Game 253 - Wild Woods by Wild Woods
I picked up this game through the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality. I chose to donate 10 dollars, and I found about 153 games in the bundle that I was actually interested in. So, the consideration for this game will be if it was worth the 7 cents (rounded up) that I paid for it and the hours that I played it for. The bundle has since ended, but I still encourage you to make a donation to the organizations listed here.
What did I think it was at first? There are cute little forest animals! Maybe it's like a crafting game?
How was the character creator? There isn't really one - you can pick which skin you want your lil cat to use. They seem to all have the same powers and attacks.
You can upgrade your caravan with little buffs and stuff, so that's cool. I found myself wishing I could also upgrade my character so that they would be better at fighting or gathering.
How was the game? I was playing this and my spouse walked in and said "oh, you're playing a MOBA". I don't know what a MOBA is but I suppose this is one?
In Wild Woods, you're a caravan guard trying to get safely to your destination. Once you start the caravan DOES NOT STOP, so you have to do jobs - clear the way, collect wood and healing items, find gold, defend yourself against rabbits and badgers, and keep the fires going at night so you can see. The game felt hectic in a good way, and I imagine that when you're playing with buddies there's lots of good strategizing and delegation you can do.
The art is cute, and I didn't really notice the music too much. The game is a roguelike, so once you die you're done for good. I tried defeating the final boss twice and didn't have a lot of success, even though the rest of the game was doable on easy. I wonder if there's any scaling for larger groups?
What did I not love? The beginning tutorial was a little bit confusing - I like this trend for "games so simple you can understand them without text" but sometimes I need some explanation lol. Maybe we could bring back the instruction manual? Also the difficulty curve from the forest to the final boss meant I never beat the guy and felt frustrated.
At 30 minutes and 7 cents, was it really worth it? I really like this little guy! I think this is a really fun couch co-op game, which is a genre becoming more rare by the day. If I had a buddy to play with I imagine it would be pretty swell!

PAX East 2023: Wild Woods Wows With Well-Crafted Warmth
Not only did Wild Woods turn out to be a fun action game, but its challenge level felt perfect for younger gamers as well alongside its cozy, cartoonist style, as evidenced by the kids that were at the event playing the game as well. It seems like a clever gem that could be a rare roguelike for all ages, and we can’t wait to see more it when it comes out later this year.
