and lie perfectly still until another mob touches it. Their venom isn't lethal, but beware that they can easily trap you in silk if you don't pay attention to where you're going.

The vinegaroon is a strange arachnid resembling a cross between a spider and a scorpion, they spawn in swamps and jungles in the dark. Vinegaroons are not venomous, but instead have the ability to spray acid projectiles from their abdomen. Real life vinegaroon acid is akin to vinegar (hence their name), but arachnophobia's vinegaroon sprays hydrochloric acid instead, and it can destroy some blocks.

Jumping spiders are commonly found in densely wooded biomes and are typically docile to players. Though they have very little health, they hit hard for their size and are quite agile, they also specialize in hunting other spiders and deal twice as much damage to arachnids. Jumping spiders can be tamed by giving them spider eyes, they can sit on your head and will immediately pounce on any threat. Like frogs, jumping spiders have three variants based on the climate they spawn in.

Whip spiders are cave dwelling arachnids which are not venomous, but they hit hard and they are absurdly fast. Whip spiders are highly aggressive and cannibalistic towards their own kind, but only sometime attack players unprovoked, every once in a while one will run up and punch you, launching you tens of blocks away. If a hostile mob is nearby, the whip spider will wave its "antennae", and will wave them more intensely if a particularly dangerous mob is near, just remember that the mob only has to be a potential threat to the whip spider, so it'll warn you if there's something less dangerous to players such as an iron golem.

The harvestman (also called the daddy longlegs, a title it shares with the cellar spider) is a harmless omnivore arachnid that spawns in roofed forests and redwoods. Harvestmen can be mounted if you feed them a poisonous potato, and controlled with a special item. If a predatory arachnid is nearby, the harvestman will panic and flee, becoming incredibly fast when mounted.

Neith is a powerful boss which can be summoned using a special eye rarely dropped by spiders, and alternates between melee, ranged and AOE attacks, and has the ability to control spiders. If you defeat Neith, she will reward you with a special armor which can be infused with the shed exoskeleton of an arachnid to gain their abilities, receiving both a buff and debuff (e.g. jumping spider armor allows you to jump super far, but it also makes you tiny).

The tarantula is a huge spider that sometimes spawns in caves above y coordinate 45 and cannot be controlled by neith, as she considers them to be heathens. Tarantulas are territorial and solemn go far from their home, and prefer to hunt at night. They will attack any other mob and will defend their territory fiercely from other tarantulas, once it's day they retreat to their caves, their aggro radius is halved and they will warn you before attacking.

One of serveral non-arachnids in the mod, moths are flying insects which commonly spawn at night in most overworld biomes and have a variety of biome specific variants, are frequently preyed upon by arachnids, especially web spiders such as the daddy longlegs. Moths are harmless although some variants are poisonous (they inflict debuffs if you hit them, but don't actually fight back), and will start to slowly die if they exist in the world for too long. Moths will often fly towards länterns, and will follow you if you hold one, they also have a rare chance to drop their wings which can be equipped.

The wolf spider is literally just the vanilla minecraft spider, but remodeled. It's behavior has not been altered in any way.

Like the wolf spider, the redback spider is the vanilla cave spider but redesigned.

Emperor scorpions can be found in tropical biomes at night. They are not very fast, but are large and powerful and can use their shield-like pincers to deflect attacks.

Deathstalkers are scorpions that spawn in arid biomes at night, especially in deserts. They are much smaller and weaker than emperors, but possess deadly venom.

A massive semi-aquatic arachnid, the thunder scorpion is a force to be reckoned with. Thunder scorpions do not spawn naturally, and instead are found in a similar way to the sniffer, since like the sniffer it is also an extinct prehistoric species.

Thunder scorpions can be raised and will be docile towards whoever raises them, but to anything and anyone else they can become aggressive, they start out very small and grow very slowly, but over a long time will continue to grow and become an eventually unstoppable killing machine. The modern day atmosphere is much different from that of the thunder scorpion's original time period, meaning that fully grown thunder scorpions slowly grow weaker until they inevitably die.

I will also accept content from the anthology mangas and magazine articles. In other words everything is fine except fandom stuff/unofficial fanworks.

If the fact is related to Vocaloid/Virtual Singers, it must be relevant to Project SEKAI in some way.

No leaks - Leaked content is usally low quality and I will not be able to post the fact until the content has been released officially, so I'd rather you didn't submit it at all.

Please submit a source for your fact - a screenshot, image, video or link is OK! If you don't have any then that's fine, but please at least tell me what story/card/etc is the source so I can get the screenshot/image myself.

If the source is not available on the EN or JP server, or is not available online, please attach an image/video! - I only play on the EN and JP servers, and will only be able to get screenshots and recordings of content available on those servers. If your fact relates to content exclusive to any other server or is from a physically published source and you do not provide an image/video, I will not accept the submission.

Asks are also open if you have any questions about a fact or if you have any general questions for me. Due to the incredibly overwhelming amount of asks I get nowadays, it is impossible for me to answer everything. Sincerest apologies for that. I still try to answer as many as possible but it could take a while for your ask to get a response. Also please do not ask me about shipping.

Tagging

Characters are tagged Firstname Lastname (excluding Vocaloids). For example, facts about Ichika will be tagged as Ichika Hoshino.

Events will be tagged using the translations from the Project SEKAI wiki, rather than the official English names. This is just for consistency so I don't have to go back and redo tags whenever EN changes a title.

The media will also be tagged (e.g: Hatsune Miku: COLORFUL STAGE or Petit SEKAI)

I've been playing the Sims since 2010 and making CC for just about as long; though my current focus is Sims 4 equestrian-themed content in collaboration with my partner in crime, Schrodcat, who you can find on DA. Anyway, something tells me that it'd be neat to have a well-organised pinned post, so here goes.

I go by M around this place, and I've been back here since 2020 after almost a decade of absence from this hellsite. I'm a 28-year-old queer woman from Indonesia, and I spend around 30% of my fandom life writing fic, 5% being a connoisseur of...less-than-stellar and often obscure movies starring hot actresses that I like (Jeri Ryan, Gates McFadden, Denise Crosby, Laura Innes, Sherry Stringfield, Maura Tierney to name a few...), and the remaining 65% lamenting the fact that I'm a fandom participant from a non-Western country where English is not an official language which is...well, let's say it can be quite a lonely existence.

My two primary fandoms here are ER and Star Trek (The Next Generation, Voyager, Picard), so you'll find that most of my posts and reblogs are related to those two - with a dash of other stuff. I got into ER during lockdown in 2020, and it remains one of the best decisions I've ever made. It is my favourite show ever, and as of now Kerry Weaver is still the only queer character on TV that I can relate to fully as a struggling queer woman in a less-than-supportive environment. ER was also my entry to online fandom spaces, particularly Twitter and Tumblr. Star Trek is the one fandom I never expected to really get into, given that I was never too big on sci-fi, though according to my mum it runs in the family since my late grandfather loved The Original Series and was an admirer of Spock. So far I have watched TNG, VOY, and PIC, with VOY being my favourite - especially my beloved former Borg drone and half-Klingon.

As I said, fanfiction is my thing here and I've been into it since I was around 14 - though I didn't start writing seriously until I was an adult. Among other things, fic helped me learn English tremendously as a teenager, and though naturally I still make mistakes here and there I feel far more confident writing fic in English than in Indonesian, lol. So far I have 29 published works on AO3, all ER and Trek. My favourite characters, and thus the ones I write the most about, are Kerry Weaver, Susan Lewis, Abby Lockhart, and Carol Hathaway (ER); Tasha Yar, Data, Beverly Crusher, and Deanna Troi (TNG); and Kathryn Janeway, B'Elanna Torres, and Seven of Nine (VOY). My preferred ships are Kerry/Susan, Kerry/Abby, and Abby/Susan (ER); Picard/Crusher and Data/Tasha (TNG); and B'Elanna/Seven (VOY).

GUIDELINES for ARTISTS

>> Artists can submit one or two pieces. If you are creating moodboards, only two boards per artist will be accepted. One moodboard per prompt.

>> Art must not have been published before, been a commission, or be associated with a fic at the time of claims. 

>> When you submit your art, it should be finished. You may of course keep working on it until posting.

POSTING

>> Every team posts their collaboration to the challenge collection on AO3. The collection is set up so that works cannot be seen yet by the public.

>> Once posting starts, the mods will reveal one or more collaborations, depending on the number of teams, every day until the end of the week. Once a collaboration has gone live, teams can update the posting date of their work if they wish to do so.

>> Art should be embedded in the fic or be linked, depending on the preferences of the artist. In order to ensure that the art is only publicly visible once the AO3 post has been revealed to the public, art should be hosted accordingly, i.e. invisibly to the public until the date of posting, as well. Apart from using certain photo hosting pages or personal website space, this can be done e.g. via a private Discord server or in a Tumblr or Pillowfort post set to private.

DROPPING 

Talk to your mods! There is usually a solution, both for the person dropping and the person remaining in the bang (e.g. finding a pinch hitter).

>> Should any participants drop out after claims without a very good reason and extenuating circumstances, participants will not be allowed to take part in the next round of reverse challenges hosted by Sterek Reverse Challenges. 

>> Check-ins and deadlines have to be met. Missing a check-in or a deadline without a very good reason will result in the participant being disqualified from the current challenge as well as the next round of Sterek Reverse Challenges. Failing to plan ahead, e.g. for holidays, data loss, etc., does not constitute a good reason! 

>> Dropping and ghosting will receive a lifetime ban with the participant in question also being removed from the Discord Server.

So I'm working on another Eurorack module, definitely the most complicated and ambitious one I've attempted. I'm starting with a proven circuit, and the modifications I'm making are extant in others' versions — but since I don't know exactly how they made those mods, I'm muddling through with it. It doesn't help that the circuit is mostly analog, and that it's got History, and that it's really weird to start with.

The circuit itself goes back to the 1970s, and the progenitor of West Coast Synthesis, Buchla, in the form of their module 266, the Source of Uncertainty. As the name suggests, it's all about noise and randomness, with different colors of noise and different kinds of random voltages to modulate other circuits. The idea was reworked in the 1990s by Grant Richter for his modular company, Wiard. He came up with a three-part design: a clock generator, a system that uses that clock to generate three kinds of random control voltages, and a set of audio voices based on those random voltages. He called this the Wogglebug, named after the character from the Oz books. He published the circuit for this, and a revised version with some extra bells and whistles is made by Make Noise as the Richter Wogglebug; a close variant of the Wiard module was made as a DIY kit by Erica Synths, who then redesigned it to be their Swamp module, also a DIY kit. When they stopped making the Swamp a few years ago, they released the design as open source, and that's my starting point.

On the Swamp, the clock controls how often the sample and hold, well, holds; you can affect the internal clock rate via the Rate knob or by control voltage (attenuated by the Rate CV knob), or you can plug in an external clock. The Stepped CV Is just the bare sample and hold, steady random voltages until the next clock. Smooth CV is that but with a slope between the steps — that signal but smoothed out. The Smooth Range knob affects how quickly that slope can change; at slower settings it'll not quite get to the destination if it's too big a jump. The Swamp CV does what the other modules called "Woggling" — it heads for the desired voltage but it overshoots, it swoops around while homing in on the Stepped voltage. The Tone and the Swamp outputs are audio following the Stepped CV and the Swamp CV — each can be either a square wave or a triangle wave, selectable by the switches — and the two are combined via ring mod at the Ring output. If you plug an external audio signal in, it overrides the Tone signal to be RM'ed with the Swamp.

There are a couple of details of the Swamp's design I have to work around to start. First, the design depends on vactrols — encapsulated devices where an LED illuminates a light-dependant resistor — which can be difficult to get these days, particularly in the one-LED-and-two-LDR version that one of them must be. I think I have that sorted out. The second bit is the sample-and-hold chip it uses. The original used the LF398 monolithic S&H chip, but the Swamp instead switched that out for the K1100CK2, the Eastern-bloc S&H chip, which is very easy for a Latvian company like Erica to get but is more difficult to find for an American. So I've revised the circuit to swap the LF398 back in, using the original Wogglebug circuit as my guide.

The other tricky parts with my design process are including the modifications that Make Noise introduced. There are three: a manual pushbutton to hold a voltage in place, an output for the 'bursts' of random gates, and an alternate input to the sample and hold circuit, which you can crossfade with the internal source. The button is created by just shorting the "Hold" pin on the chip to ground, so that's easy enough. The output for "Bursts" just needed a jack, though i may add a buffer so that it doesn't affect the internals. But the alternate S&H signal source took some doing; I think I've settled on a three-opamp crossfade circuit that Tom Wiltshire of Electric Druid posted.

Of course, now that I've figured out the circuit and schematics, the hard part is going to be laying out the circuit boards. It's going to be a pretty big module spread across two different boards — one for the seven pots, 12 jacks, two switches, and single pushbutton, and one for the guts of the circuit proper — plus a front panel with all its labels and design elements. It's always a little tricky taking a design from schematic to PCB layout, and this one's penchant for odd feedback loops is going to make things even more exciting.

For what it's worth, I'm planning on calling this module the Unsound Methodology HMTE, because the original Oz character (eventually the head of Oz's university) introduced himself as H.M. Wogglebug, T.E.: Highly Magnified Wogglebug, Thoroughly Educated.

Tainting The Angel So That She Falls: - Sakamaki Brothers

These ended up being long - typically for me - but since I’ve been a bit slow in pumping out content lately (*cough* here is a link to chapter 2 of my Yandere Zuko x Reader x Yandere Azula fic that has been occupying my time. Chapter 2 has links to both the Prologue and Chapter one at the start of it) I decided that I’d publish these seperately for each boy as I write them, and add links to the other boys’ headcanons as I write them.  So far I have Shu and Reiji done. Will add Ayato’s, Laito’s, Kanato’s and Subaru’s shortly, I’m working on Ayato and Laito’s ones as I publish these.

You were a righteous angel. A high-ranking celestial presence amongst filth of the Earth

Everyone, including yourself, believed you were incorruptible. You were the perfect, ideal angel; one of God’s favourites, even.

The first time you met Shu was when he was a young boy. You had landed on Earth during a mission and fell in a forest near a village, where two young boys rushed over to you, asking if you were okay.

You noted one was a vampire but felt no malice from him - if anything he was even pure of heart for a being such as himself.

He was friends with a human child, too, so you figured that you wouldn’t even try to harm him. He was young, and perhaps there may be some good to come from him in the future.

They helped you, and then you assured them you would be well.

The vampire boy was on your mind for several days, but then you moved on with your existence onto other matters.

Seasons passed as fast as decades and you were back in the same place as you had been a century or two prior, this time having heard reports of “dark influences” across the town, you were tasked with helping a junior angel learn how to ‘take care’ of ‘demonic’ beings as her supervisor.

In order to do this, however, you soon found you’d have to “fit in” with the other humans - most notably - an academy for teenagers.

The idea was less than entertaining for you. The thought of pretending to be a 16-year-old Girl, to you, was...not ideal.

Still, you and your assigned lower-rank angel (who was basically your student, really) disguised yourselves as students to track down specific otherworldly beings and ‘destroy’ them.

The moment your eyes met with his, you knew who he was. He’d grown well, at least on a physical level. Then again it had been at least two centuries since you had last seen him when he was oh-so-tiny and young.

His eyes were tired - a tiredness of the soul, hardened by life.

You didn’t think he knew who you were, though.

It was bittersweet for you. You’d let him be when he was a child but now he had become a fully grown vampire - and your new task was to rid of him.

But you were dutiful, and so that was exactly what you were going to do.

Posing as a young teenage girl, you attempted to try to get close to him, it was no easy task; he couldn’t know you knew who - what - he was, and he couldn’t find out you weren’t a human.

With time and much effort, you managed to “get to know” him. Did you feel bad for lying about who you were? Perhaps a little, but it was in the name of the divine.

As time passed, it got harder to lie to him, not because he was more suspicious of your intentions but because you found yourself actually beginning to like him, feeling emotions that were certainly forbidden.

Any advances were ignored by you and you feigned innocence and naivety that you were none the wiser of his attempts. They weren’t exactly subtle - he had the filthiest of minds, you found. But with every month you spent on Earth befriending him, the harder it got for you to try and kill him - and his brothers.

What you couldn’t have expected was that he was going to trap you in your own web of lies. You were alone with him in the Music Room after almost an entire year on Earth. Your assistant angel was beginning to become worried - wondering why the two of you haven’t killed the vampires and moved on with your task, yet.

You assured her that time held little significance in the scale of things, but that was a lie towards the divine, now. The truth was you desired more time with him.

He was strange and unbecoming and yet you found yourself falling for him - disgusted by yourself for it. He was a creature of the dark, and you could never be. You reminded yourself of the fact you’d have to betray him.

And in the Music Room, you were as he slept by the windowsill. The two of you sat in silence, no words required, and with a burdened heart you pulled out your heavenly blade and stood carefully, ready to strike him while he was still docile. He was a tired individual, so you hoped to make this quick and that he wouldn’t fight back.

Just as you swiftly moved your arms down to strike him in the heart, his hand grabbed your wrist with bone-crushing tightness. He scoffed and opened on of his eyes, as though this was nothing more than a small annoyance.

“Did you actually think it would be this easy to kill me?”

His words tore through you and you desperately tried to get your wrist out of his grasp

“I know who you are, (Y/N).”

Freezing and wide-eyed you stared at him. He manoeuvred the blade from your hands so it fell onto the floor and pushed you away, then pulled you up only to pin you against the wall, glaring at you.

Tears welled in your eyes, and you found yourself unable to fight him; you didn’t want to hurt him.

He seemed to realise this, realise you could destroy him where he stood but you were emotionally unable to bring yourself to do it.

You were in love with him.  

He kissed you. Bewildered you tried to push him back but then found yourself falling down into temptation, seduced by this gorgeous creature of sin.

It wasn’t until after the fact that you realised your mistake, but it was too late; your excellent pure wings that you’d been hiding in your human form revealed themselves by force, the glamour you held over them breaking. You gasped and wept in desperation was they rotted from a snowy white to a deathly black.

You have sinned.

And Shu wouldn’t have it any other way.

It wasthe first time she had indulged herself in this habit since hercoronation.  Before the coronation, whenthings were not normal but still her normal, she rode alone withsome regularity.  Living here with her Uncle Lamb escaping for anevening ride had been tricky, but it had been far from impossible.

Lamb waswholly committed to looking the other way. An unspoken agreement meant the house staff did the same, making thesight of Princess Claire slipping out of the palace in riding boots well afterdark a not unfamiliar sight.  Clad inriding boots well after dark, hair bound in a tight bun at the nape of her neck,she would spirit away down the rolling, manicured lawns of the palace to thestables.  After dark, they were quiet andempty.  

Theritual was almost a religious experience to her –– the quiet whispered greetingto her horse, saddling her, riding her, cooling her down, and getting her backinto the stable and settled for the night.

Butsince Claire’s coronation, the unspoken agreement had been more or less disregardedand she had been confined to the palace at night.  Surrounded by priceless treasures of anempire caught in a permanent ebb and flow of influence and importance, thewalls of the palace and its hundreds of rooms were stifling.  Though thoroughly aware of her privilege, shehad come to think of it as a gilded cage.

HRHPrincess Claire Elizabeth of York had never been the odds on favorite to becomethe Queen.  She came upon her role ratheraccidentally.  

HerUncle Lamb’s coronation was well before she was born and long before he hadbeen ready (he said).  He had been young – barely twenty –– when his mother passed away from cancer.  At the time, everyone (press, public, family) had just assumedthat the young king would someday marry. It was not for a lack of trying –– an impersonal royal matchmakingthrough diplomacy and whispered observations of “oh well she’s very pretty” met only with laughs and smirks.  Andwith the assumption of marriage camethe corollary assumption that Lamb would have children.  He would fulfill that which was chief among hisroyal duties: have children.  Then from thatlineage would come the next king or queen.

Clairehad never bothered herself with such assumptions or the point when the failurefor him to abide by them became a talking point.  To her, she was just Uncle Lamb.

He washardly a king at all in her eyes, though she knew the formalities to beobserved in the public eye.  Behindclosed doors, he had just been her goofy uncle who gave generously atChristmases and birthdays, told silly jokes with bad punchlines, traveled a lotfor work, and showed up on the television periodically, looking somber andtalking about pride in country.  

But thenthere was the accident that tore away nearly everything that she knew.  

Claire,at six, had not known that the world could change in a moment. At least until onecold afternoon.  She was asleep betweenher mother (Her Royal Highness PrincessJulia Louise, heir presumptive to the throne) and father in the back seatof a state car.  Her older sister (Her Royal Highness Princess Anne Catherine)was pressed between her mother and the car door, also slumbering. And then abridge fell out from beneath their motorcade, well above a snowy creek.

Shealways found it funny that something so profoundly disruptive could exist asonly a distant, fragmented memory.  Whentrying to recall it (something she rarelydid), she was bombarded with only a series of disjointed recollections ––full technicolor and visceral.  

The icecold water burning her throat when she gulped for air.

Thescreams of her mother (“Henry –– thegirls… save them”) that made her eardrums ache.

The roughhands on her arms, wrenching her away from her father, out of the water, andonto grass.  

Thescratch of a tartan blanket over her as she shivered violently, her teethfeeling as though they would grind themselves into dust.

Thesterile bite of hospital air and the soft, winter-chapped lips of the nurse whostood over her, whispering “you’re alive,love, you’re alive.”

Thesearing ache when she tried not to bealive any longer ––­­­­­­ violent compressions on her narrow chest that shiftedher bones.  

Thedoctor who smelled faintly of cigarettes imploring her to “breathe god dammit.”

Darkness. Cold. Emptiness.

She woketo her uncle’s broad thumb drawing small circles on her shoulder through astiff green hospital gown.  Being part ofthe royal family did not save her the indignity of a tie-back hospitalgown.  She was emotionless as her eyesdarted around the sterile room (tubes inher hand, Lamb’s warm touch, the hum of a fluorescent overhead light, the smellof cleaning fluid and layers of illness).

But thenthe realization hit her.  Her Uncle Lambhad no reason to be here, here except….

Andalthough she was young, she knew immediately that they were gone forever.

Her mother(Julia).  Her older sister (Anne).  Her father (Henry).

Dead.

Thosememories, while technicolor and visceral, were not what she rememberedbest.  More vivid than that tumble intothe creek was the moment when Lamb told her that her entire world had vanished.

Shemoved into Buckingham Palace and goofy Uncle Lamb awkwardly transitioned into afather-like figure.  She went to boardingschool, kicking and screaming, crying every time she left to anyone who wouldlisten.  It was only when she was caughtsmoking cigarettes in the girl’s lavatory that Lamb brought her back to Londonfor good.  It had been Christmas. Hisdisappointed eyes glared at her over half-moon spectacles when he said, “Youneed to manage your reputation.  Yourfuture rides on it.”

At thetime she had not grasped what he meant. But then, shortly after she turned fifteen, media chatter started thatthe King was a “confirmed bachelor.”  Claireguessed what it meant.  Nonetheless, Lambsat her down, brushed the back of his hand over her cheeks, and explained theconcept of a euphemism (something she alreadyknew).  He told her that he was notromantically interested in women (somethingelse she already knew).

Thencame the interview.

“Will we see the king marry?” thedoe-eyed reporter had asked, a finger nervously twisting at the cap on his pen.

With alaugh, Lamb’s response had been short: “Iwould not count on it.”

It wasonly then that the chatter about Claire started.She was no longer just the unfortunate child of a dead royal.  The lanky, awkward little thing –– an orphan –– was not really a placeholder heir presumptive. TheKing would not have children.  She was it.

And thenhe died.  Quietly, unexpectedly, warm inhis bed. A heart attack took him well before his time.

Thenewspaper headlines were none too flattering when Princess Claire Elizabeth – whohad been the third in line to the throne – was thrust into her new role.

Chiefamong the headlines: The AccidentalQueen.

Photographsof her from the boarding school materialized, no doubt from the stash of anunidentified, so-called friend. Cigarette dangling from her lip and skirtrolled at the waist to be shorter, every paper published it with the label: The Party Queen.

Readingit, Claire had thrown a vase against the door and screamed.  No one came to see what was the matter.  After a full meltdown in the bathroom, sheexited wrapped in one of her mother’s robes to see that the face had been sweptup and the flowers put into an identical cut crystal vase.

She wassuddenly stuck on the thought that both vases (the broken and the unbroken) were hers, but neither truly belonged to her.

“We willtake care of it ma’am,” was the official line given to her as she prepared forher coronation.  The newspapers becamenotably more generous in their coverage after that.

Gallingas the unflattering press had been, she threw herself into the work of a queenwith a certain abandon. Her dedication gnawed her other dreams, things she hadonly been allowed to dream as one with a laughably distant claim to the throne,clean from her bones.

The dayshe broke –– running down the hill, tear-streaked and needing a release–– had been a long and her every move choreographed by others.  

She had awokento the sound of bagpipes and immediately forgotten whatever dream she had beenhaving.  The only shadow of it was thewarmth of a touch on her cheek, the sensation of wide-open space, and sky asfar as the eye could see.  Then that toodissolved.

Shebathed, perfumed herself, sat staring as her hair and makeup were fixed andclothes laid out for her to dress.

Then itwas on to responding to a small selection of letters from the public (adoration, condolences, the sharing of personalstruggles), the red box (telegramsand state papers for her review and approval), and a series of meetings (the identities and positions of each visitorwhispered into her ear along with a brief explanation of the meeting’s purpose).

A lunchwith the Argentine ambassador (sea bassand vegetables, a glass of wine) and then preparing for an engagement withthe Prime Minister of Canada (a tiarapinned into an updo that straightened her curls and did not move, red lips, abillowing ivory dress, and elbow-length gloves).  

Andfinally, a brief telephone call with Frank–– the war hero introduced to her by Lamb and who she was to marry comeautumn.  Frank was “just fine,” he said and when they hung up there was no proclamationof “I miss you” or love.  “Just fine” was how she felt about thematch.

Scrubbingthe day from her skin in a too-hot shower, she was struck by the fact that shehad not made a single choice in the preceding forty-eight hours.  Save how she wanted her morning eggs, she hadlittle say in much of the last week.  Shehad not even applied the red lipstick smeared across her palm or mascararunning in black rivulets down her cheeks and over her neck.

Everythingin her day had been cursory. At the end of it all, she found herselfyearning for depth with an ache soacute it felt as though it would split her breastbone clean in two.  

Thoroughlyexhausted, but thrumming with need for a piece of herself, Claire finished her shower, toweled off, and took off downa back stairway that she had never before taken. Clad in black clothes fit fora caper in the night and with damp, unbrushed hair, she made her way to thestables.

Andthere, like a breath of fresh air, she stood –– her beautiful girl.  Long lines, sweet disposition, and aneagerness to please.  It gave Claire ajolt of emotion. Through absence, she felt that she had neglected the poorcreature.  However, Brimstone’s earsflattened as Claire smiled and clicked her tongue softly, leaning over thestall gate.  All was forgiven.

“Thereyou are, you good girl.”  She sighed asthe horse nudged her hand.  “I havemissed you, my beautiful love.”

Just asshe moved to pop a hip against the gate –– the only way to get the blastedthing to open without a screwdriver –– she had been interrupted.

“Can I help ye?” the voice called to her.

“Oh fuck off,” Claire muttered, browsfurrowing.  She had made it this far andto be taken from her plans by a groom.  Well, the thought was enough to make her seered.

Warm,broad hands took her by the upper arm and she turned, her face contorting.  He was a hulking thing of a man with broadshoulders. His collar unbuttoned and shirtsleeves rolled to the elbows, shecould tell that he had an immense amount of power hiding beneath the cleanlines of his work shirt.  He stooddumbfounded, staring at her for more than a few moments before releasing her.  He had fiery crop of hair.  It looked mussed by a hand, a tick used todistract a mind deep in thought.

For amoment, she bantered with him about her stables,her horses, her desire to take Brimstone out. She still hated having staff.  And then, her mind fuzzy from champagnecocktails and too little food, she had given in, said to call her “Claire,” andagreed he could follow her.  She mentallykicked herself.  Had she really told theman to call her by her given name? Had she really relented that easily?

With thematter of her taking the horse out settled, Colonel James Fraser set to ridebehind her at an appropriate distance, she climbed onto Brimstone, mutteringonly to herself, “You are losing it, Claire.”

Heproved himself an unobtrusive riding companion –– hanging back an intentionaldistance and allowing her to put some space between them.  Her initial disappointment of not being ableto take Brimstone out alone faded incrementally and she found her mind driftingto the past, a place she had found herself dwelling quite frequently of late.  

Years ofriding Brimstone.  

Lamb’sinsistence that he give her the horse outside of others’ presence, his coolfingers resting lightly over her eyes as he beseeched her to “keep them closed, just a bit more then,squirt.”  The feeling when she openedthem and saw the horse. Hers.

Thegilded horse-drawn carriage kept just kitty corner to where she had saddledBrimstone.  An ornate monstrosity ofriches that had carried her from the palace to Westminster Abbey for hercoronation, her heart aching with the loss of her uncle and her gut churning atthe thought of her new role.

The accidental queen, indeed.

Eventuallyshe as almost able to forget that Fraser was following her.  

Almost.

Theymade it a fair distance before she brought Brimstone back towards thestables.  Her hands carried her throughthe routine of readying Brimstone to be put back in her stall.

Fraserinterrupted her.  The damn bloody Scot.

“Shelikes ye.”  He was closer than she hadthought.  Lifting Brimstone’s saddle off,she sighed at the heft of it. The back of his hand brushed over her knuckleswhen he took it from her.  

Shestepped around to the front of her horse.

“Well, Iwould hope so.”  Claire’s eyes driftedshut for a moment as she reveled in the soft nudge of Brimstone’s nose againsther neck.  “I did all of the work withher.  Did you know that?”

“I didnaknow that, ma’am.”  

Fraserwas apparently wise enough to have not taken her earlier bait.  

Somethingin her, though, wanted him to say her name. Just to hear it. To lend even a moment’s more normalcyto the evening before she had to tromp back up the hill and into her gildedcage.

Theyworked in tandem to finish untacking and grooming Brimstone.  The silence was companionable and she smiledat him when he passed her a curry comb. The fact that he did not offer to just do the work himself struck her.  And she was deeply appreciative.

Brimstonewatered, cleaned, and tucked in for the night with a handful of apple slicesand a kiss to the nose, Claire turned to leave, wiping at the sheen of sweatthat had sprung up on the back of her neck.

“Yourmajesty?” Fraser called after her, his voice firm and somehow tentative all atonce.

Sheturned on her heel and continued to walk backwards.  “Yes, Colonel Fraser?”

“Ye’re afine rider.”

Sheoffered him a quick smile before turning and continuing back to thepalace.  Although she was returning toher gilded cage, it somehow felt as though she had opened a door.
